The Phillies have lost Rhys Hoskins for almost certainly the entire season. Philadelphia announced Thursday evening the veteran first baseman tore the ACL in his left knee. He’ll undergo surgery at an unspecified date. President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski will meet with the media to discuss the situation tomorrow morning.
Hoskins was injured during this morning’s Spring Training action against the Tigers. He retreated to field an Austin Meadows chopper that pushed him just into the outfield grass. After the ball kicked off his glove, Hoskins scrambled to retrieve it but immediately went down in pain (video provided on Twitter by Chris Brown of the Woodward Sports Network). The club had to call for a cart to take him off the field. While manager Rob Thomson later indicated that Hoskins was able to walk in the clubhouse, imaging revealed the devastating injury.
It’s a horrible development for team and player alike. Hoskins had been set to occupy his typical middle-of-the-order lineup spot for the defending National League champions. A paragon of offensive consistency, he’s hit between 27 and 34 home runs in all four of his full MLB seasons. Hoskins pairs that power with plus walk totals to more than compensate for slightly higher than average strikeout rates. Even after accounting for Philadelphia’s hitter-friendly home park, he’s been a well above-average offensive player throughout his career.
Hoskins is coming off his typical season. He connected on 30 homers with a .246/.332/.462 line while suiting up in 156 regular season games. While he only hit .159 with a .205 on-base percentage in the playoffs, he popped six homers in 73 postseason PA’s.
That kind of power production would have been of particular import for the Phils early in the 2023 campaign. Bryce Harper is recovering from Tommy John surgery and will open the year on the injured list. While Philadelphia doesn’t have any imminent plans to put the two-time MVP on the 60-day IL, the club has only specified they expect him back around the All-Star Break. They’ll now be down two of their best hitters early in the year and, in Hoskins’ case, likely for the entire season.
The Phils added another star position player this offseason, signing Trea Turner to a $300MM deal. The Phils have a pair of more traditional sluggers in last winter’s signees Kyle Schwarber and Nick Castellanos. Schwarber is coming off a 46-homer season in his first year with the club. Castellanos, on the other hand, struggled to a .263/.305/.389 line in the initial season of a five-year deal. With Hoskins out, there’s more pressure on Castellanos to return to peak form alongside Turner, Schwarber, J.T. Realmuto and eventually Harper in the lineup.
In the immediate future, the Phils will have to sort out how to divvy up first base playing time. The most straightforward decision would be to give the job to 27-year-old Darick Hall. A left-handed power bat, Hall got into his first 42 MLB games last season. He connected on nine longballs and slugged .522 in 142 plate appearances. That’s a promising start but a meager 3.5% walk rate and elevated 31% strikeout percentage contributed to a .282 OBP. Hall had hit .254/.330/.528 with 28 homers, a 9.5% walk percentage and a 22.6% strikeout rate in 101 games with Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Aside from Hall, the Phils could give occasional first base reps to either of Schwarber or Castellanos. Utility players like Josh Harrison or Kody Clemens could take some at-bats but aren’t likely to hit enough to play there regularly. The Phillies could also slide third baseman Alec Bohm across the diamond — particularly if they want the right-handed Bohm to take some reps from Hall against lefty pitching — while plugging Harrison or Edmundo Sosa at the hot corner for defensive purposes. Realmuto also seems likely to pick up a few starts on days when the Phils want to get him some time off from behind the dish.
If Philadelphia were to go outside the organization, Miguel Sanó stands as the top unsigned first baseman. Other players should come available as teams make roster cuts. The Brewers may wind up having to decide between minor league signee Luke Voit and the out-of-options Keston Hiura. The Marlins could soon have to decide whether to keep non-roster invitee Yuli Gurriel or allow him to retest the market. Phillies brass figures to provide insight into the plans over the coming days.
In addition to the difficulty of losing an entire season on a championship contender, it’s hard to draw up a worse time for an injury of this nature for Hoskins personally. The 30-year-old will be a free agent for the first time next offseason. One of the top bats in what looks to be a shallow free agent position player class, he looked like an obvious choice to reject a qualifying offer and sign a lucrative multi-year deal. Instead, he might have to take a pillow contract to reestablish himself before testing the market again over the 2024-25 offseason. Josh Bell and Trey Mancini, who can each opt out of the deals they signed this winter, now look like the top impending free agents at first base.
Did the clock strike midnight on Cinderella?
Maybe not the way he planned it, and under difficult circumstances, but Scott Kingery just made the team.
Not necessarily. Lot of trades happen last week of ST.
What the F is that supposed to mean
Really weak upstairs huh.
Most asinine comment I’ve read in a while. Bravo.
SON OF A $&@#+
At least he didn’t play in the WBC!
At least it happened in the line of duty, unlike the WBC.
@Ignorant
Because players ‘hate’ playing for their countries over their clubs.
Spring Training-exactly what it says it is, “training”/ exhibition.
WBC-the chance to play for your country and represent your people, a serious baseball tournament. One can ask the likes of Salvador Perez, Mike Trout, Shohei Ohtani, what it means to them, then you might grasp what it means. They will not support your comment one iota.
Patently some people just do not understand or comprehend the difference, nor do they understand what it means to MOST players. Some baseball followers appear to understand, some fans from one specific country do not understand, in fact, some of them are overjoyed when ‘knees are taken’ or their flag is burned.
That was a prototypical play. It shows injuries happen everywhere.
Yawn
Welp, that’s a bummer. Carnage in the NL East
Bad timing for his free agent year
Or great timing for a team like the Giants who always get the bargain player on a short term deal
He’s from the Sac area, something Zaidi and co place a big emphasis on. Guys from northern Cali. Can def see them targeting Hoskins next year.
So is Judge?
Ya but have you seen Linden ?
Don’t blink or you miss it.
Arson judge lol
Time table: 2024.
OUCH!!!
Luke Voit? Trying to think of other guys who may be available not coming up with much that would replicate Hoskins production
Darick Hall should get a opportunity. Dude can thump it a bt
Thank you. He probably should get the first crack. I totally brain-farted on him. Still would probably look at a cheap, 1-year filler. Terrible for Hoskins, though. I know he’s a frequent Phillie fan target, and I admit I don’t see a lot of Philly games, but his stats show me that he’s pretty consistent at the plate, hard to replicate.
He can also strike out a bit too
I hate this for Rhys, but I want the Phils to stay in-house for now when it comes to replacing him. I don’t have huge faith in Hall as anything but a platoon DH, but they they should stay flexible with the players that have already been playing well in order to lock down one of the final bench spots.
Kingery / Hall / Sosa / Guthrie / Clemens. Forget the outside replacement until the deadline, as they are probably better off with what is here already. Some faith in their Day Care group paid off last year…stick with that approach.
No reason not to sign Voit if he doesn’t make MIL’s roster.
Hall can’t hit LHP even a little bit.
Voit is more of a DH these days. He never had much Range at 1B.
Negative….Voit was an average 1st baseman….not terrible but not elite or great…..the primary job at first is catching the baseball not necessary displaying great range.
I’m bummed but Hoskins as a defensive 1st baseman is mediocre at best.
Hoskins is awful defensively. Guy really never had a true position.
Schwarber and Castellalos are any better? New movie on Netflix: Realmuto and the 8 DHs.
Not really. It should be harpers position when hes ready to take the field. His arm strength will never be what it once was.
I agree. He reminds me of a player from the 60’s named Dick Stuart. Was nicknamed “Dr. StrangeGlove”. I can’t imagine he was much worse than Hoskins at 1b.
Ohtani literally had the surgery Harper had. Lol. Harper will be fine.
@Von
Like Ohtani, Harper might be improved. Maybe a two-way player!
I think Milwaukee keeps him and dumps Hiura.
Who would be available if you want a guy that will hit about 20 homers but strike out 200 plus times…..that’s close to RH production?
Yeah. Now that they’re not playing the Pirates as much, he will be missing 90% of his home runs
Somehow the Pirates will manage to fill the HR void that the Phillies left behind.
Mike Ford to the rescue!
Replace him in the ‘aggregate.’ Three guys who can whiff 66 times each.
(B. Beane)
That sucks.
Quite possibly the last time we’ll ever see him in a Phillies uniform. Tragic. Feel for the guy.
Not 100% sure about that now. Maybe he will have to take a 1yr prove it (again) deal. He was going to get a $20mil+ per yr contract this upcoming off-season most likely now teams aren’t going to want to give that type of deal coming off of surgery of that nature.
If he has to “settle” for a 1-yr re-prove it deal, there isn’t a better lineup to put of serious numbers like in the Phillies lineup
Unless Hall has a dominant season, I think the QO might be an idea.
Doubt the Phillies offer him that sort of money coming off an injury like that.
This feels like Boras getting together with the Giants for 2 years with an opt-out.
I think they would. They Phil’s don’t mind spending lots of money, PLUS he would make 18mil QO. If he turned it down, the Phils would at least get a draft pick for him.
The Q.O. offer was $19.65M this offseason. It will go up again next.
The ironic thing about this is he got hurt as a by product of his lousy fielding.i.g. fieldable ball that kicks off his glove…then gets hurt running after it. Probably woulda gotten booed in Philly for the boot, then cheered as they carted him off.
100% would have gotten a few…”what the **** is he doing!?!?!?” from the crowd.
Billy Beane: You don’t know how to play 1st base. Scott…
Scott Hatteberg: That’s right.
Billy Beane: It’s not that hard, Scott. Tell him Wash.
Ron Washington: It’s incredibly hard.
Phillies playoff legend. I can see him coming back on a one year prove it type deal.
I think the Braves just clinched the division.
If you’re a Braves fan you just jinxed their health. Beware.
Actually I’m a realistic Mets fan.
Cohen may actually go to a $450M payroll at the trade deadline. That’s also realistic?
It is for him.
Beyond the next threshold?
@meckert
So you’re a realistic Mets fan… who just jinxed the BRAVES!
By God, that’s BRILLIANT!
Hush dude
Wait until Camden tells you what he learned from playing his video game. They could have lost Turner and it wouldn’t matter. Losing Hoskins is completely irrelevant.
As a Braves fan, I hate to see this kind of thing happen to one of the primary competitors. Hell, to anyone for that matter, no matter what team they’re on.
The Braves have injury problems too.
Karma for Phillies trying to win through free agency like the Mets and Padres
Karma would be punishing someone for doing something bad. I don’t think this qualifies.
It’s the baseball GODS saying that you can’t buy a World Series with Harper, Schwarber, Castellanos, Wheeler, Turner…
Dumb comment. Houston won the WS last year with a top 10 payroll. In fact the entire NL playoff field were the top 7 payrolls in the NL. This idea that cheap billionaires not spending is somehow a good thing baffles me. All good teams spend money. Yes. The Phillies spend more than most, but they’re a top market with an awful farm. Should we have applauded the rebuilding years when they didn’t spend and completely stunk and developed very little talent?
You can’t buy a world series because a 3 5 7 game series has too many variables. You can buy a playoff spot and once you are in the tournament you have a chance.
Houston is proof there isn’t Karma in baseball.
Given your reasoning, the “baseball gods” would have our Pirates vying for a championship every year
Santana McCutchen Hill Velasquez Garcia Hedges. Talking about a team trying to buy a championship. 3 starting bats and 2 starting pitchers. Gods aren’t going to like that. I will guarantee you the pirates won’t win a championship this year.
Haha. Great post.
Cleveland, Tampa bay, Baltimore, and Seattle all disagree with you
Yeah, Kewldood69 is getting plenty of run with his “baseball gods” schtick.
Depends, Bhambrave: the most aggregious users of the cheating system are playing else where with no second or clean championship. Altuve became the most hated player in baseball due to buzzer lies. They lost to the Nationals (with a stacked team) and Braves. Sounds like Karma to me.
Such a reasonable and measured take.
Send some of that bad karma (3 pennants, 2 WS Wins, perennial div champs) the Yankees’ way. Please.
They bought an NL pennant with those guys. Without Turner.
I’ll take that all day.
Tell Cleveland, Tampa Bay, Baltimore and Seattle…. to support their teams better.
@Kewl….
You’re getting slapped around with that baseball gods crap, eh? Like that guy in Tombstone that Wyatt slaps around. You gonna do something? Or stand there and bleed.
@BronxMac….
Baseball is building a strong core out of young guys and supplementing them with free agents. If you have a good enough core, you don’t need free agents. What baseball isn’t is having a team that is 80% free agents, like the Mets and the Phillies. The Guardians are a perfect example of this as the have established a core of J-ram, Gimenez, and Kwan this past season, and have supplemented that core with Josh Bell and Mike Zunino.
Also to further prove the point, 5 years down the road, when those guys start getting old and start slowing down, the Phillies, Mets, and probably the padres, with all of their players on 10 year mega deals will be absolutely awful. Look at the end of the Pujols and Miguel Cabrera contracts. They’re absolutely terrible and are being paid 30 million dollars to do it. Right now those teams will do great, don’t get me wrong, but wait a few years and see how wrong those signings were,
I think it’s funny when people say “Baseball is” and “Baseball isn’t”. It’s like the “unwritten rule” philosophy, Baseball is a lot of things, There’s no right way or wrong way to build a team. There’s only success and failure.
And I will agree with you there, the problem is these decisions that they make will create really expensive problems that will cause them to fail in 5 years. Of course, there will be some whose contracts are actually worth it, but you don’t know who will be worth the contract, and who will be worth nothing. That’s what hurts baseball, guys who become worthless, and sit there just eating their contracts, when the club could give the roster spot to a young guy, or use the money on a better free agent.
That’s an equalizer. The rich teams might waste money and roster spots on over-aged players in the late years of those bloated contracts, The less rich teams avoid those deals and have less dead money.
Alright, I digress. You have a good point, you win.
ThatOneCubFan
Good points all. I’m not buying the good/bad karma nonsense though. The lengthy deals could prove dubious. I’m not against clubs spending for FA (or extending their own players with big deals). The problem I have is making out lineups based on salary instead of performance on the field – and the resulting waste of young, athletic talent. Example, if the Yanks (my team) spent $275 mil per year, and 60-75% is bottled up on three to five guys, sooner or later, the progression of young athletic talent grinds to a halt. That gets frustrating, and boring to watch. I’d prefer the Yanks, or other teams, spread that money out a little more amongst younger players. The challenge there, of course is WHICH players.
I agree. And as a baseball fan, I’m more annoyed at billionaire owners who pocket revenue rather than plow it back into the teams. Isn’t it funny how teams tank, but their ticket prices don’t.?
Baseball is a combination of many things. Having homegrown talent is great, but you can’t just rub a magic lamp and get homegrown stars. How many rings have we seen from Cleveland, Tampa Bay, Baltimore and Seattle…etc? I’m not saying they’re doing it the wrong way. Different markets have to operate under different financial guidelines…etc. In my mind the best teams are always a combination of smart FA signings and homegrown depth. But if you can’t develop that talent in-house, you absolutely have to supplement it with FA talent.
I’m not a Mets fan, and they’re spending like maniacs, but they’re also playing it smart with their young, homegrown guys. They have minor league depth. All those things you’re complimenting the Rays and Seattle for? The Mets are doing it too. They’re also spending a ton on FAs. These things don’t have to be mutually exclusive.
Ughhh hate this for that guy. Sorry Philly fans.
lol
What a bad break for Hoskins. He has his flaws but he is a stand up guy. Huge opportunity to Hall.
lol
The injury would have at least been somewhat more acceptable if America had just won the WBC, but Trout choked in the worst possible way and had no chance against the multiple Ohtani fastballs right down the middle of the plate and Ohtani and Japan won. *No chance* Trout doesn’t hold at least some bitterness against Ohtani during this season because of that hahaha.
In other words, Rhys’ injury is for nothing because America didn’t even win the WBC.
Rhys wasn’t even an option for team USA.
Von;
I have no idea what this kid is ingesting.
What does a WBC game have to do with Rhys Hoskins being inured in a ST game?
The point stands.
Where is the point standing? Mars?
The point that stands is on his head.
Please stand in front of a bus.
You seem to know as much about homosexuality as baseball.
Signed,
John Kruk
Did you know they have a Mute button here? It’s for posters like you.
Yeah. The point. If you wear a hat, no one will see it
Your comment is so all-over-the-road that I have to wonder if you stopped in at happy hour before writing it
No idea what the WBC has to do with this injury or how Trout striking out somehow made Hoskins’ injury even less palatable but I do know firsthand that tearing an ACL is much easier than one would think
Writing moronic screeds isn’t going to change that
That’s not a homosexual name there, Marlin. Flaming or otherwise.
Neither is Dick Pole.
I think you’re just steamed because you got rolled on your pointless WBC rant. Or being a Marlin’s Fan.
At least he got actual medical attention and carted off. WBC they force you to walk off until they can get you into a 1978 wheel chair and roll you down a tunnel where a teammate all the sudden lets go of your propped up leg without any warning.
WBC? WTF?
Say hello to the Darick Hall era. The guy can take!
CTbronx7: Darick Hall might be able to “TAKE” but the bigger question is can he RAKE? Sorry, sometimes I just can’t resist being a smart@$$.
And in the end, the hits you rake, are equal to the hits you take.
Sometimes I can’t resist either.
Feel bad for this guy and Phils fans. Time for Hall to rake!
Call the orioles. They’ve got a few first basement crushing it in spring
Chris Davis retired.
but if the o’s trade off there basement the rest of the team would collapse
I really liked Diaz. Every team must of had a fantastic 40 man not to keep him or at least be like PIT ATL BAL and try to get him to the minors.
Phillies are down to only 3 Designated Hitters. 🙂
Chris Carter has still been mashing away down in Mexico
Give him a call on the telephone!
“Is that you, Tolbert? I’m hung over, my knees are killin’ me and if you’re going to pull this [stuff] at least you could’ve said you were from the Yankees.”
All he does is catch touch downs.
Nice!
Luke Voit coming soon?
Other posters have said it, but my gut says the Brew Crew jettisons Hiura first.
Does Voit have the capability to opt out on his own? He may prefer the Phils if he thinks he’ll have more playing time.
Voit has an opt-out if he’s not added to the 40-man tonight.
I think Voit still has another 24 hours or so to trigger the opt-out, but YBC is right.
@gwynning and ybc
i believe i read that mil has to add him by fri afternoon or he can walk
@bb It is Friday. My bad.
I watched the replay 5 times, and saw the same thing 5 times that I saw with him when they put him in the OF and then back to 1B…..
He may well be the most uncoordinated position player in MLB.
He starts running and it’s as if parts of his body are simply not moving in unison. He mishandles ground balls because parts of his body are set, but other parts aren’t – he’s off-balance and it throws his hands off that are attempting to catch the ball.
He seems to be a wonderful person and teammate. But when he gets back – hopefully next year – the team that signs him needs to employ him as a full-time DH, and drill it into his head that he doesn’t need to try to speed around the bases when running….just work on staying upright.
Sorry to hear about this…..good guy to have in the lineup day after day.
How about Bobby Dalbec?
How about they move Alec Bohm to 1B and use a combination of Sosa, Harrison, and Kingery at 3B? If that doesn’t work out they can try to trade for another 3B; or trade for a 2B and move Stott to 3B.
Sorry to be obvious.
P.S. The improved D may well offset the missed O.
Bohm is a bad idea for first, as the bat is not likely to carry well there as a permanent solution. He needs to focus on 3B and upgrading his hitting in an important season for him.
Using Bohm as a platoon option for lefties at first might work for now, but I just don’t see the dominant bat that is required to be an impact player at first.
CarverAndrews;
Why do they need to get power from a 1B? Is that written somewhere?
At best Bohm is a decent MLB 3B defensively. He is a much better 1B. The 3 players I mentioned will all pay 3B better than he does. As the Rays GM said recently – he doesn’t care if he get production from O or D – just that he gets production.
If the Phillies will go with questionable D at 1B then Hall can play there in a platoon with someone (and no, I don’t see them moving Bohm back and froth between 3B and 1B…..he’s challenged enough defensively to be shuffled around…his hitting will suffer). At this point in the season no one is trading the Phillies a run-producing 1B unless the Phillies pony up some of their prime prospects.
They’ll fill the void from within and see how it goes for 6-8 weeks. DD wants the team peaking in Aug-Sept-Oct. All they need to do till mid-season is stay with the pack and make the players they have under contract better….like they did last year.
Not written in stone at all, but one wants to extract the most value possible out of every position on the field. Give me an awesome fielding 1B with an average plus bat and I am OK with that.
Give me a plus plus bat with an average glove and that is also OK at first…a position where you tend to stick the bats and coach up the gloves more often than not.
Bohm would probably peak as an average glove with an average bat over there, which is hardly ideal when he might be an average glove with a plus bat at third.
CarverAndrews;
I understand.
But the Phillies have power bats with Harper, Castellanos, and Schwarber in the OF and at DH, while JT and Bohm hit well and with some power. That’s far more than most teams.
Would you feel more comfortable if they move Castellanos or Schwarber to 1B and they boot more balls than Rhys did?
I’m a Branch Rickey disciple. He knew the value of a quality defensive 1B and almost always had one. The Phillies don’t have anyone on their roster like like that. Bohm is better at 1B than 3B, and more comfortable playing there as well. That might settle Bohm and help his concentration when hitting. For sure no matter who they put at 3B instead of him will improve the team defense.
I think that we will see Bohm over there vs. lefties more often than not, as they get Sosa into the lineup. That being said, it still is not ideal.
First, Bohm is not that great as a defensive 1B either, although he would adapt over time. But it is hard to forecast him being a slick fielder at first either. I have watched him over there.
Second – he has adapted to 3B far better than anyone thought, and is now comfortable over there and still making strides. They just might have their 3B for the future if he continues to improve, and his bat make him a top ten or better option at third. So why interrupt that progress to make him adjust yet again, when it is truly a stretch to see him developing into a top flight 1B?
I agree that defense is a bigger priority for me than for most of the fantasy-minded fan base that spend their time poring over the metrics, and is a crucial part of a good team. I just think that you are assuming that Bohm is a naturally good fielder at first, and that is not the case as of now. Learning first is not as easy as folks think. I would prefer to see him at third until he proves otherwise. He already surprised all of us last year with his growth over there…keep him comfortable.
Can you name me 8 starting 1st basemen that even qualify for what you’re asking for? Def+average plus bat.
How many 1st basemen do you see as being plus-plus with the bat? Like who’s the last player you’d call plus-plus with the bat? I’m curious where you draw the line and how many players can meet it.
Uh Freddie Freeman?
That’s 1 player. Or is Freeman where you draw the line? How many above him?
Improved D with Bohm at first?? He’s worse defensively than Hoskins at first, lol
I agree. Bohm has been horrific at first in limited appearances. He’s made strides at 3rd. I think it’s best not to move him around much. I understand 1B is easier thab 3B, but I wouldn’t mess with Bohm too much right now.
Wow just wow
Okay being serious now
I am sorry this happened
Maybe the Orioles have someone who could help
If the Phillies management and Boras was working on an extention for the Big Hosk they can place that file back in the drawer. This will create an opportunity for someone. Next Phillie up.
Horrible news and wishing the gentleman a speedy and full recovery. Welp – PHI, ATL, NYM depth all being called on before season begins. These things often even out. Next man up…
LOLPHILlIES
Dbag2323
Oh man, awful news. I was looking forward to seeing how good the Phils could be without Harper.
For a non contact sport, the number of serious injuries in baseball is something else.
There are so many players and the season is so long. Bound to happen.
That’s a blow to this team. I don’t want to be that guy, especially just as he is barely getting a diagnosis, but he’s going to have to sign a 1 year prove it deal after having to miss the entire 2023 season. Hopefully the Phillies give him another shot, dude can bang.
@acoss
You ain’t that guy. The article says exactly that… pillow contract.
His spring numbers were amazing. So sad
Terrible break for Philly but they still have enough firepower to give the Mets a run for their money.
Well, the Mets lost a guy to a knee-snap as well.. Their closer. So there’s that.
I don’t post much on here, but anyone that responds to an injury with a LOL is not a real baseball fan. If someone hurts themselves doing something stupid like hurting their pitching hand punching their spouse then the deserve it and bring it on. But an injury doing their job, just lay off. Have some actual humane feelings for people.
Settle it on the field with the best vs your best not hope to face a depleted team.
LOL
It must be tough being such a POS, but you get it done!
Your name says it all…..Dumb and Stooge
You lol a lot for no apparent reason. Do you rock back and forth when you do that?
@The Quad: I’m guessing they were bottle-fed.
The new rule changes should have included no injuries.
I thought they would trade Hoskins during the offseason and move Bohm over to 1st. No one could’ve predicted this but in hindsight I bet they wish they moved him out. There was no reason to keep him and take this risk with so many 1B/DH types on the team.
Phillies have options.
1. U can give Hall His shot @ 1st Base especially vs Right handed Pitching
2. U can Move Bohm to play 1st at times giving Sosa, Harrison & Kingery a chance to play 3 Base
3. U can use J.T at 1st @ times giving him a break behind plate and giving Stubbs a little bit more work.
4. There’s always trade or guys that r gonna be released. I seen the Marlins last week made Garrett Cooper available for trade not sure how much that would cost.
They’re going to do 1-3
LOL
It’s a bummer. He was lining up to earn a 4 year/$80M to 5 years/$100M FA deal or better.
Given his pre injury free agent market, I still foresee someone giving him 2 years/$30M guaranteed w/ a $10M buy out on a $30M club option and an opt out after the first year to re-enter the market if he bounces back healthy.
He’ll be fine.
Read the room a little, will ya?
?? I’m saying it’s unfortunate but I think his career will be fine…. Compared to a bunch of other comments that are writing him off or saying the Phillies should’ve had a contingency plan etc I’m being downright optimistic and supportive of him…
Me thinks you just don’t like me and any comment I made would’ve raised your ire.
Ok, good. I couldn’t tell. I actually do like this comment. No sarcasm. My mute list is extensive reserved for trolls so I don’t see those comments. We good.
The Marlins can trade Garrett Cooper to the Phillies. That will cover them at 1B for 70 games. Then they can find other ways to fill in the other 90 games that Cooper doesn’t play in.
LOL
If this is what allows Kingery to make the team, it could be almost poetic. Hoskins and him came up together and became two of the main faces of their rebuild. Obviously Hoskins panned out, while Kingery didn’t. It’d be pretty crazy if Hoskins injury is what got Kingery one final chance in Philly and he had his very long awaited breakout season, making Rhys proud and allowing some good to come out of this very unfortunate injury.
In all seriousness, I feel bad for Hoskins. He was in a contract year, and by all accounts seems to be a pretty likable guy. Have always thought he was slightly underrated, if anything.
Losing Harper, Hoskins, Suarez, and Painter before the season even starts…. OUCH! Knowing Dombrowski, he will trade all their minor league talent for veteran players immediately.
Abel, Bergolla, Lee, McGarry, and Crawford for Bryan Reynolds, Jo Man Choi, and David Bednar. Dumbrowski gets a viable OF to replace Harper, a viable 1B to replace Hoskins, and a closer. Make it happen Dave.
“Knowing Dombrowski, he will trade all their minor league talent for veteran players immediately.”
Saratoga Sexy;
That’s not what he’s done with the Phillies in his 2 years.
lol
There is no crying in baseball Red Sox Fans.
Take it up with Red Sox Ownership who made the wrong move
by choosing Chaim Bloom over Dombrowski.
Then, they tried to “scapegoat Dombrowski” for their bad
business and baseball decision.
@Saratoga
You giggle inanely/insanely at unfunny things. Do you need to up your meds?
We care.
LOL
You, obviously, don’t know Dombrowski.
Dombrowski has built some depth for the Phillies.
SS Trey Turner was already picking up the slack for Bryce Harper out for 1/2 season.
Darick Hall is ready to step up and play 1B and hit with power.
Castellanos had a “down year” in ’22.
If he even has an above average year in ’23, then the Phillies won’t miss a beat
even with Harper out until the All Star break.
The Phillies have no need to make any major deals.
Dombrowski is wisely building the Phillies major league roster depth and the minor league system for long term contention,
Sad to see this update. I

Torn acl on a contract year man that’s tough
Orioles have extra 1B also. They have so many players to trade away it is silly.
Gavin Sheets from the White Sox? No one is gonna replace Harper or Hoskins production, but Sheets swings a big bat, doesn’t have a clear path to playing time in Chicago and probably won’t cost too much (and is under team control for a long while).
Terrible route to the ball. Could have 100% been avoided if he was better fundamentally.
Well it could have been worse, he’s not extended yet, so that’s a good thing. Find someone to play first, and make the big play for Ohtani. D.D got a break, and he can better see Hoskins worth as well. Nick C is the big key this year though, if he can’t regain his eye, that contract will hurt.
There will be many 1B option the next two weeks with players being DFA from Spring.
Get well soon Rhyse. This Astros fan would love to see you compete again this year!
*Rhys
Dude should change it to ‘Reese’ and quit the nonsense.
Injury article comment sections are why I <3 Mute button.
@wcattb
not me! I push the ‘louder’ button!
I like all the caterwauling cacophony!
Season ending injuries always bring out the best of the MLBTR comment section. Wishing Rhys a quick recovery, the “team full of DHs” experiment must go on so go out there and get Sanó just for laughs.
Perfect opportunity to for the Red Sox to trade Bobby Dalbec to the Phillies for some pitching Depth. Right hand hitter with Power and lots of swing and miss…. similar player to Hoskins.
Everybody’s got an extra 1B capable dude the Phillies could trade for. They’re a dime a dozen. Literally name a team.
Man, I definitely feel bad for him & the Phillies fans. He’s a really good player & it always sucks when someone is out for the season right as the season is about to begin.
Feel bad for Hoskins. Good guy. Wasn’t ever gonna remind anyone of Freeman or Goldschmidt, but a solid contributor. Gonna be tough sledding for the Phillies in the early going playing without Harper and Hoskins. Supposedly, if Hoskins plays this year, at best it might not be until September. But even that is not very likely.
JMHO, but if I were Dombro I’d make a trade for Hosmer. Big drop off in pop, but Hosmer is good at making contact, taking walks, not striking out a lot and putting up a decent OBP. Fan Graphics rates him as above average defensively. Plus, it won’t take much to acquire him. He’s just keeping 1B warm until Matt Mervis is ready.
Between injuries and defections, the NL East is gonna be a tough row to hoe for the Mets, Braves and Phillies. All three have issues.
Although I’m a Nats fan with zero love for the Phillies, hate to see this. It’s unfortunate when any team loses a good player for so long, a loss to baseball in general.
As a Dodgers fan It’s comical hearing Phillies fans scrambling to figure out who can be signed or traded for to somehow replace Hoskins. I’ve become accustomed to seeing the next man up emerging from the Dodgers bench or farm to seamlessly do it.
@leftcoaster I just scrolled up to confirm; Literally every Phillies fan is talking about Hall. It’s the non-Phillies fans talking about trades, likely because they don’t have as much Phillies-specific knowledge. People find trades more exciting so they get thrown around a lot in the comments, but Phils fans know it’s time for Hall, Sosa, Harrison…etc to step up.
Fair enough.
Got the oppo problem in the Bronx. Fans want to see the up and coming talent.. Management only wants to play guys over 30. Our good young talent gets swapped for older, injured has beens, Still and all, I wouldn’t mind seeing Voit in Philly, just to see how he’d rake in that park.
bronxmac, Philly is often incorrectly labeled as a hitter’s park. Sure, the homers fly out in Philly. So if you’re a power guy, you’ll get a bit of a boost. But if you’re a doubles guy? Good luck. Extra base hits are tough in that small outfield.
Not only are you crass and clueless… you’re dead wrong about New York City native Jerome ‘Curly” Howard.
My prediction is they swing a deal with the Nats for Joey Meneses.
Phillthy Fans are gross
Yes. As opposed to your comments, cheering an injury and rooting for more. Pure class, no matter what username you’re using this week.
Stooge guy (and more than a few others on here) reminds me of a few of the inconceivably idiotic posters from the old philly.com site, and were the reason that we left to open our own Phillies forum oh so long ago.
There is a really good group of members that post in the comments section here, and mlbtr is awesome and really try to take the high road, but there is little that they can do to alleviate the idiocy that still seems to dominate for long stretches of time.with the pond scum types.
For the most part, I am back to simply reading the site, and ignoring the comment section as it is not worth the time. The only comments that I open up now are Phillies related, and even there the interest is waning.
Stooge guy is a troll.
It was painful to just watch Rhys get hurt..This team will miss all that he means to the clubhouse..how do I know that? From everything his teammates say about him.
I saw earlier someone posted about Hall platooning with J. T….I think that is a very workable solution..gets JT needed rest and helps keeps Stubbs ready each day..
Also, thru the years I’ve been posting on these threads, it never ceases to amaze me the low mentality some have for the misfortunes of other teams players..why on earth would anyone cheer a players misfortune? How sad a life they must live…
How about he plays better defense and this doesn’t happen?
“Tell them how easy it is, Wash.”
“It’s incredibly hard…”
A real shame for that to happen to a good, solid, ball player and great person as well. I’m a Mets fan and dislike seeing this happen.
