5:20 pm: Turner’s wife Kourtney took to Twitter to thank people for all the kinds words that were shared today. In the message, she relays that Turner had 16 stitches and a lot of swelling, but no fractures and clear scans.
2:10 pm: The Sox provided reporters an update on Turner, with Abraham among those to relay it (Twitter links). Turner is receiving treatment for soft tissue injuries and is being monitored for a concussion. The club also says he is stable, alert and in good spirits given the circumstances. More updates will follow after further testing.
1:50 pm: Red Sox infielder Justin Turner was removed from today’s spring game after being hit in the face with a pitch, per multiple reports. Turner was able to walk off the field but appeared to be bleeding quite a bit, with a trainer holding a towel to hiss face. Tom Caron of NESN was among those who shared video of the incident on Twitter, for those who aren’t squeamish and want to view the plate appearance in question. The severity of Turner’s injury isn’t known at this time but Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports that Turner was taken to hospital in an ambulance.
With so little info about the extent of Turner’s injuries, we can’t know what to expect in the near future in terms of an absence. It’s possible that there will be on-field implications for the club at some point, but for now, the primary concern will be his health. Turner has been in the majors for over a decade, is now in his fifth different organization and seems to be generally respected and beloved throughout the league. There will surely be dozens of people throughout the game holding their breath until more information is forthcoming.
Turner, 38, had been a mainstay of the Dodgers for many years. He broke out with that club in 2014 and was with them through last year. They could have retained him for 2023 via a $16MM club option but they went for the $2MM buyout instead. Turner became a free agent and garnered interest from the Marlins, Diamondbacks and Twins before signing with the Red Sox. The deal is officially for two years and $21.7MM, though with a complicated structure. He will make $8.3MM this season before deciding between a $13.4MM player option for 2024 and a $6.7MM buyout. There’s also $1MM in potential incentives available to him based on plate appearances, getting $200K for 480, 500, 520, 540 and 560.
Turner has primarily been a third baseman in his career but spent about half his time as the designated hitter for the Dodgers last year. The Red Sox have Rafael Devers at the hot corner and seemed likely to deploy Turner as a DH or perhaps spelling rookie Triston Casas at first base on occasion. Those plans may have to change if Turner is significantly hurt, though the Red Sox and Turner’s many friends throughout the game will be hoping that’s not the case.

Before my time, but the worst was the beaning of Cleveland’s shortstop Ray Chapman, who was killed by a fastball thrown from Yankee pitcher Carl Mays who, it was said, was mad about Chapman crowding the plate. Mays swore it was unintentional, but a lot of players, including Chapman’s teammate Ty Cobb, didn’t buy it.
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
I saw the Tony C reruns (bad enough) but Pillar was spewing blood like he’d been shot in the head. Awful. I was surprised to see him come back from that, a courageous fellow.

I suspect you’re thinking of Tris Speaker. Cobb was a Detroit Tiger in 1920.
Poster formerly known as . . .
I got the player right, but the team wrong:
‘Ty Cobb, not the most well liked person, was one of the most vocal opponents of Mays. “That Mays has been pitching like that since he came into the league…..something has to be done now…..he killed a great little guy and a wonderful ballplayer….give the man a taste of his own medicine I say.” It should be noted again that the “Peach” was very friendly with “Chappie,” genuinely liking and respecting the scrappy little ballplayer for his integrity and good nature as well as the way he played the game. It probably helped that Chapman was a fellow Southerner too.’

Thanks for the correction, Stat_head. Appreciated.
You were right about Tris Speaker, too. He was in the on-deck circle and ran over to check on Chapman.

Turner was kind of a bonus spare part for this team.
He wasn’t needed to man the hot corner, and, it was signing a DH for the sake of signing a DH instead of sticking, say, dalbec in the hole, or, giving some farm kids experience at mlb pitching while also using the spot to rest mlb regulars.
He was just supposed to replace the idea of jd martinez leaving.
Even if he is out a long time, which we should hope he isn’t, there’s no need to get anyone to replace him.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
I completely agree with GA on this one
Claydagoat
Yep, Dalbec and alfaro splitting DH time would be fine for the short term.
Fever Pitch Guy
GASox – Agreed! Despite the enormous contract Bloom gave Turner, nobody was expecting much from a guy whose numbers have declined for 5 consecutive years.
I’ve said this before: If Bloom bought stocks like he buys players, he’d have been bankrupt long ago.
GASoxFan
Fever – some people expected him to increase his HR and 2B output… then again, you hear that anytime anyone with any power signs in boston and often it doesn’t result in any big jump.
That said, he was always a bit of a luxury purchase for this squad, sort of like ordering heated seats for your new Kia and trying to show off to Benz and Beamer owners.
Good news for him on clean scans so far and only needing stitches. Hopefully the only scars will be the physical type.

===========================
Then why do these players even get signed? Why did the LAD, trying to stay under budget, sign JD when all they had to do was promote some kid? At a level of 500 Ps, Turner was #47 in wRC+. That is serious hitting.
No one has spare kids in the minors that can hit like that.
GASoxFan
Joe – A contending team (which 2023 red sox ARE NOT) could use such a player.
In boston’s case, bloom was doing damage control for blundering through everything to that point in the offseason and trying to shift the narrative on the moves he did, and more importantly, DIDN’T, make.
You left out of your quote where I said “for this team”
It wasn’t commentary on MLB as a whole

Gasbag– You deserve the Sox and especially Bloom. Justin Turner you do not deserve.
Rsox
During the offseason the only other teams we heard that were linked to Turner were the Marlins and the Diamondbacks, neither are necessarily contending teams any more than the Red Sox. Its not like he turned down staying with the Dodgers or signing with the Astros to sign with the Red Sox
RSmith
“Its not like he turned down staying with the Dodgers or signing with the Astros to sign with the Red Sox”

You are not making sense. You have been unhappy that the Red Sox have not contended and now you are unhappy that they signed a player that a contender would. You are just bashing no matter what.
GASoxFan
Pwndroia – and, I’d happily take it too. Everyone likes competitive baseball in October. I hate the front office, I love the team, and it pains me to see them having ignored the contention window that was wide open with a young core that they gave up on after 2019. I just don’t see the pathway being there in ’23, ‘balanced schedule’ or not.
To me, a contender makes the postseason, at least has the chance to try playing sudden death series towards a ring in October. So when I say they won’t contend, it means they won’t have that shot and their year ends in the regular season.
Then whether they contend (and you can, briefly, gloat before we turn the page) or they don’t (and we can all hope bloom gets canned) it’ll be time for another offseason where we hope a much better cast of characters than we’ve currently got gets put together.
RSmith
Which group would you want your team to be associated with?
Royals, Dodgers, Blue Jays, Cardinals, Cubs, Astros
or
Marlins, Athletics, Giants, Pirates, Diamondbacks, Nationals
-The first set have the best records in Spring Training, along w/ Red Sox.
-The second set have the worst records in Spring Training.
Big difference in talent right there, showing ST games are meaningless in the standings, but still relevant. And the Red Sox are hanging in the right neighborhood.
GASoxFan
Suit – my issue is with allocation of resources. My response to you below that I wrote before you posted about being unhappy with a player a contender might sign explains it best, but, let me ask here:
why would you buy new floor mats and radio unit for a car with a knocking engine and blown transmission sitting on bald tires? That’s foolish spending right? Bigger needs exist?
This is a 38/39 year old player, who, if he contributes much it will almost all come from the dh spot. It’s a polishing move you make when you’ve got extra salary to spend, and, your larger needs are already in working order.
The team is chock full of more pressing needs the payroll could’ve been spent on that would make a bigger difference.
GASoxFan
Rsmith:
That’s among the most absurd correlation comments I’ve seen.
So, by your reasoning, the Royals at 10-2 (best among AZ teams or the Cubs at 7-4 (second most wins among AZ teams) are by all indications among the best teams in MLB?
ST records recieve a HUGE impact from which players get work, how many innings they stay in for, who the opposing team is putting in its lineup, whether it’s early spring when it’s wide-open and more milb/st-invite players or late spring where it’s your projected starters getting work, what each team is trying to work on. And so, so, many other things.
For that matter, the NYM, PHI, and ATL are all .500, and not in your list. They must be poor company for the teams hovering near .500 right?
The rays are 4-5; SD is 6-5… are they expected to stink because they’re not up top?
Included in the 7 wins the red sox have so far were 2 over MIN, 1 over MIA; 1 over DET. That’s some signature wins there.
So, no, I don’t put a whole lot of stock in it what so ever, especially being so early in when teams aren’t focusing on their starters so much as evaluating their ST-invite only guys and depth pieces.
websoulsurfer
Suit, I think he is saying that a player like JT is a luxury as depth that a contending team can afford, but a team like the Red Sox who are destined for last place should keep payroll down and play the kids to see what they have. THEN when they are closer to contending, bring in players like JT.
Am I right GA?
websoulsurfer
rsmith, what was the Sox spring training record last season? How did that hold up in the regular season?
What was the Angels spring training record last season? How did that hold up in the regular season?
Rsox
Historically speaking the teams with the best spring training records usually have lousy regular seasons. That being said, the Sox came out of nowhere to get within one game of going to the World Series in 2021 so it’s foolish to completely right them off in March
websoulsurfer
You are right that usually you cannot write off a team in spring training, but the Red Sox simply do not have the players to come close this season.
Compared to 2021
Bogaerts – gone and no one on the team of his caliber to play SS
Renfroe – gone and no one on team of his caliber to play RF
Vazquez – gone and no one on the team of his caliber
JD Martinez – gone and no, JT is not as good.
Arroyo back at 2B and Kike at SS. OUCH!!
Duvall in CF instead of Kike? Double OUCH!!
Yoshida is a huge question mark and Verdugo is not as good as Renfroe was in 2021. You have no clue what Yoshida will produce with the bat and his defense in Japan, which is nowhere near as difficult as LF in Fenway, makes Schwarber look like a Gold Glove winner.
If the Orioles succumb to injuries, the Red Sox might be able to climb out of the cellar, but it’s not likely they even do that let alone make the playoffs.
GASoxFan
Sorta websoul…
I don’t even really look at JT as true depth. He’s the sort of player you sign to offset at JBJ-type player, where you figure you under-pay for your CF because he has no bat, but +++ defense, then you overpay for a dedicated DH to balance it out.
Net you get stellar defense and combine two guys to produce at an average or slightly above average rate over the year.
Or, you could say he gives you a deeper lineup as ‘depth’… but in no world does he constitute on-the-field type depth because, as a defender, he STINKS and almost any farmland would outperform him.
But, yes, he is an icing on the cake type player, not one of your first acquisitions at one of the highest salaries when your team is lacking at all 3 OF positions, 2B, SS, C, and, could use platoon depth at 1B if not a late inning 3B defensive upgrade, and, expected starting rotation is probably just about the oldest in baseball.
GASoxFan
Rsox – the 2021 redsox weren’t within one game of the ws… they were 2 wins short, losing the series 4-2. It’s the same as saying we were 1 win away from the 49ers being super bowl champions. You’d say, wait, not so fast, they needed 2.
Also, the ’21 team had a significant number of stars on it, just like the ’13 team did, and, all of which are missing from this squad.
JoeBrady
You are just bashing no matter what.
==========================
This is where the haters run aground. From my readings in here, it feels like most fans dislike their GM. But the haters in here feel the need to dislike 100% of all moves, and the need to comment on it.
all in the suit that you wear
Every team needs spare parts aka depth. If Bloom got caught without depth, you would criticize that.
GASoxFan
Dh isn’t a spot you line up depth pieces to cover. Giving 1/15-16m or 2/25 to a 38/39 yr old 3b also isn’t a wise ‘depth’ move either given the other glaring holes on the team.
In fact, that Turner money would be much better spent on a true OF, put Yoshida in DH and as a 5th OFer for the turner money.
That would improve DH, improve OF defense, and give the benefit of improving SP results by virtue of the better defense, and, you’re not taking the age-related injury risks of putting a 38/39 year old on the field.
One thing I’ve noticed is this front office seems to be about a year delayed in its moves, they ignore doing the things everyone things are necessary, then, overreact the following year or two to try and compensate but do so at higher costs in money/opportunity cost, usually for a lesser player.
all in the suit that you wear
Turner is very similar offensively to JD Martinez and he can play 3B. So, I like the signing.
GASoxFan
Suit – that’s fine, you’re entitled to your opinion.
For me, he cost 50% more guaranteed money than JD; he’s about 3-4years older; you mention playing 3b…
In the last 4 years combined, Turner was worth -7 DRS at 3b (only +1 once, last year); his uzr/150 was -12.9 (2019) -3.5 (2020) -5.1(2021) and -12.2 (2022).
Turner’s fielding pct the last 4 years at 3b have been .973, .952, .961, and .961 respectively showing a general downward trend.
To put it in perspective, you saw Devers on tv last year, he had a .964 fielding pct, and a uzr/150 of -2.1 and you saw what that looked like on the field.
I don’t see Turner giving much value with the glove. He’s just an older player, and doesn’t have the reputation for work with video and helping coach other guys with their swing JD does.
Fever Pitch Guy
GASox – I’m glad you included that last sentence, because the casuals here have no idea how some players contribute behind the scenes to a team’s success.
JD is a hitting savant, he has helped his teammates immensely by taking a leadership role. Nothing against JT, but JD has twice the intelligence and is a consummate professional.
JT is basically an older Verdugo.
BlueSkies_LA
Yuck. Just yuck.
PulledaBloom
AITSTYW – He’s older and won’t be used at 3B plus he costs more.
Since so many of Bloom’s choices have been bad I do think the Turner signing was an exception. I’d rather have JD because they won’t move Devers to DH so Turner has no added value but is more expensive.
If there are any players who produce more than they cost, Turner may be the most likely to meet that goal if he can stay healthy and isn’t impacted by the beaning, the signing isn’t a bad one.
PulledaBloom
Fever – I think Turner is a notch or two up from Verdugo and Duvall. I consider Verdugo a younger version of Duvall. Basically, a league average player. Turner was a 120 and higher OPS+ guy but now is closer to 115. Probably 5 to 15 points higher than Duvall and Verdugo. About 40 points higher than Kiki. About 20 points higher than Arroyo. Likely to be comparable to Yoshida. If everyone was healthy, I would expect Turner to have the 3rd highest OPS+ behind Devers and Story.
This team really doesn’t have many guys who have upsides of 115 OPS+. They lost 3 guys in the off season and Yoshida and Turner are not enough to make up for those losses.
Pitching will need to carry the team in 2023. It was good to see Sale looking like the old Sale.
all in the suit that you wear
Why are you guys worried about Turner’s cost when the Red Sox are well below the luxury tax threshold? It is not a big deal. If they didn’t spend money, you would call them cheap.
GASoxFan
Suit –
Because there’s other positions that needed the resources much, much, much more.
I get your point is, ‘but they’re still under cbt, could’ve spent more’ but the idea is, death by 100 cuts. You spend unwisely in non-critical areas, and, you wind up unable to pour resources where they’re needed for top-end talent because you priced yourself out.
For example, this year projects to be one of the worst defensive outfields BOS has had in the last 25 years. Right side of the infield? Following close.
all in the suit that you wear
I doubt you or I can allocate resources better than the Red Sox Baseball Ops department.
GASoxFan
And that is the crux of it:
If you like the direction of the team and moves being made, you support bloom and the baseball ops dept.
If you dislike the direction of the team and moves being made, you don’t support bloom, you don’t support the ops dept.
As far as ability to allocate resources? I disagree. In fact, there’s a strong likelihood a chimpanzee with a set of red and green buttons could dictate a simulated offseason of yes/no choices on asset allocation better than bloom has.
Three bad finishes in 4 years with one season riding the remnants of a core from your predecessor are proof of that, after inheriting most of a core that won the most games in team history.
all in the suit that you wear
Comparing people to chimpanzees is not credible. As for a possible core from 2018, I don’t see it. Benintendi is no big deal. I don’t want to pay Bogaerts to age 40. Mookie was determined to be a free agent and only signed with the Dodgers because Covid happened after the trade. Three people isn’t even a core. I recommend you take a break from all the negative thinking. I don’t think it’s good for your health.
GASoxFan
You need to go back to 2019. There were more talented individuals on the team than Benny, Mookie, and Bogey.
And, it’s bad moves and squandering resources in 2020, 2021, and 2022 at issue. Not just spectacularly failing in the Bogey debacle at issue.
all in the suit that you wear
I don’t think it’s incompetence. I think the Red Sox were not trying very hard to compete in 2020 and 2021. They may have tried a little harder in 2022. I think they really stepped it up in 2023, but they will stay under the luxury tax and keep building the farm system. I think building a team from the farm system has been the plan all along. The Red Sox are not trading prospects to fill needs like contending teams do (because they are building the farm) and it keeps them from competing the best that they can. I don’t mind building a team from the farm. I think it is a better approach than the Padres where they are signing players until their age 40 season.
GASoxFan
You’re repeating the party line without questioning it Suit….
Why teardown to try and build a young core after ’19 when in ’19 you had…. a young talented core?
Amd IF you believe that isn’t after-the-fact lip service justification, then the question becomes, look at the moves made, the players NOT traded, the players that WERE traded and what was sought in return, and the blown decisions like creeping over the tax and blowing bonus pool and draft slot.
It doesn’t add up.
all in the suit that you wear
Who is the talented core from 2019 that they got rid of besides Benintendi, Betts and Bogaerts that were already discussed? Don’t tell me Chavis, Sam Travis, Brock Holt, ERod or Price. None of them were sure things. Out of these five, only Price had 2 somewhat good years after he left. Not a big deal. ERod is a bonehead who is lucky to get through 5 innings. I was happy to see him go.
all in the suit that you wear
By the way, I am not towing the party line. I am pushing back against extreme negativity which does not make sense. I also think running a baseball team is not as easy as you think it is.
SFBay314
Bummer, hope he recovers quickly.

Information isn’t that scary
MuleorAstroMule
I love information as much as the next guy but, for example, I don’t need to read how the arbitration process works in every article about arbitration eligible players. After over a decade, I’ve got it down (I think). A happy medium would be a paragraph or two of the most pertinent info and then a link to longer article for those who want to delve deeper. But yes I understand that this is free and I can just scroll or use the app and my first world problems won’t save the dying planet, etc.
Claydagoat
I mean, it is free. And you don’t have to read things you don’t want to.
So I think that pretty much solves that.

They could also throw in a player’s biography on every page as well. And their Baseball Reference stats. And the entire text to The Old Man and the Sea while they’re at it. At some point “You don’t have to read things you don’t want to” is a meaningless defense. Sometimes, extra words in an article are not contextually “useful” under any normal definition of the word. That is a totally valid criticism.
Chicken In Philly?
Except these types of injuries can be career ending, and Turner was their second biggest off-season acquisition. He hasn’t played a game yet for them. Detailing how he ended up there isn’t needless.
Occams_hairbrush
If they threw in the entire text of The Old Man in the Sea to each post. I would just stop reading the free content offered to me. I wouldn’t continue to read it and complain about it. You either get this distinction or you don’t. it depends on one’s sense of entitlement.

Constructive criticism isn’t “entitlement”, as you well know. Never lie again. Ever.

I hope you are ok and make a quick recovery. Prayers to you.
Jacksson13
Pitcher should be immediately suspended for a period of time equal to that period for which Turner is unable to/unavailable to perform at his full level of expertise.
This is MLB, not little league. Pitchers need to be held accountable for any and all injuries caused as a result of the WEAPON they are slinging in the direction of the defenseless batter.
King Floch
What an impressively low IQ take.
Bravo.
Rexwood
In other words you think it was intentional? How stupid are you?
RSmith
3 of the 4 pitches to Turner, that AB, were high and tight. It definitely wasnt “intentional”, but it definitely isnt a surprise either. The pitcher knew what he was doing, and the risks involved.
GASoxFan
And the batter knew what he was doing, crowding the plate in his preferred style.
The hit was an accident for sure, but either guy could’ve backed off and reduced risk. Pitcher has as much right to throw high and tight as the batter has to crowd the plate.
Sunday Lasagna
Look at where Turner is positioned, his feet are just inside the batters box and his head is actually over the gap between home plate and the batters box and he doesn’t move it back as the pitch approaches. The catcher didn’t even move his body, just reached up but Turners head was there. The umpires face was in that gap but he moves it. I never want to see anyone get hurt, but this pitch was just inside, not that far inside. . Very unfortunate incident and wish JT the best, but in no way is this the pitchers fault and pitchers need to throw pitches in that gap between home plate and the batters box to keep batters off the plate. It’s been a part of baseball since baseball began.
GASoxFan
Between his highly advanced age, the fact he didn’t move at all, makes you wonder if he didn’t really pick up the pitch well.
Did he think it wasn’t going to rise as high as it did and expected to get hit in the arm, free base? Did he think it wasn’t coming as close inside?
They say reaction rates and vision decrease with everyone as you age. I wonder if his aggressive stance combined with father time creeping in played a role?
RSmith
Stupid comment. Was Tony C too advanced in age as well. Such poor taste.
See GA, you come out with a good counter point, in your first comment. Then you just dumb it down in your second.
GASoxFan
Your opinion rsmith.
It wouldnt be the first time a player had a drastic change in visual acuity year over year – cite to Dan Uggla and anyone else you choose.
The facts are, player was getting pitched high and tight throughout an AB. It wasn’t a shock where a guy was down and away 4 straight pitches.
Then, a high and tight ball comes closer and everyone reacts…m except the batter. The ump? Yes. Catcher? Yes. Hitter? Nope.
It’s a fair question whether he saw it coming at all, or, if he mis judged it.
warnbeeb
I would say Manning got that ball to high. I wouldn’t say the catcher just reached up. That pitch was not good.
I’ve been a Turner fan going all the way back to his Mets days. I’m mostly a Tiger fan and I was not and have not been impressed all that much with Matt Manning. I doubt Manning threw up in there on purpose. His control is not good.
Claydagoat
Fabulous victim blaming.
THEY LIVE!!!
Gasbag– What are you like 21 years young? Have you even reached puberty?
websoulsurfer
Manning had walked the previous batter and Turner had two balls thrown to him already in that at bat. The catcher was calling for a pitch in the dirt. Nothing was intentional. It wasn’t even that Turner was crowding the plate Manning just had zero control in the 1st.
PulledaBloom
GA – I attribute this injury to Manfred. See the league office is responsible for the extended strike zone that is now closer to the head of the batter.
A pitcher trying to pinpoint a pitch at the top of the zone at the inside corner of the plate is throwing it roughly 6 inches higher than he did before 2015. That means pitches that used to hit the shoulder or upper body are now going to hit the head/face areas.
So, with higher velocities, less control and an expanded upward strike zone it’s not surprising the increased number of pitches that hit the batter in the head/face. On top of that, we still have guys who prefer to crowd the plate which has been around since baseball began. These batters SHOULD expect to get hit BUT now their likely target area is 6 inches higher. Elbow guards soon will need to be should guards. New technology in the helmets should be pursued by the MLB to make things safer for the hitter.
Harper slips on a wet base and new bases are designed. Posey gets run over so new home plate rules are quickly implemented. Too bad the MLB hasn’t enacted changes to increase the safety of the batters as quickly as ways to speed up the game. Money talks and safety lags in comparison.
PulledaBloom
websoul – It’s spring training and I’m guessing the plan for the day was to get ready for the season by working hitters high and tight. Clearly, early in the spring, pitchers won’t be as accurate so this should be expected.
The real problem will occur when a scrub SP hits a Devers and breaks his wrist, hand or face. Then, Boston has a severe problem and it’s all because the WBC is this season so leading up to the event more unqualified SPs are pitching spring training games.
All fans can do is watch the games and hope nobody gets hurt, just like Football pre-season games. Nothing can ruin a season faster than a key injury in a game that doesn’t count, including the WBC games.
BlueSkies_LA
I blame Manfred for the weather. It stinks, and he hasn’t done a THING about it.
Jacksson13
No I am not saying that it was intentional.
I am saying the when a pitched ball hits a batter, the batter ends up missing time and costing his team the benefit of his performance on the field.
CURRENTLY
What happens to the PROFESSIONAL pitcher that threw the pitch?
NOTHING
What happens to the team that the pitcher plays for?
NOTHING
There needs to be some cost to the team & pitcher that threw the ball.
Dorothy_Mantooth
@Jacksson13 – The only time that would ever be considered would be if it was deemed the pitcher hit a batter in the head on purpose. Even if he did, you can’t tie a suspension to the length that another player is out due to his injury. The MLBPA would never agree to that. They could make it a very long suspension in the rule book but determining intent would be very hard to prove/enforce on the field and there would be tons of appeals as well.
Sure, these guys are professional pitchers but balls can slip out of their hands from time to time and accidentally hit players in the face, head, hand, etc…where damage can be done. It’s unfortunate but it is part of the game and part of the risk players take by playing this sport. Let’s hope the wounds are superficial and Justin is back on the field soon.
RSmith
“but balls can slip out of their hands from time to time and accidentally hit players in the face”
3 of 4 pitches during that AB were hight and tight. Are you saying that all 3 were slips? Come on, dont just guess, watch the At Bat first, then comment.
farscott
Manning walked the previous batter on four straight pitches. His first pitch to JT was high and inside, the second was very low but down the middle, and we all know what happened next.
Looks like Manning had control issues.
warnbeeb
Yep
Dorothy_Mantooth
@rsmith – Pitchers have control issues too. There’s no way the Detroit pitcher was intentionally throwing head high fastballs to Turner or any other batter in spring training. These kids are being asked to throw at maximum velocity and when doing so, control of where the ball goes can go awry really fast, especially with less experienced pitchers. The difference between a knee high fastball and a head high fastball is an issue with a pitcher’s release point. He was probably 1/10 of a second early with his release point, causing the ball to be up in the zone. It’s unfortunate but it’s part of the game. I’m just glad that it sounds like Turner avoided serious injuries; 16 stitches and some swelling is much better than a broken facial bone, bad concussion or something even worse than that.
Jacksson13
I am concerned what is fair to the game.
I don’t care about the MLBPA’s opinion.
I don’t care about MLB’s opinion.
I am not referring to a pitch thrown to deliberately hit a batter
When a batter is hit by a pitched ball and that leads to missed time for the batter, the pitcher on the opposing team should be suspended from play for a period of time equal to the batter’s time in which he is unable to perform to his maximum level of performance.
It is unfair that one team suffers a loss while the other team is unaffected.
pinkerton
you’re kind of an idiot Jacksson

Jacksson, You were wrong the 1st time. No reason to repeat that nonsense.
Jacksson13
So explain how the outdated notion of, “just part of the game” is fair?
One side suffers a loss of a player and the other side just says, “SORRY” ??
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
@Pinkerton lol I’ve never heard that one before , (taking notes…)
Rsox
So Matt Manning, who has never faced Turner before, internationally throws at him in a spring training game that means absolutely nothing because…?
The pitch got away from him. Turner and every other hitter in every league in the world all know that is a risk the moment they step into the box. Trying to find ill intent in everything his a terrible way to live
Hired Gun 23
Not intentional by any means. Just glad it wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been. Wishing, JT a complete recovery!
drewm
Ignore the replies from the CTE crowd. Hitting someone in the head should be a flat 30 day suspension. /end
elmedius
Same suspension for a batter if he lines one back into the pitchers head?
GASoxFan
Likewise are you calling for a ban from MLB if he makes a spikes-up Machado slide into Pedroia and ruins a guys career?
Jacksson13
No.
What takes place out of the hand of a PROFESSIONAL MLB pitcher is controllable.
What happens to a batted ball, due to everything that pitchers can do to a pitched ball is out of the control of the batter..
websoulsurfer
So your handle means you are a 13-year-old?
elmedius
I don’t know… I thought 13 year olds were aware that good hitters frequently try to hit the ball in specific directions.
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
Have you ever pitched before Jacksson??? There are variables that go into throwing a pitch to a batter that all come together in one spontaneous moment: some of these variables include the relative humidity and current temperature when the pitch is thrown, also the extent the laces of a standard baseball protrude out to facilitate grip, the stickiness of the said baseball, the actual manufacturing glitches of a standard baseball, the natural oils of the pitcher’s hand and extraneous crap that can be randomly or otherwise be found on a thrown baseball…then factor in how close the batter is standing to the plate, the general awareness & attention of the batter, and of his ability at that certain point in time of reacting in a split-second. All these variables can conspire together and result in a HBP that was not in the least intentional. Baseball is a game of inches man. I don’t mean to be so pedantic but it’s only to illustrate how it’s not so cut & dry that a pitcher can command every pitch & player can avoid every errant pitch.
websoulsurfer
They don’t have pitchers in T-ball.
King Floch
We get it, Jackson, you’re a moron.
No need to keep driving the point home.

IgnorantSOB-
Well said. It would also probably help if MLB didn’t change the ball every year.
Jacksson13
Yes I have pitched.
I liked to pitch inside as well.
Never hit anybody.
The batters knew I pitched inside and adjusted their position in the batters box to take that into account.
I learned well; my dad was an absolute magician on the mound.
Jacksson13
No need for cheap shots.
You are frree to express your point of view on this issue
Michael Macaulay-Birks
So is pitchers can be suspended because of a hit by pitch what about players that slide dirty in the second base? Many Machado would’ve had to retire.
websoulsurfer
Jackson, little league doesn’t count. If you pitched for more than a game or two, you hit someone. So why lie? What did you gain from it other than further damaging your reputation here?
Rsox

Probably shouldn’t stand on top of the plate, huh?
Fever Pitch Guy
Neon – He has done that his entire career, but now that he’s old he probably doesn’t realize his reflexes aren’t what they used to be.
He’s a great guy, but yeah he has poor judgement (ie: Covid WS celebration) and I do have concerns about his lack of fundamentals.
Hopefully he recovers quickly, stays safe throughout the season, then calls it a career. He has nothing more to prove.
GASoxFan
Of course, there is extra money on the table in ’24 if his production lags.
Fever Pitch Guy
GASox – I thought $22M guaranteed for 2 years was absurd even BEFORE he stepped into that pitch. He’s declined 5 straight years, so why on earth would Bloom assume he’d improve now?
And it’s very rare I don’t understand contract info on BR, so can you please explain why BR mentions a $6.7M buyout for 2024 despite the fact it’s a player option?
Does that mean he gets $6.7M for 2024 even if he decides to not pick up the $13.4M option? That sounds absurd to me.
GASoxFan
Correct Fever.
The buyout is 6.7m on a 13.4m player option for ’24.
But, this year is an 8.3m guarantee, with, 1m in incentives. That makes the guaranteed minimum 15m, 1m in incentives, and an extra 6.7m on top of that if the player exercises 2024 option.
It’s all a creative accounting way to get the cbt hit spread over 2 years. In exchange for the creative accounting payroll flexibility and taking his money over 2 years instead of 1, chaim gave a 6.7 pillow contract option for next season.
THEY LIVE!!!
I thought Yankee fans were the worst ever but I think you and Gasbag take the cake as crass, clueless, and full of yourselves.
Jacksson13
Hey, Moderator !!
Why are all these multiple posts taking place?
I am only entering it ONCE !!
Fever Pitch Guy
GASox – I still don’t quite understand the player buyout.
Buyouts have always been paid by the team when they choose not to pick up an option year.
So if JT chooses not to get paid $13.4M to play for the Sox, he gets a $6.7M consolation prize? That means all he needs to do to make out better is to sign with another team for more than $6.7M.
Sounds like it’s almost a guarantee the Sox are paying JT $15M for one year of service. Not a smart decision by Bloom IMO.
Fever Pitch Guy
Jacksson – The same thing is happening with your name, the “s” is multiplying.
You must be in The Matrix.
GASoxFan
That’s exactly how I read it Fever, and, it’s why I say he got a 6.7m pillow offer in exchange for agreeing to get paid over two seasons to lower the CBT hit.
It’s about as naked a manipulation of values as possible
BlueSkies_LA
Check my work, but I believe JT holds the HBP record for active players. I know he holds the all-time HBP record for the Dodgers.
Fever Pitch Guy
Blue – Consider your work checked.
Turner is 4th among active players, behind only Rizzo & Marte & Abreu.
And JT has 1,400 fewer PA’s than Rizzo.

Dodger fan here. I am appalled at some of the Red Sox fans comments. Could be some of the worst fans ever, anywhere. JT is worthy of more respect than some of the crap I read here. Red Sox fans really don’t deserve such a solid player as Justin Turner is. No wonder why JD Martinez wanted to play somewhere else. Hopefully Turner recovers quickly, reclaims himself and puts up MVP type numbers. Then I hope he signs next year somewhere else!
GASoxFan
Turner had never EVER, put up mvp type numbers, not even in his prime, which he is clearly on the downswing from.
If he continues his trajectory from the last 5 years he likely hits slightly over league average, a slight decline from last year, and that will be a good season from him and only a slight overpay from Bloom should he opt-out of next year’s extra 6.7m…
Best player and team can hope for is the scare today doesn’t leave lasting psychological trauma making him question plate approach or alter what he’s used to mechanically with his hitting.
Mi Casas es tu Casas
Every sox fan here has offered their support and well wishes to turner for a fast recovery and you’re appalled? Okay snowflake.

websoulsurfer
JT is one of the leaders in HBP every season because of where he stands in the box. crowding the plate is part of his game, So, yes where he stands in the batter’s box matters.
This time it was a wild starter that elevated a poorly controlled pitch and he got hit in the head.
Jacksson13
Since MLB doesn’t seem to have reservations to changing rules, why not just change the positioning of the batters box to decrease the possibility of of a batter being hit by a pitched ball.
OR
Have the umpires empowered to enforce an invisible batters box.
The batters box is defined by chalked lines on the ground.
Merely extend those lines invisibly upward and forbid ANY PART OF THE BATTER from physically extending beyond the batters box. While you are at it, have the umpires enforce the sanctity of the batters box by forbidding the players from obliterating the lines which define the batters box. SIMPLE = Problem Solved !!
websoulsurfer
Seriously? Have you ever swung a bat in a game? You did that with no part of your body leaving the batter’s box? Give us all a break and STFU.
B dog 351
Jacksosonn13 . That makes absolutely no sense. So what does the umpire do if they crowd the plate? Automatic out , strike ? I thought mlb is trying to speed the game up not slow it down . I am sure this incident was not deliberate in a spring training game. My opinion you crowd the plate you take your chances . You swing the bat body parts leave the batters box . Or in your case the imaginary safe space. WTF
Mantle536
I’m a lifelong Yankees fan, but I sincerely hope Mr. Turner is Okay & doesn’t suffer any longterm issues from this incident. Best wishes for a full recovery Mr. Turner.
Your health & wellbeing are far more important than any rivalry; I just wish more fans took that attitude about sports rivalries. Good luck, Justin.
Sabermetric Acolyte
Wow, I winced just watching that video. I’m happy to hear it’s likely just stitches and not much more damage. By the looks of it it could have been a lot worse. I hope he takes his time and gets monitored closely. There’s been a few players who didn’t know they got a concussion and it ended up having serious effects down the line.
You hate to see any player go down like that.
YankeesBleacherCreature
It’s ST so, yeah, use a lengthier concussion protocol.
Sabermetric Acolyte
Hopefully Cora and anyone else makes sure he goes slow. Turner strikes me as the gung-ho type that would ignore what they’d consider little aches and pains to get back on he field. While a somewhat admirable quality taking a fastball too the face is no joke.
JoeBrady
But this is more likely to be mental than physical, so getting back sooner might be preferable.

Oddly enough, Justin Turner was beaned by another “MM” back when he was in college.
