Exciting for a’s fans to ponder upcoming season and the attendance records that will be set!
The whole attendance thing is a misnomer. In the 70’s the A’s fielded teams several future Hall of Famers and won championships and were still middle/bottom of the pack in attendance. Same for the late 80’s-early 90’s teams that had the “Bash Brothers”, Rickey Henderson, Dennis Eckersley, etc. The A’s franchise record for attendance came in 1990 when they drew 2.9 million in attendance and finished in MLB (that season proved an outlier as they would not have another top 10 finsh in attendance, let alone top 5).
A new stadium may change that for the short term but big attendance has never been a thing for the Athletics franchise across three different cities/states
What happened to your usual joke? Did you get hacked by an equally corny person?
The A’s have been a revolving door of mediocrity. They’ve only finished above .500, 6 of the past 16 seasons.
When is Moneyball 2 coming out?
This is wrong lol, 8 of last 13 since 2010, 6th in wins since 2000 under this same front office. Can’t believe how quick everyone is to act like they’re a dumpster fire, around the league many teams have been rebuilding for much longer
They aren’t a dumpster fire because they were to cheap to buy the dumpster itself.
People don’t really understand sabermetrics so they get frightened and angry, like a dog barking at a thunderstorm.
There’s nothing about saber-metrics that is frightening. It’s just obviously inadequate.
Just out of curiosity, what is the low payroll model team winning WS that puts sabermetrics to shame? The Rays have had some more success than the A’s but every other low payroll team pretty much does worse.
Also, isn’t starting the list of records right after 8 consecutive winning seasons a little desperate?
KC won a WS and Cleveland had a great season last year. Statistics have always been a big part of baseball.. the saber-metric folks are just way more arrogant about it.
When I heard more than one of them say stuff like “RBIs don’t matter” and “There’s no such thing as clutch”, I realized that they were adolescents.
No offense to you personally, I hope your team(s) perform well this year.
Cleaveland is a little better off than the smaller market teams and KC had almost 20 consecutive bad years, though if you believe that it’s all or nothing then I guess KC would be the model.
Saying there’s no such thing as clutch was kind of weird since Beane’s most WS competitive teams were defeated by the post season superhuman Derek Jeter and friends. I do get saying RBI’s (and wins) don’t matter, it may not be entirely accurate but they are team stats.
I’m in Chicago and the the self anointed “geniuses” on the radio are members of the saber-metric cult. Dan Berstein hates Derek Jeter, because he is one of the most clutch players of all-time. I had a stats guy here a few years ago, trying to convince me that Adam Dunn was a better player than Rickey Henderson, because his OPS was much higher… unbelievable.
Two quick points about saber-metrics (because you seem very reasonable):
– Stats are premises, not conclusions.
– Saber-metrics are to baseball, what accounting is to business. Accountants are great at explaining what happened last year, but don’t look for them to provide any insight moving forward.
Thanks for the reply.
Over 500 = 2021, 2020 2019, 2018, 2013, 2012
Under .500 = 2022, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2011, 2009, 2008, 2007
They were over .500 during the pretend Covid season and finished 81-81 in 2010.
LOL indeed.
Most of those losing reasons were rebuild seasons and the boring and mediocre bob geren coached teams. Then they contend for several seasons and start selling of players, rinse and repeat
88-74 in 2014 and made the yoffs lol
That’s correct, but they have only been over .500 7 times over the past 16 seasons, and that includes the fake Covid short season.
… not sure why movies would be made about mediocrity
Major League Baseball is to blame for this situation in Oakland. Rodger Goodell is a joke, but can you imagine Paul Tagliabue allowing this kind of disaster play out for this long in the NFL? Or David Sterling? No way. MLB owners need to take some pride in the brand and make some hard decisions about Bay Area baseball. The current situation is bad for the game, bad for the local fans, and bad for the fans in cities hoping to get a MLB franchise. Manfred isn’t the kind of leader who can take charge of a situation and force a positive outcome. He was hired to be a yes man. This ordeal needs a stronger hand.
The replacement will be hired by the same team owners. The name will change, eventually, but the role will remain the same.
