Oh I do like Steve’s Grossman observation/suggestion for Toronto.
NoSaint
@TheGreatBaseballMind
He’d be a nice weak side platoon bat for Varsho or KK.
TheGreatBaseballMind
Belt at DH, too. Yes. I like it.
Rsox
Not necessarily. Springer will be play CF or DH with Merrifield playing RF against tougher Lefties. The Jays do need another bench player though so Grossman would be a fit
NoSaint
@Rsox
Over Grossman’s past 3 seasos against lefties, he put up a 139 wRC+ in 379 PA’s. In the same period versus lefties, Merrifield put up a 96 wRC+ in 412 PA’s.
If the Jays sign Grossman, Merrifield won’t see much time in the OF.
Rsox
I guess theoretically both could be out there with Grossman in LF/RF and Merrifield in CF against lefties

No way was that Gleyber Torres for James Wood proposal serious. That makes absoutley zero sense for the Nationals.

I’ve asked some stupid questions in my day…I freely admit it.
I’ve never seen such a stupid question asked. Why would any GM tear down their team, assemble a bunch of prospects, then deal arguably the top prospect for someone who doesn’t really move any needles for 2 seasons?
mlb1225
The thing (at least to me) that sells it as sarcasm and probably wasn’t expecting it to get answered was the it would “jumpstart the Nats’ rebuild”. This is literally the complete opposite of a rebuilding trade.
hyraxwithaflamethrower
Total fanboy question, but I’ve seen worse. We all remember the Sanchez & Andujar for (cost-controlled young superstar’s name here) proposals.
vtadave
Kind of odd that Steve took the time to answer a ridiculous question. I’d have kept scrolling.
Actually I probably would have responded something sarcastic like: “No chance the Yankees take an unproven guy like Wood for a 26-year-old with elite MI power like Torres. I’d need a second guy like Hassell to consider this”.
mlb1225
Maybe he answered it because it was so absurd. “The Yankees clear up their infield logjam and the Nats jumpstart their rebuild.” Like this is the complete opposite of a rebuilding trade.
Rsox
I’m not sure the Yankees get James Woods for Glyeber. If Teams were willing to part with top tier prospects for him he wouldn’t still be a Yankee right now
Joe says...
Yankees can’t move Torres until they are sure DJ is fully healthy regardless.
mlb1225
There’s no way they would get Wood back, or another prospect of his caliber from another team. Torres is a good player, but he’s certaintly not worth a consensus top 30 prospect.

Glad my question on Cease got answered, even if it’s not the one I was hoping for. I’m going to be very curious to see whether the Sox tear it down and start another rebuild if they don’t make the playoffs this year. A lot of money is coming off the books and a lot of options are starting. They could pick up the options and trade or just cut ties altogether. It’s weird to me that at this point next year, I could be daydreaming of the White Sox playoff chances or daydreaming of their prospect haul working out better this time. But one thing’s for sure: hope won’t die…for better or worse.

This site did report that Kepler is unlikely to be traded.

I’m surprised the majority of voters think the Rockies will lose 100 games. Three teams lost 100 or more games last season. Nat’s, A’s, and Pirates. Those 3 had the 3 worst team WAR last season.
All pitchers WAR:
Nat’s -9.2
Pirates -10.3
A’s -14.4
Rockies -5.2
Non-pitchers WAR
Nat’s -12.4
Pirates -16.7
A’s -17.5
Rockies -8.9
I’m not a Rockies fan. They are a bad team, but the pitching staff hasn’t changed that much from 2022. And they’ll benefit from the balanced scheduled with fewer games against NLW teams. Plus, a clear home field advantage. They’ve never lost 100 games, even in 2021 when the Giants won 107 games and the Dodgers won 106.

Very good analysis, reasoning and write up, tad2b13. Thank you for sharing.

Hey now, don’t forget to give credit where credits due. The reds lost 100 on the dot last year too. Probably doesn’t change your rankings much either. Hard to squint and see if the reds can be any better than last year yet. Only hope is the alleged prospects we have been gutting the team to obtain. They are probably a few more years away and we have to bank on them peaking at once. At least Friday night games will provide more walking space for my son and I.
Jean Matrac
You’re right. I missed the Reds. Actually they were right behind the Rockies in those stats, slightly worse than them, but not nearly as bad as those other 3 teams. Not a Reds fan myself, but I feel bad for Reds fans. Though with their farm they’ll be back.
Rsox
I don’t believe that the Rockies will lose 100 games but 85-90 is not out of the question
PunkRockies
The Rockies didn’t lose 100 last year, and they certainly will be better this year. I know it’s a low bar, but people seem to have an irrational hatred of purple.

The way some questions are worded, it’s very easy to attract trolls who just trash every team but their own (and their own teams too, sometimes).

The S.F.Giants has not improved under Farhan Zaidi because Zaidi will not give out a contract over 3 years. In my opinion Zaidi has not signed Logan Webb because he knows it will take more than 3 years and 45 million to get it done. Also with Zaidi contract up this year I hope they don’t renew his contract.
Samuel
Breck68;
I believe the Giants have not improved under Farhan Zaidi because their farm system has been bad.
When he came aboard I read numerous articles that the plan was to develop the next generation of championship Giants players. All they have to show are a few so-so players and a few more quality prospects. In fact, their farm system rating has been going down for the last year or so because some of their highly regarded prospects hit a wall in the high minors. Please keep in mind that all MLB teams have some quality minor league prospects. The Giants don’t seem very good at scouting and developing players, and have to rank in the bottom 1/3 in doing so.
As for giving out numerous long-term contracts – that sort of thing comes from ownership, not the POBO. Like any large business, the person running the operation has to get approval from the owner(s) on budgets.

Surprisingly a few questions about the J.J. Bleday/A.J. Puk trade. It seems some may think the Marlins sold high on Bleday but i think the A’s sold low on Puk. Bleday leaves one organization stocked full of corner Outfield options for another and who knows what kind of chance he’ll get in Oakland while Puk has the ability to at least be a “poor man’s” Josh Hader
In Seager/Hader We Trust > the 70 MM DH Ohtani
I’d say the opposite here, though I do think the Marlins made yet another great deal.
