The Cardinals have won their arbitration case against Genesis Cabrera, per Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. He’ll now take home $950K in 2023, rather than the $1.15MM he filed for.
The left-hander had a down year in 2022, working to a 4.63 ERA across 44 2/3 frames for St Louis. Cabrera saw his strikeout rate crater to just 16.5%, and his home run rate increase by 3.1 percentage points.
Originally signed out of the Dominican Republic, Cabrera first appeared in the big leagues in 2019, but it was the following season that he really showed his promise. That year, Cabrera tossed 22 1/3 innings of 2.42 ERA ball, combining an impressive 33.3% strikeout rate with a 16.7% walk rate. He fell back a little in 2021, but still posted a solid 3.73 ERA over 70 frame, picking up 28 holds in the process as the Cards afforded him more high leverage roles.
The 26-year-old throws a mid-90s fastball alongside a curveball and changeup. While the 2022 season was a step back for Cabrera, the Cardinals clearly believe in his arm enough to tender him a contract through arbitration. Another year like last may make that decision a little less likely next winter, but for now Cabrera figures to offer the Cardinals a valuable left-handed option out of the bullpen.
Go team!
Good, guy was negative value last year and career.
He’s loved in the clubhouse though
That’s what minimum wage is for.
I’m sure you would know.
Weak-man thought.
Why are you so anti-player?
Simon Hampton, why do you think so many teams are winning arbitration?
He doesn’t have the courage to say why because it would upset their MLB counterparts they hope to impress.
Was the word against necessary in the headline? Not a surprising result for first year arbitration elegible with negative value over his career.
What word would be more appropriate?
Cardinals win Genisis Cabrera Arbitration Case doesn’t sound quite as negative and combative. I’m sure that’s the goal though.
But it kinda is combative. Consider what argument the Cards must have made AGAINST him in order to win. Usually at least somewhat belittling, combative.
I identify as the word “against” and find it awfully offensive you would say I’m “not necessary”.
Teams are winning these cases by a large margin this year. It would seem the players are simply asking too much, but looking at Matt Schwartz’ projections it seems the arbitrator is ruling on lower salaries than expected in many cases (not necessarily this one).
They are probably in bed with the sports books, er, owners.
Several examples of players winning, though. I think this is more a function of teams and players testing the new CBA and arbitration limits looking for precedent setting. Historically, few players go to arbitration because it can be so heated.
They probably argued that Cabrera was the reason they got swept in the Wild Card round last year.
Look at the trend in K rates over the past three seasons! Absolutely brutal, especially for a young guy.
Did he cry like a baby, or is that just a Corbin Burnes thing?
You must be fun at parties
I am. I’ll drink you under a table sweetheart, I’m from Wisconsin and I’m Irish.
If anyone that lost had a good case, it was Burnes.
Agreed Burnes likely will be the most screwed by the arb system this year
TIL expressing any form of displeasure is “crying like a baby.”
Stop crying
Maybe he would have won the hearing if name was Leviticus Cabrera
Lazarus Cabrera would have at least lead to an appeal (resurrection).
The arbitrator went Old Testament on his @$$.
Religious commentary has no place in baseball.
I disagree. Bob and Tom’s “First Baseball Game” makes me laugh as hard now as it did 20 years ago.
WWJ(L)D? (What would Jesùs (Luzardo) do?)
It doesn’t sound like their is much room for subjectivity in the process. The arbitrators take the midpoint of the 2 numbers and then decide whether the players stats fit above or below that midpoint when compared to precedents for that stat line. Seems to me that if you aim too high, the midpoint gets too far from the precedents and they end up with the bottom number. I suppose it’s about knowing the comparisons and setting your number so the midpoint is on them or just below them. You get your high number and set a new precedent for the guys behinds you.
Maybe the arbitrators do watch the games.
The Cardinals need to save every million they can to keep the area around the stadium renovated!
This will be the lowest Opening Day payroll for the Cardinals since 2017, not counting the covid year.
