After spending most of his career in right field and spending much of 2022 in center, it’s possible the reigning AL MVP will be taking reps in left field this spring. Yankees manager Aaron Boone tells reporters, including MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch, that Judge playing some left field is “on the table” for this spring.
Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported yesterday that this was a consideration, with the goal being to allow slugger Giancarlo Stanton, who figures to be the team’s primary designated hitter, to play right on his days in the outfield due to Yankee Stadium’s outfield being far more spacious in left than in right. For his part, Judge told reporters, including ESPN’s Marly Rivera, that he wouldn’t mind Stanton playing more right field and taking reps in left if needed.
Stanton struggled with durability early on in his Yankees career, including just 41 games played in the 2019 and 2020 seasons combined. Since then, his transition to primarily playing DH has seemingly helped him stay on the field, as he played 249 games combined across the past two seasons, with just 64 of those games including an appearance in the outfield. In 2022, 34 of Stanton’s 38 games in the outfield took place in right, as Judge spent most of his time in center field. This year, 2022 trade deadline acquisition Harrison Bader figures to get most of the reps in center field, leaving Judge to spend more time in left if Stanton is to continue to make most his outfield starts in right.
More from the American League…
- The Athletic’s Corey Brock discussed yesterday the role of Mariners right-hander Matt Brash, who is set to begin the 2023 season as a member of the bullpen. Brash made the 2022 Opening Day roster as a starter but struggled mightily, posting a 7.65 ERA across five starts before being demoted to Triple-A. Brash returned later in the season as a reliever and dominated, posting a 2.35 ERA in 30 2/3 innings of work out of the bullpen down the stretch. Brock notes that Brash hopes to get another shot at starting in the future, and though he isn’t being stretched out this spring, the Mariners remain open to the possibility down the line.
- Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris spoke to the media, including Chris McCosky of The Detroit News, yesterday about the relatively quiet offseason in Detroit. Harris made note that, follow a disappointing 96-loss season, it didn’t make sense to acquire short term veterans who would take up what he called valuable at-bats that could go to young players who would be part of the next core. Detroit acquired a few such players, particularly in the trade that sent reliever Gregory Soto to the Phillies. That deal brought back Matt Vierling, Nick Maton, and Donny Sands, all of whom figure to get playing time in the big leagues with Detroit in 2023.
- Staying in the AL Central, White Sox GM Rick Hahn discussed how Chicago’s offseason had gone with reporters yesterday, including James Fegan of The Athletic. The White Sox made three key additions to their roster following a disappointing 81-81 campaign, signing righty Mike Clevinger, outfielder Andrew Benintendi, and most recently infielder Elvis Andrus to big league deals, with Benintendi’s five-year, $75MM contract being the only multiyear pact of the group. Hahn, referring back to his comments earlier in the offseason that he expected the club to be active on the trade market, noted the discrepancy between that expectation and what came to pass, saying “I did expect there to be more trades… You go into the offseason with needs and potential fits, and over the course of the offseason, you adjust based on what’s viable, both in free agency and via trade. Sometimes teams are pricing guys differently than expected.” As Fegan notes, a quiet offseason on the south side is somewhat unsurprising giving the club’s stated expectation that payroll would stay largely static headed into 2023.

I guess the Yankees got the left fielder they were searching for all along. One problem is solved. Now, right field on the other hand…

Cashman is disturbed because he’s down with the Hickness (ohhh AHAH AH!)

You seem to be pitching comments as fast as a Degrom fastball.

Where did the Mariners go? One Brash moment.
Mickey777
Pretty obvious that if Stanton is to play OF in Yankee Stadium it would be in right. Maybe they’ll consider a left handed DH type.
Profar is not a good fit here, they have too many infielders. He fits best with a team that could take advantage of his diversity, plus he’s way too expensive.
Superstar Prospect Wander Javier
By diversity, do you mean a mediocre LF and not much else?
Rsox
Profar is not a legitimate option in the middle Infield any more, he is at best a LF/DH/maybe a 1B if you’re desperate enough
Poster formerly known as . . .
Actually, Mickey, when Giancarlo came aboard in 2018, he played 36 games in left field and 37 games in right field, and he was credited with 4 DRS, 23.1 UZR/150 and 0 OAA in left field, compared to 1 DRS, 13.0 UZR/150 and 1 OAA in right field.
Bright Side
There aren’t any available players good enough to cross the tax threshold. As for having too many infielders, it made no sense for them to bring back IKF for $6.5mil. He’s a useless player. Cashman did the same a year ago when he brought back Urshela and weakened the team further in trading him to the Twins.
LordD99
None of Stanton’s injuries with the Yankees have occurred playing the field. They happen when he sits on then bench a half between ABs. His muscles stay warmer and loose while in the field. He’ll still get injured, but they should deploy him more in the OF to increase roster flexibility. Frankly, they should turn over right to Stanton and left to Judge, which opens up DH for Gleyber and will allow them to play both Volpe and Peraza in the middle infield.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Aaron Hicks would like a word or two with you.
ohyeadam
Hicks can be off day/injury filler sitting on the pine. It’s not like he’s Gardner who continually played his way into a starting role
LordD99
Scarily ohyeadam, Gardner might still be out best LFer at 39 and a year off!
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
Oh Lord, yeah!! Let’s take our best outfielder from his ideal position just so Giancarlo can proceed to pop something in his heel or stub his barely sutured-on toe as he proceeds to play Rightfield. This would absolutely not be your optimal defensive alignment for the Yanks. Leave Stanton at DH please, guys. Boonie was this your idea?
LordD99
Yankee Stadium LF is way more difficult than right. Judge’s talents are better served in center and left, the bigger fields.
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
My point was just that he’s never played that position to my knowledge…and that more running around in that vast LF for Judge may not be the most ideal to preserve his legs/health in the long term. He’s such a big guy…I’d say keep him where he’s most comfortable and be risk averse when it comes to over-extending him in the outfield.
LordD99
@Ignorant s-o-b, agreed. I don’t think we have to worry. This might be a case where they want to have Judge familiarize himself in LF for overall lineup flexibility, but he will still be the primary RFer. If Judge plays 150 games, I can see something like 100 games in RF, 20 in center, 20 in left, maybe DH 10.
chedster
1) Fire Boone.
2) Hire Buttermaker.
3) Play Stanton in center, and have Buttermaker tell Judge and Bader to go all Kelly Leak after every ball they can get close to.

Can Ian Happ play right field?
gbs42
Sure, but the Cubs are attempting to contend for at least 2-3 months.
Hammerin' Hank
Make it a challenge for Stanton. Keep him in left field and put a few monuments out there like they had at the real Yankee Stadium.
CravenMoorehead
I’m wondering if he used Carlos Correa’s massage therapist at any point
GarryHarris
Corner OF isn’t the same. RF is different than LF. Some players play better in RF and some players play better in LF.
Dave Winfield was acquired while Reggie Jackson was in RF. Reggie as an As was an excellent OF; in NY, he needed that hard hat. Winfield was the better RF but Reggie had the bigger ego. Reggie in RF and Winfield in LF wasn’t the best the Yankees could be.
Giancarlo Stanton is a a good RF, perhaps better than Aaron Judge. Judge is probably the best player to move to LF to make the team the best it can be.
Superstar Prospect Wander Javier
“Giancarlo Stanton is a a good RF, perhaps better than Aaron Judge”
Stop, please just stop.

At one point, Stanton was known for his arm.
GarryHarris
You never saw Stanton in MIA?
Rsox
Giancarlo is also made of glass and the more he plays the OF the more likely he is to get hurt. Sounds like this is how Donaldson is going to get many of his AB’s while LeMahiue plays 3B
elmedius
And Judge is made of steel?
Thesecondjamie
And who are they trying to open up AB’s for in the DH spot?
YankeesBleacherCreature
It simply allows them to rest guys more frequently and give more ABs to DJL and the gawd-awful Hicks. I’m hoping Cabrera has a strong ST and makes the team leaving the Yankees to dump Hicks.

Guys the size of Judge and Stanton usually aren’t long for the outfield. They should have had at least one of them work out at 1st years ago.

What, all NY and no Scott Harris commentary here? There’s a time honored New York record at risk within his part of this article.
Detroit in 2023 might top 42 wins, or they might not.
For Love of the Game
I’ll take the over on that one. The Tigers won’t be good, but barring a repeat of catastrophic injuries, the team they field this year will be better than last year.
Motor City Beach Bum
Big surprise that the Yanks fans come out. Maybe you should join them since you don’t seem to like the Tigers much.
Here’s some Scott Harris commentary for you…he’s doing a good job so far. I like the Soto trade. Let him implode in Philly and Uceta, Wingentner or someone else will replace him. We got 3 potential contributors for a dude we can replace. If you want to be mad at someone for not signing players be made at Ilitch. Its his money, but I think most if us agree it would not have been money well spent this year. Next year on the other hand…I’ll join you in being pissed if they don’t add to the team.
In the meantime…Schoop and Meadows showed up in better shape for spring training as did Lorenzen. We have 3 new interesting ex-Phillies to check out. Cabrera is ending off a HOF career. A well liked Matt Boyd is back for another go. We have some exciting young players who hopefully bounce back or take the next step…Baddoo, Tork and Greene.
No playoffs but we CANNOT be as bad as last year. 42 wins is ridiculous dude. Be a fan.
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
I really like the looks of Greene and excited to see the steps he makes this year. I was wondering about Baez though, and heard hat he could be a trade candidate. This report seemed to suggest that he’s a player that does not thrive in a non-competitive environment. Whatever happens, I hope he can have a bounce back season.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
Rah rah, hiss, hiss.
Are you proud that guys who get paid millions of dollars, actually did what they are supposed to do in the first place?
A professional athlete shows up in shape and that is supposed to be something? Really?
I hope they do better than expected but consider this:
The minor leagues are where you determine if a guy has a good chance to play in MLB, or has that changed?
Traditionally, a team would would build up the roster, by signing and flipping established MLB players, predicting other team’s needs and targeting specific prospects. Has never happened here. The fan could follow that player in to the playoffs…that’s entertainment.
You sound like you want.them to sign a big fa name to be part of the team going g forward….how boring and typical and actually very stupid to jump into another Miggie contract as soon as they get rid of it.
I will be pissed if they sign some big name next year after going through all this stuff.
Prices for even minor.league games have skyrocketed.
I am voting with my pocketbook.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
But being a brainwashed,American.man, born in Detroit Woman’s Hospital….somehow I still think the Tigers are the most underrated team in the MLB and could actually surprise everyone and win the World Series.
Deciding on which sanitarium to price…
its.the complacency of the Kool aid drinkers that is driving me crazy. Harris nor Illich deserve a pass, any year.
Besides, they never hired me, so obviously, they have no idea what they are doing and lie to each other about what is.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
I am.sure, billionaires and.millionaires will miss.my $300 this year…lol….that is sarcasm!
Like they care…..
$300 is a lot of money to me, at least nothing to sneeze at…..
Illich and Harris would literally be laughing if they read that…that is reality and it really stinks.
The Saber-toothed Superfife

People think the Tigers didn’t have any major acquisitions during this past offseason. They did get a new plane though, so there’s that!
For Love of the Game
The plane is cheaper than last year’s free agent signings – E-Rod and Baez. At least they could sell the plane after one year and get 80% of the money back!
avenger65
Hahn is doing the best he can to hide the fact that, once again, Reinsdorf is tying his hands financially. That’s why he was unable to be competitive when it comes to signing quality major leaguers. Instead it was a parade of dfa’s and other team’s rejects. Good luck, Charlotte Knights.

Cleon Jones
G Stanton, most expensive PT DH in MLB. And the braintrust in the Bronx thinks having him butcher RF is going to help solve their OF problems? Hard to believe Yanks have gotten so old, slow, brittle, and expensive. George S is rolling over in his grave.
Maddog Jameson
Both Judge and Stanton are big men that rarely age well in baseball. Moving to left and right occasionally respectively lightens the load on their bodies. But they will breakdown and both won’t age well. Getting Judge out of center is smart to reduce wear and tear.
Poster formerly known as . . .
My gut feeling is that familiarity should prevail here, not abstract ideas based on metrics. In other words, calculating the respective speed and range of Judge and Stanton is the wrong way to approach this question.
The Yankees should know by now, after the failed experiment of Gleyber Torres at shortstop, that defense and offense are inextricably related. Difficulty in the field can, and does, affect a player at the plate. As soon as they moved Gleyber back to second base, he started hitting again.
Judge is comfortable in center and right field. He played center field in college, with a couple of games in right field and none in left field. He played only 7 games in left field in the minors and none in the majors. He has zero familiarity with left field in Yankee Stadium.
Stanton has played a little left field in each of his seasons in pinstripes except 2020, when he was strictly a DH. Left field in Yankee Stadium isn’t new territory for him, and he’s acquitted himself well playing left field. He played 32 innings in left field last year during the regular season, and he played left field in two of the four ALCS games.
Judge has enough on his mind with the captaincy and the pressures to repeat his home run barrage and live up to his massive contract. To add to all that by making him move to an unfamiliar position seems stupid to me.
If Oswaldo does well in spring training, quit overthinking this and give him the starting job in left. If he flounders (not that spring training should really count for that much, but that’s how teams persist in doing things), then see if Hicks can prove something at long last. Failing that, maybe Rafael Ortega will play out of his mind in the spring and surprise everybody by starting in left, or platooning there.
There are lots of options, and I think moving Judge to left is the worst.
brucenewton
Judge should have moved to LF the day they acquired Stanton, 6 years ago. They made the same mistake in 04 when Arod came over.
Melchez17
Tigers tanking again.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone tells reporters, including MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch, that Judge playing some left field is “on the table” for this spring.
Has Aaron Boone ever said anything that wasn’t an empty expression? Does he have a master list of empty expressions and he just grabs the next one on the list?
At the end of the day transparency has left the building.
YankeesBleacherCreature
It’s a better approach to the NY media. Joe Girardi used to always clash with reporters when he was more forthcoming. Those interviews were very uncomfortable to watch.
Motown is My Town
I’m translating this “corporate speak” Harris is using when he says “we want to play competitive baseball” to mean I have no idea what we have in these players and we’re likely going to suck this year as we give these prospects the at bats and innings to determine if they’re major leaguers or not. If he was honest by saying this he’d have more credibility with the Detroit fan base but by selling us on this BS he’s alienating the fan base and the Tigers will be lucky to draw 1M fans this year. Bottom line just be honest and tell us we’re going to suck and ask for patience instead of trying to fool us with your corporate nonsense!

I know many may see the upcoming Detroit Tiger season as a wasted year, but it is far from it. This year will determine if we are finally coming out of the seven year rebuild or if we are start another.

Translation of Hahn’s comments: “We greatly over estimated the value of our ‘prospects’ when it comes to making trades for players (mostly because the Org is far too cheap to do what it takes to win and pay for the top FAs that were available)”
TroyVan
The term “competitive baseball” usually means a team capable of 60+ wins (and not much more).
