Matt Bowman is returning to the Yankees on a minor league contract for 2023, per his MLB.com transactions log.
And maybe he’ll finally actually be able to pitch for them at some level following numerous stops and starts related to an elbow injury that was repaired via Tommy John surgery back in September 2020. The 31-year-old right-hander hasn’t appeared in any MLB-affiliated games since 2019, when he had a solid run as a member of the Reds’ bullpen.
Originally drafted by the Mets in 2012, Bowman made his MLB debut with the Cardinals in 2016 and holds a career 4.02 ERA with 149 strikeouts in 181 1/3 big league innings. When healthy, he can be an effective soft-contact-inducing reliever courtesy of an arsenal that tends to generate a lot of vertical and horizontal movement. During that 2019 stint with Cincinnati, Bowman held opposing hitters to a .212 batting average and .622 OPS with runners in scoring position. His career groundball rate sits at 56.6 percent.
He is probably going to be ticketed for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre out of Yankees camp, but Bowman can put himself in position for an in-season callup to the Bronx if his health simply cooperates.

Curly Was The Smart Stooge
I rejoice the “new” intellect we are drawing to this site.
It is reminiscent of kindergarten when all the sticky fingered kids said “me first, me first”

Being the first comment seems to be what too many on this site live for. I am sure they constantly refresh several times a day looking to be that first one. Whenever I click on a new article and don’t see any comments I always wait and return later. I view the comment section as a learning tool. I like to gauge others opinions on the topic of the article to see if I missed something somewhere. When I see a posting that says “wow” I immediately know that poster has nothing to offer and after a couple of times I just mute them. I am sure others do the same. Eventually they are only the first comment to themselves and others like them. There is so much knowledge on this site. It’s unfortunate it gets drowned out by the attention seekers.
In Seager/Hader We Trust > the 70 MM DH Ohtani
Someone has to comment first. Btw, who is this uneducated fool who can’t even spell deGrom properly?

Tee hee, look at me! Give me attention

Was good for the Cardinals for 2 years then really struggled with command. Good luck to him rule 5 selection from the Mets if I’m not mistaken?

As much as I am an obvious not-Yankees fan, I wish for the best for this dude. He was solid for us and seemed to be a great guy

What he was was grossly overused by Mike Matheny. He’s lucky his arm is still attached.

Wonder what his Bowman card looks like…

It’s a mirror.

Blue refractor numbered?

They scoffed at Clay Holmes, Lucas Luetge, Michael King, Chad Greene et. Al. too. The Yankees have a way of finding these guys…and getting them straightened out.

I think a better comparison might be with someone like Jonathan Loaisiga. A talented pitcher who couldn’t stay healthy until joining the Yankees. Sometimes they catch that bit of luck where they can stay healthy for a decent stretch and contribute. Chad Green and Michael King were decent starters in the minors who turned it up a notch by moving to the pen. The Yankees are blessed with a deep pool of decent starters in the high minors. Nobody that forecasts as a possible ace since the Montas trade but several who have the tools to shine in the pen. They are gonna need them because they will have to limit Rodon’s workload or risk having to rename the Carl Pavano Memorial MRI Tube. I am not sure why the Yankees are getting so much praise for their offseason. They should have let Judge walk so they could offer the moon to Ohtani next year. If you want to see Judge in a couple of years just look at Stanton. His contract will be a huge burden when he starts hitting the IL for lengthy stays again. It won’t be long before both spend a good chunk of the season injured. Add the always injured except in a contract year Rodon and they have the makings for future disastrous seasons. Cole will start giving up early in seasons like he did in Pittsburgh when they aren’t championship contenders and they don’t have a sparkplug like Gardner to will the team forward. Boone is Cashman’s yes man and Cashman has been lost without George. I really wish I could be a Mets fan. Not because they are acting like the Yankees of old but because they are trying to deliver for their fans. Unfortunately I have loyalty and I know my dad would roll over in his grave if a Mets cap touched my head. For now I guess I will hold out and hope Hal finally decided to sell the team to someone that will treat the Yankees like the Yankees and stop worrying about a couple extra million in taxes. Gonna call it now that Donaldson returns to form and mashes. He always does in a contract year. It will be Donaldson, Rizzo and Bader that takes them deep into the playoffs this year. Yankee fans will discover Volpe is just a lite version of Hanley Ramirez (good bat no glove) and will chastise Cashman for not trading him for pitching when his value was high. Judge, Stanton and Rodon will collectively put $50m in their bank accounts spending time injured. Nobody will miss Chapman and Britton will finally return to form somewhere else. The Rays will win the division, with the Yankees beating out the Jays for the #1 wild card because they are the only major market team that builds a roster worse than the Yankees. (Trading a middle of the order bat for a reliever is never smart.) Rizzo will be their MVP candidate because without the shift he will have a career year. Sorry about the rant. Had to get it out of my system.
Yankee Clipper
Yeah, if there’s a particular Cashman attribute that is clearly his strongest it’s building a bullpen by finding surprises like this. It’s definitely his wheelhouse.
Coffin: I thought you were pretty much right on point.

Threw 58 innings in 75 games as a righty. Interesting

I enjoyed watching him on the Cardinals, and I wondered what happened to him. His windup used to remind me of Tim Lincecum

Thought for a second this said Mark Bowman, as in Mark Bowman the Braves beat writer. Almost had a heart attack thinking he was actually going to be suiting up.
