For the final time in 2022, here’s three things we’ll be keeping an eye on around baseball throughout the day today:
1. Looking for a partner in a Grisham deal
A report yesterday suggested the Padres may be open to moving either center fielder Trent Grisham or Ha-Seong Kim. After adding Xander Bogaerts and Matt Carpenter to their already considerable corps of position player talent, and with Fernando Tatis Jr. on the way back from suspension early in the 2023 season, it’s no wonder that the Padres would at least consider dealing a player like Grisham or Kim if they could improve the big league club in other areas by doing so. While Kim would surely draw interest from infield-needy clubs, Grisham likely has more value thanks to an extra year of team control and being a quality center field option in a market devoid of options at the position. Perhaps the most obvious fit for Grisham is the Marlins, who have a deep starting rotation they’re reportedly open to dealing from. A starter such as Pablo Lopez or Trevor Rogers would allow the Padres to push either Seth Lugo or Nick Martinez into the bullpen, improving both sides of the pitching staff in doing so. From Miami’s perspective, Grisham would offer them a true Center Fielder who would free up Bryan De La Cruz and Jesus Sanchez to join Avisail Garcia, Jorge Soler, and Jon Berti in the mix in the outfield corners and at DH. Grisham would also provide a different look to pitchers as a lefty hitter in a predominantly right-handed lineup, and his bat has upside should he rediscover his 2020-21 form at the plate (111 OPS+ in 191 games). Getting more creative, one potential fit for Grisham would be the Yankees, who are known to be looking for a lefty hitting outfielder. Grisham, as a gold glove Center Fielder, should have no trouble patrolling left in Yankee Stadium, and would combine with Harrison Bader and Aaron Judge to form the likely best defensive outfield in all of baseball. While adding Grisham certainly makes sense for New York, nailing down a trade return isn’t as simple as it would be in a deal with Miami. Perhaps they could package Frankie Montas, who struggled badly after a trade to New York last season, with a member of their excess position player depth such as Gleyber Torres or Oswaldo Cabrera? These surely aren’t the only two teams who would be interested in adding a player with Grisham’s combination of talent and team control, however, leaving the possibility of a deal as something to be monitored as the calendar flips to 2023.
2. What will the Angels do with Adell?
Jo Adell was once among the most promising prospects in the game, but after three consecutive seasons of struggling in his opportunities at the major league level, he appears to be in danger of being pushed off the roster in Anaheim entirely. Taylor Ward and Hunter Renfroe are poised to start in the outfield corners on either side of Mike Trout on Opening Day 2023, and with Shohei Ohtani locking up the DH slot, it seems that Adell will be relegated to competing for fourth outfielder duties with Mickey Moniak this spring. Between this situation and the fact that Adell has already had roughly a full season’s worth of plate appearances with the Angels (557 PA), it would be understandable if the club decided a change of scenery was the best thing for both sides, particularly if the Angels could deal him to fill one of their remaining needs. While there aren’t any glaring holes remaining on the club, they could certainly benefit from adding another starter who could push Jose Suarez into a swing role, a late-inning reliever to join Carlos Estevez at the back of the bullpen, or a more surefire shortstop than their currently available options of Luis Rengifo, Gio Urshela, and David Fletcher. On the other hand, given Adell still has a minor league option remaining, it’s possible the club could be content stashing him in Triple-A as depth to protect against the injury woes that have so frequently plagued the Angels in recent years.
3. What will the Tigers do from here?
The Tigers came into the 2022 season as a trendy wild card pick, but had a deeply disappointing season that featured a brutal 66-96 record and long-term injuries to promising youngsters Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal. This left Detroit in a curious position to begin the offseason, and new president of baseball operations Scott Harris hasn’t made the club’s direction clear going forward his transactions thusfar; short-term deals for Matthew Boyd and Michael Lorenzen, and a trade of reliever Joe Jimenez to the Braves are the biggest moves out of Detroit so far this offseason. Perhaps part of the quietness on the transaction front is due to the fact that, given the under-performance of almost the entire position player corps, there’s little in the way of obvious holes in the roster outside of third base, where Jeimer Candelario was non-tendered earlier this offseason. Bringing in a bat to replace Candelario seems sensible, whether that comes through free agency, where Evan Longoria is the top option remaining, or through trade, where Joey Wendle, Eduardo Escobar, and Ramon Urias are among the names who could be available. Looking beyond the hot corner, the club could add one of the complementary outfielders still remaining on the market such as AJ Pollock or David Peralta; while they might not be surefire upgrades over the current group, they could still pitch in to raise the team’s floor. Additions to the bullpen mix to solidify the group could also make sense, though Alex Lange and Gregory Soto seems capable of handling late-inning duties. Another possible direction for the Tigers would be to sell of short-term assets such as Austin Meadows in order to improve the club’s longer-term outlook while waiting for Skubal and Mize to return to make another push toward contention.

Pirates offer Brubaker for Adell or Grisham?
solid 5th starter with upside.
JockStrap
I would assume the Padres would pass. With their rotation already full its pushing starters to the bullpen as the article stated.
Simm
The padres have stated they would be interested in a 6 man rotation. Which makes since because both Martinez and lugo would be on innings limits since neither pitched as a full time starter last year.
Of course both Martinez and lugo have incentives to be starters or relievers so I’m sure the padres are fine with either going to the pen. The problem is they both want the opportunity to start so they will at least get that in spring if not to start the season.
damascusj
Their rotation is definitely not full, lol
Clepto_
Goku, your idea is solid, except for 1 thing: king moron Andy Haines, hitting coach job retention artist.
…a useless moron who authored the WORST statistical hitting performance in the history of the Pirates, yet is still employed. We all want THAT job…
Goku the All Knowing
don’t know much about him , however the pirates goal the last few seasons has not been to win games .. they wanted to tank and see if they could catch lightning in a bottle with guys like Diego Castillo and Jack Suwinski.
2023 they are looking to start to round off the corner, and the time to evaluate performances is 2024 once most of the top prospects are up.
dvmin98
I like the idea of Grisham for Montas and Torres, but Padres need a LH bat, not another RH, so maybe Cabrera would be a better option since he’s switch. Dunno. Would have to see Grish go and rake in NY
Simm
The padres need for a lefty bat isn’t as bad as it was before they signed carpenter. If they do trade Grisham then it would create a need or possible need for a lefty bat.
Montas is pretty scary because he has tommy John written all over him.
Sherm623
Tommy John tattoos? That’s weird.
Krujo
Ok that made me laugh.
bwmiller
I don’t know if you watched Montas pitch, I’ve only seen a little of him, but he has a great delivery, and is built like a tank, he’s built like Bartolo Colon who pitched into his mid forties. Sits 96-97 with his fastball, and throws with ease,
There is no way the Yankees are trading Montas for Trent Grisham.
rocky7
Agreed, and dvin98 thinks he’s worth Torres also…..LMAO……….
The Yankees say no thanks….this guy is Joey Gallo 20 and no need to go there again!
Brew’88
The Padres really need an OF with team control, someone like Trent Grisham
Simm
They do which Grisham fits. I wonder if this is because they really want tatis to play center.
Which means if they trade Grisham they will need a corner outfielder. Of course knowing prellers love for profar perhaps they want to bring him back.
OldSaltUSNR
If Tatis trains for CF, he’ll be as good, or better than Mike Trout. He has the bat, the raw athleticism, and height to do it. What he’s currently lacking, is the desire to excel in that position. He’s committed to becoming, and believes he can be, the best MLB SS in baseball, a historic talent. That belief is tough to shake, and he may be right, too.
Potential, however, is not the same as realization. There’s still only one Mike Trout, and maybe, there’ll never be a second.
Again, back to Tatis, I’d compare his situation to Profar, to some extent. Profar was developed as a SS, had throwing issues, switched in 2B, kind of bounced around, but when he hit LF and embraced it, he really found himself as a starting ballplayer. It’ll also probably pay off for his and his family.
Tatis already has the money. He just needs to embrace the change to OF/CF, and again, I think he’d be a great one.
Brew88
At this point I don’t know if they have any alternative other than to force Tatis into OF, and after the mistakes of his ways, he probably has little leverage to argue the shift.
That said, there’s something lost here, maybe it’s just my personal feeling, but I looked forward to the prospect of him as a SS for a decade – a SS putting up 45 HR/290 BA/30 SB/170 OPS+ every year.
I think he’d calm down with the throwing errors/risk-taking, and become quite good if not GG, but obviously the Padres disagree by signing Bogaerts. His dynamic presence in the IF was special and I doubt we’ll see it again anyway, after what’s happened, so standing bored in RF is what we’ll see instead.
Joe says...
So the Yankees need to pay a premium for a guy on a down year? No thanks. If they’re going to do that, I’d rather they go after Austin Meadows. Or they could just pay money for Profar.
deweybelongsinthehall
Joe,
I was liking the deal from the Yankees perspective and thought the Padres would say no. Perhaps a three team deal is needed. What do the Padres need with Torres who is becoming more expensive? Given the tax implications, the Yankees probably would love to get talent back that costs them less. It’s for that reason I can’t see the Padres adding back so much salary.
Joe says...
I don’t think the trade works on any level. As you mentioned Torres ain’t exactly cheap and SD doesn’t really need him. The Yankees are expected to get a player on a down year while giving up a player on a down year and adding a player who is coming off a pretty good year. I don’t even know how to address the inconsistencies in this trade.
rocky7
First of all, another Yankee 2 for 1 trade……this time “throwing in” Torres for Joey Gallo 2.0……this guys good year is .250…..the Padres would probably jump as this deal because they keep Montas, go with the 6 man rotation and can flip Torres at the trade deadline for what ever they believe puts them over the top…….the Yankees reaction…..LMAO!
OnlineFeatures
No chance you think that’s a good deal from the Yankees perspective. Have you watched baseball recently ?
OnlineFeatures
Of course Pads fans like that trade idea. Cashman wouldn’t even pick up the phone with that offer. Grisham is being massively overvalued on this article
Simm
Not sure I agree that Grisham has more trade value then Kim. Yes if Grisham returned to 2020 form he would but he is coming off a poor offensive year.
Grisham does have an extra year of control and his cheaper then Kim.
Kim was the better offensive player last year and is still cheap for his production.
Both do play positions that defense has high value. So I could see them both having trade value. How much I suppose would come down to a teams need.
Kruk's Beer League
He doesn’t, but that’s who they would rather trade. I’m a Trent Grisham fan but he couldn’t hit his way out of a paper bag last year. And that is concerning for anyone considering trading for him.

Pads Fans
They missed the obvious.
Timidity was Grisham’s problem in the regular season. He just stopped swinging. He swung at 53.3% of pitches in the zone or 7% less pitches in the zone than in 2021 and that was already 5% below league average. He swung at 10% less pitches overall than the league average. He watched too many pitches go by. He was 3rd in MLB strikes looking %.
In the 1st two series of the playoffs Grisham took an aggressive approach. He swung at 72.3% of pitches in the zone. Nearly 20% more than during the regular season. The results were great. Then in the Phillies series, he reverted to an even more cautious approach at the plate swinging at 44% of pitches in the zone and went 0 for 19 with 9 strike outs.
He needs to take an approach of if its in the zone, grip it and rip it. Stop waiting for the perfect pitch to hit and swing at the one that is good. Put the ball in play and good things can happen.
The pursuit of perfection is the enemy of good. Just be good.

The Tigers should be in on Adell and in no way considering trading Meadows. His value has never been lower but he figures to bounce back this year after just an absurd string of bad luck last year. Harris is waiting out the free agency market to make some trades for pieces that no longer fit elsewhere, it seems.
Hello, Newman
Could not agree more! Load up on the change of scenery kind of players, that aggressive teams don’t have room/patience for.
Red Wings
It wasn’t bad luck, he was having some sort of mental problems and didn’t want to play. That’s why he kept getting bizarre injury after injury.
dirkg
I think a team like the Tigers would be a great fit for Adel. Fans seem to forget that his three seasons were basically his young 21-23 years; which included injury and pandemic seasons.
The Angels indeed can’t wait around for his talent to mature, but it *will* mature. Dude is a stud. Unbelievable power. Hits laser beam line drive home runs. His defense is improving every year. Not afraid to lay out and get it.
If Adel can bring the Angels a 6th starter or a serviceable SS, then it may be a win-win scenario for both clubs.

it’s a dumb idea, but unfortunately the Angels aren’t making dumb decisions right now because of the impending team sale.
HalosHeavenJJ
Zero chance Arte brings in Ozuna and I’m good with that.
GeoKaplan
Ozuna is not a player most teams would trade for. His arrival would cause local sports media to revisit the spousal abuse stories, and local activists would criticize continued employment of the man. I don’t think he’s going anywhere.
trout27
The Angels can’t use Ozuna since they traded for Renfroe play LF and Ohtani is the DH. If the Angels trade Adell it will be for a solid pen arm or a SS.

Minter for Addel ???
Maybe throw in another prospect in the Braves end ???

“Brew’88 10 hours ago
@Javia. If we all go read the Athletic article by Lin, we learn that the Padres actually did not say they were open to trading Kim and Grisham. The Lin article is pure fantasizing by Lin (in a “how do they acquire a pitcher” sort of way).
MLBTR then inexcusably gives this story legs by making it sound like the Padres publicly voiced interest in trading these guys. It generates discussion I guess, but this is not a source-based rumor, it’s pure fabrication.”
Travis’ Wood
You can’t expect these guys to do more than the bare minimum apparently. I mean there’s spelling and grammar errors in pretty much every article… this site has gone downhill fast from a few years ago and now reads like a glorified fan blog

It needs to be said cause it’s not a good look for these guys at all
AHH-Rox
Are the Padres going to play Tatis in CF? That’s the only way trading Grisham would make sense, unless they trade for another CF. Nobody else on the team now who could be a regular there.
Brew88
@ahh. The trade wouldn’t make sense even if Tati played CF, as they’re still left without a starting corner OF. Azocar is a nice late innings defensive replacement and pinch runner, but that’s about it. But fortunately there’s not actual evidence that the Padres are considering trading Grisham for a SP, it’s just a series of compounding regurgitations of a moment of wild speculation by Dennis Lin at the Athletic.
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
The article says adding Grisham to the Yankee outfield would catapult that defensive unit to the top of the league, but Toronto’s outfield defense, now with Varsho, Kiermaier, and Springer could be a notch or two better. Close call anyway. Have to crunch some numbers.
Kruk's Beer League
Yeah the Jays OF defense will be ridiculous this year.
OnlineFeatures
Definitely not. Bader, Grisham, Judge is far superior defensively than the BJays OF
damascusj
Too bad this article is just a dumb fluff piece, Lin wrote a purely speculative pipe dream article, more like a “what if we did this” but this has never once even been explored by padres
BaseballheadNY
Montas and Torres or Cabrera for Grisham? I think you’re inflating his value a bit, not to mention, I don’t think San Diego is looking to add that kind of salary in regards to Torres or clog up their infield any more than it is.
Simm
Yeah Torres would have no place to play on the padres unless they dealt Kim. I guess he could dh but unlikely they would start him over Kim or cronenworth.
tigerdoc616
Nick, you are as confused as most fans are regarding the Tigers plans. But Harris has laid out some clues. Yes, he mentioned needing a catcher, a LHH IF, a RHH OF. He also mentioned focusing on developing the Tigers young talent, especially the positional players. He also wants AB’s and IP’s for his younger players. That suggests that any player he does sign will not deprive those young players of those AB’s and IP’s. They will be more complimentary pieces that full time starters. Also suggests that any signings will not be long term signings.
Many have postulated that Harris will be more active in the trade market. He has not yet, but that may come later as he gets a better idea of the talent he has and the longer term needs of the Tigers.
That also means that 2023 will be a tough year for Tigers fans. Likely will be better because 2022 was a year where almost anything that could go wrong did. But also likely means another sub .500 season and watching playoffs from home yet again. Most Tigers fans sense this and are upset. Tired of losing they are. So Harris is not getting any sort of honeymoon from the fan base.
Jm207* 2
It’s because Al Avila sucked and Chris Illitch is a cheap owner. Still waiting on the “calculated risks” Harris spoke of.
LABeachguy
Illitch I wouldn’t say is cheap. He just handed out two long term contracts last year with Baez and E-Rod who everyone claimed at the time were both major overpays.
MotorCityJack
Those overpays those players got are because no one wants to
willingly play in Detroit unless that player is from Michigan. This Tigers team has been stuck in a never ending rebuild that will probably fail again because they have indifferent ownership.
It sucks being a Tigers fan right now.
Hello, Newman
If Illitch is a cheap owner, what’s the other third of the league that is better and spends less?
Hello, Newman
The team sucked last year. They need to solidify the core before doing anything irrational.
Red Wings
They are going to roll out Kreidler, Greene, and Tork to get ABs. New hitting coach has to be better, so maybe Meadows actually plays, Baez plays like he did the last two months, and Schoop has to be better. Boyd and Turnbull might have nice comeback seasons, and hopefully Skubal returns strong. Still looking at a .500 season, nothing exciting here.
gotigers68
I would LOVE a .500 season !

When you click on the “report” that suggests the Pads are wanting to move Grish for a SP, that other mlbtr report sensationalizes upon an article written by Dennis Lin in the Atlantic in which Lin, without any source from the Padres or anywhere else, wildly speculates that Grisham could be a trade piece for a SP.
Fantasizing is fun, but this story has no legs, and merely compounds upon bad journalism. The Pads are thin in the OF and need to add another OFer. The last thing they would do is trade Grish and leave a massive hole in their OF.
gbs42
MLB Trade RUMORS. Fantasizing and speculation is right there in the title.
Travis’ Wood
Except this isn’t a trade rumor genius… it’s pure speculation
agnes gooch
Brew ‘88: Every player on every team is available for trade technically, it depends on what the offer is. Any good president of baseball operations will listen on any player. Doesn’t mean a trade happens, sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t. It’s no big deal to speculate. Strange stuff happens all the time, if trades were predictable, we would all be geniuses and millionaires but nobody knows what is going to happen. Nobody. That’s why this is so much fun.
Brew’88
Right. There’s no story here.
Pads Fans
The problem is this is not just speculation that the Padres MIGHT be interested in trading those two guys. It tries to say that they ARE exploring trades.
The Padres have been pretty clear that they have no intention of trading Kim. It would create a huge void in the roster and the clubhouse that would be hard to fill. With the elimination of extreme shifts, having a 2B with great range and a sure glove becomes much more important than in years past and Kim is great on defense.
Moving Grisham is even more troublesome because the Padres have less depth in the OF than in the IF. Considering the Padres will have a Tatis in RF, a position that will be new to him, and Soto who is mediocre at best on defense in LF, it makes much more sense to keep the exceptional defensive player in CF.
It seems to me that it would take multiple trades to fill the holes at 2B and CF that trading these guys would create and that depth in the case of injury would become a real issue. So this rumor does not pass the common sense test.
AHH-Rox
It’s the Athletic, not the Atlantic. The Atlantic is a great magazine but not much of a source for sports news.
Brew88
thanks ahh for the correction! Yes, Athletic. Just my brain in morning mode…
AHH-Rox
When Jemele Hill left ESPN to work for the Atlantic, some confused people who couldn’t tolerate her political opinions were vowing to cancel their subscriptions to the Athletic.

I mean Jemele Hill is one of the worst journalists out there, so canceling a sub where you have to constantly read her terrible works is reasonable.
BaseballisLife
Grisham and his 83 OPS+ is more valuable than Kim? Come on MLBTR, you are better than that.
Marlins are looking for an offensive upgrade in CF. Grisham was among the worst.
CNichols
I think Kim has more value, but Grisham won a gold glove and was in the 99th percentile of outs above average last year. His defense is elite and Fangraphs is projecting him for a 106 wRC+ this year which is closer to his 103 number from 2021.
Grisham is also pre-arb so he’s cheaper and controllable for longer so that has to be factored in too with Kim owed $14M for 2 years.

If the Padres really wanted to use Grisham and Kim to upgrade their rotation (a very big “if”) and if they’re willing to continue adding salary, what about swapping both of them for Fried and Ozuna? Braves ditch a bad contract and improve at LF and SS while Padres get a near ace and a liability they can release if he fares poorly in spring training.
JoeBrady
Maybe the Angels can finally admit their mistake from three years ago, and demote Adell to AAA until he gets his K/W under 2/1. His career AAA numbers are close to 4:1. If you can’t hit AAA pitching, then you can’t hit MLB pitching.
They should maybe try to mimic the Taylor Ward development. Ward didn’t play AAA until age 24, and then repeated AAA at age 25, when he got his K/W to 101/80. He still occasionally struggles with contact issues, but the 120/60 from 2022, with plus power, is playable.
Right now, all they are doing is burning thru Adell’s service time, with the ancillary benefit of making the team worse, and undermining Adell’s confidence.
whyhayzee
My nephew was drafted the same year as Adell. He’s had two Tommy Johns, a nerve surgery, and is just recently throwing off the mound for the first time in two years. The idea that he could make it to the majors is still a pipe dream, but it would be amazing if they were teammates. I’m still pulling for Adell to figure it out, he’s a good guy and clearly super talented.
JoeBrady
You can’t figure out how to hit by facing MLB pitchers. When I use to play, I would go to the batting range using slower pitches until I got my timing down. Then I’d move to the next faster machine. It almost feels like the Angels wanted to skip all those annoying steps in-between.
Pads Fans
The Angels have gotten a lot of grief from long time sports writers for the exact opposite reason. Because they brought Adell along so slowly. They only gave him 250 AB over 68 starts in his first two seasons.
The reasoning is that young players need regular at bats, whatever the level they play at, and that Adell wasn’t playing everyday with the Angels in 2020 or 2021.
Obviously he knew how to hit. He hit .278 with an .882 OPS between AA and AAA. The talent was there.
The Angels brought him up at the beginning of the 2020 season when there was no minor leagues and still didn’t play him daily. He had only 33 starts in 60 games. Why? Who else was on the roster that should be taking at bats away from your #1 prospect? Ward had been just as bad until he started playing every day in September of 2020. Ward came into the month hitting .147 and .164 over his first two season. They just went with him every day down the stretch and we saw the results. Why not do that with Adell?
I tend to agree with the veteran sportswriters on this subject. Either leave him in the minors and bring up some kid that is not a long term solution to fill that injury hole in the lineup and take your lumps or play the talented rookie everyday once they are called up.

Why not do that with Adell?
============================
Adell had a 43/10 K/W with =-0- HRs in 121 ABs, in the PCL. In the same year that Adell had his -0- HRs, Ward had a 101/80 K/W with 27 HRs. Ward was older, but light years ahead of Adell.
bkbkbkbk
Ward was the second best hitter in baseball until he ran into the wall and then was the second best hitter in September again. I’m not sure people appreciate how good Wars might actually be with the changes.
kellin
I thought I read that Ward’s sudden improvement was due to input by Trout — or at least watching trout.. Adell cant do the same?
bkbkbkbk
He also said he was able to reduce anxiety and distraction
Tim Stewart
He had a locker next to Trout. It can’t hurt. Biggest change came when the last GM pulled him off C despite his glove (Mike Scioscia said he compares to Mathis) the thought being he would unlock his bat. He gave Josh Donaldson as an example of how he thought it would help the former 1st rounder. After that he started getting better and better and by the later part of 2021. Strangely enough, He was sent to AAA late in 21 despite him hitting close to .500 with power the week before. He never slowed down until he ran into the RF wall.
hiflew
Rockies should offer Austin Gomber for Adell. Gomber has shown flashes, but is unlikely to be a good pitcher at altitude. And he worked pretty well as a swing man last year. The open spaces at Coors just might give Adell his confidence back. Seems like a win-win
AHH-Rox
Not a bad thought, but the SP depth for the Rockies is lacking as it is. Maybe if they sign one of the remaining free agent starters Gomber would be expendable.

Can’t believe Harris would trade Meadows now. He’s in a “show me” year. His career is dependent on him showing MLB he can get it back. Like another poster said, his value is at an all time low right now.
He and ERod have got to bounce back this year. Heck, even Baez has an opt out this year. These 3 might be able to carry the Tigers to the All Star break where they can then trade them, or hope they leave at the end of the year.

My Tigers blow & apparently everyone running the team wants it that way
lesterdnightfly
“…given the under-performance of almost the entire position player corps, there’s little in the way of obvious holes in the [Tigers’] roster outside of third base…”
To me that’s a non sequitur.
Wouldn’t that team-wide under-performance create MORE holes in the roster? Odds are that most of the ’22 position players are AAAA types and won’t pan out anyways, or won’t be part of any longer term success, so why not explore new or different talent?
stymeedone
Hopefully, the belief is that it’s all on last year’s hitting coaches, now fired. I don’t buy that it all is, but when only Haase is able to work out of a season starting slump, I gotta believe it was a factor. So if most return to their 2021 numbers, that will go a long way towards determining needs for the team. Based only on last season, they need everything, and that’s just not possible. (Harris still should have kept Candelario)
The Saber-toothed Superfife
When a team like the Reds, with a payroll of under $80Mil, can just eat Mooses’$22Mil = 1/3 -1/4 of their payroll, and they don’t even trying to offset the payroll by packaging him a prospect or two, to save the bottom line. They never even batted an eye.
Mr. Ivy leaguer must think of MLB fans as pure pigeon.
When a team like the Tigers make no valid effort to field a contender for 7 years….make no effort to take advantage of situations like the Reds? Never even flinched.
The owner must think of his team’s fans as pigeons.
Thanks to MLB, a billion dollars really isn’t considered that much any more….
The GMs and owners think taking your family to see a baseball game, that will likely last under 2 1/2 hrs due to TV concerns, for $1000.00
Because, $1000.00 is very much to any of these guys.

Jo Adell is an example of why Alex Anthopoulos is willing to trade prospects for established players with multiple years of control.
Pads Fans
Same goes for Preller.
Melchez17
Why would the Padres sell extremely low on Grisham? He’s a lefty hitting gold glove cf who is controlled for years.
Why would they trade Kim? Solid glove and decent offense from SS and now moved to 2b. He would be a solid defensive replacement on days Bogaerts takes off or dhs.
Do the Padres have a specific need they have to fill? They could use a number 6 starter or a middle reliever. That wouldn’t cost a player like Kim of Grisham. Silly article.
Angels shouldn’t give up on Adel. Send him to AAA and see how he does later. Silly article
Tigers “little in the way of holes in offense”? What? They have no 3b. A backup catcher. One outfielder who is average (Greene). A 2b who was the worst hitter in all of baseball. The worst hitting dh in the game. A 1b who struggled at AAA and showed it in the majors. Silly article
Brew88
@ Melche. Yes, really silly wild speculation by Dennis Lin, regurgitated 2 times in 12 hours by mlbtr and mlb.com as a story. The Pads do need another SP, but they have plenty of guys who can potentially fill the #5/#6 role in the rotation: Martinez, Lugo, Morejon, etc.. They don’t need another SP of that caliber as much as they need a SP in the #1-#3 category (to help them win in the playoffs). No FAs left in that category, but maybe they can find such a pitcher via trade market. The market would be better though at trade deadline mid-season, and that’s when they will likely make a move.
They could benefit now from adding another lesser SP to add depth to a thin rotation, but there hasn’t been citable source to the rumor the Pads are willing to part with Grisham to get one. In fact, there are numerous interviews/statements from AJP stating they need to add another OF, not get rid of one. At present they only have 2 ML-quality outfielders on opening day: Soto and Grisham. They will probably put AAAA Azocar in corner OF spot until Tatis returns. I hope they’re not counting on Tatis to anchor an OF spot rest of season, given his recent history.
To part with Grisham now would be nonsensical. But that somehow didn’t stop Athletic writer Dennis Lin to speculate on such a departure. And so we see the speculation regurgitated over and over by mlbtr and mlb.com, when it’s a non-story originating from ignorance.
REBB248
I’m not asking Harris go out and spend $200mm on aging FA’s. But, at least field a ML quality roster.
roob
It seems like the Angels have to keep Adell. They have no other 4th or 5th OFer. No, Moniak doesn’t count for anything.
They should sign Michael Wacha or similar as a 6th starter and to deepen their pen. Their pitching could be pretty good this year and with a return to form by Rendon, their offense,as well.
I’m not an Angels fan but I sure would love to see the team that has the Two Most Interesting players in baseball have some success!

How much worse is Grisham than Varsho both in terms of upside and current production. Keep in mind Varsho only has 1 “good” year with the bat and Grisham plays CF to Varsho’s mostly corner OF. Both are glove first OF.
What I am trying to say is, wouldnt it have been better to have traded much less for Grisham and kept Moreno and Gurriel? I dont know what it would take to get Grisham, maybe just Jansen +?
JoeBrady
How about Verdugo for Grisham? I think Verdugo is a little bit better, and maybe a higher ceiling, but the RS would get more control with Grisham.
From the SD perspective, Verdugo is almost a perfect fit since it allows Tatis to go to CF, and Soto to stay in RF.
Pads Fans
In what way is Verdugo better?
Verdugo is a slightly above average corner OF on defense that has a below league average 1.8 WAR over the last 3 seasons.
Grisham is arguably the best defensive CF in the game and has an above average 2.8 WAR over the last 3 seasons.
Grisham has been 36% better than Verdugo.
RetroBeers
Hard pass on a Grisham for Montas and Torres/Cabrera deal as a Yankee fan. A crazy overpay for a player that slashed a spectacularly feeble .184/.284/.341 over a full season in 2022. I wouldn’t give up either Montas or Torres straight up for him. Yanks already have a big glove no bat OF in Estevan Florial on the roster if they want to go that route.
OnlineFeatures
There’s a 0 percent chance the Yankees would even consider that. This writer on the good stuff thinking that is a realistic proposal
Angels & NL West
By all accounts, Adell is coachable, a hard worker and well-liked in the clubhouse. I’m rooting for him as are most all Angels fans. That said, Adell is a phenomenal athlete that is lacking in baseball skills. No amount of time in AAA, or anywhere else, is going to appreciably change that. I’m guessing baseball ops people around the league are on to this fact by now. More importantly, the Angels should have known this 3+ years ago and traded him at peak value.
bhambrave
I thought coachable meant that he can be taught skills, but you say he can’t. I’m confused.
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
Check this piece out:
bleacherreport.com/articles/10059863-low-risk-high…
JoeBrady
That article doesn’t really list any reasons for trading for Adell. It basically said he was big and fast. And “low-risk” remains undefined if you don’t know what you need to give up for acquire him.
stymeedone
I’m guessing Adell is running out of options. I’m sure the Angels don’t want to risk losing him on waivers.
Big whiffa
Reds need another outfielder doubt they’ll give up much for adell at this point. Maybe a headliner in the 15 prospect range.
Tampa might be the right fit for him though. If he’s teachable they obviously have quality player development
Pads Fans
Coachable means he can be taught skills. Adell hit well in AA and AAA. So the problem is not there.
JoeBrady
It is. Even in his last go-around in AA, he had a 56/20 K/W, in 155 ABs. That equates to 217 Ks in 600 ABs. What does 217 Ks in AAA equate to in the pros? 250? More?

Austin Meadows is a bounce back candidate who could play all 3 OF positions in San Diego.
The Tigers would get more for him after he proves he is healthy and producing again.
And one of the Tigers young starters could fetch multiple young position players/prospects
(Manning?).
stymeedone
Meadows is not much of a defensive OF, and please don’t suggest the Tigers tear down and start over. Us fans have waited long enough.
quantomoffandom
Unfortunately, this year will be the year we see how bad or good Al’s rebuild efforts went. If bad, as most believe, then the second rebuild will began. This will take at least 3 years. By 2027 we should see the fruits of the second rebuild. It is not going to be a good time to be a Tiger fan.
chrisinvirginia
Jo Adell would be a nice flyer for the Nationals, who are in full rebuild and do need a bat in the outfield right now. A good low risk/high reward move.
CenterWingPolitics
Braves would really be good partners for Meadows or Adell.
Arms like Elder, Anderson, Shuster etc should be good to build a package around.

“Scott Harris hasn’t made the club’s direction clear going forward his transactions thusfar.” Nicky Two Strikes, wth?
REBB248
New GM, same ol’ Tigers. Trying to scrape the bottom of the barrel, hoping to find anything of substance. Again the owner, Chris Ilitch, claiming poverty b’cuz the team is stuck paying Miguel Cabrera’s $30mm salary. Even with Cabrera’s contract, the Tigers team payroll remains one of the lowest in MLB. Tigers have needs at C, 1B, 3B, SS and RF. As it stands now, Tigers are headed towards another 100+ loss season, in 2023. Please, Chris, just sell the team!
stymeedone
Illitch has NEVER claimed poverty, or said Cabrera’s contract had any impact. Last year was so beset by injuries, and unexpected down years, it’s hard to know what really needs fixing.
Pads Fans
The Tigers had an insane amount of pitching injuries and many of those will carry over into 2023. I am not sure what Tiger’s fans want them to do.
Mize and Skubal will miss all of 2023. Turnbull missed all of 2022
Brassroo
Not quite the same ole Tigers. Harris has clearly made an effort to strengthen his AAA club. Toledo should be pretty decent this year and will allow Harris to assess his future roster. He has very little in tradeable assets. So many injured pitchers and positional vets coming off of career lows. Give him until the trade deadline to see how he does.
REBB248
That’s great news for the Mudhens! Not so much for their ML affiliate.
stymeedone
You have a valid point on Harris not having many tradable assets, but strengthening Toledo should be a byproduct of strengthening the Team in Detroit. That really hasn’t happened. He released the bench, and the starting 3B. He hasn’t replaced any of those players with improvements. The starting lineup is the same, with Rogers replacing Barnhart. Kreidler looks like he will get the opportunity to replace Candelario, but Zack Short making the team doesn’t make it better than last years. Other than trading Jimenez for what appears to be a legit prospect, Harris has been very unimpressive.
Hello, Newman
They are 17th in payroll, & the 5th worst team. You’re a fan of the wrong team; shoot you’re in the wrong division, if you think they’re going to spend more than the Ny’s, La’s, and Tx’s. They need to follow the Cardinals model. They need brain power, hopefully Scott Harris is the guy.
Jubilation
Here is the deal with the Tigers. When Harris as hired I never thought this was going to be an HR active offseason in Detroit.
This was always going to be an offseason if getting his people in place. The Tigers next offseason I suspect will be an active one.
Why?
1) If Baez and Erod opt out after the season the only money committed on the books will be Miggy $8 minion buyout. Everyone else will be arb or in the pre arb salaries.
2) You will have answers to how Turnbull, Jake Rogers, Skubal and Meadows came back from injuries (and a good idea on Mize).
3) Did Torkelson and Baddoo rebound from bad offensive years to establish themselves as starters going forward?
4) Are Erod and Baez opting out? Worth bringing back if they do?
5) Riley Greene take another step in his MLB development?
6) on the minor league level did: Wentz,Parker Meadows, Reese Olson, Wilmer Flores, Jung, Dingler, Crouch etc. Continue their development?
It is not just having money but an idea what to do with it.
Hello, Newman
I would like to see them extend some of the younger players, nothing over 6 years though.

Why would the Angels push Suarez to the pen for inferior free agent or trade for an equivalent pitcher (while have 2-5 MiLB starters that could be called up) and lose Adell as an asset?
Troutahni
Especially when Suarez improved during the season when facing batters a third time through the lineup.
Troutahni
Frankie Montas and Gleyber Torres or Oswaldo Cabrera for Trent Grisham?
Why would the Yankees be so stupid to do that deal. What are you smoking?
Let’s see the Yankees should trade for a Grisham in order to create 3 holes, which includes a very solid starting pitcher.
Dude? Frankie Montas is no throw-in!
The Yankees possibly need a Leftfielder currently. I don’t see much difference between Bader and Grisham, except Bader is a better more complete ball player.
Are you writing clickbbait articles in MLBTR?
RetroBeers
Yes another offensive black hole is just what the doctor ordered for the Yankee lineup. Grisham is a massive K machine who was Gallo level terrible in 2022.
OnlineFeatures
Exactly. How is this guy a writer here posting ideas like that? One of the more laughable proposals I’ve seen out of MLBTR lately
stymeedone
I thought the same. Cabrera had a better year and has more control than Grisham. He plays everywhere. I wouldn’t trade him straight up for Grisham.
nosake
The Angels squandered Jo Adell’s talents. No wonder he seemed adrift. Given the right team, he would shine.
Hello, Newman
Maybe he just sucks? It’s not like he is not around world class talent. But just like you, I’m not writing him off just yet.
OnlineFeatures
Might be the dumbest proposal I’ve ever seen. You think the Yankees would give up Montas (who they traded a nice prospect package for) and Gleyber or Cabrera?!?! For Grisham who is horrible offensively?
LMFAO
Rsox
The Angels have done just about all the damage they can do to Adell, trade him to a team that may be able to fix him. Granted his value is pretty low but at this point the Angels could use the lottery ticket more.
The Padres would be foolish to trade Grisham without first seeing how Tatis handles CF (if that is the plan) as is they don’t have a capable backup if Tatis gets hurt playing any OF spot unless they want Azocar getting regular AB’s
wileycoyote56
Tigers will be better in 23 with just the same returning club! They have to play better next year, because they were horrible in 22, just law of averages says they’ll improve. If not there’s going to be a lot of call ups
bitterpadresfan
Trading your only center fielder and putting all your faith in Tatis a) not doing something stupid b) staying healthy and c) learning to play the outfield is not a good idea. He was awful in right field for the few games he played. Grisham is the exact player the Padres need. Get Cueto or Watcha and lets go.
chrisinvirginia
they should frankly think about trading Tatis, to be honest.
BaseballisLife
Not sure your reasoning behind that. Tatis is a 6+ WAR player and probably will be for a decade.
bhambrave
6+ WAR over 10 years isn’t very good.
SportsFan0000
Grisham’s BA was terrible last year.
Padres could use another couple of OFs.
SportsFan0000
Tatis Jr could play CF. LF or RF.
If Manny Machado ‘opts out” after 2023,
then the Padres INF gets shuffled, again.
Tatis or Boegarts to 3b?!
stymeedone
Padres players at spring training: What position am I playing this year?
Ron Hayes
Adell needs to play everyday in the minors until he has to be called up. Let the kid play!
TuckSD
Pads biggest need is a back end rotation piece. We owe it to Martinez to give him a shot as a 5th starter but Lugo almost guaranteed relegated to pen. Maybe they go 6 starters for half the season like last year.
Grisham’s value hinges on his Gold Glove and potential at the plate he showed in playoffs. Still prob feels overvalued in this article because he was terrible last year in regular season. For Kim, I doubt he even on any teams radar. Still adjusting to MLB and I think for his own sake he needs to stay with Pads to allow a supportive development.
Hopefully Pads just sign Cueto as a stop gap and get a big name next offseason.
