The Reds announced this evening they’ve inked reliever Silvino Bracho to a minor league contract with an invitation to big league Spring Training. The 30-year-old was available after being non-tendered by the Braves.
Bracho has appeared in parts of six big league campaigns. He debuted back in 2015, when he allowed only two runs with a 17:4 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 12 2/3 innings for the Diamondbacks. Bracho couldn’t sustain that early success over a full season, with home run issues leading to an ERA north of 5.00 in each of the next two years. He rebounded to post a 3.19 ERA with a solid 26.4% strikeout rate across 31 innings in 2018, but his career was then thrown off track by injury. He required Tommy John surgery that limited him to one combined appearance between 2019-20, leading the Snakes to cut him loose.
The Venezuela native didn’t appear in the majors in 2021, but he earned his way back briefly this year. Signed to a minor league deal with the Red Sox over the offseason, he tossed 31 1/3 frames of 3.16 ERA ball in Triple-A. Boston promoted him to the majors but designated him for assignment without getting him into a game. He was dealt to the Braves for cash and spent most of the season with their top affiliate in Gwinnett, but he made three MLB appearances with Atlanta. Bracho allowed three runs in 4 1/3 innings in what marked his most extensive major league action since 2018.
Despite the lack of recent big league work, Bracho makes for a decent depth signee. He’s coming off an excellent 2.67 ERA across 57 1/3 innings between the Red Sox’s and Braves’ top affiliates. Bracho punched out an excellent 30.4% of batters faced in Triple-A with only a 4.3% walk percentage.
Cincinnati has a fair bit of opportunity available in the middle innings. The Reds finished 28th in the majors with a 4.72 bullpen ERA in 2022. Alexis Díaz, Lucas Sims, Tejay Antone and Buck Farmer look to have jobs secured. The middle relief corps is less settled, with out-of-options Ian Gibaut competing with pitchers like Tony Santillan, Fernando Cruz and Joel Kuhnel for roles.

If his name was Silvio Bracco, then that could be his fate.

Out of the playoff race prior to May 1st. Many trades made at the deadline. At that point nothing to do but develop an off-season game plan and get a jump on the competition for low level players, that they can afford. If this is all they can afford, and this is their game plan, you can start working on next off season’s game plan prior to April 1st.
Hopefully they kept the covid cut out fans. They’re going to need them again.

Brancho was good in AAA in 2022, which is not surprising as he is a AAA player. So he gets a few innings in the MLB. There are several hundred players similar to him playing in AAA.

Multiply a minimum of 20 stupid comments for each player signed and you have MLBTradeRumors where low IQ ‘fans’ come to comment. Lol

Sell the team and move to Nashville more like it

Stupid comment. You do understand Cincinnati is home of the FIRST pro baseball team, home of the true opening day parade. MLB would never allow it. Maybe, just maybe, you reign in these assine payrolls, like every other pro sport does, and then lets see what happens. But if you want to keep harping an uneducated narrative, feel free.
And No, I am NOT a Reds fan.

Clepto – the ignorant comments will never stop on this site! The average IQ is just above idiot level here. Your choices are mute the idiots, or simply do read them…..muting is way easier….
This one belongs to the Reds
Just what they need, a guy with homer issues at that ballpark.
I just shake my head at some of the pitchers they get in a hitter friendly ballpark.

Minor league deal, folks. Minor news.

Nice to see Cincy get in on the fun.

I’ve ordered my world series tickets. Our top hitter last year is a free agent. Our 3rd best hitter and top shortstop last season was traded for a minor league pitcher. And we’ve signed a backup catcher and acquired 3 other minor league pitchers. All of the other teams can just quit now. It’s in the bag for Cincinnati

Yawn.
Joe It All
As a Reds fan it gets so tiresome seeing other Reds fans complain about their lack of inactivity and whine over minor moves. The Reds future core is residing in Chattanooga and Louisville this year with a handful of core pieces already on the big league club. The Reds have a chance at being really good in 2024 and 2025 if De La Cruz and Marte among others can make the jump and make an impact. They won’t have any money on the books after next year and will be able to start bringing in some impact players. Have some patience and it’s going to be a lot better in the near future.

The Reds when at there best will get beat in the first round 3 years in a row then a complete tear down again.
Larry Brown's crank
agree with Joe. takes patience to be a Reds fan

Joe It All – “fans complain about their lack of inactivity and whine over minor moves”
TOTALLY AGREE…..X 30 teams
This one belongs to the Reds
Problem is with small market teams there are a lot of ifs and fans have to be patient because they are not one of the eight or so teams which have an advantage over the rest where they can spend lots of bucks. All they hear is the eight or so teams spending big money and that is all the off-season news.
If the small market fans are lucky, they will have a 3-4 year window when the farm system produces enough to put in some playoff appearances. If not, they are rebuilding yet again for a few years.
Large market fans don’t get that and never will. They just poo poo the comments of fans of the 20 or so other teams pointing all this out.
MLB-1971
This one belongs – You are exactly correct that around 20 of the 30 teams every year stand very little chance of winning a World Series. There is no salary cap, and the rich teams usually buy the best players and win the World Series. Small market fans have to really love the game and not mind that their team does not win. Sixteen teams have won 2 World Series or less in their entire existence, 3 have won 1, and 6 have NEVER won.
Every year there is massive turnover in AAA rosters as minor league free agents look for the best fit to spend time in the MLB. The Worcester Red Sox had 72 players on their roster in 2022 (10 were MLB rehab). Boston had 58 players, since the roster is 26, 42 players moved up or down between the MLB and AAA (including rehabs). Does that mean every AAA player moving up for a few days or weeks needs a ‘dumpster dive’, ‘trash’, ‘garbage’ player comment. They make approximately $3900 PER DAY in the MLB (they make the US average household income for the year in two weeks in the MLB), and you can add that these up/down players are elite as only about 5% of pro players every play even one game in the MLB.
Many commentators on MLBTradeRumor share interesting, well thought perspectives.
…but I admit I get a little annoyed with comments that are highly negative while showing zero thought.
This one belongs to the Reds
I get it…just as I get annoyed when I see “they don’t spend money” without considering the reasons behind that as if every team has the same income. Of course they all come from large market or who I call “coastal boys” which really irked one of them.
jimij
Patience is what it takes to be a Reds fan, patience for over 20 yrs since 1990, bad moves/trades have been common with all ownership, this year they traded away some players that were developing, to keep butts in the seats they need to have a fun team,it’s a two edged sword, they need money but this team won’t bring in money
bwmiller
that K/BB ratio plays, 11.2 K/9, he’s working in the zone and racking K’s, could be just what the Reds bullpen needs
Tiger22matt
30 or over check, zero upside double check yep he’s the type of player the Reds target.
burrow2chase
For the situation that the Reds are in, this is a signing that they should make. Is Bracho going to set the world on fire in the MLB, I don’t think so. But he gives you someone with a solid track record at AAA that could help in a mid-relief role for the big league club. This is a move you don’t hate, but you don’t love either. This is just where this ball club is right now, whether we as diehard Reds fans like it or not.
