The Orioles are drawing interest from other clubs in shortstop Jorge Mateo, reports Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic. The specific teams in contact with Baltimore aren’t clear, although he’s a natural fallback target for clubs that haven’t addressed the position via free agency.
A former top prospect in the Yankees and Oakland farm systems, Mateo at times can be undone by an overaggressive approach at the plate. He’s walked in fewer than 5% of his MLB plate appearances while striking out nearly 28% of the time, leading to a dismal .271 career on-base percentage. Things were even more extreme this past season, as his .267 OBP topped only that of Jonathan Schoop and Cody Bellinger among hitters with 500+ plate appearances.
While Mateo doesn’t have an especially well-rounded skillset, he tapped into the physical gifts that made him a high-end prospect this year. After bouncing from the A’s to the Padres, the 27-year-old landed in Baltimore late in 2021 via waiver claim. He got his first everyday run at the major league level this past season. Mateo’s plate discipline profile was ghastly, but he demonstrated his top-tier athleticism. He stole an AL-best 35 bases in 44 attempts, showcasing the speed that garnered top-of-the-scale grades when he was a prospect.
As Rosenthal points out, that kind of athleticism could be particularly appealing in light of the rules changes going into effect for the 2023 season. MLB is instituting a limit on the number of times a pitcher can step off the mound in a plate appearance and enlarging the bases, both of which should at least moderately incentivize base-stealing.
The league is also instituting limitations on defensive shifting, requiring clubs to keep two infielders on either side of the second base bag and four players on the infield dirt. Teams could place more of a premium on athletic defenders as a result, since it’ll be more difficult to compensate for players who have below-average range via strategic positioning.
Mateo thrived defensively this year, posting top-tier marks in over 1250 innings at shortstop. Defensive Runs Saved pegged him as 14 runs above average at the position, the third-highest mark in MLB. Statcast estimated Mateo at eight runs above par, tying him for fourth among shortstops. He showcased both high-end range and above-average arm strength and looks to have emerged as a plus defender.
Maintaining that kind of defensive production will be critical for Mateo unless he takes a significant step forward in his offensive development. This year’s .211/.267/.379 line was 18 percentage points worse than average, by measure of wRC+. His baserunning means he’s not completely a glove-only player, but he’ll need to sustain high-end defensive marks to remain valuable with such tepid output at the plate. That Mateo is attracting interest from other teams in spite of his offense is a testament both to his secondary skills and the scarcity of alternatives.
The star-studded free agent shortstop class was one of the stories of the offseason. All four of the top players — Carlos Correa, Trea Turner, Xander Bogaerts and Dansby Swanson — ended up changing teams. That somewhat surprising amount of shuffling leads to the Twins, Dodgers, Red Sox and Braves having to identify new solutions to replace their outgoing stars.
All four clubs have some internal possibilities, but none are ideal situations. Minnesota acquired Kyle Farmer from the Reds as a stopgap option, while Royce Lewis is expected back midseason after his tearing the ACL in his right knee for a second straight year. The Dodgers can move Gavin Lux from second base to shortstop while relying on some combination of Max Muncy, Chris Taylor and prospects like Jacob Amaya or Miguel Vargas at the keystone. Lux is a former top prospect coming off a productive .276/.346/.399 showing, but his below-average arm strength could be a concern on the left side of the infield.
Boston has a somewhat similar situation, with Trevor Story currently likely to move back to shortstop from second base. The longtime Rockie was a plus defender at shortstop for a while, but he also has a below-average arm at this stage of his career. The Sox don’t have as strong a collection of internal second base options as L.A. does, with Christian Arroyo looking to be the favorite for playing time if Enrique Hernández stays in center field. The Braves have utilityman Orlando Arcia and rookie Vaughn Grissom — who has played 63 career games above High-A and comes with defensive question marks from prospect evaluators — as their internal candidates.
It’s sensible all four teams could explore the market for shortstop help, and clubs like the Angels and Diamondbacks could check in as well. Free agency is largely picked through at this point, with Elvis Andrus standing out as the top option remaining. José Iglesias offers a high-contact depth option and Andrelton Simmons is still an excellent defender, but neither profiles as a regular for a hopeful contender.
Trade possibilities also seems sparse. The Guardians could perhaps listen to offers on Amed Rosario for his final season of arbitration control. There’s been no indication this offseason they’re planning to do so, however. The Brewers are reportedly informing teams they’re not dealing Willy Adames; the same is true of the White Sox with Tim Anderson. Players like Nick Ahmed or Nicky Lopez could be dealt, but they’re defense-only types who’d be below-average everyday players for a win-now team.
Mateo is projected by MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz for a $1.8MM salary during his first season of arbitration eligibility. He’ll go through the process twice more before hitting the open market after the 2025 campaign. That extended window of control means the Orioles don’t have to deal him, and there’s no indication they’re actively shopping him. Baltimore’s rebuild is in the rearview mirror, and Mateo’s modest arbitration salary isn’t placing any financial pressure on the organization.
There’s logic for general manager Mike Elias and his staff to entertain trade offers, though, particularly if they’re wary of Mateo’s ability to maintain his 2022 pace with the glove. The lack of other options for teams desperate for shortstop help could increase their sense of urgency to pursue him, while Baltimore has a number of prospects they hope will eventually unseat him as the franchise shortstop.
Gunnar Henderson debuted at the end of the season, primarily working at third base in deference to Mateo. The O’s could roll with a left side infield of Mateo and Henderson while having Ramón Urías and the recently-signed Adam Frazier share reps at second base. Baltimore has highly-regarded prospects Jordan Westburg and Joey Ortiz just behind that group, with both players coming off quality seasons for Triple-A Norfolk. Westburg and Ortiz — the latter of whom is already on the 40-man roster — could each find themselves in the majors fairly early in the 2023 campaign, and both are regarded by various prospect evaluators as potential everyday shortstops.
BStrowman
He’s not going anywhere. Joey Ortiz has surpassed Westburg as the next in line IMO.
He has a real glove and really hit last year. If he keeps hitting that’s a real SS. At that point in time—we may actually float Mateo.
RobM
…or, Mateo can’t hit at all, and his defensive metrics will regress in 2023. They should listen to offers, but if they don’t get offers with much of a return, he probably is worth holding him for now.
JockStrap
Agreed!!! The only real value he brings is that he can steal a base when/if he gets on base.
RedFraggle
And his defense.
ARC 2
i find this as one of those made up rumors. Mateo is a guy barely hanging on to a roster position. It would take much to get him.
brooke9805
His other value that was very important last year He’s a spark plug. You stretch a singles in the doubles doubles in the triples he fires up the rest of the guys. I wouldn’t just give him away. He had a period where he was hitting the ball very well then he got hurt and he never got a swing back. Don’t be surprised if he is in a 250 hitter next year 15 or so home runs and 35 to 40 stolen bases with some team.
Jaysfan1981
They should probably jump on any decent trade proposal. Isn’t Gunnar a SS too?
Mateo looks like an all glove no stick kinda guy who’ll be in MLB forever but never hit
Just a Jays fans opinion
BStrowman
Great glove & ++ speed is the floor of a major league starting SS though.
He may never get past that but it’s really not hard to imagine him doing so. I have no idea why he isn’t an all pro bunter. He adds that to the toolbox and you’re just getting better.
It’d be great if he’d cut the swing down and go for a contact oriented approach also but that’s a big ask.
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
After seeing those batting metrics, I wouldn’t touch Mateo with a ten-foot pole. He makes Elvis Andrus look like a tantalizing alternative in comparison.
JockStrap
“Mateo looks like an all glove no stick kinda guy who’ll be in MLB forever but never hit”
No female will love this assessment.
fre5hwind
Technically they could use Ramon Urias to.
ClevelandSteelEngines
Seems like other teams are asking. Or it could be a nice sell-high opportunity for the Orioles. Mateo’s defense is just that good. I’d be surprised if Boston wasn’t involved; any way they can keep Story at 2B should be right.
Why the Orioles should hold on to him? First, his defense is great and so is the baserunning. If he had any semblance of patience he could do some fantastic damage with an average OBP. The Orioles also need him to bridge the period before Holliday is ready to take over at shortstop, an event likely to happen in the following season.
fre5hwind
He can not hit for the life of him.
LordD99
Not sure I see Boston and Baltimore trading.

They have before: just to name a few

Red Sox Received : RHP Mike Boddicker

Boston Received: Eduardo Rodriguez
Boston Received: Andrew Cashner
Orioles Received: 2 Minor Leaguers

The last 2 deals anyway—Boston and BAL had different strategies.
Baltimore and Boston both want to be competitive next year and build up the pipeline. I don’t know that we really line up with that in mind.

Wait! What? Orioles fans assured us all on here that they didn’t want Correa because they had Mateo.
C Yards Jeff
@websoulsurfer; guilty but with logic … and honestly, probably flawed logic but here goes:
Os are looking at 24 not 23 as beginning of competitive year in year out run. Keep Mateo around one more year. Pretty sure he’s working on his O this off season. D is there; O is not. See what happens. Guys like Ortiz and Holiday and Westburg are coming. Options baby, options. Henderson? What’s his position? HITTER! Chase Utley with power.
Ra
pfft, Gunnar is a SS. Utley was just a 2B,
C Yards Jeff
Gunnar is a hitter who can play all 4 infield positions well. Utley was a hitter who played 2b.
RedFraggle
No, I think they wanted him. But not for 90 years and a billion dollars. We also have several high tier SS prospects that make it not super worth it.
RedFraggle
Mateo is the Billy Hamilton of the SS position.
BStrowman
@Red
Mateo can hit the ball with authority though. Hamilton didn’t have any power. I have no idea if Mateo could ever be turned into a league average hitter but if he cleaned up his plate discipline—there’s a real chance.
Easier said than done .
Ra
In other words, Shortstop Mateo is nothing like Billy CF Hamilton.
King Floch
And Gunnar.
And Ortiz.
And Holliday.
Ra
No, Orioles fans didn’t want to commit to a declining Correa who will be moved off of SS in a year or two. They have Gunnar for SS if Mateo is traded or is moved to Cf should Mullins be traded.
You really can’t lump all fans into one homogenous mindset in any case.
C Yards Jeff
@Ra; Good morning. Yep, Gunnar is special. Agreed, for now, slides in to SS if Mateo is traded off season. Seems to have a great attitude as well. IE willingness to move around the infield if FO deems so. Hitter wants to hit. “Put me in coach!”
In regards to Mullins, hoping FO is seeing him as untouchable. Extend him long term now, please … pretty please.
Troutahni
Mateo did have some big games last season with the long ball. He’s actually an unreliable hitter in the clutch with runners in scoring position. He hit 13 long balls, but he doesn’t hit them too often with runners in scoring position or on base. If he could improve his situational hitting, I could see him raise his batting average to. 240. I remember the Orioles had a difficult time last season with the big inning, meaning there weren’t too many extended innings where the lineup would go around again. Mateo batting ninth hurt their chances to get the lineup back to Cedric Mullins at leadoff. The Orioles should take Mullins out of the leadoff spot and hit him down the order where they can utilize his speed to help extend innings. I remember them moving him down the order late in the season when they would face a lefty or they would bench him and use him as a pinch hitter to get him back in the game. Gunnar would make a good nine hitter for the time being for the Os.
ClevelandSteelEngines
Tough to hit ’em with runners when he’s behind Chirinos et al. I’m just grateful there’s some pop.
I agree with Mullins further down the lineup, as they tried late, as the correct move. He had a split and could be platooned. The move down the lineup could offset some of the pressure against LHP.
C Yards Jeff
Keep Mullins at leadoff. He’s a table setter. He’ll have plenty of opportunity to drive in runs if they hopefully bat Frazier in the nine hole.
O'sSayCanYouSee
He was just off the Orioles first 30/30 season ever. I think top of the order is the only place for him. If Mullins doesn’t lead-off, idk who would. Next season with new rules favor basestealers even more, which, imo, only increases the argument for him to leadoff.
(Really like Adley batting 2nd, too. Best “eye” on the squad for sure)
Troutahni
Great point.
Ra
You never bat your best hitter 9th. That’s insane! Gunnar is 2 hole or 3.
Benjamin101677
With the routine of normal defense and no shifting a defensive first shortstop should have a place in the game again. Also with the designated hitter a lot easier to work around a lower end batter.
I love baseball and defensive. Not a Mets fan but used to use to watch Rey Ordonez highlights when he was their defensive premium shortstop. Hope see those type of players again
.
Where is Simba going to sign? Back to Atlanta?
Benjamin101677
Nope Atlanta is going to either either Vaughn Grissom or Orlando Arcia as their shortstop. Don’t see the need or room for andelton Simmons
.
Simba to Japan?
solaris602
Only if he wants to play for the love of the game. Simmons is a faint shadow of his former self.
Troutahni
Simba let down the Angels. With 2 weeks remaining of the 2020 shortened season he decided to not play anymore games in MLB’S version of the bubble because of concerns of giving Coburn to the rest of his family. The Angels had a mathematical chance to make the wild card when he made that fateful decision. It’s the only season Rendon looked like a good signing for the Angels.
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
Atlanta should try to put together a package for Ha-Seong Kim. It’s a shame he can’t play his best position in San Diego, maybe this could give him the chance.
Dusty Baker's tooth pick.

I think a lot of teams reach out and discuss things so they know asking prices and what could be available. Don’t think all those July trades were done without putting out off season feelers etc.
Very famous story about the Yankees contacting the Indians as a feeler call not realizing David justice was available. That phone call worked out good for the Yankees for a short term while

Really a ghastly contact profile? A tepid plate output? MLB rosters are filled with players who can’t make anything close to consistent contact. Many are highly sought after players. Mateo is adequate at the plate and better in the field. Ghastly writing in this segment though. Franco would have to improve to reach tepid.
Jimbo_Jones
Saw him with the Pads mostly as a pinch runner/hitter. He’s very fast, with the larger bases and pitch out limits he might have a chance to be useful as a utility infielder. Maybe he finds his stride not likely…
BashBroJoe
Last two months of the season Mateo took wayyyy better at bats and had some huge games at the plate. Although frustrating at times he’s definitely a guy you have to watch everyday to appreciate. He’s a very good ballplayer. I’m more than fine with the Orioles giving him another look.
Ra
Actually, Mateo hit very well in July and August, He reverted to freeswinging form in September and his offensive production suffered.
Happyfoolsteve
Mateo’s speed is electric and his defense at SS was phenomenal in 2022. He definitely helped make baseball fun to watch again in Baltimore. That being said, I think they need to sell high abd see what they can get for him. Henderson can take over at SS, Urias stays at 3B, and Frazier plays 2B, possibly platooning with Westburg or Ortiz. The O’s have enough infield options to move guys around if they want. If Mateo can be packaged and bring back more pitching, I think the O’s need to do it.
Jfoster4913
Bingo
GarryHarris
The O’s were my favorite team last season. For a guy who can’t hit, he changes the game and sets a whole exciting tone for the team. I realize the O’s need to make room for Gun…, their team dynamics will change when they trade him.

For Red Sox please! Oriole fan – what would you want in exchange from the Red Sox, realistically?
JockStrap
Red Sox Fan Here!!!! We better not have interest, but bloom will make a bloom move.
JoeBrady
RS fan here, and I am quite interested. The ideal profile, if we were to acquire a SS instead of a 2B, would be to have 2 years of control, at which point we promote Mayer. Mateo has three left, so that is fine.
You know who reminds me of? The pre-AS Andres Gimenez. Prior to 2022,
Gimenez had a .225/.302/.369/.671
Mateo’s career .225/.271/.374/.645.
That’s about identical After that, the fielding and speed are pretty close. Of course, Gimenez is quite younger on the curve, but I’d be more inclined to think Mateo would improve, as opposed to reverting back. He’s also similar to Rosario, who also had mediocre offensive numbers with the NYMs.
I’d be willing to trade player(s) below Cedanne’s ranking.
mlb1225
While the triple-slash looks close, you also have to remember that Mateo has a career 27.7% K-rate and Gimenez only had a 24% K-rate in ’20-’21. Gimenez also batted .287/.342/.502 at Triple-A while Mateo has batted .262/.303/.433 at the same level.
JoeBrady
I’m not trying to make the case that Mateo will ever be better. He’s too old for that. But the point that I would like to make is that there is room for improvement. A couple of things I would look are:
1-He only had 237 PAs before 2022, which is practically nothing. As he becomes more experienced, his hitting should improve.
2-He improved a lot in the 2nd half, with a .692 OPS. If I thought the RS could get a .692, with his current defense, I’d move Cedanne in a heartbeat.
3-Just as a comparison to the non-superstar SSs, Mateo has a career OPS+ of 80. Swanson, thru his first three years, had an 84. Rosario had an 85 thru his first 762 PAs. Gimenez an 84 thru two years. Bogaerts an 84 thru 2 years. Tim Anderson an 88 thru 3.
If you take a look at the top half of SSs, I’d bet more of them look like Mateo’s development than Correa.

In reality, big names agree to contracts with the acquiring clubs behind the scenes prior to trades being consummated. Might be against the rules, but it happens in reality every single time.
JockStrap
“Why would they trade him? He’s their spark plug.”
If my “spark plug” had a career .271 OBP then I’d trade him for a newer model.
Troutahni
Spark Plug? You mean firing on less cylinders because you have a blown sparkplug. Talk to me when he gets his batting average up to. 270 and an OBA up to. 345. With his speed, now we’re talking.
I predict Mateo steals between 80-100 steaks this season.
Could you imagine the number of stolen bases the 1980s Cardinals would have if they were playing in this upcoming season.
Ra
.345? Get out of here! That would have ranked Mateo 3rd in all MLB last year…ahead of Trea Turner, Lindor, Bichette, Swanson, etc. etc. Mateo would be one of the top 25 players in baseball with a .345 OBA.
If he gets to .315 OBA, he would be a desirable replacement for half ML teams.
whyhayzee
Isn’t it wonderful that the new rules might help players that just aren’t very good?
mlb1225
The new shift rules aren’t going to affect Mateo much. He was only shifted on in 3% of his plate appearances.
JoeBrady
It won’t help his hitting, but it could make his fielding range more valuable.
misterb71
You have to make consistent contact for the shift rules to have had an effect on you as a hitter. Mateo can go for an entire series without putting the bat on the ball. If the offer is decent let another team take him.
Ra
The new rules also hurt players who aren’t very good. Does that make things all better for you?
cwsOverhaul
Looks like Mateo can become a valuable player for a team that has plenty of offense from other less critical positions. Nice to see if speed and good defensive SS make a comeback, as opposed to limited range guys defending to a spot. Casual fans and fantasy players like offense, but if he and others can resemble past wizards like Vizquel/Ozzie Smith, there is a lot of artistic beauty in those skills.
Troutahni
I read that was why the Oakland A’s picked up Estatuary Ruiz in the 3-team Sean Murphy trade.
gorav114
With an obp of .267 he was still worth 3.4 WAR. Shows how good that defense and speed are. I think he stays at short until the prospects are ready then becomes late game replacement with that speed and d
Bohs and Os
This will be a make or break year for mateo. He hit much better in the 2nd half of the season then the 1st half. Walked more too. If he can carry that over to a full season he will hit around .250 or .265. The good thing is when he hit the ball he hit it hard. Give him the everyday job like last year and see if he can put it all together.
CurtBlefary
Though I like what Mateo brings with his glove and speed, a trade would allow Urias to stay at 3B. Gunnar becomes the new SS with Westburg being given every opportunity at 2nd.
King Floch
Frazier will be the opening day 2B and Westburg will start the year at Norfolk.
Ra
Yes, they will start the year with Frazier at 2B. They should start with Gunnar at SS. If they do not trade Mateo, they could make him a true super utility player, capable of plus defense at every position except Catcher, an occasional pinch hitter, a top flight pinch runner and the ultimate extra inning ghost runner.
King Floch
Mateo is more valuable than his ugly triple slash would suggest at first glance. His speed gives him fantastic range at SS and obvious baserunning value, but he also has sneaky pop when he is actually able to connect- he hit 13 HRs last year and it probably would have been more like 15-18 if he was playing his home games in a park without the deepest LF wall in MLB.
He’s also had some runs where he has shown hints that he could be a more consistent offensive performer. In particular, there was a 5 or 6 week period last year where he posted an OPS well over .800 when he had made some adjustments and was showing more patience, but he eventually slipped back into his uber-aggressive hack-away approach.
If he can land us some starting pitching, either on his own or as part of a package, I’d be open to trading him and handing Gunnar the keys to SS, but I would not be upset if Mike Elias does not find a deal to his liking and holds onto Mateo for now either.
O'sSayCanYouSee
^ this! Nailed it.
Those hot streaks of his, were sooo tantalizing. Give him the Aderal (think Crush left some in his old locker) and watch those streaks become more normative. Maybe…
Troutahni
Now you got me thinking about the two players on the Angels with tantalizing speed and power. Andrew Velasquez and Joe Adell both get to first base very quickly. I think both are in the top 10 for not just all Right handed batters, but both sided batters. Both of them have very serious power. Velasquez surprised me this past season with his power. By the end of the season he was making much better contact. I can see a player like Velazquez being in demand like Mateo. The Angels will not DFA him because I think he is too valuable, especially with the new rule changes.
Ra
About 9 weeks for ~ .800 OPS. July + August.
dpsmith22
While I don’t think Mateo is much of a hitter, no SS in baseball can throw him out from the hole. His average will go up 30 points on ground balls to the left side. Once he gets on….he goes to second.
willpatten
I’m sure Elias will trade some infield depth for starting pitching. O’s have a wealth of shortstop talent.
2012orioles
Straight up electric player. I’d be upset seeing him go
Three Run Homer
Mateo’s defense helped the O’s pitching staff tremendously in 2022, but it makes sense to trade him if they can get a good return, because they have good major-league ready prospects waiting in the wings. Ortiz would be a close substitute for Mateo defensively and has more upside with the bat. Westburg has a stronger offensitve profile than Ortiz and his defense is solid although not elite.
Ra
I upvoted, but Westburg probably does not have the arm for the left side of the infield. Gunnar can play a plus SS though.
Thornton Mellon
I’m ok trading him for starting pitching in return.
I’d be ok keeping him for the aforementioned glove and speed. The problem is he doesn’t hit well…I mean “a little power” but he’s a #9 hitter on any decent offense. Keep him but find other ways to bolster what was a below average offense overall in 2022 that had trouble getting on base and dtruck out a lot.
MM.MM
Braves can not rely on the Arcia/Grissom duo for the entire 2023 season. They will need to address the loss of Swanson!!!
Kungfooshus
Mateo was exciting to watch, but I’d probably trade him and keep filling the pipeline with specs.
Ra
“Specs?” Is that slang for Starting Pitchers?
