This perceived toxicity issue on SD is funny… feels like the same people who said we’d never go over the CBT again. Were they broadcast nationally in such a light? The Pads are fine, in fact more than fine, they have a great clubhouse and added a good egg in X. Non-issue, move on.
bhambrave
It’s a non-issue, but you felt compelled to say something? Ok.
Gwynning
Just responding to the question posed in chat; it’s the 3rd time this week that somebody has mentioned something similar so I offered general insight. Both Judge and Trea were always destined for their respective teams and more power to them. We tried, they said no, we moved on. Again, just connecting dots here and “clearing the air” but you can choose to believe otherwise. Do you view the Padres as having a toxicity issue, Señor BirminghamBrave? If yes, then what makes you think that?
Manfred’s playing with the balls
Some would say steroid using and fighting in house looks toxic.
Gwynning
Howdy A’s! Tatis was not with the club when he popped for a masking agent ingredient found in his common pharmaceutical. Not smart, but generally speaking nobody here believes he was roiding. Maybe he was trying to cut corners to come back sooner, but even that is speculatory as well. Again, I’ll give you not smart and agree.
The Manny yelling at Tatis thing was 2 seasons ago now. If anything, i think it may help Tatis mature faster going forward. The common denominator would seem to be Junior; let’s see how he bounces back. He’s saying and doing all the right things, so we’re excited to see how he bounces back. Cheers mate, go Wrexham!
Brew’88
Losing about 35 of their last 50 games in 21 and missing the playoffs would make any competitive players get grumpy in the clubhouse. I like the personalities on the Pads, they have fun and go hard. X adds a vet pro that young guys will respect. Sorry Manaea couldn’t stick around, dude was a great teammate.
bhambrave
People like to poke fun at other teams, and the coincidence of two players allegedly declining better offers from the Padres to sign elsewhere was too good of an opportunity to pass up. No need to be sensitive about it.
Brew’88
I think a lot of envious fans from other teams like to concoct toxicity on their rivals, gives them a sense hope. Bet he was a bitter Mets fan.
Sid Bream Speed Demon
“Found in his common pharmaceutical” Aren’t we about sick of that excuse for $300 million dollar athletes by now? Tatis is a juicing man-baby who got injured on a motorcycle without notifying his team. He is a child that has heaps of money and attention thrown at him for now reason (cover of MLB The Show 2021) despite not winning a single thing that matters.
Gwynning
Can’t really argue, Sid. I feel the same. Honestly not trying to excuse his behavior, so apologies if I came across as glib. He messed up royally… and knows it. He is contrite. We’ll see… but I feel his worst days are behind him.
vtadave
Hello Mr. Tatis Sr.!
Gwynning
I wish I had a MLB grand slam, let alone 2 in one inning off Chan Ho!
Gwynning
Nobody is sensitive about it. I said what I said and offered queries into your perspective. Thanks for the response bham, and fair enough.
Concur Brew. Cheers all!

I agree that most fans of other teams wish their team was willing to go all in like the Padres. I understand Anthopoulos’ fiscal restraint. It cuts down on bad contracts, other than Ozuna. But it also cost us Freddie and is about to cost us Dansby.
Gwynning
Braves are amongst the smartest teams out there; they’ll make a run for the East in ’23 and be good for many, many years forward. What are their priorities going forward? Retain Fried?? Maybe that’s why Dansby would seem to be an afterthought…?
Youtube.com/@PINGTR1P
I don’t see them (Braves) signing someone like Rodon for his asking price, but it would be interesting to me to see that, and in turn trading a major piece like Fried for example. It’s a cute way of replenishing your farm system while still remaining competitive. I do realize it’s not ideal to do something like that if you’re going for it. I like Fried and he’s arguably the best LH starter in the game. I just wonder why ideas like that aren’t considered more often..
richardc
Yeah, two faces of the franchise and two club house leaders, that’s one of my biggest concerns with losing both of them..
Plus, the clubhouse joker is gone as well, and if anyone thinks Heredia wasn’t a beloved member of that team and clubhouse, then think again..
People all too often underestimate how a clubhouses chemistry can make or break a team, especially when the going gets tough. Which during a 180+ game season things are bound to get tough and repetitive…
From a position player standpoint who is going to be their leader?? d’Arnaud or Albies?? Is Riley ready?? Ozuna?? /: Olson is new and pretty quiet.. Acuña Jr. has matured alot since coming to the league, but he still doesn’t speak English..William Contreras, Michael Harris, and Vaughn Grissom were just rookies…Soo, all in all, idk that part does worry me a little bit…

8:34 Should there be a fine for every time someone says “Michael Brantley is a professional hitter?”
Mark P
8:34 Technically, aren’t they all professional hitters?
–
Depends what “Technically” we’re talkin’ about.
Does it refer to: 1) a player made the major leagues and has gone up to bat; or 2) hitting coaches look at the way a batter sets up pitchers and what sort of swings he puts on different pitches keeping in mind the count and the game situation.
–
John Hart was a buzzphrase word creator which he used to flim-flam the media. He came up with the “professional hitter” phrase to deflect questions at press conference when the Indians were in dire straits to get a pitcher coming down the stretch in a pennant race one year, and Hart couldn’t get one. Instead he got a utility-type guy from Pittsburgh that was a bad defender at multiple positions, but hit a bit above average. The media was so taken with the phrase that they didn’t point out that he wasn’t brining in any badly needed pitching, and that Cleveland had plenty of hitting. (I was working in San Francisco when I heard that and LOL’ed.)
Hart mentored Mark Shapiro, and he does the same thing – coming up with nifty sounding buzzphrases whereby the media walks away impressed while the teams fans wonder why the issue isn’t being addressed. Both shoulda become politicians – forget the published salary, they could made a lot more money there.

There was a 10-minute gap in the chat, at least on my screen:
“Kramer
8:24 with details of the As ask to the cards for Murphy becoming clear (2 pre arb plug and play mlb players and a top 3 prospect) how do you see it all shaking out. Do any of the suitors have that type of package to put together and stay competitive. What would an Astros or Guardians deal look like?
Mark P
8:34 Technically, aren’t they all professional hitters?”
(Where was Nixon when this puzzling gap happened? )

Dropping a deuce.
Angels & NL West
I hope D-backs GM Mike Hazen does not agree to any trades proposed by MLBTR posters. The trades generally involve the D-backs giving up 10+ years of high upside, low cost control for 1-3 years of a solid, overpaid player.
highheat
Yeah, I’m getting a bit tired of explaining it to folks; better to let them have their delusions of grandeur and get upset when reality falls short of their expectations. I’m all for fun trade proposals, but let’s have at least some basis in reality.
On note of those OFs, I really think that the DBacks would regret trading McCarthy. It’s not just his almost perfect platoon splits (which are almost too similar to be coincidental, but we’ll call it a coincidence for now). It’s not just his elite speed (10th in MLB last season). There’s also upside for his defense (although, not nearly to the same Gold Glove level as the other three).
His CF defense has been SSS both years that he appeared, but his range in CF is viewed in a positive light. He had negative marks in the OF corners (particularly in regards to his range), but he also played each of LF and RF more this season than he had played either in the entirety of his MiLB career. Some familiarity (or better reads) in the COF could help him more effectively translate that speed to better range; I’m willing to bet on athleticism most times.
Yankee Clipper
Mark never answers my questions…..
Like tonight, it was simple: “Mark, what are you wearing (winky face)?”
I don’t get it, seems like an easy question to answer.
Gwynning
He gave you his answer by saying nothing…! 😉
.
Hahahaha Pretty funny Clip!!!!
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
Sigh, smh Clip, you need to work on your game, my brother. Not going to get many dates with that move…
Yankee Clipper
Wait, doesn’t the winky face mean friend? Maybe that’s why so many people react the way they do!
Jean Matrac
Sorry Mark, I’m a fan, but saying “everything broke exactly right” for the Giants in 2021 is just lazy analysis. Admittedly a lot did break right, and it was a lot more than went wrong.
But if everything went exactly right Longoria doesn’t miss half the season. Belt plays more than 97 games and doesn’t go down with injury within sight of the PS. Aaron Sanchez doesn’t get injured while having a very good season. Mike Tauchman doesn’t underwhelm. Alex Dickerson doesn’t have an OPS+ 61 points lower than the he had the previous season. Matt Wisler doesn’t post an ERA+ 43 points lower than the year before. And Tommy La Stella would have played more than 76 games and not had an OPS+ 30 points lower than the season before.
Not only that, but everything breaking right would imply a lot of career best seasons. In fact, only Crawford, and Gausman posted career best numbers. No, everything did not break exactly right for the Giants in 2021.
bhambrave
Considering they won a franchise record number of games, and in the other 5 years since 2017 they were mediocre to bad, I’d say that everything broke right, from a team perspective. 2021 was the outlier of outliers.
Mi Casas es tu Casas
And Kapler became the most overrated manager in the game
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
Strange in professional sports how a manager / head coach who shows a bit more empathy and emotional intelligence than your average stoic, no emotion hard a$$ manager/head coach is derided, mocked, called “woke” (omg the worst slur!) and generally scoffed at as somehow deficient despite their success and overall stellar reputations. Gabe Kapler and Scott Servais come to mind in MLB and Pete Carroll in the NFL. I suppose there will always be fans who will be rubbed the wrong way by those character traits, despite how well respected they are by their players.
bhambrave
Strange how people want to bring politics into baseball. BTW, Pete Carroll was a cheater at USC, but whatever.
HarrytheK0880
At least your post doesn’t belie your namesake
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
@bhambrave I will look into those cheating allegations, I don’t follow college football and perhaps those stories are blacklisted here in Seattle as I’ve never even heard rumors of that. And fwiw I did not agree with Kapler’s publicity stunt with the anthem, that was dumb, but I don’t think it takes anything away from his talents as a manager.
bhambrave
The bottom line is, when someone wins, people love him. When he loses, they don’t.
Jean Matrac
bhambrave, So despite my list of things that didn’t go right in 2021, you’re going to insist that everything did? You’re looking at the 2017-18 Giants in comparison? The 2021 team was very different from those teams. In 2017 only catcher, 1B, and SS were the same as in 2021.The ’17 and ’18 teams had completely different OFs. Cueto was the only SP on those teams, and he was #5 in ’21.
I’m not saying 2021 wasn’t flukish, it was, but you’re ignoring the degree of that fluke. Did luck give them 10 wins more than they should have? 15? At what point does that number get unrealistic? It would seem 20 extra wins by pure luck defies logic. Even 15 lucky wins would have given them 92. Still good, with a WC probability.
But what is also illogical is to believe that 2022 was who the Giants really were. That bad luck didn’t play a huge role. How is it that people think all the luck the Giants had in the last 2 seasons was only good?
But I get it. You don’t like Giants, And are just using the opportunity to throw shade. But the bottom line is calling any team the outlier of all outliers without a single fact to back it up is just weak analysis.
bhambrave
I don’t really care about the Giants one way or the other. Looking at their expected wins and losses over those six years (based on run differential), they were at best mediocre except for 2021, when they were expected to win 103 games. One of these things is not like the others, and 2021 is not like the others, hence the outlier label. 2022 IS pretty much who the Giants were. They won 81 games, and their Pythagorean w-l was 83-79.
Giants Pythagoreans for last six years, compared to actual:
Year Pyth. Actual
2017 67-95 64-98
2018 70-92 73-89
2019 71-91 77-85
2020 30-30 29-31
2021 103-59 107-55
2022 83-79 81-81
Jean Matrac
I guess you didn’t read my post. Otherwise, why the nonsensical comparisons to 2017 and 2018 when the rosters from those years bear little similarity to the 2021 roster?
Not sure the Pythagorean proves much of anything, especially since you seem to be misinterpreting it. It is not the expected wins. It’s what the expected record would have been based on run differential. It’s updated throughout the season, the final number arrived at only at seasons end.
You seem to be treating it like a projection, and it is nothing like that. It’s backward looking, showings basically how lucky a team has been. That 2021 team wasn’t expected to win 103 games. They won 107 games but, based on their run differential, were a little lucky in winning an extra 4.
That does nothing to support the idea that 2021 was the outlier of all outliers, in fact it goes counter to that.
bhambrave
So a 20+ difference in wins isn’t an outlier? Ok, whatever.
Jean Matrac
From one year to the next?. No not at all. Look at any team’s record and you’ll see some years with a a significant difference. The 2013 Red Sox won 28 more games than the 2012 team. Their 2019 team lost 24 games more than the 2018 team. The 2015 Cubs won 24 games than they did the year before.
Your 2018 Braves won 18 more games than they did in 2017. Is 20 games that much more an outlier than 18? Yeah, but what do I know.
bhambrave
There’s a difference between an outlier and a trend. The Braves were emerging from a rebuild. Check their wins in the previous and subsequent seasons.
Jean Matrac
Go ahead and rationalize the reasons. I looked at the recent history of 4 teams. I found big variations, from one season to the next, in 3 of the 4. I find that fairly conclusive. I’m not going to look at every team’s recent history to show you that you’re wrong. You can believe what you want, and I’ll believe what I do.
bhambrave
It’s not rationalization. Different teams have different circumstances. Doing a random superficial scan of a few teams without context is pointless.
Jean Matrac
Random samples have value. Literally every poll you see is based on random samples and most are accurate. But okay, looking at this century only:
The D’backs won 22 more games in 2022 than the year before.
The Orioles won 31 more games in 2022 than the year before.
The Reds won 18 more games in 2012 than the year before.
The Guardians won 24 more games in 2013 than the year before.
The Rockies won 18 more games in 2009 than the year before.
The Tigers won 29 more games in 2004 than the year before, and won 24 more games in 2006 than the year before.
The Astros won 19 more games in 2014 than the year before, and won 16 more games in 2015 than the year before.
The Royals won 21 more games in 2003 than the year before.
The Angels won 20 more games in 2014 than the year before.
The Brewers won 19 more games in 2011 than the year before.
The Twins won 23 more games in 2019 than the year before.
The Mets won 24 more games in 2022 than the year before.
The A’s won 22 more games in 2018 than the year before.
The Padres won 23 more games in 2003 than the year before.
The Mariners won 24 more games in 2009 than the year before.
The Cardinals won 20 more games in 2004 than the year before.
The Rays won 31 more games in 2008 than the year before.
The Rangers won 23 more games in 2014 than the year before.
The Nat’s won 18 more games in 2012 than the year before.
I previously mentioned the Braves, Red Sox, and Cubs.
Only the Dodgers, W Sox, Marlins, Yankees, Pirates, and Phillies did not show an improvement of 18 or more games. But all had double digit improvements like the W Sox (+17), the Dodgers (+13), Phillies (+14), etc.. And the Pirates had two 15 game improvements over two consecutive seasons from from 2011 to 2012, and from 2012 to 2013.
So your silly insistence that a +20 game delta in wins is evidence of the outlier of all outliers is not only hyperbole, but patently incorrect.

Yes, the B thing was tired and lame after the first few meaningless iterations. It has no sustaining value.

If you google it, you get an obscure reference to a tv show, I think. I googled it once, but forgot the source.

NYY fans wanting Tatis Jr on tweeter is funny.. 24 ye old Nando.. package starts with Nestor + Judge a d add your top 4 specs.. stop the madness ..Padres are printing $$$ they aren’t dumping Tatis and certainly not for those ridiculous trades proposed on twitter
LouWhitakerHOF
Remember the days when the Yankees and Red Sox were the top 2 teams after every top free agent. The Red Sox are not even in the bidding anymore and let their own free agents walk. The Dodgers, Mets and Padres have replaced them as the big spenders. Have the Red Sox turned into a small market club? What happen to them?
