The Mets have made their signing of reliever Adam Ottavino official, announcing it today. They also announced that right-hander William Woods was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.
Woods, 24 later this week, was on Baseball America’s list of top 30 Atlanta prospects in each of the past two seasons, with BA highlighting a fastball that has been reaching triple digits after the minors were canceled in 2020. Injuries limited him to just 10 2/3 innings in 2021 but the club still added him to the 40-man roster to protect him from the Rule 5 draft.
He made his MLB debut this year but was only given the chance to make two appearances in the show. He tossed 25 1/3 innings at various minor league stops, but posted a disappointing 6.04 ERA, along with a 24.1% strikeout rate and 9.8% walk rate.
He was designated for assignment in November and was claimed by the Mets, who were facing a huge bullpen exodus at the time. Edwin Díaz was quickly re-signed but Ottavino, Seth Lugo, Trevor May, Trevor Williams, Joely Rodriguez and Mychal Givens all became free agents. The Mets have since improved the situation by re-signing Ottavino, signing David Robertson and trading for Brooks Raley. Woods has now been squeezed off the roster and The Mets will have one week to trade him or pass him through waivers. He could stick with the organization if he were to clear those waivers, as he lacks the service time or previous career outright that would give him the right to elect free agency.
Any relation to Woody williams?
Golden
What about Wilber Wood?
Woody Boyd?
Walt Williams?
“No neck” Williams!
With paring down the 40-man, they’re not out of the woods yet.
Woods got chopped.
Woods got axed
noone “saw” it coming ?
The Mets are out of the Woods now.
Good one
Getting rid of dead Wood
Would expect NYM to add one more BP arm with a track record.
Carl Lewis is available.
I saw him win his last gold medal in Atlanta, so he’s a bit old for it, but, if he’s done pursuing a soccer career, Usain Bolt should be available. I’m not sure about his pitching repertoire, but he could eliminate the need for a player like Terrance Gore.
If I had that name I would definitely go by Bill Woods. Definitely not Willy Woods though.
Willy Woods
His nickname is Morning Woods!
Good looking prospect. It’d be nice for the Mets if they could get him back in AAA.
I wasn’t even aware he was on the roster. I feel like the Mets still have 41 men on the roster unless I’m missing something.
Nope, it’s 40. They had two known commitments outstanding. The Woods DFA clears the spot for Ottavino. Tyler Saucedo could be the next to go if and when they officially sign Correa. They could put an NRI player, like Hunter or Peraza, on the 40-man roster when pitchers and catchers report, because that’s when the 60-day IL opens. Danny Mendick is recovering from a torn ACL suffered in June. He was non-tendered by the White Sox, so the Mets took a chance on him on a 1-year/$1M deal. He could be ready by the start of the season but putting him on the 60-day could clear the spot until mid-April at the earliest.
It’s actually 60 days from the start of the regular season. Spring Training doesn’t start that countdown clock.
It’s actually 60 days from the beginning of the regular season. Spring Training doesn’t start that countdown clock.
Is that clear? Per this article from 3/17, Domingo German was supposed to be available to the Yankees by May if he was put on the 60-day at that point. The season start was delayed by the lockout. How would that have been possible if it was restricted to starting on opening day? mlbtraderumors.com/2022/03/yankees-place-domingo-g…
Hey Phenom. Domingo had ‘time served’ holdover credit from a ’21 IL stint, lessening his initial ’22 60-Day placement. You can hit the IL in ST but it doesn’t start counting down until real games are missed. (Clock starts on Opening Day)
Danny Mendick has been on the 60-day since June with a torn ACL. Even though he was non-tendered, would he have a credit remaining from last year?
Thanks! I lost track somehow.
You are right, the clock starts when a player is assigned to the 60-day list. . However, that list does not open until sometime in the middle of spring training. List or not, I Really don’t see why would you add an NRI player at the start of spring training, rather than wait till later in spring to see who earns it and what the team needs at that point. I’ve never heard of or seen any team add marginal players early on. Someone else could (and usually does) get hurt during the spring. And there are still moves to be made between now and then, anyway. As for Mendick, he might be ready by the start of the season, or at least be less than 60 days away from ready. So we can’t assume that he’s going on that list anyway..
Mid 90s velo 3 pitch mix has SP experience ..got called up and 2 IP 0.00ERA.. 23yrs old
He will be picked up fast
The Oakland A’s love braves prospects, definitely need that velo!
How many teams have a empty 40 man spot?
I think the real question is how many teams would make a spot for this kid…? I don’t think he’ll go down the Waiver list very far though.
Top 30 Braves Prospect two years in a row, now DFA’d twice in a couple of months. This is the flip side of the money part of baseball. While the 50 Top Fee Agents are making enormous amounts of money, guys like Woods are just hoping to hang on long enough with some team to show them there’s something there. You’d think a guy who throws 100 might make a potential fit somewhere.
He will find himself in the closer roll when MLB hands out a PED suspension to Diaz
Weird.
Don’t project onto Sugar (or onto his brother, Alexis). Don’t assume everyone needs PEDs to throw “sliderwithcheeze.”
Less salt on your sliders, the losses will taste better.
Wood will land somewhere. He only has 143 innings in organized ball and he struck out 9.4 per 9 in the minors. Tough to develop, though, when you only pitched more than 31 innings in a year the one time, and that was only 50 innings.
Here’s your birthday present Mr. Woods.
Cmon Milwaukee pick him up and get Kelley off the 40 man roster please!!!
The Tigers have their new closer.
He can live in Huntington Woods, take Woodward to work, and spend the rest of this winter tromping through where Michigan bears answer the call.
Back to the Braves with a DFA of newly resigned Jackson Stephens. Never mind no way he falls back to the Braves and I’m puzzled why AA just DFA’d Woods in the first place.
