The Marlins have acquired minor league outfielder Jake Mangum from the Mets, tweets Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald. He’s the player to be named later in the deal that sent Elieser Hernández and Jeff Brigham to Queens last month.
A college star at Mississippi State, Mangum hit .357/.420/.457 over four seasons in Starkville. A fourth-round senior sign in the 2019 draft, the switch-hitter has played three seasons in the New York farm system. He owns a .284/.346/.414 line in just under 900 professional plate appearances, including a .333/.365/.471 showing in 33 games for Triple-A Syracuse this year.
Mangum, 26, doesn’t bring much power to the table. Yet he puts the ball in play frequently and is capable of playing center field, giving him a chance to carve out a role as a fourth or fifth outfielder. Baseball America slotted him as the #28 prospect in the New York system entering the 2022 campaign.
Despite his decent minor league numbers, the Mets decided not to add Mangum to the 40-man roster to keep him from selection in the Rule 5 draft. He went unselected in that process this afternoon, and the Marlins acquired him within hours of ensuring they wouldn’t lose him in the Rule 5. He won’t require a 40-man roster spot in Miami, meaning he’ll provide the Fish some upper level non-roster depth.

Now that’s truly one of the last names in history

Some Mets fans on other platforms butt hurt trading a player not selected in the Rule V draft.

Hope you caught my very subtle “A-Team” reference there.

I caught it Fink haha, and unfortunately A-Team is one of the very few classics I couldn’t get into. I love all the old western shows. Palladin, Gunsmoke, Cheyenne…I also watch “Emergency” and “Waltons” daily haha

I was just wondering earlier this evening how many people understood the reference in Seinfeld when Jerry said: “A rebel? No. Johnny Yuma was a rebel! Eckman is a nut!”

hell just a few weeks ago I was binge watching little house on the prairie lol. they just don’t make shows like these anymore. too much garbage on tv

“Cheers” was really great, indeed; not just a classic, but genuinely funny. But I even liked “Frasier” so infinitely better – what a masterpiece arose from that spinoff!

Dang on birthday a one letter mistake was made that could have changed this guy’s whole life
Nomar 2
Thought he was a potential rule 5 guy. Wonder how they got around the draft.
Hello, Newman
I was thinking the exact same thing.
Chris G.
It was probably contingent on him not being selected in the draft which is why it’s announced now. If another team drafted him then there was most likely a backup player that the Marlins had requested.
astick
Dang. I just thought of that movie with Magnum Overdrive with Richard Simmons from Kiss. The one with the robots. He was a cop.

Gene Simmons. Richard is the happy exercise guru

Were you wondering if he uses Mangum XLs?

I Yahoo’d what you guys are talking about. You’re talking about condoms. Cracking me up.

If he uses Mangum XLs, I’m sure the person in his life will indeed Yahoo a lot.
Mangums are not for the average guy. Hilarious you didn’t know what they are. LOL!!!

“Man-gum” is decidedly less cool than Magnum.

Mets couldn’t wait to get rid of this guy – Big mistake. So stupid. He escapes not being protected in the Rule 5 draft and then they trade him. He plays great defense, runs well and hits for contact.
MarlinsFanBase
Buuuuut, is 26 and has not played a single game at the MLB level. The only way I’d complain about trading a guy like this away is if he was blocked by an OF composed of Trout, Harper and Judge…with Acuna as the 4th OF and Shohei as the DH. Since that is not the case with the Mets, the guy is nothing to cry about.
Now he can always make me happily wrong if he turns out to be a diamond in the rough stud. I won’t hold my breath about that.
LongTimeFan1
MarlinsFanBase
You should be happy your team got this guy. Your comment isn’t particularly useful when you don’t know a thing about his skillset. Your comment is filled with generalized blah, blah, blah which tells me you know nothing about the player and how he plays the game.
MarlinsFanBase
Hey, I’d definitely would be happy if I’m wrong, but I will not hold my breath with a guy that the Mets didn’t feel was good enough to make his MLB debut yet at age age 26…not even a cup of tea yet.
Most guys that fall into the borderline Rule 5 , not making his debut after so much time in MiLB, usually don’t do much or anything at the MLB level.
Unless you are saying that your Mets didn’t know what they were doing in not bringing this guy up yet….and keeping him?
I hope you’re right and I’m wrong. Again, not holding my breath.
richardc
I honestly have no idea why he hasn’t even got an opportunity with the Mets..!?!
It seems like wherever the dude goes all he does is hit!! And he can play CF!?! WTF are the Mets thinking not even giving him just a shot??
jmaggio76
he was blocked each time. with Nimmo, conforto, Marte, canha over the past two years, hell eve jankowski. the guy was blocked… like Mauricio and even the kid Ramirez. unfortunately was never given a chance, and they will regret this one, just as bad as losing PCA in the dumb trade with Baez
rct
@MarlinsFanBase: I don’t think you should dismiss him so quickly based on his age. He played college ball until he was 23, then had the year off in 2020 for COVID like the rest of the minor leagues. Look at his progression instead: first year in the minors was low A ball, second year was high A to AA, third year (last year) was AA to AAA. If he continues like this (and he hit well at AAA), you will see him in the majors this year. I think it’s a solid get for the Marlins considering what they gave up.
MarlinsFanBase
I hope you all are right and that I’m wrong on this one. I just ain’t getting my hopes up on a guy in this situation.
Good point about the Covid situation because that did change a lot of the normal equations. I hope this is one of them.
But again, I won’t expect much, and he’ll be an afterthought until he draws my attention again.
MarlinsFanBase
For what it’s worth, if this guy does help us next season, it could possibly save Kim Ng her job if she pulls off a find like that…that is if Elieser doesn’t find himself with the Mets and ends up becoming a sold #5 or 4 or even 3 for you all.
Ma4170
I always wondered why they invested in guys like jankowski when they could have called up Jake… they must not think his game can translate well to MLB but who knows
VonPurpleHayes
Jake Mangum and Jill Womangum
LFGMets (Metsin7)
I dont like this at all. Jake Magnum has hit at every level in the minor leagues and plays Center Field. The Mets will regret this. Should of gave the guy a chance
LordD99
I do think there’s a chance he can hit on the MLB level. At least he should get a chance with the Marlins.
MarlinsFanBase
The guy is 26 and yet to play in MLB yet. I wouldn’t cry about it if I were you.
LFGMets (Metsin7)
@MarlinsFanBase does the name Jeff McNeil ring a bell? Witt Merrifield? Enjoy another last place finish
MarlinsFanBase
Wait, I’m confused. You’re arguing with me about a guy that we just got from your team being better than I expect, but then wish us another last place finish?
I think you need to rethink this. You’re coming off like a contrarian when you do something like that. Figure out why.
LongTimeFan1
LFGMets
This trade pisses me off too. This was big mistake by the Mets especially when they need great CF defense, speed and contact either depth or potential future starter or platoon option. .
Bill
They didn’t protect him from the Rule 5 draft, yet no one took him. Even the Marlins didn’t take him but traded for him, which to me means that they didn’t want to commit to keeping him on the MLB roster all season.
MarlinsFanBase
Well, now that the Marlins made this move, we’re on a roll now. Watch out folks! Kim Ng is making her presence known!
Mario93
I’m guessing his middle name must be Trojan. Jake Trojan Magnum.
tutopelotas1
Looks like a very valuable acquisition from this trade for The Fish, Consistent good hitter,, that must come hungry (as he is somewhat older) to make the team, and is a very good .990 fielder in his career as a centerfielder… A much needed position player.. Good addition !!
rct
Too bad he doesn’t have any power. I guess Mangum ain’t hitting any monster dongs.
Kruk's Beer League
Scouts and ladies agree that he has an 80 grade bat.
cadagan
Uggla 2.0?
Justin Turner?
Or just a guy
MarlinsFanBase
Well, we know what historical odds say.
At least he has an entertaining last name for this thread. If he can make the roster, it would be cool to hear the line that Billy the Marlins and Mangum are hanging with the mermaids on the field.
cadagan
Drops a magnum on the ground kinda accidentally in front of hot babes.
“Oops sorry. That’s mine”
flyingblindsquirrel
What an emotional rollercoaster day for this kid. Starts out thinking there’s a decent chance he gets drafted in Rule 5… survives it, doesn’t get picked so he remains 1 step (i.e.injury) away from the big show on a win now team and by the end of the night, he’s a bottom-feeding fish.
MarlinsFanBase
And now he has jokes about his last name.
But I’m sure he’ll be okay. Mangum seems like a big boy who can handle it.
flyingblindsquirrel
I’m sure he’s been hearing those same jokes since middle school.
los_leebos
Guess J Mangum is headed on the aeroplane over the sea from NY to FL. Wonder if his communist daughter and his two-headed boy are coming with him.
cadagan
Swings a big stick

So in the past 18 mos. the Mets trade PCA and now Mangum plus could lose Nimmo in FA. Do they feel they don’t need anyone to man CF or have depth there.
He’s a good player who the Mets undervalued.
bryan c
Calm down. PCA and ManGum are not similar. Defense first guy that at best will be a slap hitter at the MLB level but more likely a AAAA type guy.
Check the pipeline and search Alex Ramirez. I assure the CF of the future is still safe and sound in the organization. Couple year away. Benintendi for two years or put McNeil in left and Marte in center with Baty at third and Escobar at second for the year will suffice. Nimmo is a fan favorite and a great guy. He is not going to be the piece that turns a horse race into a slam dunk.
padam
Marte.
wright1970
Ineptler strikes again!! he loses every trade lol
bryan c
What do you honestly expect from a 27 year old that hits singles while playing good D? Kevin Pillar was better and didn’t really move the needle. In turn we got a 27 YO pitcher with nasty stuff that hasn’t been able to harness it. I’ll take Hernández all day
Canosucks
@wright1970 Great name Ineptler can I use it?
wright1970
Cano, i didnt bother to patent the name, so go ahead lol
bryan c
There is something childishly amusing to me to give the Marlins our ManGum
Domingo111
The marlins are having an interesting change of strategy. The last years they focused on acquiring explosive athletes with star upside but often very bad k/bb rates.
It worked in some cases (jazz) but in most cases it did not work so ang changed the strategy acquiring some lower powered, higher contact and plate discipline guys maybe trying to mimick the guardians approach.
We will see how that works. It could lead to a toothless offense which hits a tons of soft outs but maybe it also is like with the guardians where they score just enough behind good pitching with contact, small ball and an occasional homer.
That won’t make the offense great immediately but you have to try something
angt222
Not a bad return for Marlins. Def potential be be a major league contributor this season. For Mets he was expendable, as evidenced by not being added to the 40-man roster prior to the Rule 5 draft.
Habeto
For being a PTBNL, is a solid pick up. But, Mangum looks every bit as Brian Miller.
I mean, that’s fine but this team needs way more than that.
I will not complain about the Rule 5 pick up, but again, we need bats. I really don’t understand what is going on with the roster construction approach.
Berkner
This explains what the Marlins are doing and why
mlbtraderumors.com/2022/10/marlins-prioritizing-hi…
Habeto
They SAID that, but they aren’t doing it. Mangum has 33 games in AAA and surely will not help the ML team now… maybe in July if we’re lucky.
There were at least 5 unclaimed players via Rule 5 who could have helped that line up now, but yet again, they picked an (interesting) arm.
GarryHarris
None of the four players that went in either direction are noteworthy. Makes me wonder why I’m even commenting.
fre5hwind
Jake Man Gum!
jmaggio76
damn it!!! was REALLY hoping he’d be the outfield replacement! theres a lot of things about this guy that is gonna make him a heck of a ball player, if given the chance. just another minor player who was progressing and we lose! bad enough we gave up on PCA to the Cubs for rental player Baez. this sucks!
nottinghamforest13
Kim Ng making big time deals.
BSHH
Mangum may not be a blue-chip prospect, but I am really surprised that the Mets made him available (via PTBNL) as an add-on for two players who were already DFA’d. If he manages a .315 OBP and plays passable CF, he would have quite some value.
Gruß,
BSHH
