The Tigers have a lot of upgrades to make following a 96-loss season, and the club is exploring several veteran options on the free agent market. Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports that such players as Seth Lugo, Adam Frazier, Brian Anderson, and Edwin Rios have all drawn interest from the Tigers, and Wil Myers is also on the radar, but “the Tigers aren’t viewed as a frontrunner for Myers.” As for players who have already landed elsewhere, Detroit also had interest in Jace Peterson before he signed with the Athletics during the Winter Meetings.
Signing any of the available players would add some experience to the lineup and address at least one position on a roster with plenty of uncertainty. Third base is open after Jeimer Candelario was non-tendered, and Tigers manager A.J. Hinch told Petzold and other reporters during the Winter Meetings that second base playing time may also be available, depending on where Jonathan Schoop is utilized. Hinch suggested that Schoop could also see time at first base or third base, apart from just the keystone.
Realistically, Schoop is more likely to spend most of his time on the right side of the diamond, given that his big league third base experience consists of 133 2/3 innings with the Orioles back in 2014, and a single inning at the hot corner in 2021. Schoop (like many Detroit hitters) is also coming off a dismal year at the plate, and since he is only under contract through 2023, might not be in the long-term plans of new president of baseball operations Scott Harris.
Frazier has mostly played second base throughout his career, but he has also bounced around to both corner outfield positions, and a smattering of games at third base, shortstop, and center field. Signing Frazier would allow the Tigers some flexibility in planning the lineup, as Frazier or Schoop or rookie Ryan Kreidler could be shuffled around the infield as matchups dictate, and Frazier could also chip in as part of the outfield mix.
Of course, Frazier also didn’t hit much in 2022, batting .238/.301/.311 with three homers over 602 plate appearances with the Mariners. Since the start of the 2020 season, Frazier has a 95 wRC+ and a .266/.329/.362 slash line over 1471 PA with the Pirates, Padres, and Mariners, and much of his production in that stretch was concentrated within a fantastic three-month stretch with Pittsburgh early in the 2021 campaign (which helped Frazier earn an All-Star nod).
Despite these struggles, Frazier is looking for a two-year contract, according to Petzold. An argument can be made that Frazier (who turns 31 later this week) might still be worth such a commitment since he is a strong defender, and he has consistently been one of baseball’s tougher hitters to strike out. While Frazier’s extreme contact doesn’t result in many hard-hit balls, the potential is there for Frazier to become a very productive hitter if he can just barrel the ball with more consistency. Given how the Tigers had one of the highest strikeout rates of any team in baseball in 2022, simply getting a contact hitter of any ilk might also help Detroit’s offensive woes.
Anderson and Rios were respectively non-tendered by the Marlins and Dodgers, and while both players have experience at other positions (Anderson mostly in right field, Rios at first base), the Tigers would probably view either as candidates to take over from Candelario at third base. Like Frazier, these two are also looking to bounce back from underwhelming seasons, as Anderson and Rios both missed time to injury.
After posting solid numbers in 2018-20, it seemed like Anderson was on his way to becoming a building block in Miami before injuries cut into his playing time in each of the last two seasons. Anderson hit .266/.350/.436 (115 wRC+) over 1419 PA from 2018-20, but those numbers dropped to a 93 wRC+ and a .233/.321/.359 slash line over 647 PA in 2021-22.
Rios is an intriguing wild card option, as he owns a career 112 wRC+ but only over 291 career PA in the majors. The Dodgers used Rios as a part-time player for four seasons, and while it is quite possible he might’ve earned more playing time on a less star-studded team, Los Angeles seemingly never saw Rios as more than a spare part. Injuries also played a factor, as Rios missed most of the 2021 campaign due to shoulder surgery, and a hamstring tear last season resulted in a trip to the 60-day injured list.
While it doesn’t seem like Myers will be arriving in Detroit, he is an on-paper fit for playing time as a right fielder, DH, and first baseman. Spencer Torkelson will naturally get every opportunity for regular at-bats at first base next season, but Schoop might also get some first-base time, and Miguel Cabrera and Austin Meadows will get DH at-bats. A player like Myers would be an option for right field when Meadows is getting a DH day, plus Myers could also shift over to left field.
The Tigers are the latest of many teams linked to Lugo’s market, and Detroit is one of the clubs with interest in Lugo as a starting pitcher. The right-hander has worked exclusively as a reliever in three of the last four seasons with the Mets, and he hasn’t been a true full-time starter since 2017. However, Lugo has kept his arm relatively loose as a swingman and multi-inning reliever, and naturally a move back to rotation work could be very lucrative as he enters free agency for the first time.
Given how the Tigers were crushed by pitching injuries in 2022, the club can offer plenty of opportunity to Lugo as it looks to rebuild its rotation. With so much interest in his services, it isn’t hard to imagine that Lugo could land a two-year contract, as a team could view him as a starting candidate for 2023 and (if things don’t go well) at worst a reliever for 2024. If Lugo succeeds as a starter and the Tigers’ younger arms all return healthy down the road, such a crowded-rotation scenario counts as a nice problem to have for the team in the future.
Detroit already brought back Matt Boyd on a one-year contract, with Boyd also looking for a move back to starting pitching. The Tigers’ current rotation lines up as Eduardo Rodriguez, Matt Manning, Spencer Turnbull, and Boyd, with Joey Wentz, Tyler Alexander, Alex Faedo, and Beau Brieske all in competition for that fifth starter’s job.
In the bigger picture, none of Detroit’s free agent targets look to receive more than a one- or perhaps a two-year deal at most. This speaks to Harris’ apparent strategy (or ownership’s preference) of avoiding any big immediate expenditures, as the Tigers flopped after last winter’s major spending spree. The plan for 2023 might be for Harris and the Tigers to patch holes with some veteran additions, and then see how the roster — both the younger core and veteran stars like Rodriguez or Javier Baez — can collectively regroup after the disastrous 2022 season.

Whatever happened with the Correa-Hinch reunion?? Is that still a thing?
SanDiegoTom
Baez might slide to second? I like that move
davidkaner
Never will happen
davidkaner
Correa was offered 10 year 275 million from the Tigers & he turned it down last year. Not a chance a year later that they now go 10 years 350 million. It’s not even remotely being considered.
oldleftylong
Not happening.
davidkaner
They had a chance last year for a 10 year 300 million so now, a year later, 10 year & 350 million is never ever going to happen. Won’t even be in the discussion.

DodgerOK
Another long season for the Tigers.
C Yards Jeff
Agreed. With pitchers at various stages of rehab and/or healing from injury, 23 is a bridge to 24 or maybe even 25? This article reads like they’re trying to contend in 23? Are there enough healthy arms for this to be an option?
TheGreatBaseballMind
I think a Robbie Grossman reunion would be a good, inexpensive signing for the Tigers or Adam Duvall if they wanted to spend a little more.
SaintChris
Didn’t Grossman kind of speak poorly on the Tigers after he left, said the Braves were immediately able to identify and fix his swing issue, something the Tiger’s couldn’t do?
Tigers3232
He did
TheGreatBaseballMind
I was unaware of that. Thinking it didn’t burn any bridges. Historically he hits lefties well and with the Tigers having Greene, Meadows, Carpenter and Baddoo, all left handed batters, I just see Grossman as a good, inexpensive one year signing to compliment those four that fits the Tigers.
GarryHarris
Greene is a LF and the rest are DHs. Not exactly the type of oF if you’re building a pitching-first team.
Jm207* 2
I remember that. He hit 2 homeruns in a couple of days, made that comment, and then proceeded to play just as poorly as he did in Detroit for the rest of the season.
SalaryCapMyth
Did Grossman really say that? It’s too bad his performance with the Braves doesn’t really validate his claim. His performance improved but it still wasn’t good.
Tigers3232
Yes, he had a hot start and made comment in the week following the trade.
xXTheFETTXx
No way. Grossman is ticking downward, is the wrong side of 30 and we already have too many OF. Tigers need SP and INF help more than anything. Bringing Grossman back isn’t helping anyone.
Airo13
Please no. I can’t stand Grossman and he is bad at baseball.
TheGreatBaseballMind
I am not saying Grossman to start or build around. Just for 2023 as the weak side compliment to the 4 left handed batters I mentioned earlier. Even in Grossman’s very poor 2022 numbers, he did have an OPS of .879 against left handers.
xXTheFETTXx
There is no reason for this.
Hello, Newman
The pitching market is nuts right now. I hope the Tigers are exploring trade suitors for ERod. 1 year of Cisnero is another one to keep an eye on.
They need a 3b, they especially need near-ready mlb talent. A Josh Donaldson trade would be interesting.
Joe says...
Donaldson still plays great defense but he can’t catch up to a good fastball anymore.
Hello, Newman
He has been soo good up until last year. I get that he’s 37, but I think he would be well worth the gamble. If he picks up where he left off from 2021, it’s a steal. More importantly, they need to replenish the farm any way they can.
not alkaline
After NY signs Correa they can unload Donaldson’s (and Hix?)) contract on Detroit if they throw in Volpe.
avenger65
Donaldson’s problem is his mouth. It’s gotten him in trouble more than once.
deej
Last year he was hitting 400 foot homeruns off 100mph fastballs from Michael Kopech. I doubt he all of a sudden can’t hit a fastball in one year. He might have been nursing an injury all year.
I feel he is one of those guys that needs to get away from the crazy NY fanbase and he will give you something similar to his 2021 season at least for a couple more years.
Joe says...
Let’s hope a GM feels this way. But if you watch him play, you’ll see how slow his bat looks.
bwmiller
Tigers keep E-Rod and they’ll have a nice rotation in ’24, and the bullpen will be solid too, Cabrera off the books, Greene and Torkelson will be seasoned, they will be back.
tigerdoc616
The problem with trading E-Rod is that you would be selling low on him right now. Injured last year and then gone due to family issues does not give a team confidence he’ll come through and have a good year, and then you risk him opting into his remaining three years.
If he has a good first half, then he would be seen as a rental, but that has more value to a contending team than he would right now. Of course if you just want to unload him, might find a team willing to take on the risk if the cost isn’t too high. A couple of buckets of used BP balls and a hot dog vender TBNL would do it.
MoTownTigers
Not true. Erod’s numbers last year were exactly in line with what he’s done in his career. He’s not coming off an injury, and any competent GM is going to understand that his off field issues were very likely an aberration. He’s a lefty and proven solid starter in his prime, which will always be in demand. The market is hot right now, so there’s a good chance for a good return if they decide to trade him. His return at the deadline is not a given that it will be better with plenty of variables including his opt out which would lower his trade value. If he’s not pitching well, no one will want him, so his trade value is highest now.
1UglyFish
For the record, he was injured last season. Placed on the IL May 19 for a ribcage strain. It was during his rehab assignment at Toledo in June that he went on the restricted list.
tradepartner
I’d take Donaldson for a 1 year fill in
MPrck
Detroit is a team chock full of replaceable pieces now. Adding or not adding more replaceable pieces wont matter much. Harris an company need to get the upcoming draft right, getting a legitimate major league hitter is job one. Maybe he can move Baez or E rod, or much doubtful Schoop.
With almost 80 million for Miguel, Schoop, Baez, an Erod, there is not a lot going to happen soon. Add in starting with heavy humidor dead baseballs, no sense getting replacement level hitters either, might as well see what they’ve got now. Best bet is being a feeder for teams looking for pieces, an getting a solid return for them.
MLBtv is where the excitement is going to be for the fans. Watching Bally sports Tiger broadcast, and order little Caesar pizza is great for me. we’re all behind our baseball team, go get em Tigers !
avenger65
The only thing that will help the Tigers is bringing back Ty Cobb.
Johnny R.
Isn’t he retired?
vikingbluejay67
Sounds almost like Avilia is still running this team.

Rebuild of the rebuild.
stymeedone
So they need a contact hitter that can play 3B and OF. I hear Harold Castro is available. He’s coming off as good or better a season as either Frasier, or Anderson. As to starting pitching, Brieske, Faedo, and Wentz all have more potential than Lugo. Plus with any luck, Skubal will be available in the 2nd half. I would rather see them bring Wily Peralta back for spot starting or a swing man. If Harris was determined to just patch for this year, I don’t see why he chose to cut inexpensive players, to fill the spots with more expensive veterans with little upside.
falconsball1993
They weren’t inexpensive. They were older arbitration players with no upside, who have been mediocre for 4-5 years
BSHH
Candelario was good in 2021. And it is an open race, if Rios/Frazier/Anderson outproduce him next year or vice versa.

Solid seasons from Erod and Baez means they opt out. Miggy off the books as well and 2024 looks like a chance to spend……right Chris ??
holecamels35
This is the risk of thinking you’re set with young pitching. No one on their team made more than 17 starts last year, that’s pretty bad. Even if they pitch well, they’ll probably be limited which will put pressure on a weak bullpen. Just sign someone like Lyles or Wacha, at least they’ll make their starts.
Red Wings
Good trade for Jimenez, but nothing for this year. Starting pitching should be better if Turnbull and Boyd are OK, Skubal could be back. Maybe Meadows will decide to play this year?
The Saber-toothed Superfife
Disappointing. Sounds like the same old same, same old….no investment.
I don’t want to see them sign any long term, high dollar idiot contracts…but geez….at some point Mr. Illich has to invest in the team.
Sign tradeable contracts…geez…you know these pitchers are in demand, get some good fielders up the middle, nurse the pitchers stats and trade them
..knock down cost with signing bonuses…..
Forget opt outs and one year deals…get team extensions….
The Tigers are the employer……. if they can’t or won’t sign…WALK AWAY….YOU ARE HELPING THEM…NOT VISA VERSA…..
A BILLION GUYS WANT TO PLAY BASEALL!
Bundle.your guys for a higher return
Take on salary for.prospects….
TRADE THE KITCHEN SINK…..
The Mets and LA….need a CF……ours is.the only low.cost thing in 600 miles of NYC!
Trade Hinch, he’s still popular…
Most disappointing, they didn’t hire me….A MAN WHO CAN THINK OUT OF THE BOX!
If we are going to be the AAA team for rich teams like the Padres, the Dodgers the Yankees, the Mets…..
we might as well operate like one.
Harris should.be thinking……
What can I do to help Preller…or Cashman…or Cohen….or SOME OTHER FAN BASE, WHO ACTUALLY HAVE A HOPE OF SEEING A WINNING TEAM.
Eventually, we should.get enough trickle down…that.maybe Mike’s grandkids can give us a World Series…that is…if any of us live that long……
I might as well campout at the cleaners……
The Saber-toothed Superfife
Of course, it always nice to be surprised when they win the World Series…..
MoTownTigers
That made absolutely no sense.
Jack Buckley
White Sox have done absolutely nothing this off season, hoping this squad plays better is the thinking, Jerry Reinsdorf doesn’t give them a chance
tigerdoc616
None of this will excite Tigers fans starved for a winner. But Harris is going to focus on internal talent development to start. He has also stated he wants AB’s and IP for his young players. So signing long term deals for someone who slots into one position every day isn’t something that he is going to do. Short term deals on guys who can play multiple positions is much more likely.
The team will be better next year simply because they where as bad as they were because so many guys had career worst years. That is not likely to happen. But they are not going to contend for a playoff spot either. That will have to wait for at least another season. Despite all the hatred towards Avila, he did not leave the cupboard bare. Harris has something to work with. He just has to figure out how to get the most out of these guys.
Red Wings
The hitting was historically bad, all new batting coaches should help. If Greene and Tork rake it will make the team interesting.
Colavito
The new batting coach could be even worse than Coolbaugh….at least Coolbaugh made it to The Show. He was following Hinch’s orders…two guys who couldn’t hit and decided to mess up guys who could. The new guy barely got through a season of A ball and quit.. Miraculously a couple years later he’s a batting coach in Detroit.
Motown is My Town
Agree, as you have to believe Meadows, Baez and Schoop will have bounce back years and perform more toward their normal tendency, while Greene and Tork will improve with one year of experience. The wild cards will be Badoo, Carpenter and Kreidler, hoping they can play up to their expectations. For pitching, the Tigers showed enough depth in 22, that it should carry them in 23 and give the younger pitchers more innings/time to improve as well. Harris will use 2023 as a developmental year to understand what he has or doesn’t have to move forward. With the 3rd overall pick in the draft he’ll also be able to load up on another hitter to pair w Jung and hoping in 2024 the Tigers have the makings of a contender.
gotigers68
Well that’s cool, cuz I thought the article would say, “Tigers have no Plans”. …..
slydevil
Sounds like the tigers have peaked on their current rebuilding. Time to tear down. mike illitch would be really happy with his family who is rich because of him but likes to piss on his grave.
mumford
Scott Harris should consider Evan Longoria to sign as a free agent. Longoria plays first and third base, just what the Tigers need and Harris is familiar with him from his time with the Giants. Longoria can still hit better than anyone we now have.
MoTownTigers
Why? He’s old, expensive, and injury prone.
habs93
If reports are true…very disappointing…no upgrade on Candy and the Castro brothers….I was glad to see they were moving in, but replacing with no upside….brutal
BSHH
Usually Petzold is a well-informed beat writer (didn’t he break the Boyd and Candelario signings?). But I really wish almost all of this wasn’t true:
1.
The Tigers need a 3B and a one-year stopgap is okay for me. But I really thought Harris would be more creative than signing Rios or Anderson when he chose to non-tender Candelario and the Castros.
2.
Frazier isn’t a fit at all. The Tigers have 2B covered and enough light-hitting OFs. If Harris brings in a veteran to take away ABs from the younger player, this veteran better offer more than subpar play.
3.
Myers might be able to show a bit more, but he is not really interesting either. But how bad must the Tigers’ offer and/or reputation be, when Myers almost refuses to sign with them after his lousy platform season? And doesn’t Carpenter deserve a chance over Myers?
4.
Lugo has been a good reliever recently. But he is in his mid-30ies and wants to start. Why would the Tigers invest in such an experiment with their crop of young starters? They have enough question-marks with them already; that’s the only reason the Boyd deal made sense.
5.
Why on earth would Hinch want Schoop to play 1B? The Tigers need to develop Torkelson there. Schoop has been an almost atrocious hitter this year, but his league-leading defense at 2B redeemed him. Keep him right there!
The Tigers have lots of problems and Cabrera’s contract simply hurts (as do his regular ABs as DH). I have made my piece with 2023 being a transition year at best. But I still expect a few better ideas from Harris than this.
Gruß,

Why write a letter. Very annoying
MoTownTigers
What Petzold said makes absolutely no difference. He gets paid to write even if he has nothing to write about. He doesn’t know Harris well. I do think Harris is setting the bar low to temper expectations. If he steals someone or makes a big signing, he looks good.
What matters is what actually happens. There’s still a ton of time to make moves and all this conjecture is just silly.
Schoop will only play first if Tork is struggling and if they get a better option at second. Let’s use some thought and common sense before jumping to conclusions.
❤️ MuteButton
What about Yuli Gurriel? He can play multiple infield positions and he’s only one year removed from a gold glove and batting title.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
OK. I’ll try it………
“Beam me up, Scotty!”
Motown is My Town
Let the kids play in 2023 to let them develop as well as better understand what the Tigers have in them. Then in 24 w/ Miggy off the books and potentially Baez and ERod spend the money to plug the holes needed to be filled. Fans should be fine with this strategy provided it sets the team up for the future. Whats one more year when we’ve been through this now for 6?
MoTownTigers
That’s very simplistic. You are doing no service to the player or the team when you play a guy before he’s ready. We need to look no further than Tork last year.
tradepartner
Agree, find out about the young players. Let them play in 2023.
Next year Miggy gone and Baez and E-Rod opt out. Lots of money too spend
Colavito
Bringing on an egghead like Harris has doomed this franchise for years. He corporate-speaks in riddles and never says anything. He got rid of Reyes and the Castro boys, while not great players, proved they could stick in MLB and instead brought on a pack of nobodies. He talks about hitters “”controlling the strike zone” which is impossible…that’s a pitching term. And he signed Matt Boyd for TEN MILLION DOLLARS which is actually hilarious….the same Matt Boyd who will be on the DL by June, but smiling and talking about being back by September. Did I mention he refers to fans as “stakeholders”? He can’t decide what he thinks the dimensions of Comerica should be. All music to the ears of Ilitch who shouldn’t be anywhere near an MLB franchise and Hinch, a total fraud of a man and manager. I’ve been a Tigers fan for far too long not to see the familiar GM line…..poor craftsmanship with a different coat of paint.
