The A’s announced their signing of right-hander Drew Rucinski, making it official. In a corresponding move, lefty Zach Logue was designated for assignment.
Logue, 27 in April, was a ninth round pick of the Blue Jays in 2017 who got added to their 40-man roster after a solid 2021 season. Logue split that year between Double-A and Triple-A, making 24 starts and one relief appearance with a 3.67 ERA, 28.2% strikeout rate and 5.3% walk rate. The A’s were intrigued enough to acquire him, with Logue being one of the four players that came over in the Matt Chapman trade.
Unfortunately, 2022 didn’t go as smooth for Logue. He was able to make his MLB debut, but he posted a 6.79 ERA over 14 appearances for the A’s. He limited walks to a 7.8% clip but only struck out 16.3% of batters faced. Things didn’t go much better in the minors, as he posted an ERA of 8.12 for the Triple-A Las Vegas Aviators. That club plays in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League but park factors alone can’t completely wave away those results. He also had subpar rate stats, striking out just 15.3% of batters faced there while walking 9.9% of them.
The A’s will now have one week to trade Logue or pass him through waivers. Lackluster season aside, pitching depth is always in demand and Logue still has two option years remaining.

Ok. 1 out of 4 down in the Matt Chapman trade..

It’s kind of funny how that is the second 4 for 1 deal between the teams that ended up the same way. For the Donaldson deal they had all their hopes in Barreto, now this time all their hopes are pretty much solely in Hoglund. I hope for the A’s sake he turns out to be a very good major league pitcher.

It’s random: I hadn’t even considered the fact that these were the prospects we got from Olson or Chapman…

Agree it’s random: Jeff Samardzija
December 9, 2014: Traded by the Oakland Athletics with Michael Ynoa to the Chicago White Sox for Chris Bassitt, Josh Phegley, Rangel Ravelo and Marcus Semien.
Maybe one roll of the dice in five hits pay dirt?

Forst is one of the worse if not worse GMs in baseball. The guy always trade for long shots never for players that you know are MLB level players. Since Beane step down as GM and put Forst in control have they ever won any of the trades?
Steve Adams
Forst wasn’t in charge of baseball operations until this offseason. Even after he got promoted to GM, Beane was the executive vice president of baseball operations. He only moved into an advisory role last month, and the A’s press release made a point to highlight that Forst had baseball ops autonomy for the first time.
julyn82001
Not really sure Beane is no longer involved in the A’s operations dept. Billy is always around one way or the other…
ARC 2
Wasn’t Forst working as GM? It says he was GM of the A’s since 2015. The GM is responsible for the transactions. Seems like Beane checked out a long time ago to become a soccer team owner.

That trade was terrible. Hoglund is the only one with a chance to do something. Everyone else is AAAA
ruff kuntry
Logue was rubbish! We’ll have to wait and see what Hogland does, but that Chapman trade is not looking good so far.
jbigz12
Didn’t look good at the time either.
Gunnar Hoglund is the only real prospect of the group.
Captain Dunsel
Logue may have been rubbish but he inspired you to find your voice.

Snead sucks too,. So does smith , although he’s good defensively and hit amazing in his last month in AAA, but it was also in launching pad las vegas
ruff kuntry
Smith is terrible, and the A’s know it. That’s why they got Peterson and Díaz for 3B.
oaklandfan22
Our only hope now is Hoglund pans out

Ohtani trade incoming
The Big Yo
Chapman hasn’t been that good. Hit with anyone of the 4 we have to take it. Also A’s couldn’t pay him again anyway
ruff kuntry
They only need one to hit for that trade to be a successful one, but Hoglund the only one with any chance of doing that. Snead was disappointing and won’t provide much value even if he turns it around. Smith is terrible, and the A’s know it. That’s why they got Peterson and Díaz.

I wouldn’t mind the Blue Jays bringing Logue back on a minor league deal. He was pretty good for them in the minors before the trade. I was expecting a #4 or #5 type starter from him. Not sure what happened in Oakland. I can understand struggling in the majors, but he was terrible in AAA too. Maybe coming back to his original organization would reunite him with someone who could get him back on track.

Vegas is hard to pitch in. And when AAA is in Vegas then you go to the coliseum it’s a whole different scenario. Terrible place for A’s to have a triple A team but it’s the A’s and the Silicon Valley so they make money doing nothing all the time.

His pose in the article pic looks like he just nailed a 60yd punt!
