The Rangers on Wednesday announced that they’ve brought veteran coach Mike Maddux back for a second stint as the team’s pitching coach. The team also announced that longtime Royals general manager Dayton Moore has joined the organization as a senior advisor to the baseball operations department.
Maddux, 61, is among the game’s most experienced and respected pitching coaches. A veteran of 15 Major League seasons himself — and the older brother of Hall of Famer Greg Maddux, of course — the elder Maddux brother retired in 2000 and has served as a Major League pitching coach every year since 2003. Maddux enjoyed a six-year stint with the Brewers before spending seven years as the Rangers’ pitching coach, two as the Nationals’ pitching coach and most recently, five seasons as the Cardinals’ pitching coach.
Maddux’s return is the latest step in an organizational shakeup that saw manager Chris Woodward and longtime president of baseball operations Jon Daniels ousted over the summer. Veteran manager Bruce Bochy was recently named the new skipper in Arlington, with former big league outfielder Will Venable — who’s been fast rising through the MLB coaching ranks — brought aboard as the organization’s “associate manager.” The Rangers announced back in early October that co-pitching coaches Doug Mathis and Brendan Sagara would not return next season, and in recent days, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News had reported that Maddux was emerging as a prime candidate to reprise the role he held in Texas from 2009-15.
Turning to Moore, his appointment as a senior advisor to general manager Chris Young will give Young some valuable experience from which to draw. Young only retired as a pitcher himself following the 2017 season, and after a quick stop working in the league’s central offices, he was tabbed as the Rangers’ GM, working underneath Daniels.
That arrangement lasted fewer than three seasons, and Young is now in the midst of his first offseason as the primary baseball operations decision-maker with any organization. He’ll still have autonomy when it comes to roster decisions, of course, but Moore can speak from a place of experience while providing guidance. The pair are already familiar with one another, as Young spent the final three seasons of his 13-year Major League career pitching for Moore’s Royals.
In a situation not entirely dissimilar to the Rangers’ front office shakeup, Moore found himself relieved from his duties as Kansas City’s president of baseball operations just a few months ago. Daniels had been running baseball operations for Texas since 2005, while Moore was tabbed as Kansas City’s GM a year later, in 2006. Both were replaced by in-house general managers who were ascending to that post for the first time: Young in Texas, and longtime Moore lieutenant J.J. Picollo in Kansas City. Daniels has since been named a senior advisor to the Rays’ baseball operations department.
It’s feasible that Moore will again pursue a position of greater prominence in a different organization’s front office, but for the time being, he’ll bring more than 30 years of scouting acumen and nearly 20 years of experience running his own baseball operations outfit to the Rangers as they gear up for what’s expected to be a second consecutive aggressive offseason. Texas cannonballed into the deep end of the free-agent pool last offseason, signing Corey Seager, Marcus Semien and Jon Gray for a combined $556MM. Now, after vastly overhauling their front office and dugout leadership, they’re expected to aggressively pursue top-of-the-market starting pitching and have already been connected to the likes of Jacob deGrom, Carlos Rodon and Kodai Senga.

Let’s go!!!!
ArmChairGM-
Nice moves!
Now go get a big pitcher.
There’s no way Maddux and Bochy come to this team without some kind of assurance they will be competitive.
The Rangers will end up with two Aces before the off-season is over.

Maddux & Bochy – good combination. I think Semien turns-in an MVP quality season this year. Rangers moving in the right direction (at last).

something tells me that any veteran coach doesn’t want to coach under mo. first he fired schlidt then jeff albert and mike maddux leave. something tells me mo is getting drunk with power and it’s his way or the highway
Noah1005
…..What?
layventsky
John Mozeliak, PBO of the Cardinals, where Maddux coached before taking this job.

claude raymond
Mo? Moore? Comes from Royals? Schildt and Maddux former Cardinal coaches. So I’m a little lost regarding your post brodie-bruce. Are Larry curly and Shemp his partners?
gbs42
I’m shocked! SHOCKED! that Claude Raymond doesn’t know Mo means Mozeliak.
brodie-bruce
@claude i was referring to mozeliak, and the cards
thickiedon
I assumed Mozeliak like most that follow this page could draw the same conclusion. Welcome to the page, Claude! It’s a great site!
Holy Cow!
We can forgive Claude for this, but he should really zip his pants next time he poses for his baseball card.
claude raymond
Got it Brodie. I loved all the posts. Very funny. Im honored tho i believe some of you should ignore my stupid attempts at humor. And yes, I vaguely knew Mozeliak was with the Cardinals. My confusion was, and still is, that Moore was in the story regarding his hiring by the rangers and of course he came from KC. The reference to Mo seemed irrelevant to the rangers and Moore. I also thought StL let maddux go (fired) but he left of his own volition. Sorry Brodie, I’m obviously not knowledgeable regarding Cards. I’ll stick with Giants talk only.
claude raymond
Donny, at my age zipped or not zipped doesn’t affect the profile too much.
brodie-bruce
@claude all good man we’re only human so all of us make mistakes, i only brought up the cards because of the link of mike and most of us here in stl are sad to see him go. just like duncan mike got the most out of what he had to work with and the rangers pitching just got hella lot better where my birds took a major step back
KCMOWHOA
Moore has been named anti-wanking czar and assistant to the regional manager

Speaking of Shemp, I’m going to a 3 Stooges film festival in Glendale. this weekend. It will be like watching how The Mariners FO is being run.
gbs42
The Marlins made a couple of bad OF signings last winter, but they’ve developed a nice stable of pitchers. There certainly are worse FOs in the sport.
And ownership spending restrictions always have to be considered.
claude raymond
Ok Winslow, I plead ignorance. Outside looking in I thought Mariners were on the rise on all levels. Clue me in on FO issues you have.Or are we talking Marlins per gbs42. Damn, I’m struggling lol
gbs42
Ugh, I misread Mariners as Marlins.
The Mariners made the playoffs for the first time in two decades. That seems like progress.
claude raymond
i agree
rememberthecoop
Maybe, but I feel Maddux left cuz he knew his buddy was taking over as POBO with the Rangers and he wanted to go back to Texas. So I see this more a result of an opportunity rather than his being unhappy in STL (although it could be a coincidence I suppose).
brodie-bruce
@coop hey i don’t blame mike for leaving he is one of the best pitching coaches in the game and i wish him the best of luck in texas. something tells me he wasn’t getting along with mo and didn’t want to get fired for philosophical differences
iH8PaperStraws
They were talking on MLB Network about Maddox not seeing eye to eye with Mozalak on philosophies. So that makes a manger and a pitching coach in two years with the same issue. Jeff Albert is just a baby. Mozalak has been mostly garage ever since TLR stopped calling the shots. and as TLR’s players have cycled out, the team has been rather bland, but they are able to cover that up by being in a division where on any given year there are only two teams really trying. I believe Mozalak truely believes he is the smartest person in baseball and the best talent evaluater as well. He clearly is it. Outside of white guys over 30 who got traded to Saint Louis, no players wants to play for him and now no one with respect for the game wants to manage/coach for him. John Mozalak needs to be the one to go.
brodie-bruce
@guest678 i often don’t agree with a lot of your posts but on this one your spot on, ever since tlr left mo has tried to hire yes men and so far it “has worked”, but i think the act is wearing thin. i can say fans here are getting upset and less and less are showing up especially playoffs, here in stl we want a blend of old and new school thinking, and a staff that questions things. not this end all be all of the “new way” thinking and if you don’t agree with me your gone mentality.
btw i don’t think analytics or the “new way” is bad i just believe it’s just another tool in the box, and a nice blend of the old and new ways of thinking is the best way to build a team
iH8PaperStraws
I live in St. Louis. I get it. I had season tickets for many years and stopped buying those when he hired Matheny. Unfortunately though, there is nothijng else to do in this city so people still fill the stands. And because they play in such a bad division, they stay competitive enough to keep the casual fans. Add to that the local media are afraid to ever say anything bad about the team, even every pundit outside of the Saint Louis has the opposite opinion and the facts are staring them in the face. Especially Brad Thompson, the Cardinals roster is always full of 40 future hall of famers in his eyes.
brodie-bruce
@guest678 (bleep) man you sound like my dad (may he rip) and me, both of us were not happy about matheny he was a “yes man” then got canned then came schlidt and i thought here is a manger that blended both styles of new and old but mo canned him after taking a sub par team to a nlcs/wc when we weren’t any of those. also makes me miss bernie miklasz in the papers and the air, the man was a cards fan but was also blunt and unlike a lot of cards fans he took off the red glasses and called out the team for what they were. don’t get me wrong i love my birds but in all honesty we’re a wc team playing in a weak division, and we build our team around that. imho we should be swimming in the same pool as lad, nym, sd, atl, we’re not a “small market” team we draw well and bally (fox sports) pays the players salaries, no reason we can’t really compete but i’ll get off my soap box now just upsets me that the lot of cards fans are fine with mediocrity
the cuban solution
Has nothing to do with the Cards FO. He lives in Texas and wanted to be closer to home.
brodie-bruce
@cuban you can’t say it doesn’t have anything to do with the fo. i will give you that the rangers are closer to home, but and i’m going to be an ahole on this point, doesn’t matter where the bleep you live if you’re in pro ball of any sort your going to be away from your family 3-6 months of the year, and just physically being there doesn’t mean crap your either fully there or your not
bighiggy
So much for him wanting to take a step back to be with his family. If he wanted to leave he could have just said that lol. Also he was a great pitching coach, big loss for the cards.
iang2424
He lives in Texas so I mean it’s not like the statement is a lie. Being home and coaching for Texas makes that happen. Seen a lot of Cards fans say he wasn’t good when the FO is who acquired the pitchers for him to work with. I think he did pretty good at getting the most out of what he had to work with. That’s definitely what he did his 1st time around in Texas. I think he is open to more analytical approaches while still having an older style. Texas has been working to really blend the two approaches together.
homegrown
Moore should be the headline. Want to hear more about that one.
Rangers be making a lot of good moves staff wise…
Samuel
Not impressed with the player signings. They overdid it.
Totally impressed with the hiring of the manager, coaches, and Mr. Moore.
The AL West is overtaking the AL East as the best division in the AL.
Crab L. Winston
Results would suggest otherwise.
Holy Cow!
Hey, did you know MLB is not rotisserie league baseball?
avenger65
I would say the NL west is approaching the AL east as top division.
steven st croix
I disagree about the West, Houston is far and away the best team followed by Seattle. and everyone else is garbage.
madmanTX
Beat cheating team maybe
User 2079935927
Steven you’re obviously a Mariners fan which gives you a pass for not knowing what you’re talking about.
Samuel
steven st croix;
Reading comprehension…..
“…is overtaking…”.
Now.
Watch.
drtymike0509
Last I checked the A’s still were in the west. The east teams are all better than them. Both divisions are top heavy and even, in my book, but the red sox and the O’s are way better than the Athletics are even thinking about being at this point
lady1959
What signings have they done this off season you referring to?⚾️
Samuel
lady1959;
What signings have they done this off season?
Bledcam
I’m unsure how to feel about Dayton Moore. Anyone want to give me some insight on that move? I obviously know about that one thing he was doing and thought that was odd.
Absolutely ecstatic about Maddux being back!
Grantastic
He’ll establish anti-masturbatory measures, bring his bible to work, and ensure the Rangers players are good husbands and fathers.
Don’t let him touch the roster though – he’ll bury the org into decades of losing.
I mean, these are the things he did in KC. Literally everyone affiliated with the Royals org wanted him gone. Fans as well.
And he was “shocked” he got canned? Dude cannot read the writing on the wall.
Insufferable narcissist whom lacks the ability to reflect.
Yeah, good luck with that.
If CY wants to keep his job, he’ll do nothing Deacon Moore suggests.
saluelthpops
Back to back WS, including winning one. He built those rosters too. How did that not make it into your commentary? Baffling.
Grantastic
That’s how ill willed most fans are. A title in back to back trips doesn’t outweigh 14 years of sucktitude. Moore is a wanker.
saluelthpops
I didn’t say it outweighed it. But to not even mention it just shows you have a a narcissistic agenda that doesn’t take even obvious things into account. Interested to hear what Moore did to you. It’s personal for you and there has to be more to the story.
saluelthpops
Aha. I see the pattern now. You’re just angry. You should relax some. It’s just a message thread about a front office guy. Sheesh.
Edp007
Still think Judge fits like a glove in this lineup.
Bash boom yeah
Rocker49
Would be nice, but since winning WS titles is his goal not sure the Rangers are the team for him.
Edp007
Rangers will spend. This year , next and every year , while pitchers develop along with FA’s.
I think the Rangers will be a force soon.
They can sell an attractive scenario to Judge imo. Money , buy pitchers , ballpark , veteran smart FO and manager and coaching staff. commitment to spend , protection behind Judge, lots of ribbies in front. Monster stats possible.
In Texas you go big or you go home , no?
brodie-bruce
yes go big or go home but it’s also about spending your money wisely, perfect examples are the laa and the phils before dd took over, hell i still remember the phil’s owner saying we’re going to spend stupid money.
oldredgunslinger
Let me guess…a Dodgers fan??

Man, hate to see Mike leave the Redbirds it I am pleased he is coming to Texas.

Wait… associate manager?? Is this Assistant to the Regional Manager stuff going on? Dwight Schrute running things out there?
Bledcam
Haha. The Rangers team before they take the field for the World Series in 2024: “We must never cede control of the motherland! For it is together that we prevail!”
nottinghamforest13
Dayton Moore is a man of faith which will bring great success to the organization.
Grantastic
Right. Cuz 14 losing seasons out of 17 years at the helm is success.
GTFO here with this garbage take.
