This had to be one of the harder chats for the simple fact that you basically have to say “no” to almost every scenario that involves the Guardians spending money.
Lots of people asking about Abreu but he’s probably too expensive. JD Martinez, even after a bad year probably gets over $10 mil for a year. Carlos Santana or maybe Nelson Cruz can maybe be had for whatever little Cleveland is willing to spend

I’d love to think Naylor could hold down 1B or DH. Hopefully an internal option presents itself. #sufferfortribe #sufferforsnakes

As a Phillies fan, am always pissed when a high draftpick flames out….which up until a couple years ago was pretty much 9/10. It sets the whole organization back, but I understand for Cleveland, who does hit on a lot of selections…it is so much more devastating….
Kudos to the scouting dept etc….

Nelson Cruz might not be a bad bet and would probably actually be feasible for the Guardians. Had a long track record of success before his down year and got eye surgery after the season.

Rsox;
Why is it so bad to do a chat about the Guardians because they don’t spend a lot of money? Should they also stop doing chats for the ever-contending Rays? How about the A’s? Royals? Pirates? Brewers? Orioles?
Why in heavens name would the Guardians want to take away PA’s from a group of exciting young hitters and give them to Jose Abreu, JD Martinez, Carlos Santana or maybe Nelson Cruz – I don’t find that exciting at all. Cleveland may even sign one of them. And by the end of June fans will be asking why they wasted that money and why can’t the non-starters DH.
I find it boring every off-season to watch fans get excited about monied teams bringing in past-their-prime players whose previous teams want no part of them. Maybe if you have a crummy farm system and don’t know how to coach your players up at the minor and major league level this is exciting – look at that Yankees roster…especially without Judge. Wow!
I love watching the small market teams build. Heck, I loved watching the Phillies develop this season: Stott, Bohm, Schwarber, Stubbs, Maton, Castellanos, Vierling, Hoskins, Sosa, Guthrie, Marsh…and those are just the position players. All improved aspects of their game as the season went on. Almost all that were acquired were met on here with distain in the comments. All the LOL comments about the teams defense and awful bullpen. Then – magically – they all “got hot”. Wow.
Well, maybe some of the small market teams will “get hot” this year. Just show up and “get hot”. Just a random thing – “get hot”.

I’m not saying don’t do the chats but it has to be tough for Mark or any of the others to have to essentially answer every question the same. Pirates, Rays, A’s, those chats will all mirror this one in the fact that the fan base would like to be able to throw out a question of if the team will sign player x or y and the answer being “the money is probably out of the team’s comfort zone” or just straight “no”.
I commend Mark and the others for doing these chats knowing they are going to have to be the cold shower of reality in many of them

This is a MLB rumor message board. It ain’t that serious. Calm down son.
