Mets’ starter Chris Bassitt is expected to decline his $19MM mutual option per Jon Heyman of the NY Post. Bassitt will receive a $150K buyout and head to free agency for the first time in his career.
Following a trade from the Athletics, Bassitt agreed to a one-year, $8.65MM contract with a $19MM mutual option for the 2023 season ($150K buyout if either team declined) in his final trip through the arbitration process. During his first season with New York, the 8-year veteran led the Mets in starts (30) and innings pitched (181 2/3) while pitching to a 3.42 ERA with a 22.4% strikeout rate, 6.6% walk rate, and a 49.1% groundball rate.
Bassitt, who will be 34 on Opening Day, has been a reliable pitcher over the last four seasons. Since 2019, he has made at least 27 starts (excluding the 2020 season) paired with a 3.31 ERA in 546 innings, a 23.2% strikeout rate, a 6.7% walk rate, and a 44.1% groundball rate.
On the heels of a strong season, the Mets will likely attach a Qualifying Offer to Bassitt (a one-year, $19.65MM contract). While this sum is more than double what Bassitt was paid in 2022, he will likely opt to find a longer contract with an annual salary similar to the value of the QO.
As for the Mets, they enter the 2022-23 offseason with big questions surrounding their rotation. Two-time Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom and former All-Star Taijuan Walker both hold player options that they are expected to decline, and the Mets hold a $14MM club option on Carlos Carrasco’s 2023 services that they must make a decision on in the next few days. Tylor Megill is a candidate to fill one of the spots in the rotation, but owner Steve Cohen will likely open his wallet again this offseason to buff his team’s starting pitching.

Three year, $65 million? Four year, $80 million? He’ll be 34 next year, likely his last shot at a big deal.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
I would be hesitant on that
slider32
Bassitt was the Mets best pitcher when Scherzer and deGrom were out,he tailed off near the end of the season. Mets might bring him back, they lost Carrasco, Walker, deGrom, and him. Mets will be in a battle with the Dodgers for the top pitchers.
SalaryCapMyth
His second half ERA was 2.94
His last month ERA was 3.78 but was still better than his May or June.
Chris G.
Carrasco is not gone, they’ll pick up his option. It has a $3 mill buyout so it’ll only cost $11 mill for one year.
JackStrawb
@Chris G. I wonder. Any decent projection system puts Carrasco with an ERA around 4.20 in 20 starts for that $11m. Wouldn’t you rather have Walker for, say, 3/$33m? If the Mets treat him like the 105 inning pitcher Walker is, they might even get a sub-3.00 ERA from him.
Scherzer and Walker could both use a 6-man rotation., With Megill and Peterson and Lucchesi on board, plus at least 2 and probably 3 new additions for the rotations, the Mets would be in good shape to give their guys 5 days rest for most of the year.
Chris G.
I would prefer Walker but I’ve seen projections for him as high as 5 years $75-80 mil. With there being up to 4 open rotation spots I think it would be savvy to bring Cookie back since it’s 100% in the hands of the FO. There’s no telling how Walker’s market will develop. Obviously there will be more additions and Walker could still come back as well. But $11 mil is cheap for a veteran starter. FanGraphs has his 2022 season valued at $19 mil. Solidifying that 2nd rotation spot early gives us a little more breathing room.
BaseballisLife
Hes 34 and not a consistent top performer. I don’t think he will get more than $19 million AAV. But he will get much more than that on a multi-year deal.
3/54 would be my guess. Maybe 4/66
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
Carrasco had a strikeout rate that makes him worth it. 19 million is steep though
JackStrawb
3/54m seems likely . If a team goes to 4/64m they’re surely going to have to be figuring the last season as a throwaway.
sjwil1
you seem a bit high…3/50 is more like it

A very good pitcher, but it must be agony for the infielders. The guy takes FOR EVER to throw his pitch.
LordD99
That’s a potential concern. How will pitchers like Bassitt react to the pitch clock?
Fred McGriff HR
Not next year, unless he wants ‘ball’ called on him.
DarkSide830
Honesty I would rather stay away from QO guys.
LordD99
Intrigue.
But expected.

He declined 19 mil to go play for the Pirates.
Hello, Newman
Time to bring him home Tigers!
bighiggy
Will he get 19m aav? That’s alot to walk away from? I know something like 60 over 4 is more, but still. Alot of good pitchers on the Market who may not get 19aav
BashBroJoe
Looking for years. It’s probably his last chance at a multi year deal.
JackStrawb
Right. It’s all about the guaranteed money at this point in his career. People are neglecting that wrt deGrom. If he gets 3/60m plus significant incentives, that’s a big improvement on the 1/30.5m he was in line for before his opt-out.
padam
It’s the years. His age for first time free agency doesn’t help, and will probably be his last attempt to lock into anything with years. 4 years and somewhere between 60-80 would be the range IMHO. I see the Giants being a solid location for his skills if the Mets don’t attempt to resign him. Quite possibly the Angels as well if a sale doesn’t interfere.
Pete'sView
Perhaps, but I repeat what I said earlier, I’ll bet he can be agony for infielders Most Giant pitchers work pretty fast. Bsassitt would be the most extreme in the other direction. As good as he is, I find it hard to watch his starts. And what will happen next year when he won’t be allowed to take anything close to what he’s doing now? How will that mess up his pitching?
JackStrawb
Bassitt also declined meaningfully versus 2021 and should never have been pushed to 181 innings. The Mets FO’s inability to figure this out, or figure out not to push Carrasco, and not push Walker, had everything to do with losing the division.
LordD99
He’s not walking away from 19M if he signs a 4/70. What’s wrong with you people? : -)
metzfan
metzfan agreed. Also, fyi
“a lot” is 2 words.

So glad you go around looking for grammatical errors. What would we ever do without you, geesh

I can see him or Walker signing with the Padres.
amk1920
I don’t see what all the hype is about with Bassitt. His stuff is not good and clearly not built for big games. 19 million for a guy to fill out the rotation? No thanks
Hello, Newman
His stuff isn’t good, and he is over hyped?
DaOldDerbyBastard
Compared to who? Did you see him pitch this year?
VonPurpleHayes
His numbers are good and he’s consistent. One of the better #2-3 options out there.
amk1920
In getting you through a regular season? Maybe. Not in big games when seasons are on the line and hitters buckle down. Braves and Padres demolished him.
Hello, Newman
He gave up 3 in 4 ip., Mets had 1 hit-1 bb in that game. No pitcher wins that game.
Career 4.20 postseason.
VonPurpleHayes
That happened this year. Not exactly enough to say it’s a pattern. Verlander stunk in the World Series until he didn’t. I’d still take Verlander.
Flyby
How many teams are looking to their number 3 pitcher when the season is on the line outside of the playoffs? Playoffs are crapshoots.
How about goin 5 for 36 in the playoffs are you going to take someone like that? damn aaron judge may have to beg for a minor league deal because he cant buckle down.
How about 8 runs in 8 innings in the world series. That damn aaron nola just cant buckle down in the big games … time to put him as a low leverage reliever if not the minors.
One series does not define a players career. Bassitt is pretty consistent usually finishing the 6th every game giving you quality game after quality game. That is definitely worth it in my opinion. For pitchers like that are probably going for around 18-20 million per year its just how long you think he will do it at 34.
Kruk's Beer League
I actually hope the Phillies make a run at Verlander.
JoeBrady
Basically, a groundball single scored two runs. His PS peripherals are nearly identical to his regular season peripherals.
JackStrawb
Well, definitely a #3 at this point in his career. A good one, but still a #3.
HalosHeavenJJ
Considering he’s likely looking at a 3 possibility 4 year deal he’ll have a lot of suitors.
Robrock30
LOL The $ 19 MM Option makes no sense. He receives the $ 150 K Buyout and the QO is Greater than $ 19 MM. He plans to reject the QO and test FA Value where he should secure a multi- year deal far in excess of $ 19.65 Total Value. This is a no Brainer for him as what he should be doing. The pitch clock will be an issue with him who had difficulty working with the Catchers on Pitch Selection.
10centBeerNight
NYM philosophy this off-season will be very interesting to watch. Team has to get younger and has the emerging talent. But just don’t know if Baty, Vientos, Alvarez will become cornerstone players. How Atlanta has struck gold with so much homegrown talent is extraordinary and not often repeated. Hunch is NYM will both throw down in FA and also package some talent (Vientos?) and find a taker for the McCann type contacts by covering most of it
JackStrawb
@10centBeerNight Great username, btw. –You’re not dealing away McCann. Why would you? He has 3 options, you don’t need the money, you can send him down, and Alvarez is far from ready in any case. On a 26-man roster you can also afford to carry 3 catchers if the need arises, particularly with Alvarez’s bat as you don’t need a DH at that point. Besides, if you sent McCann away, you’d pick up $16m of his remaining $20m and not give up one of your better prospects, such as they are.
Baty’s fielding has never really improved and he averages 30+ errors over a full season. Vientos is actually worse. Both will be JD Davis types in the field: at best emergency platoon 3Bman, 6th Ofers who can only play LF, DH’s, and PH’s. As for Mauricio, his OBP is stalled at .300 and he can’t field, either. Other than Alvarez the Mets are going to be severely disappointed in their current farm system.
I suppose it’s possible Baty can figure out to become a -5 LFer who hits enough to give them 2+ WAR in his best seasons, but that’s just a guy you carry because you can’t afford to go shopping at every position.
resident
Was there anything going on with Dom Smith this past season to help explain the year he had? Personal? Emotional? Physical? Attitude? Psychological? Desire?
Robrock30
He’s a slug who was depressed that he wasn’t a Starting Full Time Player. LOL
JackStrawb
@resident Never heard anything beyond he was hurt at some point, somewhere, about something. Did he never accept that he was actually a worse fielder by most defensive numbers than Alonso, or that even if they were comparable the guy who hit 53 homers as a rookie gets some say in the decision?
I don’t think he ever grasped that he had put up all of 1 season of 6 where, given his bad defense, he was actually worth a lineup slot, and even then it was just 199 PA. This season even his good stretches on the MLB squad didn’t get over .700 OPS for more than a few days. What was there to sulk about, really?

3/65 to the Rangers they love spending money like drunken sailors…
bryan c
Very solid pitcher and will easily get 3 or 4 years at or around $20M per or better in the market we have. The flaw is his ability to get on the same page with a catcher. Constant shakes and frustration. With a pitch clock coming, this will be interesting with him. He needs to put in the work with his catchers in the spring wherever he goes.
SalaryCapMyth
Did Basset piss in your cheerios or something? His ERA this season was pegged as 13% better than league average and he stays reasonably healthy. Additionally, I can’t figure out what you are seeing that indicates to you that anyone is hyping Bassit. He’s a strong no.3 or a decent no. 2 when I look at his last three seasons of production.
As for your issue with his ability to pitch in big moments, I mean maybe. You must be thinking of his performance against the Padres. He really hasnt pitched than much in the playoffs.
BuyBuyMets
Perhaps he’s also referring to the Braves eating Bassitt’s lunch a week before, with the Division on the l8nrm
JackStrawb
A “decent #2”?? I’d love to see a postseason rotation that could be remotely confident or likely to win w/ Bassitt as its #2. Bad in 4 of his last 8 starts in his first season over 158 innings—that’s not even a decent #2 on a good team.
angt222
No surprise here.
