Twelve of the 14 players who received qualifying offers have rejected those one-year, $19.65MM contracts in favor of testing the open market, tweets Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. Martin Perez and Joc Pederson are the only two who accepted a QO. Each of Aaron Judge, Trea Turner, Xander Bogaerts, Dansby Swanson, Jacob deGrom, Carlos Rodon, Brandon Nimmo, Willson Contreras, Anthony Rizzo, Chris Bassitt, Nathan Eovaldi and Tyler Anderson have rejected the deal. Anderson is already in agreement on a three-year contract with the Angels.
None of the news is all that surprising, aside from perhaps Anderson’s early multi-year strike with the Halos. Perez and Pederson were two of the three most likely candidates to take the QO. That the Giants tagged Pederson at all was a move few saw coming, and most believed he’d indeed take the QO once it was put forth.
None of Judge, Turner, Bogaerts, Swanson, deGrom, Rodon, Nimmo, Bassitt or Contreras likely gave much thought to the possibility. Eovaldi and Rizzo were more borderline candidates, but the latter quickly returns to the Yankees on a multi-year deal that’ll pay him around the QO rate over two guaranteed seasons. Eovaldi has yet to sign, but he’ll presumably continue to search for a longer-term contract after taking advantage of the five days to scour the market.
The clubs that saw a free agent decline a qualifying offer now stand to receive draft compensation if that player signs elsewhere. The value of the compensatory pick depends on a team’s status as a revenue sharing recipient and/or whether they paid the luxury tax in 2022. That’s also true of the draft choices and potentially international signing bonus space a team would have to forfeit to sign a qualified free agent from another team.
MLBTR’s Tim Dierkes broke down the forfeiture each team would have to surrender to sign a qualified free agent earlier this month. MLBTR’s Mark Polishuk looked at the compensation each club would receive if one of these players signed elsewhere.

Xander and Judge to the Pirates. They’ve been saving 45 years for this moment.
Rick Pernell
Even with those two pick-ups, Pittsburgh could still manage to lose 75 games. Why fix what is already broke?
PiratesFan1981
Take it easy on my Pirates. Not everything is a bed of roses. Consistent reminder of how broken this organization is, is painful to bare. If you can kindly call Roger Goodell for us Pirates fans and request that he strips Bob Nutting of ownership. At this point, us Pirates fans are tired of this “thrift store” run organization.
blackandorange
Roger…Roger Goodell? I think I know why your complaints aren’t being heard.
claude raymond
Maybe Bill Cowher could manage the pirates.
thecoffinnail
Not Bill!! The Pirates are going to bring back the player/manager next year. I have heard Jerome Bettis is on their short list.
PiratesFan1981
Good one, got me.

Judge going to SF if he don’t resign with Yankees
thecoffinnail
I hope you are right. I hope they approach him the same way they did with Cano. He will be MLB’s most expensive part time DH in 4-5 years. Wouldn’t mind an eye popping record breaking AAV for him if he would sign for less years. A contract that compares to Michael Jordan’s last year with the Bulls compared to the rest of the NBA back then. The 9/$320m that is predicted by some talking heads will be awful sooner rather than later. Players his size don’t age well. Giancarlo is a good example of how well that big body will hold up after 10 years of pro ball.
YourDreamGM
Pirates aren’t interested in aging declining over paid players.
flamingbagofpoop
Well done.

Wonder if anyone of them is going to be this year’s Conforto. Boras really advised well on that one.
gbs42
No, no one will be this year’s Conforto. Sucks for him, but it’s not like Boras hasn’t earned his reputation for getting top dollar.
myaccount2
It didn’t help that he also chose to get surgery.

Perez and Joc being offered qualifying offers at their age and performances was kind of ridiculous. They would be absolutely insane not to accept these deals. Think joc highest career aav would have to get a 2 year deal with a buyout match to match this one year deal, where Perez would have to sign like a 5 year deal with his previous yearly high to match. Neither guy was really expected to make crazy money this offseason, so take the money, both will likely sign next offseason for the values they’ve already been collecting
Redwolves3
Now that Joc “Baby Panda” has accepted the QO he better begin immediately getting in shape for the 2023 season.
yewed
If Perez pitches like he did last season, Texas may lock him up before next offseason.
solaris602
Predicting Bassitt is next to sign……most likely with BAL. Going out on a limb here.
Edp007
That would be very good move for mlb. O’s moving up

Bassitt to Baltimore sweet. That said, there’s speculation they’re looking for 2 starters? He’s a 2, right? Pretty expensive. If they get him, can Os afford a 2nd?
Ra
Forfeiting the ~ #67 pick to sign Bassitt or Eovaldi seems out of character for Elias. Rodon maybe. But he could keep the pick and sign Thor and Taijuan. Or even Quintana and Taillon/Manaea. Not sure that is a significant drop off compared to losing the pick

Things that are impossible to fix for a $1000 Alex. (Alex played by Will Farrell)
GreenMonsta
I thought Eovoldi would take QO, try to reestablish his value and hit FA next year without QO attached.
yewed
Eovaldi already has a multi year deal on the table.
billybilly
I find it hard to believe the Sox are offering a real multi year deal. If anything, the talk of a multi year deal was to help promote the idea of rejecting the QO to all but guarantee draft picks. Sox will need those picks to help balance what they will lose by signing other QO rejectors.
yewed
I hope you’re right. I for one want to be done with the guy. Sox love him, though.
Problem is that the draft picks they’ll get won’t be as good since they were over the CBT. Could be Sox way of kind of forcing Eovaldi into taking less money if he doesn’t get any offers he likes. I don’t see them going after any of the big name pitchers and spending money that way.
I have a bad feeling either way.
GreatHersh
Pederson missed the playoffs for the first time, and he was pretty good when he was in them. Confusing why he would want to stay with a losing team after being with the Dodgers then Braves.
Shrutefarm
I can think of 19 million reasons.

Maybe those 107 wins in 2021 made him think they could be a winning team in 2023.

Don’t worry Guys and girls Chaim Bloom is going to save us and bring us back. Hey Chaim, in Tampa Bay you rode the shirt tails of Andrew Friedman. You have a lot of work to do and have a real bad habit of going cheap and lowballing players. This guy is like the last one at the buffet table after everyone has taken their food and is eating. I hope but he is a real long shot with the work ahead of him.
JoeBrady
So, did you have a comment on the article?
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
Can somebody explain the logic of the Giants extending a QO to Pederson? Did they really think he wasn’t going to accept it ??? I just don’t understand the cost/benefit analysis on this one.
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Kudos to Pedersen and his newly found wealth. That’s a lot of cheese for a guy who can’t hit LHP. Dunno. I would think for that money they could get a pretty good everyday player. But, heh, it ain’t my money.
Whatever, Giants have a lot of work to do this off-season. Many holes to fill, but they have the money to get it done.
Gonna need to do that rebuild because, right now, I rate them #4 in the NL West behind LA, SD and an improving D-Backs team.
