The Giants entered the 2022 campaign with high hopes after winning 107 games last year, but the team’s efforts to compete for a playoff spot fell short. San Francisco finished with a .500 record and now turns its attention to next season. There’s no question the Giants will attempt to reload and make another push for contention this winter.
San Francisco president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi met with the media this afternoon to discuss the team’s goals for the upcoming offseason (links via Evan Webeck of the Bay Area News Group and John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle). Zaidi indicated the club would bolster its starting rotation, which could see the departure of ace Carlos Rodón. The star southpaw signed a two-year guarantee last offseason, but he triggered an opt out provision in the deal by exceeding 110 innings this summer.
There’s no question Rodón will bypass the second season of that contract, as he and his representatives at the Boras Corporation are going to search for a longer-term deal. The 29-year-old avoided the injured list and threw 178 innings of 2.88 ERA ball, striking batters out at an elite 33.4% clip. He’s sure to pick up some Cy Young votes for a second straight season and could top the $110MM – $115MM guarantees secured by the likes of Robbie Ray and Kevin Gausman last winter.
Zaidi noted he “fully expects” Rodón to opt out but again suggested there’s mutual interest in keeping him in the Bay Area. “I’m sure we’re going to be talking to Scott Boras about bringing him back. The feedback from Carlos and from Scott is he enjoyed being here, he enjoyed pitching in our park,” the Giants president told reporters. Locking up Rodón this time around would certainly require the largest investment the club has made in a free agent hurler since Zaidi took over. San Francisco hasn’t gone beyond the $44MM guarantee they awarded Rodón last winter for any pitcher during his leadership tenure. Anthony DeSclafani, who signed a three-year, $36MM deal last offseason, is the only pitcher to whom this front office has guaranteed three years.
On the issue of contract length, Zaidi indicated he wouldn’t categorically rule out a long-term investment. He generally indicated the front office expects to have some leeway from ownership regarding payroll. If Rodón doesn’t return, then San Francisco is likely to bring in another rotation piece from the outside. “I would anticipate us being in the market for at least one starter. Maybe it is just one. But at least one.”
That pitcher would join Logan Webb, Alex Wood, Alex Cobb and DeSclafani in the season-opening starting five. Webb had a second consecutive very strong season and looks like a top-end starter. Wood and Cobb each look like above-average starters at their best, and Cobb in particular is coming off a strong first year in SF. Each of Wood and Cobb has had a litany of injuries throughout their careers, however, while DeSclafani was limited to just five appearances in 2022 by an ankle injury that necessitated surgery.
San Francisco got solid fill-in work from right-hander Jakob Junis, who took on a larger than expected role in the wake of DeSclafani’s injury. Over 23 appearances (17 starts), Junis posted a 4.42 ERA with a 20.5% strikeout rate and a tiny 5.2% walk percentage. That earned him a spot on next year’s roster for his final season of arbitration eligibility, but Zaidi said today the club prefers him in a long relief role. While he’d certainly be capable of stepping back into the rotation if needed, he won’t be given that job out of the gate.
One pitcher whom Zaidi suggested could get an early rotation look is top prospect Kyle Harrison. The 21-year-old southpaw pitched to a 2.71 ERA with an incredible 39.8% strikeout rate in 113 frames split between High-A and Double-A. Along the way, he cemented himself as one of the most promising minor league arms in the sport. The former third-rounder did walk a higher than ideal 10.5% of opponents, but he’s shown plenty of promise with regards to missing bats. While Harrison doesn’t have to be added to the 40-man roster until the end of the 2023 campaign, Zaidi name-checked him as a potential rotation option “relatively early in the season.” He’s not likely to break camp with the team but could be an option midseason if he shows well in the upper minors.
On the position player side, the Giants have made clear they plan to get younger and look for more athletic players capable of improving a defense that was MLB’s third-worst at turning balls in play into outs. That’d seem to point towards parting ways with the corner infield tandem of Brandon Belt and Evan Longoria. Belt is an impending free agent, while the Giants hold a $13MM option on Longoria’s services versus a $5MM buyout.
Zaidi kept the window open today to retaining both players. He suggested Longoria, in particular, could benefit from a reduced role that didn’t require playing the vast majority of games at third base. While Zaidi didn’t specifically address the option decision, it’s hard to envision San Francisco bringing Longoria back at that price — particularly after they re-signed Wilmer Flores to a two-year deal last month. Still, it seems the front office is open to the possibility of keeping him around on a lower-cost deal in free agency on the heels of a .244/.315/.451 showing across 89 games.
Amidst what’s likely to be a fair bit of roster turnover, Zaidi also plans to tab a new top lieutenant. Previous general manager Scott Harris departed to take over baseball operations with the Tigers. San Francisco has proceeded without a GM for the past few weeks, but Zaidi said today that finding a replacement for Harris is a priority. He expressed his hope a new GM hire will be finalized by the General Manager’s meetings, which typically take place in mid-November. Zaidi will retain overall control of the roster, but the new GM will be his second-in-command and a pivotal piece of the front office.
.
So Zaidi and A. Freeman, what is the distinct difference between their roles vs the role of GM?
Domingo111
President of baseball ops is a made up title due to legal reasons.
There is a rule that teams can’t poach front office personnel unless they promote them to a higher position.
That lead to kind of a title inflation because teams would poach assistant GMs and make them “GMs” under a president of baseball ops (I’m using POBO as an acronym later here for symplicity).
So if there is a POBO and a GM that basically means the POBO is the GM and the GM is an assistant GM.
.
Domingo, that was just perfect…Appreciate it thank you!
LordD99
Correct. Another advantage is the PoBO adds another high visibility exec who can be fired when things go wrong, perhaps saving himself for at least another cycle!
Yankee Clipper
Great news for Yankees fans he didn’t mention a RF on his agenda…
Braves Butt-Head
IMO about 20 teams should be in on Judge. You hit 62 and have a 10+ WAR you are goinf to have suitors. Be prepped for the Yankees to pay over 40+ mil AAV for 8 to 12 years.
A'sfaninUK
Dodgers and Padres going after Judge, 100%. No shot he’d sign with SF who arent going to clear either LA+SD for like a decade.
jalora
Judge did grow up a Giants fan.
YankeesBleacherCreature
That’s bc they’re targeting a CFer who can play RF… for versatility.

Mr. Zaidi’s rep skyrocketed in 2021, then crashed this year. Not sure I’ve ever seen this trajectory in a new Baseball Ops head.
I had great hopes for him. But it’s not the 2022 crash so much as I’m wondering where all the players from his highly touted farm system are.
zeltrox
How did it crash? Amid injuries, he still built a .500 team, which is better than half the teams.
Baseball77
zeltrox – Injuries weren’t the problem. Sure, they had guys on the IL, some of them multiple times but most weren’t on the IL long and many of the guys who were on it for awhile were either in the minor leagues or already poorly performing.
In my opinion, the 2022 team crashed due to age, multiple players having career years in 2021, only to go back to expected performances in 2022 and Posey retiring.

Giants better trade some prospects to get Sandy Alcantara
Pete'sView
Miami is NOT trading Alcantara, and the Giants don’t have (after the 2022 season) enough top prospects for the Marlins anyway.
Braves Butt-Head
My rule of thumb with Pitchers always sell while the value is highest because of the injury risks pitchers have. The Marlins are not anywhere close unless they spend on the offense and they arent because they do about 10000 people a game. So that means they need to get offensive prospects. And Alcantra the next NL CY Young winner will have perhaps the best value for any pitcher im baseball.
.
Tony Gonsolin coming back strong next year! He will fight hard for the CY! That guy is going to blow people away next year. In every respect.
.
Up till he went on the IL this year the CY was his to lose..
Braves Butt-Head
Spencer Strider if he can stay healthy which I say about any pitcher is my early 2023 pick personally. He had over 200k in only 130 IP with a sub 3 ERA. Hes gonna develop his change up more in the offseason and maybe develop a 4th pitch in Spring training and he will be a starter to start a season and go deeper in games.
A'sfaninUK
I agree the Marlins best move is to trade Alcantara, but the Giants straight up do not have the firepower to get him, like 10 other teams including the Dodgers will simply outbid them.
.
Adell,Suarez, and whoever else you want for Alacantra.
SamtheMan!
That’s not even true the Giants have a strong farm.
Luciano & Harrison could headline a package if the Marlins decided to go that way.
Pete'sView
Braves Butt-Head — Alcantra is probably in the top 5 (maybe top 3) pitchers any team would want to have. And every team will be in on him IF he’s available, which is doubtful.
My point is only that at least 25 of the 30 teams will be waving top prospects and major leaguers at the Marlins IF they’re ready to go all in.
Pete'sView
I’d say the Giants have more than those two, but last year’s crop did take a step back. SF still has a pretty good farm, but may be back a few years since many of their best prospects are in AA.
Jean Matrac
In general, every team in baseball has enough to acquire Alcantara. It’s just that the teams with lower ranked farms, don’t have a lot of depth, and trading what it would take would totally deplete their system.
I say in general, because every team has their own database with player rankings, so we don’t really know how the Marlins feel about certain team’s players. And it would also depend on whether the Marlins wanted MLB-ready guys, or guys whose time-table was farther away. But every team does have multiple good prospects, that the Marlins might be willing to take in a return.

Farhan. Interesting cat. He comes across as a “his own dude” personality. Seems to be less of a 5 year plan GM type and instead looks at each new season differently based on need. I like that he passes/lets go pitchers seeking long term deals. And that he acknowledges the need to get younger filling position player positions. I’ll follow SF more intently this off season.
angt222
I have a feeling SF is going to target Bassitt.
Braves Butt-Head
Angela Bassitt is a good actress
Cat Mando
“Angela Bassitt is a good actress” and at 64 years old I think her playing days are behind her.
padam
He’s their type of player. Been around, wrong side of 30 but will get the most out of the player. SF is my guess for his destination.
Balk
This is going to get interesting this off-season. Fans are anxious to see some big signings, if it’s another non competitive year for this team, that ballpark will look like Miami’s next year.
xtraflamy
Doubt it. Will they sell out games like they did in the ‘10s? No. But it’s a fun experience win or lose. Great ballpark. Good food. Expensive, but if you have the $ (and a lot of locals do) it can be a great night out.
Balk
You can have that opinion, I’ve lived there in the Central Valley up until 2020, numbers are already way down. Keep popping out mediocre signings, you’ll see it get worse. Fans know the market, and they have one of the richest owners in the sport. No reason for it.
puigpower
I don’t understand why the Giants run their club like they’re a small-market team. They’re not.
scottn59c
Don’t be a tunahead. If you were a Dodgers fan in the Puig era, then you are more than familiar with Zaidi’s MO. He was brought in to help the Giants build a roster when they were saddled with all kinds of contractual baggage from ‘”thank you” contracts doled out to aging vets (by the previous Evans administration).
Much like he did with guys like Max Muncy and Justin Turner, Zaidi made moves to supplement an outperforming core of vets last year, and fate went his way. It didn’t this year, but the nature of a good VP or GM is that they reevaluate and make moves based on the future rather than the immediate present. Sometimes, that means treading water until the farm and the club are poised to make a run.
Any fool can spend money; it takes a plan and some discipline to build a perennial contender; if you’re a Dodgers fan, you should know.
A'sfaninUK
Zaidi does not have what it takes to do anything but Moneyball lite. You’ll see it eventually. He’s not the right guy for SF, who need a guy who knows which long term superstars to lock down.
A'sfaninUK
Nope, homers who refuse to look at a .654 OPS at AAA and still think they have a “stacked farm” are too stupid to actually form an authentic thought by themselves.
zeltrox
100% this. We were in a terrible place, now we have 130m to spend and a respectable farm, all while building up the supporting pieces for the superstars. The farm is also starting to produce, and already gave us 2 good players this season. We had to tread water for a while, but now we can compete
sarunas
Good post Scott. You nailed it.
Samuel
Scottn59c;
I stand by what I wrote above.
Where’s the core? I realize it’s not out there firing on all cylinders…..but name me some guys. Are Bart, Yastrzemski, and Flores part of the core? If not, who is? When does tomorrow become today?
–
“Our fans expect a winning team, which we didn’t deliver this year,” Zaidi said. “We have to go back to the drawing board and explore every channel to get better. I expect us to be really active this offseason. We do have the flexibility to be involved in every possible option on the table, but our goal is when we get to Spring Training and Opening Day hits in 2023, we feel like we’ve got a playoff-caliber team out on the field. That’s going to drive everything we do this offseason.”
–
The man is saying there IS NO core. He’s going to buy one.
That’s a sign of desperation and never works for long.
scottn59c
Samuel, you tendered a thoughtful disagreement, and I can appreciate your position.
There’s definitely a core that’s coming into place. Bart, as you mentioned, should be part of it for a long time to come. I think it’s safe to say that he proved that he has a bright MLB future ahead of him, even if he’s never going to reach the lofty heights of Posey. More importantly, though, what happened with him speaks to the need to not write off the fledglings in the farm. Even if some of this year’s players had down years or time lost to injury, that doesn’t just obliterate their future value. When Matos, Luciano, and Harrison graduate to MLB in the near future, they will add a lot of youth and promise. Then, there’s a second tier of role players, like Villar and Ramos, who may not become superstars, but can turn into quietly solid roleplayers, like Pablo Sandoval was for years.
The pitching rotation this year was very good, perhaps playoff caliber. There was a lot of risk with this group, but plenty of upside. If Harrison turns into anything like Logan Webb, and the Giants can resign Rodon (or someone comparable), the rotation is in good shape.
TLDR? Bottom line is that Zaidi doesn’t need to go out and buy a brand new team. The Giants have the money for a couple of splashy acquisitions (Judge? Correa? Rodon?) to help supplement the role players they have unearthed and will continue to, and if the farm continues to graduate players to help transition the older vets into the new wave of youth, this team will be in as good of a position as any to compete for the playoffs.
VonPurpleHayes
They should go after Rodon. I can just picture him in a Giants uniform.
juzsaydat
Hire a Gm? What the h have they been doing?
Pete'sView
Harris JUST left for Detroit. Are you paying attention?
A'sfaninUK
Uhhh, the Giants are a LONG way away than just 1 SP! What an insanely stupid thing to say out loud.
That Giants fluke season is going to bite them so hard in the long run, because it was 100% scheduling luck all season long (never facing anyones ace), and it made Zaidi look a lot more competent than he is. Zaidi is just not a good look for the Giants, who have money – they don’t need dollar store Billy Beane, they just need to know when to trade for elite stars on small market teams. Zaidi has no long term plan here, its becoming more apparent by the day.
Rsox
Its amazing to me that Alex Cobb has been in the league for 11 seasons and has never started 30 games in a season.
Someone mentioned Bassit to the Giants, thats not a bad choice. Nathan Eovaldi wouldn’t be bad either and i unfortunately don’t see the Red Sox signing him back to another multi-year deal.

Can we all agree the Eugene Emeralds have the worst logo in professional sports? It looks like a 12 year old trying to “do graffiti”

Even with last year being so good, we’re the Giants really all that good last year? Or is it just me.
guynamedchris
Hmm… last year’s Giants were NL ranked #1 in OPS, #1 in homeruns, #2 in runs scored, #2 in team ERA, #2 in FIP. Only the Dodgers were ahead of them in any of these categories.
I dunno, it seems like they actually WERE really good.
Samuel
guynamedchris;
Thank You!
You pointed out why winning in rotisserie league and MLB are not even remotely related.
Players can play for their stats and get large contracts. Teams can have an abundance of players with great stats. Doesn’t mean the team wins.
Macbeth
The Steelers were like 12 and 4 a few years ago but pro football focus jeot rating them outside the top 5 because they out played their record I feel the Giants were a similar story.
King of Norway
Missing in this discussion is the incredible payroll flexibility Farhan has created. Sans the LeStella deal, there isn’t a single albatross contract on the books. The books are nearly clean in 2023 and totally clean in 2024. It is NOT a coincidence the FA class is so good this winter and the Giants have over 100mil ready to spend – that’s all Farhan. There’s enough funds to swing deals for Ohtani, Judge, and others, easily. Farhan should be congratulated for creating this payroll flexibility without having to lose like the Nationals or A’s.
King of Norway
This could be the most exciting SFG offseason in decades.
jekporkins
I agree… I just want the winter meetings to start already. I’m going nuts wondering what they are going to do.
guynamedchris
La Stella is owed just $11.5 million for one more year. Is that really an albatross?
But yeah, I think the time is right to start getting some big pieces.
Samuel
King of Norway;
Get over it.
Ohtani is not a free agent.
MLB teams need all 26 players on a roster to win in todays environment. You want to corner the market on 5-6 players – which no team will – that’s fine. One or two guys get hurt. One has a bad season. Now what do you have? Hitters only bat once every 9 hitters. Starting pitchers only pitch once every 5 games. Back-end bullpen pitchers throw 60-75 innings a year.
Central Valley
Will Brandon Crawford be the starting SS next year, or will the Giants bring in Carlos Correa or one of the other stud SS on the free agent market this year?
How about 1B, 3B, etc? Just about the entire roster needs to be retooled this off-season. Farhan and crew will be extremely busy this off-season.
jekporkins
I’m curious about this too… Next season is definitely his swan song and they will milk it for ticket sales.
I suspect they get a SS (I’d love Swanson personally) and have Crawford back him up or mix in and out. The thing is Crawford is still solid defensively. Maybe have the new SS back him up and play some 3rd until he retires after 2023, then slide him over.
I could see them getting a veteran for 1st or have JD Davis give it a whirl. I have no idea if he’s someone I would rely on.
Hope they get rid of Longo as he’s not dependable any longer. Rather see Villar there. Giants have to get younger.
Bullpen definitely needs one more banger arm. Another solid starter is needed too. I doubt they can keep Rodon, but we’ll see. As long as he doesn’t ask for a 5 year contract, but I suspect he will…
Central Valley
100% agree. I personally think Rodon is going to leave. It’s too bad, I loved watching him pitch this year. Dude is a stud.
Their entire roster needs help, luckily they have a ton of $ to spend if they wish.
Samuel
jekporkins;
Sure……
A FA SS in his prime will come to the Giants to play another position and “slide over” when Crawford leaves.
Sure, Eric Clapton will join the band to play lead guitar (because that what he does), but for a year or so he’ll play tambourine.
Pete'sView
Samuel —That was going to be my comment. I personally want the Giants to sign Trea Turner—even if it means outbidding the Dodgers. But if anyone thinks Turner is going to play utility because of Crawford they should put down the pipe. Craw needs to understand. that
I say Crawford gets to play ss against right-handers only, with Trea willing to play 2B those days. If Trea’s not willing, then Craw (with his toothless bat) has to go to utility or 2B (Estrada to LF?).
I love Crawford, but the Giants need to move on. And if they re-sign Brandon Belt, I’ll be pissed. Longo’s a different story: when he’s healthy he contributes on both sides of the ball. But the Giants shouldn’t pay him $13M.
And, of course, Giants need to do everything in their power to resign Rodon and another everyday banger bat—not necessarily Judge.
Steve53
Of course, the real problems are Zaidi, driven by metrics, platooning and cost-controls, and Kapler, for going along with it all and effectively letting Zaidi manage the lineup. Until they change, the Giants are bound for a long stretch of mediocre performances and uninspired play.
