The ALDS is tied 1-1, as today’s Game 2 saw the Yankees suffer a tough 4-2 loss to the Guardians in 10 innings. Giancarlo Stanton’s two-run homer gave New York a 2-0 lead after the first inning, but the Yankees managed only four more hits and zero additional runs in the next nine innings against Guards pitching. The series now shifts to Cleveland for the next two games, with Luis Severino slated to face Triston McKenzie in tomorrow’s Game 3.
More from the Bronx…
- According to four agents and a non-Yankees executive polled by the New York Post’s Jon Heyman, Aaron Judge’s next contract is going to be worth at least $300MM, with some speculation that he might approach the $350MM or even $400MM thresholds. It would be a gigantic and possibly record-setting deal for the slugger, yet Judge’s huge 62-homer campaign has made a strong argument for such a contract. With other teams surely interested and possibly driving the price up, it remains to be seen if the Yankees will retain Judge, though GM Brian Cashman said this week that “we’d love to keep him if we can.”
- It also seems like you can rule out any chance of a crosstown swap of free agents, as Heyman doesn’t believe the Mets will make a true run at Judge, nor is it likely that Judge would leave the Yankees for New York’s other team. A league source also flatly told Heyman that “the Yankees aren’t going after [Jacob] deGrom,” as there has been speculation that deGrom might be looking to leave New York for a team closer to his home in Florida.
- The Yankees are missing several notable players on their ALDS roster, but manager Aaron Boone told reporters (including MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch and The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner) that four injured players could perhaps be available if the Yankees advanced to the ALCS. In preparation, Andrew Benintendi, Frankie Montas, and Ron Marinaccio are all heading to Tampa to work out in a live game setting. As Montas recovers from shoulder inflammation, Boone said that Montas would be used as a bulk pitcher (behind an opener) or as a multi-inning reliever, rather than in his usual starting role. DJ LeMahieu is still traveling with the team as he recuperates from his foot injury, with the Yankees specifying that LeMahieu is suffering from a ligament issue with the second toe of his right foot.
RobM
I don’t see the Yankees or the Mets raiding each others top free agents this off season or future ones. More to lose, little to gain. Big market teams in different leagues are more likely to stick together as the small- and mid-market teams will want a greater piece of their pie.
LordD99
@RobM, this off season will certainly test that idea as both teams have free agents the other team may covet. I tend to lean toward your suggestion. Fans like to engage each other but not sure the teams will feel similar. Driving up the price of players doesn’t help either team. In fact, I don’t know why any team engages in that. All new AAV’s will then create future problems for the team driving up the price.
MuleorAstroMule
Maybe because teams are not actually driving up prices with the intention of not signing players. You basically explained this to yourself when you pointed out that it is in no team’s best interest to engage in such a practice.
Bidding wars occur but they are due to a limited supply and a high demand. Salaries increase due to the growth of MLB revenue and inflation. We don’t need to ascribe any nefarious reasoning to what can be explained by simple market economics.
User 401527550
The Mets and Yankees will both talk to each other’s players. If nothing else but to drive the price up on each other.
Sunday Lasagna
Agents take care of that on their own. ……the Yankees, Dodgers, Mets, Red Sox have “checked in” or have their client on their “radar”……it’s comical.
A'sfaninUK
Hold up, “comical”?
Explain why you, in your job, trying to get more money is “comical”?
I have never seen any group of workers more hated than MLB players, people like you are a disgrace to humanity for hating MLB millionaires while being silent on the billionaire owners who are LYING to you, as all 30 teams could EASILY have a $1B team salary, but dont because the scamming billionaires are taking too much of the pie. A billion is TOO MUCH money for a single person to have, and its not landing on you just how much a billion is. Look into that. Millionaires are closer to being homeless than they are being a billionaire.
Scott Boras is a workplace legend and should be viewed as an American icon – if that statement disgusts you, then congrats, the billionaires have propagandicized you and you now work for them, you have no original thoughts of you own, just billionaire feeding you and making you do their work for them, which is stealing the most money out of an industry, period. Cucked much? Get your own thoughts and stand with players, 100% of the time.

=================================
Of course. Every single time the RS are interested in a player, the agents ask the writers to say the Yankees are interested. And the same with the Yankees. Assuming that Judge goes to market, I can guarantee you that there will be multiple articles saying that Bloom is preparing a monster proposal.
Your absolute hatred of rich people is preventing you from seeing the reality of the world. Absolutely everyone engages in these tactics, so yes, it is comical.
RobM
@tedtheodorelogan, yes, although we just call him Dad.

You are on the spectrum AsfaninUK. Get diagnosed and you will hopefully feel better. People don’t attack others and say the things you do on every thread.
Gasu1
“Millionaires are closer to being homeless than they are being a billionaire.” Go look at the bell-shaped distribution of incomes, then say that. There’s a lot more people whose incomes are between homeless and millionaires, than there are between millionaire and billionaires. Mathematics actually provides tools so people are not limited to fatuous statements such as this. Log scales are another one.
LordD99
Trying to scare Mets fans by putting deGrom in a headline of all Yankees?! : -)
tiredolddude
Relax. We all know he’s going to sign with the Pirates
3Rivers
Brilliant comedic value here….. Smh

Yankees screwed themselves today. Any hope of them beating Houston depended on Cole pitching game one. That’s not going to happen with those loss.

Also hard to beat the Astros when the Astros are playing Cleveland

Mets sign Judge and put him in center. Let the Jacob deGrom go and sign Verlander.

Bringing in Taillon to pitch to the heart of the Guardians’ order in a situation he’d never faced before, instead of using Schmidt, who’s well accustomed to pitching out of the bullpen — that hinted of magical thinking.
luclusciano
Errors changed that.
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
Fink I was thinking the exact same thing, but then those first two hits he allowed were just bloopers that fell in on a lark. The only hard contact was Naylor’s double. But regardless, putting a well-seasoned reliever (and not a starter) into a standard reliever’s role just seems like the optimal and rational move at that point.
Yankee Clipper
Boone’s quotes were ever so…LeBooner-like. He says they didn’t put Hicks in for TLo because Clase doesn’t walk anyone. So, the only reason Hicks is in the roster is to walk?! Why in the world is he on the roster then? Peraza can hit, run, and field.
Yankees losing this game today was big. Boone was playing in conservation mode by swapping out arms like underwear, despite having two rest days. I know he’s prepping for tomorrow, but he could’ve used less arms and won (possibly) while still having ‘pen arms for tomorrow.
Now, we have to win two in Cleveland. Yankees are the better team, but Guardians out-played and out-managed the Yanks today, not that I’m surprised by the latter.
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
It may be Boone doesn’t have enough arms in the bullpen. Or he doesn’t trust everyone he does have. Who is left that he completely and truly trusts right now? Loaisiga & Wandy? Yikes. Green, King, and the 2021 version of Aroldis were like Boone’s security blanket, and they are no more. Sevy needs to go long tomorrow, like his last start in Texas would be spectacular. 7 innings , 1 hit. If Sevy can replicate that , the Yanks should be golden.
Yankee Clipper
Yeah, all are valid points. I’m sure it’s a combination of everything you have there. The ‘pen has certainly struggled without some of our key arms.
And, yes, regardless, Sevy does need to go deep tomorrow to have a chance. If he goes 7, chance is really good. Less than 6 and I’ll be quite concerned.
JoeBrady
I hope that Boone and Cash get hammered on the FAN today, but that’s just my hatred talking.
It’s a tie game, so there is a decent chance your RP will have to go multiple innings. Taillon is a decent choice to go 3+. And this was just the Yankees sucking (aka, they got unlucky). Ramirez’s double was barely contact. Then Donaldson, because he likes the 1B coach so much, threw the ball to him. Ramirez, very alertly, came into 2B standing up. That allowed him to advance. The NYY stupidly brought the IF in (yes, I’d have done the same), and the guy hits the ball softer than Ramirez did.
Seriously, as much as I like to bash the Yankees, there wasn’t one thing I’d have done differently. The beauty of baseball is that you can do everything right, and still get your butt whipped.

The series will determine which is the better team, and I mean now, not the teams they were before the trade deadline.
whyhayzee
Weird that the Yankees actually benefited from an awful strike call on Stanton. And that was their only runs for the day.
Edp007
I understand when Cohen was trying to get approval votes from mlb owners , there was plenty of resistance, Steinbrenner was the main arm twister getting approved. Big favour. Doubt Cohen will stab his friend and outbid for Judge.

deGrom wants to be in Florida? Maybe take a deep discount and sign with the Rays!

I wouldn’t put Boston out of the running for Judge. They need a boost to that club’s lackluster overall power. (If he signs, kiss Xander and Devers goodbye though.)
A'sfaninUK
Why kiss them goodbye? Boston can easily afford all 3, they are one of the richest teams.
JoeBrady
Do you ever add anything except “Team xyz should sign everyone, They’re all rich”?
EasternLeagueVeteran
The Series is only two games in, but Judge is 0 for 8 with 7 strikeouts and a walk and run scored. Hope he does better or he won’t get that 400 million.

Ah yes, use 2 games instead of 162, good job, you are ruining the game when you write dumb stuff like this.

No one “regrets” long term contracts, they ALREADY KNOW THAT GOING IN.
FFS, are you that stupid you think the teams are thinking “Oh yeah Miggy is going to win a triple crown at 40 even though he’s an alcoholic and not athletic at all!”
They pay $ for the NAME, not the STATS. Stop lying to yourself and wake up, because this is the reality.
The framing of player salaries and what spurned you to even think about pocket watching right now, is by far the worst example of billionaires making poor people hate millionaires.
You took the billionaires bait. Stop doing that.

Judge is either the Yankees or Giants, DeGrom is either the Mets or Braves. If DeGrom stays in NY, it’s going to exceed Scherzer and if the Braves have a ‘4’ in front of the per year average and also in years, he may take less than what he’ll extract from the Mets.
Yankee Clipper
I’ve seen several write the Braves but that doesn’t line up with how they typically operate. I could be wrong, but the Braves just seem like a long shot to me. AA doesn’t strike me as a guy willing to go all-in on a DeGrom price tag. Moreover, the Braves don’t typically have that type of faux-cap space for a $35-$40MM player.

Would you care to wager on this one?
To think that the Marlins, who have nothing but pitching, would blow up their budget to acquire yet one more pitcher, when they are desperate for hitting, is beyond delusional.

He coming with wheeler in philly
Yankee Clipper
That would be scary…but is a plausible theory. Add deGrom to that rotation and that’s a phenomenal 1-3. Plus their offense? Wow, Philly would have to be considered legit contenders, perhaps favorites, for the NLE next season.
Yankee Clipper
Yeah, my bad, I’m thinking a best-of-7, where 3 are played in Cleveland. They only need 1 in Cleveland – good call.

Beltran must not be there for these playoff games banging his trashcans??? Judge’s hitting has disappeared without the Beltran help and cheating.

Beltran is in Houston banging the cans for Altuve and Alvarez

@ctguy Beltran works for the YES network and obviously Alvarez was not on the Astros in 2017. Your ignorance is seeping through your typing.

Altuve is definitely cheating like crazy and everyone knows it.
Yordan….might be the real deal.

Not having Benintendi at leadoff is really shortening the lineup. At this point they should be looking to put Donaldson, Torres or even Hicks leadoff.
Yankee Clipper
Torres seems like a good bet right now. His swings are really sound.

Imagine 62 Homers per year for the next 10 years!

Judge to angels. Degrom to philly.

Angels need a lot of money to resign Ohtani next year. They have no money to sign anyone big this year if they even think of keeping Ohtani pass next year. Ohtani will get a $300 million plus deal.

No way should the Angels do that. Trade him for a package of young talent.

‘New York’s shortstop was making himself available after another suspect performance on the defensive side of the ball, one component in what turned out to be a walk-off loss for the visiting team in Game 3 of the American League Division Series against the Guardians.
“Just disappointed,” Kiner-Falefa said in a solemn tone once it was his turn to speak to members of the media. “I had multiple opportunities to help the team tonight and wasn’t able to come through. I’m frustrated with myself.”
mlb.com/news/isiah-kiner-falefa-defense-yankees-al…
I’m not as disappointed in you, Isiah, as I am with whoever decided to leave Oswald Peraza off the playoff roster despite his 139 OPS+ and superior defense.
Poster formerly known as . . .
Look at this, just posted on the CBS site:
“Oswaldo Cabrera will take over at shortstop for New York, moving switch-hitting veteran Aaron Hicks to left field.”
Instead of playing Oswald Peraza at shortstop, where he’s excelled, and keeping Cabrera in the outfield where he’s excelled, they’re playing Hicks.
I wish I could say “unbelievable,” but it isn’t, and that makes it the more upsetting. Or maybe “infuriating” is the better word.
If they lose this game and Hal doesn’t fire both Boone and Cashman, any claim on his part to care about winning will ring very tinny.
