The Padres made it to the NLCS for the first time since 1998, but their season came to a close yesterday when they were knocked off by the Phillies in five games. San Diego now turns its attention to the offseason, where they’ll face a decent amount of possible roster turnover around a star-studded core.
San Diego will see Mike Clevinger, Sean Manaea, midseason trade pickups Josh Bell and Brandon Drury and relievers Pierce Johnson and Craig Stammen all hit free agency. A handful of other players have contractual options that could get them to the open market. Each of Nick Martinez, Robert Suarez and Jurickson Profar has the ability to opt out of their contracts this winter. Wil Myers, meanwhile, has a $20MM team option that is certain to be bought out for $1MM.
Martinez and Suarez were two of San Diego’s higher-leverage relievers down the stretch, raising the possibility of a good portion of the Padres bullpen hitting the open market. As part of a broader look at questions facing the roster (a piece worth a read in full), Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune suggests Martinez is likely to test the open market. The right-hander signed a four-year, $25.5MM guarantee last winter following a three-season run in Japan, with the contract affording him an opt-out chance after each season. He’s due $19.5MM over the next three years but would be due a $1.5MM buyout if he opts out, meaning he’s left to decide whether he can top a three-year, $18MM guarantee on the open market.
MLBTR’s Steve Adams took a detailed look at the situation last month, noting that Martinez’s strong performance out of the bullpen made that an interesting call. Acee indicates Martinez could prioritize finding a rotation opportunity after working in a swing role this year. The 32-year-old started 10 of his first 12 outings but moved to the bullpen full-time in mid-June. At the time of his bullpen transfer, he had a 4.05 ERA with an average 21.9% strikeout rate and a slightly elevated 10.4% walk percentage. Following the move to relief, Martinez worked 46 frames of 2.74 ERA ball. He cut his walk rate to 7.4%, but his strikeout rate dipped a percentage point. Despite lacking power, swing-and-miss stuff, Martinez picked up eight saves and served as a generally versatile bullpen piece for manager Bob Melvin.
Martinez’s ostensible desire for a rotation spot shouldn’t inherently rule him out in San Diego. While he was squeezed out of the mix midseason, the Friars went on to deal MacKenzie Gore in the Juan Soto trade. Coupled with the aforementioned free agencies of Clevinger and Manaea, there should be a fair bit of opportunity behind Joe Musgrove, Yu Darvish and Blake Snell. Acee indicates the Padres don’t want to abandon the possibility of using Adrián Morejón as a starter, however. The southpaw, once one of the game’s top pitching prospects, worked out of the bullpen 26 times this year after missing almost all of last season due to Tommy John surgery. Morejón isn’t guaranteed a season-opening rotation spot next year, but it seems the Friars are open to stretching him back out after a healthy offseason.
Suarez was a more straightforward power bullpen arm. Also a signee out of NPB last offseason, he went on to make 45 regular season appearances despite a two-month absence with right knee inflammation. He posted a 2.27 ERA across 47 2/3 innings, striking out a whopping 31.9% of opponents. Suarez’s control was erratic, but he brandished an upper-90s fastball and was Melvin’s most trusted bullpen arm by season’s end. It concluded on a sour note, with Suarez surrendering the go-ahead homer to Bryce Harper that brought San Diego’s year to a close, but he pitched out of a number of jams earlier in the postseason. With that kind of velocity and swing-and-miss stuff, he’s a lock to bypass the final $5MM on his deal in favor of a $1MM buyout and test free agency.
Things are a bit more settled on the position player side, but president of baseball operations A.J. Preller and his staff will have to make a few key decisions there as well. First is whether to retain any of the impending free agents. Acee writes that the team is open to bringing back Drury, who hit eight homers in 46 games as a Padre. He only had a .290 on-base percentage during that time, but he’d posted a .274/.335/.520 showing with 20 homers for the Reds over the season’s first few months. Drury can cover any non-shortstop position on the infield and could serve as a corner outfield option with the team potentially losing Profar and Myers.
For his part, Myers indicated that he’s open to a return to San Diego (link via AJ Cassavell of MLB.com). It certainly won’t be on the $20MM option, but Myers will find a big league deal on a lower base salary this offseason. He’s typically provided the Friars with slightly above-average offense, and that was again the case in 2022. Myers hit .261/.315/.398 over 286 plate appearances. He didn’t offer much against right-handed pitching but he popped six homers in 90 plate appearances against southpaws and carries a career .255/.351/.453 line while holding the platoon advantage.
With Bell’s possible departure, the Friars don’t have an obvious in-house first base option, perhaps opening the door for Myers to return at a lower rate. They could certainly dip into the free agent class there, although Acee notes there’s some support in the organization for playing Jake Cronenworth more frequently at first. Cronenworth is an above-average defensive second baseman, making that something of an odd fit, but San Diego has one of the sport’s most talented infields. Ha-Seong Kim proved himself an everyday player filling in for Fernando Tatis Jr. at shortstop, while Manny Machado is an MVP candidate at the hot corner.
Tatis didn’t play in 2022 because of injuries and a performance-enhancing drug suspension, but he’ll be back with the club in late April next year. Tatis still has 20 games remaining on his 80-game suspension — he missed 48 regular season contests and 12 playoff games this year — but will be back in the everyday lineup a few weeks into next year. Penciling him back in at shortstop could require kicking Kim to the other side of the second base bag. That’d form one of the sport’s top defensive infields, of particular value with forthcoming limitations on shifting. San Diego has also explored the possibility of playing Tatis in center field while curtailing Trent Grisham’s playing time on the heels of a .184/.284/.341 line. That could again be under consideration, but Tatis has previously expressed his preference for sticking at shortstop.

Tais has demonstrated he’s not a team player in a number of ways. I’m almost thinking the Pads should have voided his contract.
Maybe THIS TIME he’ll show signs of growing up. The first sign will be how he deals with NOT playing SS.
Dorothy_Mantooth
The Padres should trade for Bobby Dalbec from Boston. He had a down year last season, but has 30HR potential with above average defense as well at 1B. He can also DH for them. Dalbec starts out the season cold but perhaps the warmer weather would help him get off to a good start and finally fulfill his potential. It wouldn’t cost SD much to acquire him either.
roob
Thanks, Mrs. Dalbec.
gbs42
They should check with Boston about acquiring Hosmer.

Is there a Mr. Dalbec, Mrs. Dalbec?

Padres should sign Trey Mancini.
He’ll be affordable and can play a competent 1B/DH. Bell is going to command more and I’m not sold he’s going to be the better player next season.
SDHotDawg
Bell has a track record of being a slightly above average player on both sides of the ball. But, I don’t think he’s interested in resigning with the Padres, based on the way he was used.
Crunchtime1969
Bring Rizzo back to play 1B. Tatis in CF. Grisham a 4th OF. Infield is set. Bring in another starting pitcher or two. Let Bell,Myers, Clevinger, and Manaea walk. Try to sign Suarez.
VegasSDfan
Rizzo has band box power only
Crunchtime1969
He had 32 hr’s and 75 RBI’s. That’s not band box power and would be an upgrade.

I’m pretty sure the post season doesn’t count towards Tatis’s 80 games. Thought only games he draws a salary counted, and the players were automatically disqualified from post season regardless if the suspension was still in place or not.

Curious as to who plays first next year. Resign Bell? Trade for Tellez? Do they want Cronenworth to be the first basemen? Find out next time on DragonBall Z.

Jose Abreu, if not trade for Dominic Smith or Garrett Cooper for a platoon.

Grab Trea Turner. Put him or Tatis is CF. Move Crone to 1B. Kim stays at SS.

Trea Turner goes East coast I think. I predict the Marlins make a splash.

Personally, I think the Braves will let Dansby walk and grab Turner. Just a hunch.

Of these 9 FAs maybe two are worth bringing back
CrikesAlready
That was it. They shot their wad and went flaccid in the NLCS (well, the bottom 3
were impotent compared to the division series). They’re screwed. No depth, sure-lose contracts and bad trades depleting their farm system.
dvmin98
How? They still have their core, plus Tatis.
Darvish, Snell and Musgrove. Grab two more starters. Resign Martinez. Grab a 1B or resign Drury. Back up CF. Clean up the 40 an. That’s about it
Simm
With tatis back this team will be in great shape next year. The one thing you are leaving out is the owners desire to win. Padres will be even stronger next year.
Deleted Userr
2024 is what I’m worried about. After the 2023 season ends Manny Machado can opt out and Snell And Darvish are FA’s.
dvmin98
Manny likely won’t opt out. They are already talking about extending Darvish, but there is no rush at this point. Snell could be extended based on how he does (1st half Snell vs. 2nd half Snell).
Deleted Userr
Manny opting out or not will depend on how he plays in 2023. Don’t try it with “He won’t opt out because he wants to stay.” That’s basically never actually happens.
There’s also a segment of the fanbase that wants to trade Blake Snell this offseason.
CNichols
I think if they’re going to extend starter it’s going to be Darvish not Snell. Darvish is much more consistent. Plus Yu is already 36 so he’s likely looking at a shorter term extension as opposed to Snell who is going to want more length on a deal.
ACK
Agreed, SP is always risky on long term deals. I would rather add 1 or 2 years onto Yu Darvish contract over going 5-6 years on Snell. We’ve seen certain SP pitch well into their late 30’s. Scherzer, Verlander, Charlie Morton, and Zack Greinke off the top of my head.
Padres need to rework Martinez deal and add him as no 4 SP next year. Darvish, Musgrove, Snell, and Martinez and then work it out for no 5 with Morejon, someone else in the minors or a cheap FA SP. .
JoeBrady
They’re screwed.
========================
Nonsense. They might have an issue in 2024, but in 2023, they basically lose Profar, Suarez, Martinez and Clevinger. And they pick up Soto and Tatis.

Unless Tatis screws up again. 3 strikes.

@JoeBrady – Pads aren’t screwed. Profar and Clev walk and that’s an immediate upgrade.

It will be an interesting off-season for the Padres… will ownership allow another increase in payroll after breaking the bank at nearly 300 million? If not the Padres may have missed their window with manny most likely opting out of his contract and Preller dealing away his depth and cost controlled players.
Brew88
Apparently the Padres “bank” isn’t broken due to increased attendance in 22, recordbreaking season tickets sales in 23, and sound budget management despite the smaller market they’re in. Ownership seems committed. But it will be interesting how they set up 23, will they go for it or temper things a bit so the transition to 24 isn’t so difficult.
drasco036
“Budget management”? Three straight years paying the luxury tax and they are already over three million over for 2023 without any re-signings, improvements or arbitration raises.
Brew88
@drasco. I get your point but yes, despite going over the luxury tax in 2021, they are turning a big profit in a smaller market. There’s a difference between team management and business management. Seidler seems to know what he’s doing, and the strategy has the city is going bonkers over them. It also helps that they eliminated the rival Dodgers and were a few bad bounces and managerial decisions away from winning the NL pennant.
gwynngwyn
Where are you getting your figures from? They were over the last 2 years, not 3. And Spotrac doesn’t show them anywhere near the luxury tax payroll for next year.
libertyfighter
Nearly $300 million? Try $230ish cha cha
99socalfrc
Exactly. They barely went into the tax
gwynngwyn
Their payroll wasn’t near $300MM, and Manny can’t opt out until next year.
99socalfrc
Under no circumstance can you move Kim off SS at this point. He’s simply too good defensively. Tatis is in a situation (of his own doing) that he doesn’t really get a say in where he plays. He needs to show up, play wherever the teams asks him to and man up for his teammates. He seriously needs to earn back respect not have it handed it to him.
larry48
Tatis has never been a team player and won’t be one in 2023. Tatis may be cancer again in 2023 he has been s problem for 3 years and his contract is probably going to be really bad one.
99socalfrc
I’m not sure that’s totally believable. He put off the shoulder surgery for a very long time and after all his screwups last year, he finally did it. That would seem to indicate a shift in his thinking.
Either way from the team perspective it’s time they play hardball with him. If he needs to ride the bench or pout in the clubhouse for six months then oh well. No way can you just let him walk back in like nothing happened. Give him an assignment, tell him to shut up and get to work.
utah cornelius
Of course he’s a ridiculously wealthy young man no matter what. He could say “screw it! I don’t care what anyone thinks!” and simply punch the clock and collect his paychecks.

The Padres LOL!

I am a Padres fan.
I want Tatis in the OF next year. Kim is just too good at SS to be moved to 2b or the bench.
Why would Tatis be in CF and not a corner? Grisham might win his second GG this year. He still put up over 2.4 WAR this year from both WAR sites. I am not ready to move on from Grisham.
I would be ok with keeping Drury as a 1b/backup infielder. I would also be ok with keeping Profar, and if not, Myers. If SD keeps Myers, he achieves 10/5 rights, which SD might not want.
dmp13
Tatis RF Grisham CF Soto LF would be my bet
truthlemonade
Yeah probably. I know Tatis states his preference is to play SS, but Kim is just plain better at SS defense.
And Tatis doesn’t have enough leverage to get his “preference.” The Padres would prefer he didn’t get into multiple motorcycle accidents, and the team would prefer he didn’t get busted for steroids. Never mind what Tatis prefers.
utah cornelius
$300M sunk cost says he has leverage.
dmp13
LF Soto CF Grisham RF Tatis would be my bet
CNichols
Honest question here, do you get 10 and 5 rights if you hit FA? Like for Myers he’ll become a FA after the World Series so at that point he won’t be on SD’s roster anymore. If they signed him again before spring training, does 10 and 5 attach even after he’s been a FA and free to sign with other teams for the last 3 months?
Setting that all aside, I don’t think 10 and 5 really matters that much for Myers at this point because he shouldn’t be getting a multi-year deal anyways. If he re-signs for 1 year at a modest price and they can’t trade him I don’t see that as a big deal.
truthlemonade
10-5 rights means a player has full no trade rights because he has spent a full 10 years in the majors, with a full 5 years with his current team.
If Myers signs elsewhere, he will not get 10-5 rights. If he resigns with SD, he will attain 10-5 rights sometime before July 2023.
Eric Hosmer was on the cusp of being 10-5 last season, which is why SD was hellbent on trading him. Craig Stammen had 10-5 rights last year. If he resigns again for 2023, he will retain them.
Deleted Userr
Myers can only get 10-and-5 rights if he signs with SD
JoeBrady
And not using hader in the final three games, particularly the last game, and having Grisham sacrificing with one out in the 9th, and leaving your season in the hands of your #9 hitter, are both two of the worst moves I’ve even seen.

Pads should sign Bochy to an 3 week October contract in 23. Move Melvin to sick leave and let Bochy coach in game playoffs.

Padres got burned on that Soto/Bell deal.
Both players struggled and performed way below expectations after the trade.
And, the Padres gave up 6 players for those two guys?!
If Soto has banner All Star years ’23 and ’24 then that may lessen the blow of that one sided deal.
If Soto won’t sign long term in San Diego, then the Padres can always flip him for 3-4 top young players and prospects in ’24.
Padres could use a new, young CF who can hit (Tatis Jr).
Soto in RF.
Trade for or sign a new LF (Profar does not hit enough & not enough power for LF)
1B Plenty of players available including free agent Abreu from White Sox.
Will Myers is a utility player at this point in his career and not a starter.
Could be a good bench guy for much lower cost.
Drury might be good to keep around at the right price.
Padres need to try new guys # 4 and #5 starters.
Clevinger and Manea are not up to par and cost them a trip back to San Diego
in the NLCS.
Padres need to fix the weak links on this team to get back to the NLCS and World Series.
It should be a very interesting winter.
Trent, Myers, Proffar are not key players for a Championship team
(even though they played good in these playoffs.
When push came to shove, they could not produce the needed crucial hits).
I like Josh Bell as 1B DH if he would take a “pillow contract” to rebuild his value. His 2nd half after the trade was terrible offensive production. Playoffs were better!
CrikesAlready
One must remember that the Padres and AJ Preller love injured, defective and peak-valued players and give them exorbitant contracts that are unnecessarily favorable to a player.
They pay top dollar for bad performances from Profar until he has a decent year and then they lose them because he can opt out. They overpaid for him and he can walk. Considering his ties to the Tatis family, I’m concerned that he’s going to show up with a positive drug test.
Deleted Userr
Why would the Padres trade Soto after giving up all of that capital to acquire him that’s the worst argument I’ve ever heard they wouldn’t get back half of what they gave up to get him.
SportsFan0000
thelegendaryharambe
Soto will be playing in San Diego in a pennant race in ’23.
The Padres are talking about extending Soto past the ’24 season.
If the Padres and Soto cannot come to terms on a long term deal
(his is repped by Boras who likes free agency and bidding wars)
then, it would be smart for the Padres to deal Soto either before the ’24 season
or at the ’24 trade deadline.
Getting 3 or 4 young major league players and/or major league ready top prospects would be much better than getting 1 draft pick for Soto after he turns down a qualifying offer.
AGAIN: If it comes down to Soto/Boras rejecting an extension with the Padres, then trading Soto is a smarter move than just getting 1 draft pick for him after the ’24 season.
Deleted Userr
What about the 2024 season? How does trading Soto help them there? And they’re still not getting back even a quarter of what they gave up to get Soto if they trade him in 2024.
sergefunction
Why the flaming heck does San Diego not put Tatis Jr at 1B?
1) He’s forfeited his right to complain for the rest of his career. About anything.
2) Most of his many errors come from throwing due to his ligamentous-laxity shoulder. He supposedly had it repaired, but historically those sometimes stretch out again – with repeated overhead use such as in carpentry, roofing or baseballing.
3) He certainly has the bat for a first baseman. Why sign a lesser one?
4) San Diego has a strong recent history of willingly super-overpaying their player on first.
5) Moving Kim and possibly Cronenworth to accommodate Tatis Jr. means moving two Gold Glove finalists at one time, and a third if you count Grisham. Don’t do that.
6) Tatis Jr can always return to SS or go to CF if that ends up being viable in the near or far term. As in, they get a good player for first which right now they do not have.
BTW, why in the flaming heck did Bob Melvin not pitch Hader in the 8th against the Phillies’ 3-4-5 hitters? That was the game/season-saving inning, not the 9th. He could have used the setup guy in the 9th against the lesser lights.
I was first-guess screaming that at the TV at the time, so no fair calling this second-guessing.
99socalfrc
Suarez had already pitched the 7th, so the “setup guy in the 9th” wasn’t going to happen.
Also Suarez gave up one homer to a left handed batter in all of 2022. You watched it Sunday night. That is not a typo, in 88 plate appearances against left handed hitters he gave up just the homerun to Harper. Lefties where slugging .250 off him coming into that at bat. The decision seems alot less “dumb” once you know all that.
Brew88
Tatis’ shoulder laxity was not on his throwing arm so the recent surgery won’t affect him there. But the thought of Tatis at 1B is interesting – he’d probably be decent at that position, though it remains to be seen where the bigger void will be next year, 1B or OF? Most project him to be a plus OF once he gets more experience, given his leg speed and gun of an arm.
SportsFan0000
Tatis Jr in CF would be best for SD. Then, they can sign a power LF and power 1B to beef up their lineup and get to the World Series in ’23,
They would have a lineup with more depth and more thump that gives them the ability to score more runs and win more games.
Brew88
Tatis has no experience at 1B, so it’s logical he is asked to play OF.
Thee biggest looming question this off-season with the Pads is where will Tatis play next year (after he misses 20 games in April). Any placeholder he had at SS has been lost in all likelihood. The team has to fill a 1B void (but who is available?), and another OF (even if Tatis plays OF). Preller will likely let us know what direction they’re going in at winter meetings.
gwynngwyn
Tatis is the most athletic player on the team. First base is a waste. Send him to the outfield.
