I’m loving the humor is Darragh’s chats! Keep up the good work!
.
Pretty impressed. Was wondering how the Angels chat was gonna look…Think Darragh did as good as anyone could have.

Darragh could have at least played along with the Trout trade questions instead of just saying “he’s not getting traded”.
Rsox
Realistically he’s not. His contract coupled with his degenerative back condition plus the fact that there is no legitimate package that could net fair value says he is not tradeable
lionelhutz
Correct and, moreover, even if there was a legitimate package that could net fair value, the Angels aren’t trading Trout. He’s the face of their franchise not only now, but for decades to come after his retirement. Trout’s retiring an Angel. There will eventually be a statute of him in front of Angel stadium; hopefully a new stadium by then!
The ONLY way he’d be traded is if some other team was willing to drastically overpay for him, and what would be reasonable for him is so high, no team would every be willing to overpay.

Totally disagree though that ohtani could bring back as much at the deadline as they could now in a trade. They lose a lot of negotiating power by then.

A lot of Ohtani hype. I don’t get it. True, an amazing talent, but it just seems to accommodate his contributions is detrimental to the teams success. If I’m a GM/PoBO from another team, I’m looking for either his offense or pitching, not both. Curious to see which team or team(s) bid for his services.

How is having a top-tier hitter and an excellent pitcher all in one detrimental?
C Yards Jeff
In the history of the game, I’m drawing a blank on when this strategy won an owner a WS. Hell, even the Babe put aside his mitt for batsmanship only.
gbs42
In the history of the game, I’m drawing a blank on how many players there have been like Ohtani. It’s a vanishingly small sample size.
C Yards Jeff
Agreed. Babe Ruth is the only one that comes to mind.
A question. How have the Angels fared since Ohtani has been there? Is there a reason why teams use either a 4 or 5 man SP rotation? I’m willing to say “yes”, because a 6 man rotation doesn’t work.
Again, curious to see which PoBOs will be bidding for his services.
gbs42
Teams do poorly with great players. That doesn’t mean those great players are a detriment to their success. For example, the total number of WS titles for Ted Williams, Ernie Banks, and Barry Bonds is zero.
No team uses a 4-man rotation any more, and more teams are using 6-man rotations at least part of seasons.
C Yards Jeff
Point taken GBS42. I need to rethink this a bit. Cheers!

I think the biggest concern would be injury in the sense he’s doing both so there’s double the chance to get hurt as compared to a “normal” player just because of the workload. From a production standpoint, he’s a top 10 bat and a top 10 sp in one, so it’s hard to imagine he wouldn’t help any team become much better.

@CYard One of the dumbest post that I have seen in a while. You can’t think of a single team that can benefit from a 9+ WAR player. Think really hard. Is there a team out there that can benefit from adding 35-45 home runs to the middle of the lineup and one of the top 10 starters in baseball. Every team in baseball would benefit offensively and upgrade their rotation by adding Ohtani.
The reason it hasn’t happened throughout history is because there has not been an individual talented enough, not because a team hasn’t wanted 2 way player. There were many skeptics about Ohtani being capable of doing so, but obviously after 2 year of 9+ WAR and a MVP, those skeptics have been proven wrong.
Ma4170
@google
Agree, and I think WAR understates his true value since he doesn’t play the field… it’s like having Corbin burnes and Jose Ramirez in one player

The poll was nice. Should do one for every team chat!

5:54 The angels aren’t as far off as their record indicates. Their problem last year was that they were starting legitimate sub replacement level players in their lineup. If they can get just average production from those spots, that’s a huge improvement.
Darragh McDonald
5:55 Yeah, I think there could be something here. You already have the ceiling, just get a nice floor.

It would be cool sometime for the esteemed writers of our site to post a short little bio of themselves. I know a lot of us are impressed with their baseball knowledge and prowess and it would be cool to know how you all have come to learn the game. Keep up the fantastic work!!

Same questions over and over. As a long time Angel fan we already know the answers. They will do very little. Signing castoffs who were good 2 years ago hoping for a bounce back like they always do or bring up the same AAA guys for another look. I’ve seen this too many times. Their one big transaction last year was Syndergaard. He was mediocre for $20 million. Could have had a lot better pitcher for $20 Mill. Good Luck Perry, this is probably your last season as Angels GM. Hope new ownership signs a real GM and not some Assistant GM like Eppler and Minasian.
dh4all
Agreed about the choice of GM’s for this team. From DiPozo to Minny, they ruined the teams by trying to be manager and GM. Getting in new players were more important than firing the manager. I’m with Maddon on this one: keep the GM’s out of the dugout!

The Yankees just got swept by the Astros and they had Gerritt Cole’s 257 strikeouts this year and Aaron Judge’s 62 home runs. It takes more than 2 players. What’s scary for Yankee fans is that they also had Rizzo, Stanton, LeMahieu, and Cortes and still didn’t win a game in the ALCS.
It takes a balanced approach to win in the MLB and while I think Ohtani is an all-world athlete, I have to wonder aloud what else $40M a year could go towards to help the Angels diversify their talent pool.
What Arte didn’t understand (or didn’t care) is that Major League Baseball is more than just having your player (and logo) on the cover of MLB Show and selling player bobbleheads.

They have to trade Ohtani if they can’t extend him, right? Hard to imagine them letting a guy like that walk via free agency..
zeke1717
brandon marsh sure glad not to be a halo
zeke1717
obviously the best move is to keep trout and sign ohtani and trade rendon if that is even possible, they need 2 veteran starters

Why isn’t anyone talking about the rookie (Soto) that was hitting 400 at the end of the year. We should go after pitching. If we trade Otani I would sign him for three years only. I don’t think he can keep it up for longer than that. His hitting shows that when he pitches all year he a 30 plus max hitter. His ave. Will be about 260/270. Probably lower. If anyone signs him longer pleas put an opt. Out clause after three years for both parties.
Halo11Fan
If he gets hurt, he’ll be a star outfielder. Ohtani had a better wRC+ than Deavers last year.
And if works on hitting, he’ll get better.
He about as safe as a free agent can be.
gunnar
What about the as that was hitting 400 at the end of the year!
