The Astros wrapped up the top seed in the American League last night, having already secured 102 wins. It’s Houston’s second straight AL West title and third playoff appearance in as many years under general manager James Click and skipper Dusty Baker. The Astros have advanced at least as far as the AL Championship Series in each of the past two seasons, and the AL road to the World Series will again run through Houston.
Given that immense success, it’d seem to go without saying that Houston was satisfied with the franchise’s trajectory. However, both Click and Baker are in the final year of their contracts, and some uncertainty about the organization’s leadership future looms. Click signed a three-year deal when he took over baseball operations in February 2020, while the club inked Baker to a one-year extension last offseason. Owner Jim Crane told Mark Berman of Fox 26 (Twitter link) last month he’s “aware both contracts are up and we’ll address them at the end of the season.”
While there’s no questioning the team’s on-field success, it does not seem a mere formality that both Click and Baker will be retained. During an appearance on the Houston Chronicle’s Texas Sports Nation podcast last weekend (Twitter link), Chandler Rome noted the contract status for Click and Baker “has been a topic that has been whispered about in the Astros organization, people both in and out of the clubhouse, since the beginning of the season.” Rome added that, particularly in Click’s case, “everybody that I talk to (emphasizes) that this is not just a rubber-stamp thing. This is not just, ’we’re going to extend him and everyone’s going to be happy and be merry.’ There is some real speculation, some real intrigue, that James Click is not going to be back with the Astros after this season.”
Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic examined the situation yesterday, writing that some friction between Crane and Click could explain the organization’s hesitance to hand him a long-term extension. According to Rosenthal, Crane has taken on a very active role in baseball operations and tends to favor more bold additions than Click, whose approach to the roster is generally more restrained. Rosenthal notes that Click and Baker sometimes differ on the extent to which analytics should be integrated into in-game decisions but suggests that’s not as notable as whatever divide there may be between Click and Crane.
Both Click and Baker were brought in under unexpected circumstances. After the extent of the Astros’ 2017 sign-stealing operation was made public during the 2019-20 offseason, MLB handed down suspensions for then-GM Jeff Lunhow and manager A.J. Hinch. Houston promptly fired both after the league’s investigation. Crane tabbed Baker as Hinch’s replacement, then hired Click out of the Rays front office a few days later. It was a reversal of the typical course of action, in which the front office head plays a key role in deciding on the manager.
Crane has maintained he had no knowledge of the team’s sign-stealing operation. It’s not clear whether he’s subsequently taken on a more active role in baseball operations as a direct response to the fallout from that scheme. Either way, Rosenthal writes that “Crane does not trust Click the way he trusted Luhnow, with whom he worked for eight seasons.”
To be clear, neither Rome nor Rosenthal suggests Click’s or Baker’s time in the organization is definitively nearing its end. The two have adeptly led the team past the sign-stealing fallout with little drop-off in performance. They’re as well-positioned as any club (aside from perhaps the Dodgers) to make a deep postseason run in 2022. Both Rome and Rosenthal point out that it’d seem unlikely Crane makes any changes at the top if the Astros find playoff success this year, particularly if they win the World Series.
It’s nevertheless notable that questions persist given the consistent excellence the Astros have maintained for the past three years. If ownership does decide to tie Click’s and/or Baker’s future to the results of this year’s postseason, there’d be a lot riding on the extremely small sample of a playoff series. That’s not a great way to make decisions of this magnitude, but the reported tension in the Minute Maid Park offices will at least lead to some speculation about the franchise’s direction until Click’s and Baker’s situations are decided at year’s end.

Isn’t it the last 5 seasons they’ve reached at least the ALCS?
Fever Pitch Guy
LH – The writer was clearly referring to reaching the ALCS while under Baker and Click.
I really hope Baker comes manage the Red Sox, or Click replaces Bloom. The Astros are proof you don’t have to rebuild by getting high draft picks from being lousy. They haven’t been bad since 2014 and they refuse to spend a lot of money on overall team payroll, usually finishing between 5th-9th highest.
Hey John Henry, THAT’S how you run a team.
compassrose
Not sure what team you were watching because they were lousy until 2014. They got many high picks and drafted well. They kept a couple in the minors for maybe a season too long.
They brought the guys up around the same time. They had a bunch of kids running around they played together got better together and then turned them into what they are. Except they are on the downside. Players get to FA and you can’t keep them all.
Astros did build in the draft and added some good pieces around the core of kids. They took some chances and ones like Verlander paid off. Yes the team was built with high draft picks and a few FAs signings in there. Best way to build for the future.
RGV84
on the down side? they have a good offensive core of altuve alvarez bregman tucker and they have javier mccullers garcia urquidy and hunter brown all decent if not above average pitchers so definitely not on the down side and they have a bunch of money coming off the payroll they have plenty of money to add players as they need
Memphis Kong
They have the best staff in baseball, their lineup isn’t as strong but they are strong enough to win. They are not going down anytime soon.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
@Fever Pitch Guy I disagree with you on Baker. I know not many managers have won World Series, but there’s a reason why Baker has come so close but not made it. He overworks pitchers and can’t win the big games.
As a Sox fan, I hope the Yankees beat the Astros.
bloodreddawgs
“Refuse to spend a lot of money on a top 5 payroll”.. This guy has lost his melon
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
I disagree. Baker hasn’t won a big game. He would be a disaster on the Sox.
holecamels35
They should both be welcomed back with open arms, for pretty much as long as they want. I don’t see Dusty coaching much longer at his age but Click and the Astros are doing a fantastic job, they are rolling along every season without any bumps in the road.
all in the suit that you wear
holecamels35: Agreed…and if Crane is a good leader, he should value people with differing points of view.
Memphis Kong
Dusty isn’t a good manager. His lineups are horrible and his situational managing is close to Larussa ‘s.
WSnotAstros2017
No offense but I do not like year to year. Especially after Dusty and Click main contracts ended. Yes with the team reaching playoffs again the fact if they win WS will depend if they stay or go. Not sure how long Dusty will want to continue. Click not totally sure on as compared to Luhnow. He went out and got the people he wanted and more. Click deadline this season Mancini and Vazquez have not lived up to par with Houston even for being back up help or playing mightily. But guess will depend if we get by Tampa, Toronto, or Seattle to face Yankees. Whether WS will be a 2017 rematch or 2021 rematch perhaps we shall see

GM’s need to GM and stay out of the manager’s line up decisions.
myaccount2
The issue here is if an owner is going to hire a manager before a GM, there needs to be a clear directive about how to operate. It makes no sense in 2022 to not let the GM hire the manager or, in rare cases, vice versa. There needs to be cohesiveness between the two and it doesn’t seem to be fully there with these two. Baker is not the right manager for Click and Click is not the right GM for Baker. It seems they’re making it work, so I won’t suggest one needs to go, but it’s weird to not hire people with the same philosophy for those positions.
Memphis Kong
Except Dusty can’t manage a lineup.
LLGiants64
If the Astros win the world series, Crane might not be able to sign either of them.
Fever Pitch Guy
If the Astros win the WS, both Baker and Click should come to Boston to end the team’s 4 year curse.
toycannon
Quit your crying. Four years is hardly a curse. 21 seasons of no playoffs – 46 seasons without a World Series apeearance, now that is a curse
Jim Tavegia
Evidently whether part of cheating or not cheating, but winning, makes no difference in Houston. since the cheating scandal I have not watched a Houston game and never will. How they got to keep their WS win is beyond me.
Edp007
My great great grandpa hasn’t watched a white Sox game in over a hundred years 🙂
Fever Pitch Guy
Edpoo – I haven’t watched the Boston Marathon in 42 years.
Edp007
Lol
jjd002
Weird that you watch baseball at all then. It was a league wide issue and Houston was just the fall team. You are mad at the wrong people.
LLGiants64
Anybody what to take a guess at Baker’s contract value if he manages a winning world series team this year?

Astros was spelled correctly.
SliderWithCheese
Someday he’s going to choke on that toothpick and his players don’t like him enough to preform a Heimlich.
Fever Pitch Guy
Slider – How come you were never concerned about Tito choking on a huge wad of tobacco?
.
I thought chew was banned at all the stadiums now?!??? I heard some guys were “grandfathered” in and still allowed to…Maybe Tito is one of them haha

Would the articles picture be considered Clickbait?

Trashtros going to bring back Jeff Lunhow and hire Carlos Trashtran as manager.
stroh
Why not? Red Sox hired TrashCora, Tigers hired TrashHinch and Yankees hired TrashBeltran. Irrelevant drivel on trash cans from east coast media and MLB executives who are “owned” by the east and west coast teams. Bottom line is that the Stros had a better road winning percentage (no trash cans) vs home (trash cans) in 2017. And they won it in Dodger stadium. And with or without trash cans, they have been to 5 straight ALCS and will be there again.
luca brasi
I would not be surprised to see Luhnow Back as the GM next season. Crane never wanted to fire him in the first place.
SamtheMan!
Would be quite the twist.
Crane was forced to hire Click in the last minute. Hard to argue with these results but the owner will get what the owner wants
Samuel
Were the position open I could see David Stearns possibly going back to Houston if he’s free from his Brewer’s contract this offseason.
How did he get along with Mr. Crane?
Isn’t his wife from that area?
Unclenolanrules
Luhnow has moved on. He led an ownership group that bought a soccer team in Mexico and I think he bought one in Spain.
My bet is that either way Crane viewed Baker and Click as transition figures. It does make me nervous when a source of tension is owners being involved with personnel decisions that the general managers make. Last thing I want is an owner that is going to interfere with the baseball people. I know Crane played through college, but he’s still an owner.
brucenewton
They will probably win it all.
stroh
As an Astros fan, what I have seen the last 3 years with Click as GM is mostly bringing up players that Luhnow drafted plus adding some pieces around the edge thru free agency or trades. Although he’s had some minimal success on free agents/trades (Mancini, Vazquez, Montero, Maton, Stanek) he’s also bungled quite a few who have been busts ( Odorizzi, Pedro Baez, Niko Goodrum). Crane was used to Luhnow winning most trades big time ( Cole, Verlander, Alvarez, Pressly), signing top notch free agents (Brantley, Morton) and running a top notch minor league system. I am sure he wants to get back to that. I think Dusty will be back unless they don’t make it to the World Series. Both will probably be back if they win it all.
SamtheMan!
Pretty hard for Click to have done much with his farm system. He didn’t have any first round picks for his first 2 drafts.
Didn’t draft til the 3rd round in ‘21. He’s continued to progress players along in the system & that’s definitely not an easy accomplishment.
.
Hahaha “-particularly if they win the World Series.” Hahahaha Yeah right…..Gee, I guess I would want to keep my Manager and execs around too if we won the World Series. Small wonder. Shocking. How many Managers in MLB history have not been retained after winning a world series? Has that ever happened? Doubt it…
Motown is My Town
Dusty Baker is absolutely the worst manager in baseball.. hate him for how he sits his best hitter Yordan Alveraz for no reason and cannot manage his pitching staff. I hope he’s not back in 2023 as he sucks!!!!
Jake1972
If Baker wins it all he retires and if he doesn’t then he is replaced.
Also Click is out after this season.
nottinghamforest13
Baker also has been known to push a very 1960’s militant agenda behind the scenes. This too could be wearing his welcome thin.
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Never understood why teams keep moving on from Dusty. He makes the playoffs often, yet some analytical nerd makes a case for getting rid of him.
Old school? Yeah, but seems to be working for him.
jjd002
Because he can’t finish the job. The goal is a ring for a team like Houston, not just the playoffs.
keyser_soze
If that’s the case 28 managers should get fired every year. Not many managers have ever finished the job. The goal is giving your team a chance every year, but only people who actually know how competition and sport go, understand that.
Alkie
It is James Click’s 3rd full season as Astros GM. He is/was responsible for bringing in 16 of the 45 players who played a game this season in an Astros uniform.
His players (36% of the population) accounted for *6%* of the total, combined bWAR for the entire team (as of last Friday). Whether or not you like bWAR as a stat, that ratio is eyepopping. All Click has “accomplished” is not actively torpedoing what Luhnow had already built.
I’m not suggesting Click is a bad GM or that he needs to go, but the idea that his track record to this point is somehow a positive is a bit difficult to defend.
There was only Astro position player this season that was initially brought to the team by James Click and who had a positive bWAR this season. It was Jose Siri, who was traded midseason for Trey Mancini, who has been a near total bust. Since the trade, Siri continued to accrue positive WAR for TB (+0.6) while Mancini has been a black hole at the plate and a liability in the field (-0.2 oWAR, -0.4 dWAR). So while I think Click deserves some real credit for building a stellar bullpen (a hallmark of the Rays org he came from), it’s hard to see any other area being improved under his tenure.
The Astros are not a poverty team who need to scavenge for scrap, and yet Click’s moves include Niko Goodrum, Pedro Baez, and Mauricio Dubon (who, still, inexplicably gets an automatic start in CF for each Verlander game).
JustaFan 2
Don’t overlook the fact that this is the first year that Click has had s #1 and #2 draft choice to work with. He did an excellent job with the draft this year.
Luhnow was far from perfect. He cut JD Martinez loose for nothing in return. How did that work out? In 2015 he could have traded for Kimbrel days before the trade deadline, but refused to include Brett Phillips in the deal. Then days later he included Phillips, along with Josh Hader, Adrian Houser and Domingo Santana in return for Fiers and Carlos Gumpez. He traded Ramon Laureano for Brandon Bailey. He destroyed the Astros scouting department. Cut it down to a total of 19 scouts. That was another issue Click had to overcome when he took over in Houston. Click came in and immediately rebuilt the scouting department.
kc38
You hired someone from the Rays organization and then complain they like making more savvy moves than the big flashy moves…. Interesting

Gossip from a 13 year old girl.
coldgoldenfalstaff
Astros badly need to hire Espada as manager next year before someone else does. The issue in Houston is since Reid Ryan left the front office Crane and Crane’s son have been running things in a very hands on way. Maybe that was needed after the sign stealing scandal but it isn’t needed now. Crane, Click and Baker are all out of alignment. Owner needs to own, GM or President calls the shots and the manager manages, and it would be foolish for the Astros to not take full advantage of their still beat in league data tools.
Best result is Mejdal is GM/President coming back from Baltimore, Espada is manager and Crane butts out except for big money decisions as with Luhnow.
