There is plenty of cause for optimism in Seattle. The Mariners finished with a 90-72 record, their best since 2003. They delivered one of the best comeback wins in postseason history on their way to knocking off the Blue Jays in the wild card series. Down the stretch, the club locked up budding presumptive AL Rookie of the Year Julio Rodriguez through 2034 and extended two-time All Star starting pitcher Luis Castillo through 2028.
Now, on the heels of a thrilling season, Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto has indicated that he’s open to making big moves in order to improve what is already a playoff-caliber team.
At the M’s end-of-season media session on Wednesday, Dipoto said that his “great preference” this offseason “would be to land a shortstop that would like to play second base” (relayed by Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times). Dipoto is likely referring to any of the four “big name shortstops” who project to be free agents this offseason: Xander Bogaerts, Carlos Correa, Dansby Swanson, and Trea Turner. Each of these four would instantly improve Seattle’s offense, which ranked in the bottom half of all of baseball. All four of the big name shortstops will require multi-year pacts with significant annuals.
The Mariners project to have the payroll capacity to splurge on a top-of-the-market shortstop, should they choose to. In 2022, Seattle ranked 22nd in MLB with an Opening Day player payroll just shy of $104MM, per Cot’s Baseball Contracts. 2022’s figure is significantly lower than some of the Mariners’ recent seasons, during which Seattle was generally less competitive. From 2016 to 2019, the Mariners averaged total payrolls of roughly $150MM, ranking as high as 11th league-wide.
The M’s currently have around $91MM worth of payroll commitments for 2023, per Roster Resource. Though that number will increase as a result of arbitration, it seems likely that Seattle would have the fiscal capacity to sign one of the big four shortstops, even if they attempt to bring back Mitch Haniger, who will be a free agent this offseason as well.
The major caveat in Seattle’s pursuit of a big-name free agent shortstop will be whether or not any of them will accept a move to second base. Dipoto reaffirmed his commitment to J.P. Crawford as the Mariners’ shortstop. He told the media that Crawford, age 27, will “line up for us Opening Day at shortstop and the goal is to find someone to put around him.” Dipoto continued on to state plainly that the Mariners signed Crawford to be a shortstop and that “that’s what we intend to do.”
One could argue the cleanest fit of the four aforementioned shortstops would be Turner, who is the only one of the four to appear in Major League games as a second baseman. Turner was a full-time second baseman as recently as the second half of 2021, when he transitioned to the right side of the diamond so that the Dodgers could accommodate both Corey Seager and Turner after Los Angeles acquired him from the Nationals.
None of Correa, Bogaerts or Swanson has played on the right side of the infield in their careers, although they all have extended experience at the infield’s most demanding position. Trevor Story had also never previously played the keystone, but he agreed to move over in deference to Bogaerts upon signing with the Red Sox last offseason. Whether any of the big four shortstops this time would do so while letting Crawford keep shortstop isn’t presently known, but Dipoto and his staff seem likely to inquire with everyone in that group.
Haniger, meanwhile, will hit free agency after spending the past five seasons in Seattle. M’s general manger Justin Hollander was effusive in his praise for the 31-year-old outfielder and said the organization will remain in contact with his representatives at Apex Baseball (via Divish). At the same time, he noted that Haniger “wants to gauge what else is out there” on the open market during his first trip to free agency.
It’s not the best platform season for Haniger, who missed a couple months with a high ankle sprain. He ultimately appeared in 57 games and hit .246/.308/.429 with 11 homers over 247 plate appearances. That’s above-average offense but a step back from his 39-homer, .253/.318/.485 campaign in 2021. Haniger is eligible for a $19.65MM qualifying offer, but the relative down platform year and the M’s stockpile of controllable outfielders make it seem likely they’ll allow him to hit free agency unencumbered by a QO.
Joshy
Imagine if the Mariners dumped their remaining farm for Jazz Chisholm! He plays 2b and short, super fun player, would totally match the energy of this clubhouse. Super expensive but a great player when healthy.
Cincyfan85
I’m sure Jazz is one of the most untouchable players on the Marlins. Even if he was available, I’m not sure the Mariners have the farm to acquire him. Makes more sense for them to sign a free agent this off-season rather than deal from their somewhat depleted farm.
hiflew
I wouldn’t give up ANYTHING for Jazz Chisholm right now. Back injuries at a young age are usually a precursor to more back injuries as he ages. Sure it is possible that he comes back no worse for wear, but if I am dumping the farm, it is going to be for a near sure thing. And a guy coming off season ending back injury is about as far from a sure thing as there is.
Joshy
Of course its not realistic, but he was an all star, personally, even as a Mariners fan, my favorite player to watch, and would be so fun to see in Seattle. A pipe dream but something fun to imagine.
ayrbhoy
While we’re imagining unrealistic targets I’d love us to sign A Judge!
The M’s have the resources to afford him. Can you imagine a lineup with Julio, Ty France, Judge, Eugenio Suarez AND Cal Raleigh!? They can afford to sign Judge and Edwin Diaz.
Of all teams it would be really difficult to swing a trade with MIA, our system is top heavy with Pitching but MIA is stacked with great young Pitching. There are some really good young hitters ( G Gonzalez, Cole Young and Harry Ford,) in the lower levels but they are at least 2-3 yrs away from their debut. MIA needs ML ready hitters and pronto!
Its easy to see one of Bryce Miller, Taylor Dollard and Emerson Hancock leaving Seattle from our Farm System this offseason. A package with Flexen who is controllable through 2027 and maybe a Taylor Trammell and or Cade Marlowe should net an impact bat to fill that INF spot should 2-3 of those (4) star SS’s elect to stay with their current teams.
Cincyfan85
JP Crawford ranks 41 of 44 SS’s since 2021 in OAA (Outs Above Average). Asking any of those 4 to come in and play 2nd is kind of silly to me, especially Dansby Swanson and Carlos Correa, who rank 4 and 10, respectively. Based on the numbers, Crawford should be moved off SS regardless of who comes in because he has played poor defense there.
Deadguy
Jerry Dipoto be like “watch me fit this square peg into a round role”
.
Yeah what a strange thing for him to say/pursue…
Next, he’ll be targeting Pitchers that are willing to catch and play 3rd.
drfelix
Ohtani here we come lol
Fire Krall
Crawford is a bottom of the order average SS. Why in the heck would you wanna ask an All Star SS or World Series winning SS’s to move to 2b to accommodate him. If Crawford doesnt wanna play 2B, He d be a bench player or a DFA or trade canidate.
Does Jerry Dipsh@#tto live in a round box and sleep in the corner? Is his favorite color clear? I mean come on..Not having the balls to move JP to 2B..what does that tell other potential free agent that are considering signing with Seattle. Grow a pair!! Sign Turner let everyone know your in it to win it! Geez!!!!
bulldog1891
I used Fangraph’s WAR and DEF numbers instead but came to same conclusion. For 2022 he ranked 17 in WAR and 19 in DEF. He was the highest player to come in with a negative DEF rating(-1.5). I don’t follow the Mariners but from what I looked at, any team should move a player with his recent performance to 2B instead of moving these top SS mentioned in the article.
YaySports
I’m not a Mariners fan so I haven’t watched him play much but I’m guessing 2022 was a bit of an anomaly for Crawford. He had 14 DRS and 6 OAA between 2020 and 2021 then plummeted to -3 and -11. That reads like something happened more so than he isn’t a great fielder but again that’s just going off the numbers.
jbigz12
JP was always a plus defender coming through the minors and has a gold glove. I don’t watch a ton of Mariners baseball but it surprised to me to see the metrics turn on him so badly.
I wonder if this is being seen in reality. That was really one of his main strengths.
compassrose
He went into a bad slump and it seemed to affect his fielding. His body language was also not his normal.
compassrose
Those salty Angel fans. I guess they would know what a playoff team is. Not that our track record has been stellar but you don’t see many Seattle fans get on here and make stupid comments like that.
I wonder how salty they will be when Ohtani leaves after next year and comes to Seattle? That would be awesome.
Sunday Lasagna
Those 4 won’t have to move off SS, there are plenty of Teams with holes at SS and among them some of the biggest spenders in the game. If they can get top dollar to play SS they aren’t moving to 2B.
ayrbhoy
Cincyfan85- I get your point re: Crawford’s defense but imo the Industry has yet to have a reliable defensive metric that accurately tells the true story of a players defense. Each one of the metrics have flaws in how they measure a players defense. Besides JP Crawford (imo) was clearly playing through some type of injury that affected his mobility. There’s no reason he can’t improve his SS defense in the 2023 season. Most importantly JP is a team player- if the Org has a chance to sign a Turner or Swanson JP will ABSOLUTELY move to 2nd if he knows it will help sign an impact bat. The biggest hurdle SEA will have in bringing in an elite SS is not JP, it’s trying to convince players like Turner and Swanson to leave their current Division winning rosters.
I don’t think any Seattle fan thinks JP is an elite SS, in fact his own Org knows he is not an elite SS- look at his contract extension: 5 years $51Million thats a fraction of what players like Lindor, Seager or Semien are receiving. You get what you pay for and the Mariners are paying for a SS who’s bottom of the lineup offense has gradually improved each year. You could argue his extension was built on the back of his Gold Glove in the shortened 2020 season. JP will never be a power hitting SS, he just needs to continue being a tough out and getting on base for Julio by taking his BB’s or slapping the ball where they ain’t!
YaySports
Strange take trying to compare the contract extension of a pre arbitration player to that of Free Agent deals… I don’t think anybody thinks Crawford is equal to those guys but this argument is silly all in itself
Irishblade
Move JP to second! He’s not an elite defender. FFS
GMoney2850
Not enough bat for 2B
DTD/ATL1313
He doesn’t have enough bat for SS either, especially with his subpar defense. SS has become more of an offensive position than second base anyways.
LordD99
Pursue SS’s who will play SS and move Crawford.
dirty617water
Kike Hernandez for Kyle Lewis. Baseball trade values says it’s a fair trade. Kike plays 2nd for SEA, Lewis rotates between DH and LF for BOS.
Baller4mlb
Hello we have the the Pirates on line one. They would also like to have a word.. Kevin Newman may be of some interest they say
Cincyfan85
He’s not an every day player on a contender.
NashvilleJeff
Be careful about criticizing Newman, Cincyfan, Samuel blocked me because I laughed at him for saying Newman was the same or better than Dansby Swanson. He then said the same thing about Amed Rosario, lol. After giving me a good internet scolding, he added me to his list of “over 100 Muted” and labeled me an “ankle biter” for my criticisms of his player comps. I’m still shocked at the honor and in awe of his brilliance……………
Mystery Team
He muted me as well and I wear it as a badge of honor
jjd002
Seattle isn’t a real contender.
Selah Rick 2
And your not real baseball fan soooo…
rundmc1981
Pay premium SS to play 2B. Dipito doesn’t take his Land Rover out in the rain either.
hiflew
Why wouldn’t they just pursue a second baseman to play second base? You move a guy off a position when you have two guys on your roster that play the same spot and you can’t deal one of them. You shouldn’t actively sign someone in order to change their position. That fails far more often than it works. Remember when the Rockies gave Ian Desmond a big contract to play 1B despite him never playing the position before? That really didn’t work out well.
qbert1996
Because how many good hitters are 2nd baseman? Most of the time they’re just contact hitters. Your Desmond comparison is not a good one. SS and 2B are basically the same position with SS getting more action due to more right handed hitters.
hiflew
SS and 2B are not the same position. They are drastically different and will be even more so next season when the shift is banned. Just look at Andrelton Simmons who is one of the best defensive SS’s in history, but looked somewhat lost playing second in 2022.
Chester Copperpot
SS and 2B might the most similar defensive positions in baseball. That, or LF/RF.
hiflew
SS and 3B are far more similar than SS and 2B in my opinion. Both left side infielders that face the batter with the same eye. Second baseman face the batter with the opposite eye forward. Eye dominance works about the same way as hand dominance. If you are right eye dominant, you work much better from the left side of the infield. Left eye dominance works much better at second or first.
justinkm19
Worked for Semien.
hiflew
Semien is not a good example because he wasn’t a good SS, he was just a good hitting SS. He was very poor defensively and was probably going to have to move regardless of success.
hiflew
I apologize, I should not have said it was not a good example. That is demeaning and I shouldn’t have said it. I should have said that I didn’t think it was the best example because of Semien’s shortcomings.
Thank_God_Im_Not_Tim_Dierkes
I think you just hit the nail on the head. Your question in turn answers itself. The reason I think Jerry is looking for a SS to play 2B is because he wants to give Crawford another chance to redeem himself, but next year he’ll have a shorter leash and failure to prove he can rebound both offensively and defensively would end in him being moved defensively and/or traded.
My guess would be a return to his GG level defensively and a below average bat and he gets traded to a team that values defense over offense at SS. A return to above average hitting, but below average defense might result in him switching to 2B and the 2B switching to SS. A below average performance in both regards and he gets moved as a salary dump.
The problem with how Jerry manages the team is he waits until something becomes a problem to do something about it. I could see Crawford’s below-average speed being a problem in 2021 and his defense was mid at best, now he’s an absolute liability. Had Dipoto traded Crawford prior to last season or at some point this season during the deadline, he would’ve got a nice return.
As it is now, the Mariners are looking at an okay return, but moreover they could be saving $45M over the next 4 years. I know some are worried about chemistry, but everyone in Seattle was mad when Graveman was traded and now nobody even remembers he was on the team in 2021. The M’s need to dump J.P. while he has value and there’s time for the team to process the change.
JoeBrady
Remember when the Rockies gave Ian Desmond a big contract to play 1B
=============================
It worked out for me. I can imagine the look on the GM’s face when the manager told him that they already had a better SS, 2B, and CF, and that they had no room for a guy they just paid $70M for.
And to be honest, Reynolds was also better at 1st. That was the “Bryant” move for a previous generation.
hiflew
Not even close to a Bryant move. Exact opposite in my opinion. Bryant has been awesome when he was able to play, he just had injury problems. Desmond was the exact opposite. He didn’t get hurt and management felt that he was being paid too much to bench. Luckily the pandemic saved the Rockies the final two years of the Desmond deal.
solaris602
Colten Wong and Jean Segura are the top of the FA 2B market, and neither one moves the needle enough to get DiPoto’s attention.
Chester Copperpot
I doubt Segura would play in Seattle again after his comments about his departure.
debubba
I would be happy if the Mariners would take Rosario from the Guardians. It would be an easy trade to make. All the Guards would ask for is a Big Mac meal with a Diet Coke.
NashvilleJeff
Debubba: Going to give you the same advice I gave Cincy fan. Be careful w/critical assessment of Rosario. Samuel says he “wouldn’t trade Rosario for Dansby Swanson.” Those daring to dispute his player evaluations and other pompous proclamations risk facing the same sad fate I’ve suffered. Samuel labeled me an “ankle biter” and added me to his famous list of “over 100 Muted.” Woe to those who transgress against Samuel.
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
Please don’t let Samuel live in your head rent free. He’s blocked or muted probably 75% of us. He wants to be the only one talking I guess lol.
NashvilleJeff
Samuel’s always worth a laugh, Ig. If he keeps adding to his list, it won’t take him long to peruse the comment sections.
jbigz12
@jeff
Lol. If you don’t agree with him and challenge something he says—here comes the mute!
A shame because he does make some good observations. But you Can’t disagree with any of them or you’re gone!
NashvilleJeff
You’re right jbig. I’ve “liked” some of his thoughts, but woe to those who dare to disagree w/one of them.
jbigz12
Yeah I caught the mute too. Stupid really. He makes some really good analysis at times. But Jesus Christ you gotta be a narcissist to think you’re always right and never accept a disagreement. Cmon guy.
kcmark
Do you prefer you ankles broiled or sautéd? Sorry, I just couldn’t resist.
NashvilleJeff
Lol, roasted over an open fire kcmark………………
JoeBrady
All the Guards would ask for is a Big Mac meal with a Diet Coke.

The Guards win every trade they make, but Rosario is a nice target.
Samuel
debubba;
The Guardians need another starting pitcher. Throw in Logan Gilbert with the “Big Mac meal with a Diet Coke” and they might consider it.
Primitive Screwhead
2.4 WAR Rosario for 3.2 WAR dominant starting pitcher Gilbert? Are you high?
aragon
why not get a 2b that can play ss?
Mystery Team
I think Dipoto wants the bigger bat.
ArmChairGM-
I would get it if Crawford was an elite defender at SS or had such a big bat they didn’t want to upset him by moving him.. but he literally has neither.. move Crawford to 2B and sign Correa or Swanson for SS.
Danny R.
Move Crawford to 2B and sign Correa for SS. He’ll give us that extra edge playing against his old team (HOU).
jjd002
Need more that one player to take out Houston. They finished 16 games back of Houston.
ballgawd
They already have one of those pieces in Castillo.
jjd002
They had him for half a season and still finished 16 games back. They still aren’t close.
bus035
C’mon Jerry. Let Hollander do his job (GM) and move JP to 2nd where his defense and bat will be more palatable. Go get Xander! JP is not a good enough SS and your unwillingness to understand that is going to kill potential future of this franchise.
Also, let Haniger walk and go get Brandon Nimmo to play CF so we can put Julio back in his natural RF position. Go M’s!
Thank_God_Im_Not_Tim_Dierkes
Absolutely not, you don’t make a bad situation worse! Xander Bogaerts will be garbage in a couple years and some poor team will be paying him exorbitant amounts of money to be average at best, remember that he’s already only an average runner, if he loses a step like Crawford, slightly above-average defense becomes below-average to awful defense, quickly!
Bogaerts reeks of Cano 2.0. Sure you’ll get some value out of him for a couple years, but then you’ll be $40M upside down by year four and he’ll want a 7-10 year deal to come to Seattle. He’s better than Cano because he starts at a more difficult position when signed, but with Crawford an albatross and locked in for 4 years as a below-average bat at the keystone, there’d be nowhere to move Bogaerts until 2027! No thanks!
Julio is one of the top 5 defensive CF in baseball and only his lack of experience has held him back. Not only would Nimmo not be a better CF, you don’t move a faster more talented 22-year-old CF to a corner for a 30-year-old CF that is slower, worse defensively, has no base stealing ability or power, and will cost more money because he’s masquerading as a competent CF during free agency!
Nimmo is literally Alex Gordon without any ability to consistently steal a bag.
metslvt17
Nimmo is one of the best on base hitters in baseball. He works counts at the top of the order which is critically important. His defense is good. He will hit 15-20 home runs a year. He’s fast enough. Brandon Nimmo is criminally underrated across baseball.
Kyle T
Bus what? Julio looks great in CF let’s leave him there he is 21..probably hasn’t hit his faster speeds yet either. he still a growing young man…Nimrod over haniger?? I want what you’re smoking!
Mystery Team
Why any team would give Brandon Nimmo a long term deal is beyond me. That dude had his first somewhat healthy season this year and of course it comes during his contract year, big shock there. The guy is a good ball player but he’s a huge injury risk at all times. I’m sure it took everything he had to not spend 80 games on the IL this last season. I have to think for the kind of money he might get there’d be better options.
metslvt17
Not for an outfield position. Nimmo is by far the best available
stroh
Weird. Go get an all-star SS to play 2nd and keep your SS who wouldn’t be a starter on most teams. Genius.
Rsox
Turner has experience at 2B the rest don’t and i have to believe Correa, Swanson, and Bogaerts are probably not willing to change positions at this point in their careers
User 401527550
Depends how much the Mariners are willing to pay them to do it.
Samuel
Turner’s “experience at 2B” was pretty bad if your watched him play. He was totally uncomfortable, and didn’t play well there.
He’s a SS.
I believe his first priority in FA is finding a team to continue playing SS. Would be a bit surprised if he left the Dodgers, but every off-season thing’s I think will never happen….do.
Rsox
I think as some have said here the smarter play might be to move Crawford to 2B and sign one of these big money SS’s to play SS. Right now you have all of winter ball and spring training to get him comfortable and used to the position, unlike bringing in a free agent that you may not sign til February or March and have to get them going right away. Trevor Story looked better as the season went on but defensively his first month and a half at the position was terrible and it effected his offense too.
DW253
Best record since 2003? They literally has the same exact record last year – 2021.
Dustyslambchops23
There’s more of an argument to decrease Crawfords playing time than to ask superior offensive and defensive players to accommodate a position change.
That being said, money talks.
DW253
The fact that JD is actively stating that he’s keeping JP at SS again is insane. Also, didn’t he give the GM job away? How about we let that dude do his job.
DW253
Jerry also said they’d pursue trade options.
What are the odds SD wants to move Tatis Jr.?
xfloydsterx
Go get Turner!
rhswanzey
I don’t think it is realistic at all to expect any of those four players to sign with a team as a starting second baseman. Dipoto should consider value plays like Jurickson Profar or Jose Iglesias. I also wonder if excess pitching for Christian Arroyo wouldn’t be a potentially great fit for SEA/BOS.
Johnnymarty95
Mariners should just save some money and put Abraham Toro at second base. Or they can move Crawford to second, sign one of the FA shortstops, trade Suarez and eat most of his remaining salary for a prospect, and put Toro to be the full time 3B.
hllywdjff
Toro is barely a AAA player! Bum…
bigdaddyhacks
Did you watch any mariners games. Because if you did, you surely wouldn’t not be saying this.
Primitive Screwhead
I watched all of them and am wondering if you did the same. Toro is barely a utility player, and only had that job when Moore and Swaggerty weren’t available.
solaris602
Toro only got playing time this year because they didn’t have any better options. He’s OK in the field and versatile, but he’s a big time offensive liability. Only really produces against HOU, and even that is a stretch.
bloomquist4hof
It’s possible Toro is still decent but this year was so bad I couldn’t see him as more than a backup piece for depth purposes. He went from fan favorite to DFA candidate super quick.
Edp007
Mariners I understand went hard after Semien , maybe they again go after high salaried infielder, Trea Turner fits the mold if the cash is there
ericl
Correa has said that he views himself as a shortstop only. Swanson is better than Crawford & isn’t moving to 2nd in that situation and neither is Bogarts. That leaves Turner. Not sure Turner will be willing to do that either. It makes more sense to move Crawford to 2nd if you sign one of the big four.
dshires4
Just slide your already existing slap hitting, declining defense shortstop over to 2B and sign a superior player. Stop with this nonsense that Crawford is irreplaceable.
GarryHarris
What Jerry Dipoto “prefers” to do likely has nothing to do with the big four SS free agents. Media today always mixes unrelated facts to fit their agenda of the day. It’s simply not Depoto’s MO. He might go after KCR Adalberto Mondesi or one of the NYY SSs. He won’t go after DET Javier Baez and his anchoring price tag but someone else will.
martevious
Sign Trea Turner
Proudveteran
So, Jerry Dipoto thinks that he can land a top-rated shortstop to play 2b, that is crazy! You get the superstar and let him play his position and move JP Crawford. JP’s defense has been declining the past two years {stats prove this}. Why is Jerry in bed with JP? I would rather keep Adam Frazier because he can play multiple positions, and that is what Jerry has said in the past that he wants. Jerry could have made better moves before the deadline and didn’t. He did make a few that helped get into the playoffs, but not good enough to be still playing. I will really be watching this off-season to see if he can put it all together.
saluelthpops
Any chance this is Dipoto publicly giving Crawford the opportunity to come to him and say he’s willing to move to 2B in order to sign a big-name SS?
Perhaps this is an alert to Crawford that the writing is on the wall. Crawford’s pride takes much less of a hit if he gets moved to 2B and it’s portrayed to the public as being “his idea.”
drfelix
Exactly! When dipoto said this yesterday I could tell he was being a little hesitant. He didn’t wNt to give the media any indication he’s giving up on JP. I have know doubt if Dipoto signs one of these top SS guys JP will be the one to offer moving over after a private mtg with dipoto. They will make it look like JP reached out and offered to do that for fan clubhouse appeal … you watch
Cyclonesbb17
Maybe we could look into Bo Bichette?
Mystery Team
I kind of feel like Turner and the Cubs have already been flirting with each other. I just don’t see him in Seattle. I mean the right money can make anything happen but I picture him wearing a Cub’s uniform. Xander doesn’t have the power they probably want plus he’s a tad older. I really think Correa is the best option for them. Correa, Rodriguez, and France would make a nice two three four combo. Bat any one of them at any of the spots it really doesn’t matter. JP Crawford should be moved to second not the incoming better SS. Crawford seems like a cool teammate but those other names are on a different level, a much higher one. They’re all simply much more productive.
Melchez17
Javier Baez on line 1
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
I suppose they could trade for Trevor Story
oot
If the Red Sox are unable to re-sign Bogaerts and then trade Story, they will have a large hole in the middle of their infield.
Many think that Story no longer has the arm for SS, so if Bogaerts walks, the lineup would contain Story 2B, Kiké SS, CF ??. A couple of years down the road, if Mayer and Rafaela develop as hoped, the club might start being a contender again if more than Bello shows up from the minors as pitchers. But then there is Devers.
SJKinMD
There’s been a lot of speculation that Story was signed as insurance for Xander leaving. But if they re-sign Andre and extend Devers, then maybe they trade Story for help in the OF or for pitching, or use the money for Story on another FA.
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
Jerry is saying these things because JP is the spiritual leader/guru of the clubhouse and all around team mascot, mentor, heart and soul of the squad. He offers all these intangibles and is very valuable for comraderie and clubhouse cohesion. I watched plenty of Mariners games and never had an issue with JP’s defense. He always made the tough plays. It’s his bat that can a bit frustrating at times. With all of that being said, I think he would be just fine at 2nd base.
mike127
I agree Ig—-being a Cub fan here, I think Nico Hoerner has a chance to be a gold glove finalist this year and proved that he have a solid offensive season at the same time. That said—Nico would sprint the extra 60-70 feet from the Cub dugout to play second base if a high profile shortstop came aboard.
If the Mariners are truly married to “JP is our shortstop” they are really limiting the free agent range that they have. Bogaerts, Correa and Swanson certainly aren’t moving and I suspect Turner did it in 2021 knowing that the shortstop position would most likely be his with LA in 2022.
ballgawd
I’m a Mariners fan. JP is a great teammate, but his numbers aren’t what they need to be to be locked at SS. He needs to show Jerry he’s truly team first and tell Jerry to move him to 2B and go get the stud SS. Now that’s a team first move Mariners fan would love him even more for.
Fred Park
@Ignorant Son, most of these guys commenting here have no idea whatsoever about the important intangible things you just talked about.
I happen to have played some baseball a long time ago, so I have seen it and can relate.
I don’t hold it against these other guys, they are just normal fans like most other fans.
If it weren’t for all the ordinary excitable people there would be no baseball.
What a horrible thought.
NashvilleJeff
Even worse than you think Fred. Most of the contributors to team fan sites diss those who believe that intangibles play a role in baseball. They claim that “because intangibles can’t be quantified by statistical analysis, they don’t exist.” Quickest way to get sneered at on a fan site is to express belief in anything not measured by sabermetric analysis. Want to get scoffed at? Mention clubhouse chemistry. Sit back and watch them rage against that “concept.”
Fred Park
I hear that, Jeff.

Clubhouse chemistry is very important. And if Crawford moves to 2B, he will still be in the clubhouse, and he will still be on the field. If the team continues to do well, maybe even do better next year with him at 2B, I believe he would still be happy. I’d never suggest they get of JP, as his leadership qualities can’t be quantified. I just hope he’s willing to take one for the team and move off SS. This is the kind of thing I would hope can happen on teams that want to make it to the World Series. I believe good leaders will think “team first”.
Primitive Screwhead
No one hates good clubhouse chemistry. It’s just that some fans believe “good clubhouse chemistry leads to winning”, and people who know better understand “winning generally produces good clubhouse chemistry”.
Good clubhouse chemistry is a byproduct, not an ingredient.
Fred Park
@Primitive Screwhead, I’m pretty sure it goes both ways.
Pads Fans
If Crawford is truly a leader, he would publicly say he is willing to move off SS for the good of the team.

Javier Baez you are a Seattle Mariner!
angt222
Javy Báez would probably be available if Seattle ate his remaining contract lol.
Armaments216
The Mariners aren’t taking on that Baez contract if they can get one of these 4 guys for anything comparable. Detroit would need to eat some of the cost or throw in something else.
Pads Fans
They can’t. None of the 4 are signing for less than 7-8 years and $28-30 million and Bogaerts and Correa at $33-35 million.
Baez was roughly equal to Crawford in overall value and he had a bad season.
Armaments216
That’s what they’ll want but there’s not enough market.. at least one and maybe more will end up settling for shorter term deals or lower AAV’s with opt outs.
jbigz12
Dansby Swanson will not get 7 years at 28 + million per. Particularly in a season with 3 better SS’s on the market.
Baez and Story didn’t wind up with that last year & both had better career resumes in a weaker class.
BashBroJoe
Probably not going after the big SS’s. Seattle May just be dumb enough to go get Baez or try to pry Peraza away from the yanks. I could see them overpaying for Swanson though who I imagine will be the cheapest of the big SS options.
jbigz12
Baez is unmovable.
They’d have to eat 40% of that deal.
kws001
Jerry’s a smart guy, but I don’t get this for the same reason that most people don’t. if you can get an elite shortstop to go to Seattle that wants to play his position, you have to do it. End of story…
rmullig2
Mariners should go after D.J. LeMaheiu. Yankees have a glut at middle infield and are probably looking to move him before his 10 and 5 kicks in. He’s been hobbled by injuries but a $60M commitment is better than having to go to $200M for one of the elites SS’s.
dirty617water
Kyle Lewis for Kike Hernandez. Kike plays 2nd for SEA while Lewis rotates between DH and LF for BOS. Fair trade according to mlb trade values simulator.

DiPoto’s devotion to this mediocre SS he’s got is really quite remarkable. So out of character for him. But a good reminder that the people who run major league teams are human beings, subject to their own sense of loyalty and emotional bias. They’re not machines running roto leagues.
Slothcliff Hokum
I love how the Mariners have positioned themselves to be good for a while under Dipoto, but this is just flat-out stupid. If Crawford is a good teammate, he’ll give his team a better chance to win by volunteering to move to second base. I love Crawford’s glove at shortstop, but none of the guys they would sign are slouches at the position, and they are all much better than JP with the bat. I think it’s a safe bet JP would still field well at second. The team needs hitters, and that’s what Crawford is not. Come on Jerry, come on JP, don’t limit the M’s options!
Pads Fans
Good luck with that Jeff. Asking players that are all better than the incumbent to move position is not an effective way to get them to come play for you.
When your 27 year old incumbent is barely league average it would make more sense to move him and bring in a proven player that is far above average.
Of course, if you are willing to pay a premium well above what other teams will pay to entice an elite shortstop to move positions, then you might have a shot. 10/370 for Correa, Bogaerts, or Turner?

Pads: After scrolling the comments twice looking for the “Jeff” that you’re replying to. I can’t find anyone named “Jeff” that made the comment you’re disagreeing with. It’s definitely not me, so I assume that you’re talking about someone else. I certainly didn’t say anything about “asking players that are all better than the incumbent to move position” because I don’t agree w/the premise.
Pads Fans
Trying to be cute and blew it. Jerry Dipoto.
rememberthecoop
Paying a premium for a position (SS) but then moving the player to a somewhat lesser valued position is kind of foolish.
rememberthecoop
It’s not foolish because I don’t feel they would be able to play 2B – I would think any solid SS could handle the keystone very well, in fact – but from a financial standpoint.

So, welcome to Seattle Elvis Andrus?
bloomquist4hof
This was my immediate thought lol!
bloomquist4hof
They need a CF or RF too so maybe the big bat could be an outfielder. I could see even re-signing Frazier or giving 2B to Moore if they can get a good OF or conversely get a good 2B/SS and re-sign Haniger. I think they’ll be in on every OF and 2B/SS they can and do something like that. One good piece, an OK piece and a little bullpen work. They should work on depth as well especially with the infield.
SodoMojo90
Crawford needs to go. He was a detriment to the team this year outside of April.
Happy2Engage
What he should have said is that he’s not going after any of the big name FA SS this off-season.
Larry Bernandez 1324IM
Fine, play 2 shortstops
drfelix
One option no one is talking about is signing Bell to play 1B and move France to 2B, that option would be 1/2 the price of signing Bogaert or Turner. But I like the turner option at SS and move JP to 2B
hllywdjff
The Mariners have a couple of young possible stud SS in their system (Young and Celestin (if he signs in January as expected he projects to be another Wander Franco) so they may keep Crawford as a place holder for the next 4-5 years until one of those guys comes up but then the issue is where do you go big to improve the offense? They need a superstar level player and the only guy that would fulfill both a power bat and OF which they need is Aaron Judge as much as I would love to see them get Trea Turner I don’t think they will spend $300 million for a shortstop if they wanted to do that they would have signed Corey Seager..
Primitive Screwhead
Dipoto never tips his hand ahead of time: I can’t recall him ever being publicly down on a player before any deal has happened. His talk about JP should be read in that context. When it comes down to it, Dipoto will make what he thinks is the winning baseball move, and that isn’t swayed by clubhouse feelings. Proof is the Graveman trade.
