Yankees lefty Aroldis Chapman will be left off the club’s ALDS roster after skipping a team workout on Friday. Manager Aaron Boone told reporters this morning, saying that the veteran lefty was scheduled to throw live batting practice on Friday but missed it with “not an acceptable excuse,” per Lindsey Adler and Chris Kirschner of The Athletic.
General manager Brian Cashman also spoke with the media, with Bryan Hoch of MLB.com relaying about two minutes of video on Twitter. Cashman said that the official roster decisions have not been made yet but that Chapman has taken himself out of consideration, explaining that the southpaw flew to Miami for the club’s off-day between Wednesday’s regular season finale and a scheduled workout on Friday. However, he didn’t return for that workout and has now been fined by the team, in addition to being told not to return for the time being.
Chapman certainly wasn’t guaranteed a spot on the roster based on his performance this season and Cashman indeed said that an element of the workout was for the lefty to throw a live bullpen as part of competing for a spot. However, he’s now made it a moot point with his truancy. Since Chapman is an impending free agent, this news creates the possibility that Chapman has thrown his final pitch as a Yankee.
After pitching to a then-career-high 3.36 ERA in 55 1/3 innings in 2021, Chapman hoped to reestablish himself as a premier closer before entering free agency in his age-35 season. Instead, today’s debacle is the latest development in Chapman’s saga-filled 2022 season.
In the final year of a three-year, $48MM extension signed after the 2019 season, Chapman has begun to show his age. The long-time closer lost his role at the back of the bullpen to Clay Holmes after a month into the season, giving up six earned runs in 5 2/3 innings in May before left Achillies tendinitis forced a trip to the 15-day IL for the entirety of June.
Upon his return in July, Chapman continued to underperform, allowing 10 earned runs in 16 2/3 innings before landing on the 15-day IL again, this time due to a leg infection stemming from a tattoo. Chapman returned in mid-September and showed signs of improving, giving up only 2 runs over his final 5 2/3 innings. Collectively, Chapman finished the 2022 regular season with a 4.46 ERA in 36 1/3 innings.
Whether or not Chapman returns to the club for a later postseason round, it’s fair to wonder how much interest he will have in free agency this winter. Though he was once one of the most dominant relief pitchers in the game, he’s coming off a poor season and has compounded those concerns with off-field problems. In addition to this year’s issues, Chapman was also given a 30-game suspension in 2016 for domestic violence.

Time to take out the trash.
LordD99
His value is way down based on performance over the past year. Adding in *additional* character issues won’t increase his marketability. His next pitch will not be in Yankee pinstripes.

LordD, incredibly embarrassing look for him. These kind of antics make me think he has the mind of a sharp 12 year old.

Exactly what I was thinking. This is the best news I have gotten in a long time. He and the team have forgotten that a baseball thrown by him is a
deadly missile and if done outside the stadium would be a felony charge.
I was a Yankees fan until that pitch that nearly killed Mike. I watched the
Yankees back when Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris played for them. I made excuses when people said things and overlooked other things for over 60 years. I am a native Floridian, and there were no baseball teams south of Baltimore until 1966 and that was only to Atlanta.
I let go of bags of Yankee junk. I kept the ball Mickey Mantle signed for me at spring training in Tampa. and other things related to him. I dumped World Series Jerseys, T-Shirts etc in a homeless shelter.
Yankee Clipper
Yeah, the person/people most disappointed this happened? Cashman? No. LeBooner? Nope. The Yankees collectively? Try again. The Yankees fans? Never!
Jose Altuve…… as he just watched his dream of another center-cut slider going over over the wall in walk-off fashion go up in smoke. I have it on good authority Altuve’s wife is cradling him in her arms like an infant while he watches “The Notebook” over and over, with his little legs dangling out of a Correa jersey (like a scene from Deadpool).

Baton down the hatches my man the chaos storm is coming to blow the orange juice box away. Good luck!!! Hottest team in baseball about to be all up in your arse. I was there earlier this year when we shelled Verlander for 4 dongs and 6 er; the stage is set for another old man beat down. NO MERCY
jjd002
Hottest team in baseball resides in Cleveland, not Seattle. I also watched Seattle act like their World Series was going on in the midseason and proceeded to lose 6 of their next 7 to Houston. And how did you guys do the rest of the time against Verlander?
.
Clipper, “his little legs” dangling out!! Hahahahahhahahahahaha Love it.
SeeGilley
Sorry Clipper but that wasn’t his little leg dangling out of his jersey. Look closer you doof!
Bright Side
Difficult? The guy walked off two seasons. The only difficulty stems from Cashman’s stubbornness. After Chapman’s first walkoff, he had the gall to threaten an opt out if he didn’t get an extension. I would have told him to go ahead, opt out, and don’t let the door hit you on the way out. Cashman caves and gives Chapman a year extension. This season is that extension. $18mill wasted. Stubbornness can be expensive.
RyanD44
Dude has been an entitled jerk for a long time, but his talent always allowed everything to be brushed under the rug. Now that he’s not the elite reliever he once was, it’s much easier to give him the boot.
The sad part is, if he was pitching at an elite level, no chance they leave him off the roster.
LordD99
If he was pitching at an elite level, there was little chance he’d miss the workout. I wonder if he had already heard he wasn’t going to make the first round roster.
PipptyPoppitygivemetheZoppity
That is such a strong assumption. Do you work for the NYY?
LordD99
Yes.
corrosive23
Cashman said he was asked if he was in or out, and while he said he was in, his attitude showed he wasn’t.
mlb.com/news/aroldis-chapman-misses-workout-off-ya…
“When you add everything up, it’s not surprising,” Cashman said. “There’s some questions about whether he’s all-in or not for a little while. He’s maintained verbally that he’s in, but at times actions don’t match those words. So when he didn’t show on Friday, obviously at first there were a lot of people upset and caught off guard.”
Joe says...
There was a lot of speculation he wouldn’t make the post season roster.
LordD99
@Joe, as I’m sure you know, there was even media reports that he was under consideration to be be dropped from the active roster in the final week of the season as they had multiple players returning. They *wanted* him to show he was worth a spot. Not sure he ever did, but there was still a chance he could be added for future, longer series. A player right on the bubble doesn’t help himself with selfish acts like this.
Joe says...
LordD yeah I heard about that. He’s a hard guy to root for. I hope he’s made his last pitch for the Yankees.
RunDMC
Even if the rumor floating around the clubhouse is that he may miss the ALDS roster, with Holmes not 100%, they’d need him more than would normally – and if you believe Cashman/Boone stating that the roster wasn’t finalized yet, he needed to show, at the very least, and he most likely would have made the roster. A strong showing in the playoffs could make a lot forget about his tumultuous season, but after this, like the infected tattoo that landed him on the IL – it will be hard to forget.
NWMarinerHawk
@Lord I think you are spot on. Most of the time in these scenarios, I weigh on the side of “we don’t know so don’t assume;” but in this specific instance, given Chapmans quirky and aloof behavior in the past; I think it’s extremely reasonable to believe that’s what’s going on here.

There’s really no excuse. Most of these well-paid vets fly private. A-Rod use to fly privately even though the team had chartered flights in between cities. He never missed a team workout. (A friend of mine used to handle his bookings with her company.)

I think the Yankees have learned their lesson when it comes to handing out big money to RPs
rct
I would think they’d try to roll with Clay Holmes and save themselves the $15-20-ish million a year that Diaz will cost. They could also gamble that King returning from injury or Marinaccio cutting down on the walks. Their money would be better spent on either retaining Judge or improving their hitting.
drasco036
It blows my mind how yankee fans think they have this endless supply of money…
“We have plenty of money to re-sign Judge and Rizzo…”
Check the books, the Yankees have stretched their budget pretty thin.
Yankeepride88
I mean, Yankees bring in more revenue than any other team in baseball. Plus, they have Chapman, Britton, Taillon, and Green coming off their books this off-season.
Yankees have enough money to go out and get whatever they really want if we are being honest.
kiwimlbfan
Dude, you forgot the word “some”, as in some Yankee fans. The reality is that they did this with pieces like Ellsbury, Stanton, etc and it didn’t/won’t end well. I run a business and understand the buy all the high end players model is not sustainable, so please don’t tar us all with the same brush.
P.S – look at all the people on here who were critical about the Montgomery/Bader trade. Monty had a great 7 starts for STL but it got worse. Let’s see how that trade ages…
Maya

YankeesBleacherCreature
@drasco036 Being the second most valuable franchise in pro sports, yes, the Yankees bring in an endless supply of money. However, ownership for over the past decade has been operating under “artificial” financial restraint using the CBT as an excuse to limit spending (aka pocketing more profits). Can you honestly say that they shouldn’t perennially have the highest payroll and not be behind the Dodgers and Mets? They certainly can afford it.
mrmackey
I hope not. Let it be King or Holmes and save the $$.

Distraction.
Dumpster Divin Theo

Indianfan
My guess is he skipped the workout after being told in advance he wouldn’t be on the playoff roster. The Yankees are using the skipped workout as an excuse.
DTD/ATL1313
The Yankees didn’t need an excuse to leave him off the roster. He’s been terrible and didn’t earn a spot anyways.
TrillionaireTeamOperator
I remember I think it was last year Chapman was on a historic run for the first few weeks of the season and was racking up saves with a 0.00 ERA through like 20 or 45 games, something like that and then he hurt his nail and he was never the same.
Then either earlier this year or late last year when his ERA had ballooned and he ‘d become what he is now and it was clear it was over for him, he suggested in the media he’d be *very* open to an extension with the Yankees at his current level of pay- like 1 year/$19M or 2 years/$39M or whatever it was and I was kind of shocked, but I think he knew then it was over, he’d lost the precision to go along with the speed and he was maybe hoping the Yankees would extend him super casually again like they had before, where they gave him 5 years $86m and then a 1 year/$18M, which got convolutedly converted into whatever this last deal counts as? 3 years/$48M, I guess?
Anyway- it’s fascinating. I think he knew after the injury last year that it was over, but hoped he could use proverbial smoke and mirrors- fast pitches and dumb luck- to extend his career and bank an extra $40M before retiring one way or another and it was too obvious to pull off that financial coup.
I’ve seen his lifestyle on IG during the lockdowns and I wonder what will happen to his entourage, I wonder if he’s got a financial plan to invest or to put himself on a budget since he ain’t gonna be making $17.333M a year going forward.

Aroldis is gonna get 1/10. Just based on the fact that he still pumps 100 and has 300 career saves.
Edp007
Always been my opinion of Aroldis, failed starter because no brains basically , God gave him an arm , took advantage of it , one inning , just throw hard. Many times still a nightmare on the mound. Overrated closer.
Bad teammate. Bad person.
ThisIsTheYear
All true
RobM
I guess I can default to the “addition by subtraction” theme, but I’m not sure that’s entirely the case considering the state of the Yankees pen. At minimum, they’d probably want to keep him as an option if they advance. Never know what other injuries will occur. He’s now made it more difficult to add him. Both Boone and Cashman didn’t really want to completely shut the door, likely for that reason, but at the same time, their responses, their pauses, and the looks on their faces made it clear they really want nothing to do with him.
His poor sportsmanship and his past failures in the postseason can mean only one. Baseball being baseball means he’ll be on the mound, striking out the side in game 7 of the World Series.
Joe says...
Cashman didn’t come out and say it but his comments seemed definitive to me. Especially when he questioned Chapman’s commitment to the team this year.
RobM
Yeah, I can’t argue with that, Joe. He went back and even brought up the tattoo situation, something he didn’t even address heavily when it happened. He indicated he’s leaving it to Boone, but he also made it clear where he stood without stating in. Cashman’s range of emotions publicly are very tight, meaning there’s little range, be he’s happy (I think he’s happy on occasion!) or disgusted. He trended more toward the latter here.
UWPSUPERFAN77

.
Haven’t seen this guy throw in like 2 years. How hard does he throw these days? Is he walking everyone? What is his deal? I am guessing he is walking everyone.
RobM
I’m pretty sure he hit 102 mph this year, and he is up in the 97-100 range consistently. He’s no longer 105 Chapman, but there’s still plenty of gas in the arm. Has a good breaking pitch. He can still on occasion look devastating, but he’s lost all consistency and, strangely, he’s lost confidence. He’s afraid at times to throw his fastball.
Someone will give him a shot because the arm is still there. Not sure what’s going on in the head.
.
Rob, Appreciate the rundown. Doesn’t sound full blown Trevor Rosenthal but probably a minor case of the yips. I would imagine one way or another he has multiple takers/buyers like you say..
bwmiller
With Chapman, I wonder how much losing the closer’s role to Clay Holmes has to do with it? I’m guessing quite a bit even though it dragged out the entire season. Chapman was an all star closer in 2021 and has been the closer every season of his career since 2012. Closer’s never take kindly to losing their slot.
Last year when the Cubs traded Kimbrel to the White Sox, it was a real issue between Kimbrel and Hendriks, and Kimbrel pitched like a dog the entire time he was with the Sox.
It will likely be a factor in Chapman’s FA, I doubt he wants to be in a setup role.
mrmackey
90% of his problems are half mental. He doesn’t have the same confidence in his fastball, even though he has been topping 100 MPH with it.
He had developed a splitter too that he was using to great effect to start 2021. Baseball reference is puking up 500 errors ATM, but IIRC he had close to a 0 ERA to start 2021 for 2-3 months. Then the sticky stuff ban went in to place and he’s been a wild, home run prone wreck ever since.
Some team will sign him though to an incentive laden one year deal.
Maya
I think losing the closer role will be a big issue for him. He thought he was Mariano Rivera. Not in this lifetime! No one will ever be that guy. Chapman thinks far too much of himself and I hope he does not pitch again for anyone.
.
A guy with his build, arm stength, should be able to throw nasty junk and be effective in the Show for 10 more years. What is going on on here??

Getting back to baseball…..
The Guardians have a disproportionate percentage of LH hitters. If Chapman has anything left, he could have proved helpful – even with other LH guys available out of the pen.
Francona will use this to his advantage. Wouldn’t be surprised to see the Yankees find a loophole to get Chapman back on the roster if things aren’t going their way.
Might add – I didn’t think the young Guardians would win even one game of the playoffs, but thought the experience would do them good. They’re playing with house money this upcoming series.

That makes sense Clipper and Chapman hit the night club gets to bed a bit late and with his paid escort. Nothing prettier than a true blond with a great tan.
They spend the afternoon on the beach before their flight leaves. Clipper says that was fun let’s do it again tonight. Chapman says he has to get back for his BP session. Clipper nah that doesn’t matter you are fine. So they do it again and Clipper just smiles. His work is done time for the Yankees to do their business.
This is a serious question because I have heard Jr is not nearly as tough as the old man. What do you think the old man would have done after the tattoo debacle and after this?
Joe says...
With the way he’s pitched in big games, George would have gotten rid of Chapman long before the tattoo incident.

His wake-up call was when he lost his closer’s role in June to Clay Holmes who makes 1/18th of his salary.

Yeah, but arguably more important is the fact that his Yankees teammates knew he needed the work. They knew he was competing for a postseason run with them – what does this say to them? I’d imagine it’s pretty insulting.

It appears that his lack of control extends beyond the mound. I didn’t want him coming into a playoff game and loading the bases anyway, so I won’t miss him at all. But be aware that the front office and Boone haven’t definitively stated that he won’t pitch in the postseason. The rules allow them to alter the roster before each series. If I had to guess though, I’d guess that he’s thrown his last pitch in pinstripes.

Well, the Yankees have never cared about character. Whatever it takes to win. Which is a real shame because they have had really classy players come through there. But showing this guy the door is the best possible move right now. Probably carry a weapon onto a plane like another ex-Yankee closer who was equally despicable. They rode that horse as long as they could. Paid him massive bucks. But his absence makes it no harder to root against the Yankees. Winning above charactor. A big sign right above the clubhouse door. ClevelandSpidersFromMars
Actually, there’s another way to look at this. If Chapman’s agent already informed him that the Yankees will be letting him go this winter, he may have concluded that it could lower his value if a) he actually played and pitched badly with a million eyes on him, b) he sat forlornly in the bullpen and never got the call, or c) was left off the alds by the team’s decision. It seems entirely possible that going awol might be his choice as the best 2023 contract move.

Rumor has it that a petition signed by Cleveland fans has accumulated nearly 20 thousand “X’s” demanding MLB use whatever legal remedies to force Chap back onto the roster.

He should hang out with Puig…sounds like they’d be instant BFFs.

Now, do Hicks, IKF, and Marwin.
Bright Side
I’ve had this guy pegged. Chapman wants to pitch only on save opportunities. Otherwise, he gets passive aggressive. Back in June against the White Sox, in a game which the Yankees couldn’t hit a lick, Judge hit a late inning HR, to tie the game 1-1. Then Boone puts in Tattoo and I’m thinking he’s going to give up a HR and put the Yankees behind. You can guess the rest. $18mil stupid tax. Well done Cashman.

Good riddance. Addition by subtraction

Better off the roster than serving up home run balls.
