Freddy Peralta hasn’t pitched since September 8 due to right shoulder fatigue, but the Brewers right-hander told MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy and other reporters that he believes he’ll be back before the regular season is over, given how well Peralta has felt after preliminary throwing sessions. The next step will be for Peralta to throw off of a mound, but it seems possible that he might not miss much time beyond the 15-day minimum stint on the injured list.
After an All-Star season in 2021, Peralta has pitched only 70 1/3 innings this year due to his current shoulder issue, as well as a posterior strain in that same right shoulder that cost him over two months of action. Even with these health woes, Peralta has still posted a 3.45 ERA, and the Brewers can use all the help they can get as they fight for a playoff berth.
More updates on other injury situations from around the National League…
- One pitcher who won’t be returning in 2022 in Alex Wood, as Giants manager Gabe Kapler told reporters (including Evan Webeck of the Bay Area News Group) that Wood has been shut down for the remainder of the season. Wood went onto the 15-day injured list at the start of September due to a left shoulder impingement, and since he hasn’t yet been cleared to throw, the Giants opted to keep the veteran southpaw on the sidelines. Wood will finish his second season in San Francisco with a disappointing 5.10 ERA over 130 2/3 innings, though that ERA was somewhat inflated by a poor finish — with his shoulder injury hampering his effectiveness, Wood had a 7.89 ERA over his final three outings and 12 1/3 innings. Wood is owed $12.5MM in 2023, the final season of the two-year free agent he signed to rejoin the Giants last winter.
- With Zack Wheeler tentatively slated to return to the Phillies rotation on Wednesday, interim manager Rob Thomson told reporters (including Alex Coffey of the Philadelphia Inquirer) said that the Phils will stick with their same rotation order. This means that rookie left-hander Bailey Falter will retain his starting job, and Noah Syndergaard will be used as a piggyback starter behind Wheeler. Syndergaard’s next actual start is slated for October 1, when the Phillies have a doubleheader against the Nationals.

Good move by RT. Falter simply has been better than Thor.
VonPurpleHayes
Very true. Falter has been a pleasant surprise.

He actually pitcher well today vs Atlanta. Modeled his delivery off of sandy koufax

Minus the unhittable heater and drop dead curve ball…oh yeah, and the 382k’s…

By era? sure
By FIP? The story is the exact opposite
Tough to give up a 1/1 guy (plus more) and not use the return player to his full potential
Rsk3228
Let’s not pretend this 1/1 was in our long-term plans. After Marsh was picked up, Moniak was irrelevant. We were lucky to get even Thor for him.
Ronk325
I assume the 1/1 guy you’re talking about is Moniak. I think we’ve seen enough from him to know that he should have never gone 1/1 and will never be more than a 4th outfielder

“By FIP? The story is the exact opposite.”
On the other hand, his SIERA as a starter is 3.84, his K/BB is 5.09 (17th rank among starters with at least 60 IP), his LOB% is 80.8% (18th rank), and his BB% is 4.3% (8th rank).
One stat like FIP doesn’t tell the whole story, and his xFIP as a starter is 4.12.

Maybe it’s just me, but Gabe Kapler seems like a Dr. Oz type of guy. By that I mean thinking that some random berry could cure all your ailments. I could 100% see him selling some MLM thing in the clubhouse, especially to players on the IL.

This is a weird post, but I actually agree. Kapler’s a nutty dude.
BeansforJesus
A post to match the man.

I loved when they’d roast Kapler on 97.5 the fanatic. Great stuff…
Joeyg39
It’s too bad Philly got rid of him. He was a little too unrelatable to that somewhat Neanderthal fan base. Take it from me having lived in South Philly for 40 years. They would have preferred someone like Kruk or Mitch Williams to manage. Going out to the mound with several hoagie stains on their uniform would have given them a ton of street cred and forgiveness…

He is a free thinking health nut that is prepared to go left field. The funny thing is that in 2022, taking a more natural approach to your health is seen as nutty.

Go natural dawg. Once I reach level 5 asbestos chakra dilation, I switch to lead baths. Another naturally occurring thing people refuse to open their third eye for. Once my skin is fully lead-ified, I will be completely protected for when our alien saviors send their asteroid.
I’m not burning, thanks to Mother Nature.

I’ve never heard anything about Kapler recommending weird herbal remedies. Do you have some link to an article about that?
On his own website, he seems the opposite of how you portray him. He’s into meat, eggs and coffee:
kaplifestyle.com/category/nutrition/
BeansforJesus
I said he seems like the type of guy to do that. I’m a card-carrying platinum member of kaplifestyle so I don’t need any help finding the “good word”.
i forgot to update my excel workbook where I hyperlink the source to every comment I make. I’ll go back through to this week to update all source data.
I think it came from a lemonparty.org.

You seem upset at being asked for a supportive rationale for your mockery of Kapler. Why’s that?
BeansforJesus
Would you prefer mean spirited jokes? I’m not upset at all. Why do you take offense for him? Did I call him a bad person? A roid user?
If you didn’t agree with my how he “seemed” then you could have thought “no” or even commented “no” if you wanted. Do opinions or observations needs “receipts” or only when it’s one you don’t like?
Poster formerly known as . . .
You compared Kapler to a notorious quack doctor, a description of him that I never heard before and wanted to know more about, so I asked you where you got it from. Not sure why that upsets you.
BeansforJesus
What notorious quack doctor? I didn’t “compare” anything. I literally just made up treatments. Can I market these bad boys?
Again, not upset and not sure why you’re getting so emotional about this? Why are you getting so upset about Gabe Kapler jokes that you have to deflect your rage (that you’ve created for his sake) towards me?
You never heard this description because I made it up you numpty. Everyone who read it understood that, except you. You decided to white knight for the dude. Sorry I upset you.

‘What notorious quack doctor? I didn’t “compare” anything.’
You do realize that your comments are still visible, right?

BTW, your prickly, sarcastic response to my simple question about where your description of Kapler as “a Dr. Oz type of guy” came from is still visible too, so it’s silly to resort to the “I’m not mad — you’re mad!” routine. I haven’t expressed any anger at you.

The Phillies need to start hitting, STAT…
VonPurpleHayes
Offense is dead. Lots of injuries or guys just returning. No one is in their groove and there isn’t much time left.
El Duderino
That series with the Braves has made me download Drizly.
Joeyg39
That series in a microcosm was emblematic in the light year separation in organizational approach. Braves stress home grown salary controlled organizational talent over high priced payroll stressing free agents. The Braves have had their share of bust free agents…Ozuna, Uggla, BJ Upton. But the Phillies spent $2000m on Schwarber/Castellanos that have yielded a .9war. The Braves on the other hand have developed home grown talent that simply produces.
El Duderino
So for those in the TL;DR community, that’s why I downloaded Drizly.
VonPurpleHayes
@Joeyg39 To be fair, the Phillies free agent approach has been tremendously successful until this year. Wheeler, Harper and Realmuto have been stellar signings. The Phillies weakness was not having enough homegrown talent. This year, that’s changing a bit. Stott in particular has been great.
Schwarbs and Castellanos have been a bit of a let down. Schwarber is what he is, a streaky power guy. Unfortunately, he’s streaking the wrong way at the wrong time, but when he’s on, he’s exceptional. Nicky C has been a gigantic letdown.
Anyway, summing up my post, you can’t really blame the Phillies problems on bad FA signings. They haven’t had many of those until this season. Drafting and development are the key issues, but I think they’re trending up in that regard. Time will tell.
Joeyg39
Almost $570m committed to three players you mentioned who are in their 30’s… with,up to now,not one playoff appearance. Remember what Ryan Howard’s contract turned into? You’re right in that the Phils look to have a gem or two in the minors, namely Painter. But more often than not, those huge contracts turn into albatross’s…
Bart Harley Jarvis
Joeyg39,
Since Ryan Howard wasn’t a free agent, wouldn’t Marcell Ozuna’s contract be a better example of a disastrous free agent signing?
Joeyg39
I said Ozuna’s was a disaster. But Atl is the Gold Standard in terms of locking up young core talent long term. My point was between Wheeler, Harper, Realmuto, Schwarber and Wheeler you have roughly $770m committed. That’s unsustainable and not a recipe for winning long term. I think that’s fairly obvious.
Joeyg39
Sorry, left our Castellanos in that group as well…
Bart Harley Jarvis
Yeah, the fact Ozuna’s still on the roster is a real head scratcher. He’s the ultimate piece of stih, even by dangerous nights crew standards.
metsie1
@VonPurpleHays Sorry but you lost me at “in particular Stott’s been great”. Come on now. Are you referring to Bryson Stott who is hitting .235 with an OPS of .657 and an OBP of .297???
I take it your being overly hyperbolic but we must have different ideas of what “great” is.
Bart Harley Jarvis
I’m thinking VPH is talking about progressive improvement. From where Bryson Stott was in May-June to his current level of play, he’s been looking better with each game.
Joeyg39
“Stott’s been great ” is akin to being the smartest kid in summer school. .235 average now compared to .170 back in June is what I think he was referring to. Tbh he has played good defense and gotten several huge hits for the Phils, although .235 wouldn’t necessarily reflect that. I’ve seen it since I actually live in Philly.
Bart Harley Jarvis
Constant improvement is what you’re looking for. Take a look at Dansby Swanson’s first season for comparative purposes.
VonPurpleHayes
I actually think the big contract albatross thing isn’t true for big market clubs. None of these deals prevented them from signing anyone else. Even the Ryan Howard deal which aged terribly didn’t necessarily prevent the Phils from signing anyone else. The problem is homegrown talent. You develop that, and you can spend around it. Phillies have gotten very little from theor homegrown talent until recently.
VonPurpleHayes
@metsie You’re looking at those numbers in a vacuum. Look at Stott’s progress since the All-Star break. Look at his at bats and his defense. Guy is legit and has tremendous potential.
money
Harper is cold right now. He makes the offense go. Whether it’s nagging injuries or just fatigue that’s the story.. Still he needs some supporting hitters like Hoskins,. Where the hell is Darrick Hall? I think we could use him right now more than Danny Sands as a third string catcher????
SportsFan0000
Great moves by Dombrowski to change the culture, players and Phillies team!
His teams just win wherever he goes!
Giving Rob Thompson the manager’s job was a great move!
Thompson is playing the young Phillies talent instead of favoring veterans like Girardi.
Emerging young star in CF Brandon Marsh was another excellent move/trade by Dave D.
Beefing up the bullpen and rotation depth checked off many of the needed boxes.
Compare last years Phillies team struggling to play .500 Ball
with this years team that is something like 16 games over 500 and solidly in the playoffs picture is a difference between night and day!
Dombrowski will definitely get votes for NL Executive of the Year!
Joeyg39
Bro…you can’t be serious… Exec of the year? Brandon Marsh emerging young star? What metric points to that? If he’s close to being a star then what is Michael Harris II? Willie Mays?
As for Dombrowski, he is known for quickly improving teams while destroying its future in some cases…
VonPurpleHayes
There’s too much hyperbole in SportsFan’s post, and after the recent slump the Phils are looking like same old Phillies, but I do get where he’s coming from. Marsh is hitting around .300 since coming to Philly, and he’s a great glove in CF. DD improved the Phillies without giving up any of their big pitching prospects. I think there’s a bright future in Philly, but they aren’t close to the Braves or Mets.
money
Sorry that was Donny Sands. Still a waste of roster space..

A sad reminder in the middle of all Zaidi’s daily dumpster diving that the Giants already have well over $30M committed next year to DeSclafani, Wood, and La Stella.
