Those deals never happen. The team usually just puts the guy on waivers. Teams value prospects too much anymore to give them away because they stupidly paid a guy for 3 more years then they should have.
I could see them doing something similar to wait the Padres did with Hosmer. Attach some 20-30 organization ranked prospect and eat some of the salary for a prospect it the 10-15 range.
The American League clubs heading to the playoffs look far more impressive and talented than anything in the National League this season, particularly Houston, Seattle, and Cleveland.
