Judge is batting .306/.393/.690 at home. He’s batting .298/.413/.674 on the road. Either way, he still has an OPS over 1.080 and wRC+ over 200 regardless if he plays at Yankee Stadium or anywhere else.
Ohtani is hitting at an MVP level and pitching at an Cy Young level. Judge is hitting at a Barry Bonds level. This is going to be one of the closest MVP races in a long time.
drasco036
As long as Ohtani can continue to pitch and hit well, he will always be the most valuable player, however Judge is the clear front runner here. Regardless of if Ohtani ends the year with a higher WAR, his team being non-competitive will hurt him.
Also, not to take anything away from Judge but Judge’s season isn’t in the same realm as Bonds.
mlb1225
Fair enough, but this is the closest to Bonds we have had. In terms of wRC+, what Bonds did in his last three seasons is right around where Judge is now.

Agree. But people have such differing viewpoints on what the MVP award represents. For example, some take it as a sort of ‘ best player’award – so, the player with thr best counting stats wins. But many others look at the word ” valuable” and discount any candidate who is mot on a contending team. That would rove Ohtani from consideration. Proponents of this say the Angels could be a losing team with or without him. But the Yankees being so good would make Judge the easy winner. Personally, I would give jt to Ohtani because his value is higher than Judge because he contributes on both sides of the ball. But both are doing great so it should be VERY close, yes.

Don’t forget the role narrative plays. There are purists who believe 61 is still the HR record, at least for honest players. Judge breaking that could sway some of them. And as was pointed out in the chat, Judge has been good with the glove and on the basepaths. I wouldn’t argue too much about either choice.
Mercenary.Freddie.Freeman
If judge cannot win the cy young Ohtani shouldn’t win the MVP. MVP should go to the best hitter which is Judge. Yeah I’m old get off my lawn!

Steve has been bitter lately in his chats. He doesn’t need to address every little critique. Half of this chat was him responding to trading top prospects and judge vs Ohtani
2012orioles
Poorly/rudley worded on my end here. Sorry Steve. I just don’t think you need to worry about what people say on the internet. Of course you aren’t speaking in absolutes. I’d enjoy the chats more if the response to critics did not happen. No big deal though

It’s hard to word what I think you’re trying to say in a way that’s not offensive. But kudos for trying, clearly you have best interests of everyone at heart, especially Steve – who I think does an amazing job.

Nice alt account Steve. You’re pathetic for looking into the comment section under a fake account.
Jean Matrac
I personally had no problem with his addressing the MVP, and especially the issue of trading of prospects. I think it’s a widespread misconception that fans have about prospects, and their expectations of stardom.
It’s good to be reminded it’s a figurative crapshoot, that a lot of the top 100 prospects won’t even be league average, and conversely some guys that become all-stars weren’t highly regarded.
And I liked that he addressed that absurd comment that the Yankees should have traded Judge.
ThisIsTheYear
He’s always bitter- he’s a childish, unprofessional, arrogant dolt.

It’ll be interesting to see how the free agent market treats Bell. Imo, I’ve always seen him as a player who can be described as consistently inconsistent. He has a ton of peaks-and-valleys throughout his career.
Jean Matrac
I agree, but I do take some exception regarding his struggles in SD. A lot of players have trouble adjusting to a new team, post trade. I think it would be a mistake to read too much into his time with the Pads. But, he always has been a sort of streaky, bat first guy, so not sure how big a deal he can expect.
Angels & NL West
I like MadBum, but having watched him the past three years, he doesn’t have much left in the tank. He’s good for 4-5 innings at 95-105 pitches with a lot of traffic on the bases.
For those thinking he could be a nice trade deadline addition and playoff SP, he’s not that guy anymore. Nor do I believe a couple of ticks on his FB would make him a good backend relief option. His stuff isn’t that good and I don’t think he would gracefully accept a move to the pen.

Surprised to hear he was a Twins fan. I always thought Steve Adams was a Cardinals fan.

I think Michael Wacha’s season opens the door for a qualifying offer discussion. If Steve thinks he won’t accept a one-year contract because he’s played himself info a multi-year deal, then why not offer it if you’re Chaim Bloom and the Red Sox. The payroll space is there. If he accepts you have a bona fide starter at a slightly inflated rate. Aren’t most one year deals usually inflated somewhat? If I’m the Red Sox front office I’m issuing qualifying offers to Wacha, Bogaerts, and Eovaldi. I would’ve done J.D. Martinez as well until his recent slump and power outage for the year. I feel Scott Boras would’ve advised him to decline it and shoot for a 2-year deal, but now the risk is too strong he accepts. Bogaerts and Eovaldi definitely decline. Wacha may accept a nice one-year deal unless his agents think he can score 3 years on the open market.
Jean Matrac
I agree. And the other thing about offering the QO is that makes him less attractive as a FA being attached to a lost draft pick (if the rule isn’t changed that is), increasing the odds for a re-signing.
ThisIsTheYear
Another snooze of a chat Steve. You’re awful.

Don’t tune in?

To the “judge only wins it because he’s a Yankee” idiots, the Yankees have had 3 MVPS since 1975.
Angels have had 4 MVPS this decade
