The Dodgers have been without reliever Blake Treinen for much of the season, as shoulder issues have kept him on the injured list. The right-hander was out of action between mid-April and early September, and his return to the active roster this month lasted just two appearances. Treinen went back on the IL with shoulder tightness on a placement retroactive to September 7. While he’ll be eligible to return from that stint tomorrow, manager Dave Roberts informed reporters Treinen’s shoulder hasn’t responded to a Monday bullpen session as hoped (via David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports and J.P. Hoornstra of the Southern California News Group).
Roberts indicated there’s some concern Treinen may not be available in time for the postseason, which kicks off just over two weeks from now. Los Angeles is assuredly going to get a bye past the first-round Wild Card series, which will afford Treinen a bit more time to try to work his way back. If they could get the 34-year-old back in the fold, it’d go a long way towards improving their playoff bullpen. While he’s been limited to just five appearances this year, Treinen was one of the sport’s best late-game weapons a season ago. He worked to a 1.99 ERA with a 29.7% strikeout rate while inducing grounders on over half the batted balls he allowed through 72 1/3 frames in 2021.
Some other injury notes from around the game:
- The Diamondbacks placed rookie starter Ryne Nelson on the 15-day injured list this afternoon, recalling southpaw Tyler Holton from Triple-A Reno in his place. The right-hander is dealing with scapula inflammation that’ll end his season a few weeks early. Manager Torey Lovullo didn’t sound especially concerned about the issue long-term, telling reporters (including Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic) the club was proceeding with an excess of caution with the season winding down. Lovullo indicated Nelson should be in the mix for a spot in next year’s season-opening rotation, hardly a surprise given his prospect pedigree. Baseball America’s #96 overall farmhand entering the 2022 campaign, Nelson struggled with the longball in a hitter-friendly Triple-A environment but impressed in his first three big league starts. He allowed only four runs (three earned) with 16 strikeouts and six walks in 18 1/3 innings to kick off his MLB career.
- The Yankees reinstated Luis Severino from the 60-day injured list this afternoon, as expected. New York already had a vacancy on the 40-man roster, and they optioned Miguel Andújar to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to open a spot on the active roster. Severino, who missed two months after suffering a lat strain in mid-June, returned with five innings of one-run ball in a win over the Pirates. The righty tossed 64 pitches and figures to progressively build his pitch count with each start in preparation for a potential role in the playoff rotation. New York is also likely to soon welcome back reliever Zack Britton, who hasn’t thrown an MLB pitch since undergoing a UCL repair last September. Joel Sherman of the New York Post was among those to relay that Britton has reported to the major league club after making eight appearances on a rehab stint. While he’s not yet been formally reinstated from the 60-day injured list, that seems likely to occur in the coming days.
.
Treinen and The Cat Man would sure be nice in the post-season. Maybe we can do it without them, but man that would be a huge boost going into October..

Yanks in a tough spot. Great to see Seve and Britton back, but (especially in Britton’s case), you’ll need to send someone down that carried the water during the injuries. Good problem to have if anyone else gets hurt.

Greg will probably go first.
Holmes is also on a precariously short leash.

When I know I’m wrong, I’ll admit it, and I was wrong about the trade for Bader. When they acquired him in a walking boot I didn’t expect him to be back this soon and running as well, but he looks great in center field and on the basepaths. Replacing Hicks was worth the cost of Montgomery, especially with Severino back and looking strong.
The trade for Montas still looks like a total screw-up, but that’s another story.
kiwimlbfan
Well said buddy. I didn’t follow the Cards so had no opinion at the time but it looks (admittedly after 2 games) that Bader might prove some people wrong about the trade. I’m more worried about the relieving corps right now though, seems like the Yankees need a 4 run lead before handing the ball over…
Yankee Clipper
I always liked Bader and think the trade was worth it for the future of the OF. Not so sure its worth it yet, until the postseason plays out. If he continues doing this and their pitching doesn’t necessitate someone like Monty, yeah, it was an excellent trade.
So far he’s been everything we could’ve hoped for…I just love the energy he plays with. He’s reminds me of Gardner in his prime in many respects, only better.
CaptainJudge99
Yeah guess I was wrong about Bader to. Lol. I really do miss Monty. The jury is still out on Montas though. He hasn’t looked good so far. I don’t think he’s a scrub, basically he’s no Sonny Gray. He needs to learn a circle change in the off-season to be better in my opinion, he’s got a great arm. We’ll see.

As long as they stay healthy, I think a rotation of Cole, Sevy, Cortes, Taillon and either of German (another guy I was wrong about — he’s been very good lately) or Schmidt is good enough to make Monty expendable. But, unless he comes off the IL and shows some unmistakable dominance before the postseason, I don’t want Montas in the playoffs rotation. It’s bad enough having to worry about Cole in the playoffs.

You expect a 5 man rotation in the playoffs?
Poster formerly known as . . .
I expect a 5-man rotation at least until the playoffs.
BTW, the Nats used five different pitchers to start games in the 2019 World Series, the Rays and Astros each used five in the 2020 ALCS, the Dodgers used five in the 2021 NLCS, and the Braves used five in the 2021 World Series.

Typical Yankee fans. Bader plays 3 games and he’s the second coming of Willie Mays. Cash Man’s a genius again. But when Bader turns into Hicks version 2.0, he’s a bonehead again. Whatever, just keep making up your minds. Let the dang thing play out for gosh sakes.

Right. Willie Mays. Don’t hyperbolize or anything.
Barring a return of his injury, Bader is already demonstrably a better baserunner than Hicks. Baserunning is as much about smarts as speed, but Bader’s sprint speed this year according to Statcast is 29.2 feet per second compared to Hicks’s 27.8, and his UBR (Fangraphs’ Ultimate Base Running) is 2.6 compared to Hicks’s 1.0. Bader has 15 stolen bases in 272 plate appearances compared to Hicks’s 10 in 420 plate appearances.
My concern with Bader was that he might be slowed down by his plantar fasciitis, but if it doesn’t affect him any more than it has so far, that shouldn’t be a concern. Sure, he might fall apart, but so far the pressure of New York hasn’t appeared to affect him.
As for Cashman, this is one deal of several, and the “big” one — the trade for Montas — looks terrible.

Even with Montas, let it play out. I know it’s all about what have you done for me lately, but there’s more baseball ahead for the Yankees and it isn’t over until it’s over. Jumping up and down, good or bad, over small sample sizes is premature. I mean, it’s good training for jumping up and down, but it’s exhausting.

Cannot win all trades. Just ask Dayton Moore!

Montas was injured before Cashman acquired him and he’s injured again. He owns a 6.35 ERA, a 62 ERA+, a 1.54 WHIP and a 1-3 record in 8 starts with the Yankees. He’s given up 4 or more earned runs in 5 of his 8 starts. We’ve seen enough of him to recognize a bad acquisition.
UWPSUPERFAN77
Agree Montas to the inactive for the play offs!
CaptainJudge99
Yeah your definitely right about Montas. I don’t think he will be getting a playoff start. He’ll probably be in the bullpen. German has definitely impressed us. I was wrong there to. I wanted Schmidt to be in the rotation. Good stuff.

Actually kind of glad that the DBacks are shutting down Ryne Nelson with no further need for a 6-man rotation.
38 IP more than his prior season high, so let him get a full recovery and he should be good to push for 180 IP next season by conventional progression standards.
There actually might be an exciting rotation (sans Bumgarner) come next season and the defense might push into elite territory with the overabundance of CFs and the way the IF (minus Rojas, sadly) has been on the ball. Oh, and I’ve been told that a healthy Ahmed is a pretty good defender, but let’s see how his bat looks with a full ST.
Can’t wait until framing is no longer a concern; Herrera has the better glove at BUC, but Hummel has the better bat/wheels.
I doubt it truly helps with FA negotiations, but I’m pretty sure that there are a lot of pitchers that would love to have that team playing behind them.
There are actually reasons to be excited about the Diamondbacks! Can’t wait for next season!

Game 149 and those bluejays fans over at SPORTSNET are hammering the panic button!
If you’re the Yankees who do you want to face in a world series? I wouldn’t mind seeing them beat the Braves i guess.
Hard not to root for Dusty Baker too though. Mmmmmm hot dogs
kodion
It’s not panic. Most of them are just in shock from losing one to the Phillies!
tigerfan1968
Jays have not won in 30 years. They have a shot this year. Astros will be tough of course . I would not want to face the Mariners in the playoffs. That rotation is tough.
First round will be Rays at Jays and Mariners at Cleveland.
LordD99
Tampa and Cleveland advance.

F- The Dodgers.

Harsh and unfair. Explain yourself. PLEASE!
UWPSUPERFAN77
I hope A good player like Andujar gets more respect when he leaves the Yanks. I cannot remember anyone more bounced around, unfairly, since bouncing Balboni. Bouncing did well with the Royals. Saw the Yanks in Milwaukee. Do not look like a WS team!
stymeedone
“A good player like Andujar.” Interesting take. Evidently you have little faith in how the Yankees use their resources. He’s not a good infielder, and is trying to learn the OF, which is a work in progress. He’s also shown little with the bat since his rookie year. I see him as a bench player going forward. Every team has a player that bounces up and down. That he has not been able to get regular ABs for any stretch of time, even with all the injuries should tell you all you need to know.
