The Marlins activated outfielder Avisaíl García from the injured list today, per Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald, after missing over a month due to a hamstring strain. Fellow outfielder Peyton Burdick was optioned in a corresponding move.
It’s been a disappointing season for García, the first of a four-year, $53MM deal he signed with with the Marlins. The Fish were surely hoping García could add some thump to their lineup after he hit 29 homers with the Brewers last year and slashed .262/.330/.490 for a wRC+ of 115. But he’s hit just seven long balls in 88 games this year, producing an overall line of .232/.269/.322, wRC+ of 68.
The Marlins are 17 1/2 games out of a playoff spot now and won’t be playing for much down the stretch. But García will look to get back into a groove and finish the season strong, going into the winter with some momentum and optimism for 2023.
Some other injury notes from around the league…
- The Athletics announced a series of roster moves today, one of which was placing righty Adam Oller on the 15-day injured list. Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle relays that Oller’s IL placement is due to “right rib costochondritis.” The club hasn’t provided a timeline for the hurler, but he’ll miss at least the next couple of weeks. Since there’s only about four weeks remaining on the schedule, it’s possible that he’s done for the year. Acquired from the Mets in the Chris Bassitt trade, Oller made his MLB debut this year, tossing 73 1/3 innings with a 6.01 ERA, 13.4% strikeout rate, 11.2% walk rate and 31.7% ground ball rate.
- The Rockies placed infielder José Iglesias on the 10-day injured list today due to a right hand contusion. Iglesias signed a one-year, $5MM deal with the Rockies in the offseason and became the first shortstop atop Colorado’s depth chart not named “Tulowitzki” or “Story” since 2006. He’s having another season typical of his career, providing solid defense while hitting a bit below league average. His batting line for the year is .300/.337/.392, producing a wRC+ of 92. Though that’s 8% below league average, his defensive contributions have allowed him to rack up 1.4 fWAR on the year. This offseason will feature another batch of superstar shortstops, including Dansby Swanson, Trea Turner, Carlos Correa and Xander Bogaerts, assuming those latter two opt out of their respective contracts. Iglesias isn’t quite at their level but will be in the next tier down, next to players like Elvis Andrus. With Iglesias out of the lineup the past three days, Alan Trejo has been slotted into the shortstop position.

Should have mentioned the corresponding move for Iglesias, which was activating Yonathan Daza from the IL. Probably means Garrett Hampson plays more SS and less CF.

How on earth does a guy with a 6 era and awful k/bb rate get over 70 innings in the majors? A’s don’t care I guess??
julyn82001
He is just a first year amateur trying to showcase himself. 2 of last 3 outing Oller showed promising. Time will tell with him.
BeforeMcCourt
looks like he bombed 3 of his first 4 appearances, but since then, his ERA has been about 4.45 over the next ~13 starts.
So yea, A’s, had no one better when he was really really bad and then he became just bad
case
Yea, but it’s a throwaway year and if things work out the A’s have a lot of club control for future years. Far better than the offensive situation with a lineup half full of underperforming veterans with no club control or upside.
Rsox
Because someone had to throw those innings. Kaprielian started the year on the IL, then Daulton Jeffries went down with Thoracic Outlet, Frankie Montas was traded, and Paul Blackburn got hurt. Those may not have been the best 73.1 innings the A’s could ask for, but at least they got that much.
I like J.P. Sears. Sears with Blackburn/Kaprielian/Irvin give the A’s a decent front four to start next season with (assuming that any of them aren’t traded over the winter)

Avi Garcia has a lot to prove from this point on.
BeforeMcCourt
that is the type of contract that hamstrings mid to small market teams and a couple of them have the potential to sidetrack a rebuild real quick
Not the top option on the market at his position, with an inconsistent track record, and paid substantial money to be ‘the signing’ to show a team wants to compete
Rsox
Imagine if Jeter got his wish and signed Castellanos too?
Garcia’s contract isn’t unmoveable if he rebounds next season if the Marlins decide they want to try to trade him. If he continues to decline then it becomes more problematic.
For a team loaded with corner OF depth and DH candidates with Jesus Aguilar (at the time) and Garrett Cooper, signing Garcia for that long of a deal didn’t really make sense beyond signing a free agent to a multi-year contract just for the sake of doing so
BeforeMcCourt
It’s amazing how many teams make the same mistake. Over and over. Without blinking I can think of the Reds, Rockies and Miami who have recently fallen into the trap. The “announce our presence” signing… with a flawed player who isn’t a superstar

Very correct in both statements. The only thing missing was calling out that they could’ve used the money that was used for either Garcia or Soler to instead sign Jansen or trade for Kimbrel. Considering how many games the bullpen snatched defeat out of the hands of victory, a legit Closer would’ve made this situation look less dire. This bullpen we’ve had the last 2 years may be the worse collection in blowing leads than the Marlins have ever had. And that’s saying a lot considering we had a couple of seasons of Kevin Gregg and Renyel “Ford” Pinto taking turns at blowing games; and another year of Heath Bell melting and blowing everything in sight.

@Rsox
Yes, all the items you mentioned made the signing questionable, and it made signing two corner OFs (with one that is really a DH) when they signed Soler too absolutely stupid.
Then when you add the other major problem – a lack of a legit Closer and our ability to hold leads – us spending money on both Garcia and Soler brought forth the thoughts of “What are they doing?” We could’ve used that money to sign Jansen or to trade for Kimbrel. Then to see Jeter quit because he couldn’t have Castellanos just is ridiculous and makes him look like an idiot. Now if Jeter quit because they didn’t want to sign Jansen or trade for Kimbrel after signing Avi Garcia, then he would have had credibility in the eyes of people that aren’t his fanboys.
We’ll see what happens this offseason. If Kim Ng falls short, calls for her firing will start next season. There will be no excuse accepted for not acquiring a Closer and a legit bat to round out the mistakes. She won’t be able to hide behind Derek Jeter and Gary Denbo.

“Iglesias signed a one-year, $5MM deal with the Rockies in the offseason and became the first shortstop atop Colorado’s depth chart not named “Tulowitzki” or “Story” since 2006.”
Not true. Tulowitzki was traded midseason 2015 and Story didn’t debut until OD 2016. Jose Reyes was the Rockies top SS the latter half of 2015.

Tulo was injured so much was he really on the depth chart…someone other than him had to be playing as #1
zacharydmanprin
Oller nothing, I suppose.
BeansforJesus
I can’t believe Garcia has a $5 million buyout on his $12 million option in 2026.
His agent deserves a raise just for that fleecing.
Datashark
Oller came down with “I suck” disease…likely out rest of season. Hopefully he can re-work something and overcome it.

I dunno, maybe tell us what the other moves were instead of just mentioning that they exist? Too much?

“Iglesias isn’t quite at their level.”
That’s a pretty massive understatement.
Stormintazz
Garcia played for a contract last season with Brewers. He will play for another one in a few years.
