Catching up on some injured-list transactions around baseball…
- The Pirates placed right-hander JT Brubaker on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to September 16. Right-hander Luis Ortiz was called up to take Brubaker’s spot on the active roster. Brubaker was officially listed as sidelined due to right arm inflammation, though lat soreness was given as the reason for his early exit from Thursday’s game, when he lasted just three innings. Over 141 1/3 innings and 27 starts for the Bucs this season, Brubaker has a 4.58 ERA and some unimpressive Statcast numbers, though his SIERA is a more favorable 3.95. His ability to eat innings could put him in the conversation for a spot in Pittsburgh’s rotation next season, even if he doesn’t make it back for one more start in 2022.
- The Diamondbacks placed right-hander Keynan Middleton on the 15-day IL due to a sprained left big toe. Righty Luis Frias was called up from Triple-A in the corresponding move. The toe sprain will likely end what has been an injury-plagued season for Middleton, who missed a couple of months due to elbow inflammation and a right ankle sprain. Between the injuries and time in the minor leagues, Middleton was limited to 17 innings in 18 appearances with the D’Backs, and he posted a 5.29 ERA over that rather small sample size. Now in his sixth MLB season, Middleton has yet to regain the early promise of his first two seasons with the Angels, before Tommy John surgery sidelined him in 2018. He inked a minors deal with the D’Backs last winter and probably seems likely to be back on the open market this offseason in search of another non-guaranteed deal.

How about instead sending Suwinsky back to AAA to give someone else a shot. He’s 0 for his last 25 with 17 strikeouts.
Haines and Shelton should be proud that they’re team tied for the most strikeouts in a 9 inning game and set the team record also for the most strikeouts in franchise history
BeansforJesus
Suwin (ski) and a miss?
He needs to be sent down yesterday.
toddomatic
Agreed. This is really going to hurt their playoff chances. Better call Hoy Park back up as soon as possible.

I’m here to say, Thank goodness the Mets no longer have to play the Pirates the rest of the season.
BeansforJesus
At one point there were baseball players, no better at the sport than you or I. And they moved their pale, weak, pasty arms to throw baseballs barely 70mph professionally. And they are all dead.
Next time you dare speak ill of a pirates starting pitcher, remember this comment. Then try to remember why this comment applies to your train of thought. Then think you got it and say “oh yeah, now I got it”. Then you forget and realized everyone is just staring at you waiting for a comment they have already decided is probably stupid. Now, you leave the bar alone and a little scared. All because you had to talk about pirates starting pitchers.
tiredolddude
I have no idea what you’re talking about and am much the worse for having read what amounts to mindless drivel. Two minutes I will never have back
The Man 3 rails about the outrageously poor hitting coaches within the Pirates org. I think whoever is coaching pitchers is even worse.
Yesterday, we had Wilson working around Vogelbach, only to throw a dead red fastball that gets crushed for a 3-run bomb
Today, we watch a reliever miss with a fastball up in the zone that gets punched out to left for the go ahead run
I’ll ask again: is there any learning at all going on here?
Tomorrow, it’ll be more of the same
BeansforJesus
Two minutes? It took two minutes to read that?
Now I know youre from Pittsburgh.
The only learning going on is above the field. Learning who to cut loose. I doubt anyone is expecting improvement from most of the roster outside of those under 25
tiredolddude
Sorry I misjudged you. Truly. I took your original post as some critique of those who judge pitchers —and I’m at the top of that list.
Apologies
BeansforJesus
Apology accepted. My original post was complete nonsense. But, I think pirates pitching is beyond laughable. The Paul Maholm and Zach Duke days were better than what they are rolling out now.
However, that’s a good sign. They aren’t trying to sell fans on this rotation is the future. They are just pitching until they hit the bottom then building up. Which is better than rebuilding then signing retreads and hoping that the “searage magic” works.
kmk1986
Todd Ritchie Kris benson anyone??
TheMan 3
Though I haven’t had an alcoholic beverage in 30 years, if I happened to find myself in a bar, the last topic I’d be talking about is the Pirates pitching staff.
Instead I’d be talking about how the coaching staff have failed to teach pitching fundamentals to the pitchers.
Searage and Moran have been critical failures. The last good pitching coach they had was Ray Miller, also 30 years ago
tiredolddude
As I said on another thread, Keller shows all the signs of a pitcher who’ll have great success once he goes to another team, following in the footsteps of Cole, Morton, Taillon and Glasnow
TheMan 3
Same can be said about position players reaching their potential after leaving the Bucs.
And i’m talking historically, not just currently
Jason Schmidt
Jon Lieber
Jay Bell
Jose Batista
Austin Meadows
Just to name a few
I have faced the reality that I’ll never see another World Series championship in what remains of my life
Not as long as Bob Nutting owns this team and repeatedly puts his personal profit over putting a competitive team on the field
The proverbial buck stops with him
Buuba ho tep
Yawn
TheMan 3
Yawn?
Ever since Mclatchy bought the team in I believe 2003, ownership whether he or later Nutting both have refused to increase payroll.
Mclatchy’s group paid $98 million for the franchise that is now worth $1.3 billion.
The highest payroll ever in team history was in 2015, $114 million, beginning in 2016, ownership instructed management to dump salaries.
Now go back to sleep
tiredolddude
I’ll grant Buuba that I’m —or we’re—beating a dead horse here. In the end, his thought about being patient is all we have although, he apparently sees the glass as half full
I don’t see these guys contending anytime soon and agree that any thoughts of advancing in the playoffs, let alone a WS appearance or win, are the stuff of Fantasy Island
A very difficult team to watch game in and game out, and harder given the fact that there seems to be very little learning or progress going on in any facet
And with that, Buuba, I’ll let it all play out. Depressing time to be a fan of any Pittsburgh sports team. Maybe it’s time to take up fishing
TheMan 3
We’re accustomed to enjoying playoffs thanks to the Penguins and Steelers so for me at least, watching the Pirates digress every year that’s part of their “ rebuilding “ makes it even more depressing when the other major franchises fail to get beyond the first round of their respective playoffs
The Pens gave Mike Sullivan a 5 year extension while the Steelers never blink an eye in giving Mike Tomlin a deal.
Neither in my opinion are worthy of extensions while Shelton is arguably the worst manager in baseball
At 67. I’m beginning to devote my attention now to the Pitt Panthers
tiredolddude
I honestly can’t remember a more sickening inning in recent Pirates history than the 9th inning of last night’s game. Maybe the loss to Atlanta in the playoffs, where Chico Lind let a ground ball go through his legs and later, one-legged Sid Bream beat a throw to the plate from Barry Bonds
Maybe
But American Legion managers could have done a better job of locking down a 4 run lead. And Legion players and specifically pitchers would show more guts than Underwood and Crowe
Sickening
But hey, have patience
I’ll be finding better things to do than watch this garbage
TheMan 3
Shelton’s decision to release Peters in favor of Stout has to be one of the worst of his failed leadership and allowing Crowe to continue pitching after already giving up a home run then loading the bases with no one out runs a close second
It’s almost as if he wants to lose so they can draft a higher pick next year
After all, rebuilding is perpetual with this franchise
tiredolddude
Used to be a time that I thought Shelton was simply giving kids opportunities to show what they could do in various situations, sprinkled with mind numbing decisions to play cast offs when you’d least expect
But as this season has dragged on, I share your views. Between him, the lack of instruction and learning and sheer gutlessness or lack of care from the minor leaguers coming to this level, well, don’t tell me this will be a contending team in the next 2-3 years
Beer league softball players have more pride than the zombies in Pirates uniforms. Absolutely no fire from each.
What was once a difficult team to watch every day has becoming a sickening team to watch
TheMan 3
Maybe the Steelers can beat the Browns tonight and at least provide a glimmer of hope that one Pittsburgh franchise will win a game
