Far more has gone wrong than right for the 2022 Giants, but the team’s offseason signing of outfielder Joc Pederson to a one-year, $6MM contract has proven to be a shrewd investment. Pederson has hit well in his first season as a Giant, and he’s apparently made a good impression on the organization in all facets, as president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi said in an appearance on KNBR’s Tolbert & Copes show yesterday that he’s had discussions with Pederson and his agent about re-signing him (link to full 23-minute interview).
“We’d love to have him back next year,” Zaidi said when asked what the future held for Pederson. “We’ve talked some to his representative. I’ve talked to Joc about it himself. He’s from here. He’s played well. He was an All-Star for us.”
Pederson, 30, has indeed enjoyed a strong year in San Francisco. The Palo Alto native has appeared in 107 games, tallied 348 plate appearances and slashed .263/.339/.519 with 20 home runs, 17 doubles and three stolen bases (in five attempts). He’s walked at an 8.6% clip, and this year’s 21.6% strikeout rate is his lowest mark since 2019 (and tied for the third-lowest of his career). The Giants have shielded him from lefties almost entirely — he has just 46 plate appearances against same-handed opponents — but that’s nothing new for Pederson, who carries just a .210/.285/.334 batting line against southpaws (compared to .240/.342/.494 against righties).
It’s been the best offensive showing for Pederson since his career-high 36 home runs back in 2019, but defensive metrics on the slugger are down across the board. Each of Defensive Runs Saved (-7), Ultimate Zone Rating (-6.6) and Outs Above Average (-6) are critical of Pederson’s glovework. He’s also spent 10 games at designated hitter for the Giants, though, and Pederson’s pop against right-handed pitching is plenty sufficient to fill that role if the Giants are concerned about his defensive work moving forward.
If Pederson does reach the market, he’ll be one of the more appealing options on a fairly thin market for corner outfield bats. Aaron Judge, of course, is the top free agent on the market, and Andrew Benintendi will be in a nice position heading into his age-28 season on the heels of a strong all-around showing. Beyond that pairing, Pederson will slot into the next tier alongside names like Mitch Haniger, Joey Gallo and Jurickson Profar (who seems likely to opt out of the final year of his Padres contract).
As with any potential free agent, Pederson’s return (or his departure) is largely dependent on the context of the roster around him. In-house outfield options for the Giants next year include Austin Slater, LaMonte Wade Jr., Luis Gonzalez and Mike Yastrzemski — to say nothing of prospects Heliot Ramos, Luis Matos and Vaun Brown. Ramos and Matos, however, have had down seasons in the minors, just as Yastrzemski has in the big leagues. Struggles notwithstanding, however, Zaidi implied that the team plans to tender a contract to Yastrzemski in arbitration this winter and retain him for the 2023 campaign.
“It’s just been a down season for him,” Zaidi said of Yastrzemski. “He’s been frustrated. Last year, the batting average wasn’t there but he still hit 25 homers, so you still had offensive production in a certain way. He’s still a guy who brings a ton of intangibles to the table. He’s a great defensive player. We view him as part of this team going forward, and I know he’s going to be as motivated as anybody to come back strong next year.”
Yastrzemski, who just turned 32 a couple weeks ago, will be due a raise on this year’s $3.7MM salary but has stumbled to a .203/.303/.361 batting line in 439 plate appearances. He’s still drawing walks at a strong 11.6% clip, however, and Yastrzemski’s strikeout rate, exit velocity, hard-hit rate and broader batted-ball profile are all quite similar to his prior, more productive seasons.
The Giants can control Yastrzemski for three more years beyond the current campaign, so there’s good reason to place a reasonably low-cost bet on a rebound if the team doesn’t believe his skill set has begun to decline. That said, both Yastrzemski and Pederson are left-handed hitting outfielders who could require platoon partners — Yastrzesmki has struggled severely against lefties in each of the past two seasons — so the extent to which the Giants again want to lean on a platoon, matchup-based outfield set will drive the decisions on both players. For the time being, it sounds as though the Giants are open to again leaning heavily on both lefties in the outfield again next season.

Just don’t let him play fantasy football.

Wow, that one joker who trolls all Giant news hasn’t woke up yet. You know the guy from SD who’s name I will not mention….
Seriously, it would be nice to have Joc back at a reasonable price. I’m hoping for Josh Bell to replace Belt and Nolan Arenado to replace Longoria. Hey, it could happen!
tc55
Sadly to say Longo will be back if he does not retire. He will. be a cheap option of 8m after you subtract the 5m buyout from the 13m club option. I also think they will also bring back Belt if the operation is successful because he will not demand a high salary.. I certainly hope SF will not do any of the above because they need to get younger but for SF it will be cheaper and short term contracts is a big deal to Farhan.. Very frustrating!

Rumour has it Tommy Pham is Jocs new agent. Just saying

Jays should be inquiring this winter about Yaz.
jmchale40
Jays should not be.
They have two corner outfielders already significantly better. They could use a center fielder though. Doesn’t need to be a full-time player. Just someone to play when springer is at DH.
KK from the rays…and if they want to take a flier, Bellinger. Even gallo.
Same can be said for the Phillies

One of the few things that worked out for the Giants this season.
UWPSUPERFAN77
Good player, who has earned his money. Could be up to a star again if you let him play every day. The Dodgers labeled him a platoon player after he hit 40 home runs. They ruined him. Start him 150 games and he would return to star status.
.
Absolutely. They got it engrained in his mind that he was merely a “platoon” guy and it stuck. He needs to be in the lineup everyday. Tell a guy that he “can’t hit lefties” enough times and they’ll start believing it.
MuleorAstroMule
He is a platoon guy. SF doesn’t start him against lefties and for good reason. He has a career 70 wRC+ against them. That’s Nicky Lopez territory.
Also, SF platoons and rotates players heavily. It’s probably a toss up between them and TB for who does it more. We’re into September and they only have three hitters with more than 400 PAs. So I doubt there is an organizational philosophy to just let guys grind it out.
tedtheodorelogan
When I looked at their lineup the other day they had more guys with ops’s under .700 than over .700. Perhaps a new organizational philosophy is in order, one that involves paying talented players to play every day as opposed to trying to cobble together a roster of platoon players from the scrap heap.
MuleorAstroMule
Yeah you’re right. The Giants would have much more success if they played more to their hitter’s weaknesses. Putting people in a position to fail is just good management.
Or as you suggest, they could just sign better ball players. I don’t know why every team doesn’t to this though. Honestly, it’s just sound, practical, easy-to-follow advice.
tedtheodorelogan
When Tommy LaStella is your DH and Joc Pederson and Wilmer Flores are your best hitters you have a poorly constructed lineup. Those guys are roll players on a good team and LaStella gets DFA’d because he can’t hit or play defense.
Baseball77
I wonder if LaStella is still hurt.. Why else is he at the DH spot all the time? But considering his (lack of) hitting, I am puzzled why he isn’t just put on the IL. It would take a fair amount of lack of effort for his replacement to do worse.
iverbure
Remember when the giants won a 107 games last year with the same philosophy and now all of a sudden it doesn’t work? You people have the dumbest takes.
giantsphan12
@iver, you make a solid point, but last year’s incredible run is proving to be somewhat of a fluke. Everything had to go right for the Giants to win like they did last year including have a generational player playing excellent ball in Buster Posey. Everyone else was playing at the top of their potential, including the aging veterans. To think, as Farhan apparently did, that you can sustain that luck and run those same guys out there expecting them to over-perform was simply unrealistic. There is no such thing as regression-proof players. When Buster leaves, and all your guys regress, you get this present product. We need new lifeblood….let’s hope this offseason brings us some hope!!!
mattwild1
that’s what i’m saying. i get the idea of “playing to your strengths” but there comes a point where he’s gonna have to hit against a lefty in a crucial situation. “practice makes perfect” yet this organization is fully against most guys being more than one dimensional
mlb1225
Pederson is a career .210/.285/.334 batter when he has to face LHP. Not every player in baseball is going to be able to hit both LHP and RHP well. It’s not like we’re talking about a 23 year old rookie here. We’re talking about a 30-year-old, eight season veteran. I get that guys can make adjustments throughout their careers, but if after eight seasons he hasn’t improved at all when he has to face LHP, then how many more opportunities are you going to give him?
.
Doesn’t seem there is gonna be any way around him sitting games against lefties. Anyone else have drastically asymmetric lefty/righty splits like him??
metslvt17
The Mets traded for 2 players just to split DH duties depending on the pitcher’s handedness. So….yeah. Those type of players exist.
Pedro 4 Delino
Wrong. Joc showed a strong disadvantage against LHP from the start. The year he hit 36 HR’s was his 2nd to last in LA anyway so that couldn’t have been before he was relegated to platoon duties. The Giants would play Joc more against lefties, if he could hit them. Joc has over 500 PA against lefties with a 210/285/334 triple slash. If he wants more opportunities, he needs to perform better
amk1920
Wrong. The Giants play him even less against LHP.
mlb1225
Pederson has less than 50 plate appearances vs LHP this season. They’re not letting him see very many opportunities against southpaws.
.
Indeed…Let him loose.
.
Was about to get on baseball reference and check it out myself. Thanks for saving me the time.

“The Giants have shielded him from lefties almost entirely — he has just 46 plate appearances against same-handed opponents….”
Just sayin’. 🙂
Mystery Team
He’s horrible against left handed pitching hence the not playing against lefties. You can’t force a square peg into a round hole. Joc was also one of the most undeserving all star starters in the history of the all star game I laugh when I see Giant’s fans praising him and talking about him playing full time.
Jean Matrac
“Joc was also one of the most undeserving all star starters in the history of the all star game…”
Given that every team, every year, needs at least one representative to the ASG, this has to be one of the biggest exaggerations in the history of MLBTR comments.
Benjamin101677
Joc was a all star because of his post season exposure and cult following with pearls
MuleorAstroMule
I figure that distinction goes to Mark Redman who went into the 2006 All-Star break with a 5.27 ERA (finished at 5.71) and was selected to represent KC.

UWPSUPERFAN77
Is Yaz being given kid glove treatment because he has YAZ as his Grandfather? Looking forward to giants’ fans responding to this!
davemlaw
No, they’ve been batting him at the bottom of the lineup and not treating him like he received MVP votes like in 2020. Farhan is just doing his spin: if they can get something for Yaz in a trade I think he’s gone this offseason. He’s a borderline non-tender candidate, numbers don’t lie.
Chipsss
He’s still going to end up with about 2 WAR if he can have a decent end to his season and likely only be about 5 million next year. He’s had stronger showings in the past. He’s also a good teammate and a positive dude who still puts his effort into the field when his bat is struggling so I have no problem with him being back on the team.
.
He is pretty much the nicest guy. Should see his interactions with his bro. His charity work. He doesnt even retaliate when smacked in the chops. I have no doubt he is a good teammate and leader in the clubhouse. Would have taken him on the Angels years ago.

Pretty sure they’re talking about Yaz not Joc, Trumbo. Nobody here is wrong though; your individual assessments of the 2 are correct.

Dodgers are almost unmatched in developing minor league talent into impact mlb players. What’s more impressive is that they always draft low in the order because of how they’re always winning the division. Regardless, being a dominant mlb team is 100x better than being a mediocre team where the only thing to brag about is a highly volitile farm system.
.
Their big secret is the scouts.
CCCTL
MLB currently rates the Giants system just below the A’s.
Rsox
I’m sure the #2 ranked farm system is really sweating the #18 ranked system.
The Giants are stuck in middling territory as they do not have a deep farm to rebuild nor do they have tradable assets on the MLB roster to trade to upgrade the farm (missed opportunity on Rodon). The one good thing for the Giants is the money coming off the books. Belt/Longoria/Rodon/Pederson/Flores/Alvarez/Leone all come off the books so the Giants once again enter the offseason with quite a bit of money to spend
tedtheodorelogan
And they will just miss out on the top tier free agents this off-season, like always. But Farhan will go on KNBR and say how hard they tried, and how close they were to signing Judge, and the simps will believe him and happily pay 30 bucks for a crab sandwich and the privilege of watching Tommy LaStella DH.

This doesn’t surprise me and if not for a mid-season neck/shoulder issue that sapped is power for a month + his price would be even higher. I honestly think there’s a 50-50 chance he’d get a QO because there are NO bad 1yr contracts, I think he has the ability to secure a 2yr FA contract. and the Giants can afford to do that.
Belt will not be retained, there are AB’s at 1B, DH and possibly to a lesser degree a corner OF but at this juncture he’s there for the BAT. Personally I’d like to see Bonds mentor him, I think there’s another level of power AND as importantly another level of fitness for Joc. Hate him or love him, there is no denying Bonds’ work ethic.
.
Speaking of Barry and Joc, if HE can’t show/teach Joc how to hit lefties then it probably is a lost cause. Regardless of all else, Barry knows hitting. Still not sure what happened with him in Miami.
Dennis Boyd
Can bonds show him how to lose weight, too? Just sayin’
tedtheodorelogan
Bonds has been cycling pretty much nonstop since he retired and is very thin. Almost unrecognizable.
5TUNT1N
Not to mention his go of it at the dog show!
DarkSide830
Matos is hitting .218 in A+. I’d doubt he sees SF next season.
Jean Matrac
That’s a very big assumption. A lot of things could happen to make that thought incorrect. Maybe he’s playing through a nagging injury now suppressing his numbers? What if the coaches identify a problem that he corrects in the offseason. What if he goes to DriveLine, and they revamp his swing a la Justin Turner? A lot of good hitters have had bounced back from down seasons. One season does not define baseball players.
tedtheodorelogan
A couple of decades of not being able to develop outfield talent defines a poorly run farm system.
Jean Matrac
That’s a tired narrative circulated for the sole purpose of have something to gripe about.
Joey Bart was the Giants highest draft pick since Will Clark in 1985. When teams aren’t drafting high they need to prioritize more important positions like pitching, catching, and the IF. Not developing OF talent didn’t prevent them from winning a few WS titles. Would you rather have a homegrown AS outfielder, or a WS title?
stpbaseball 76
he didn’t make a definitive statement or assumption. he said that he doubts he’ll make it to the show next season. he didn’t say that there wasn’t any way he makes it. he didn’t say he had no chance to make it to the show. he said he doubts he will with those numbers. I certainly agree as any objective observer would
Jean Matrac
Yes, and I told him that his doubts were premature, for a variety of reasons.

Being a dodger fan and living in SF- it is really funny to hear what people think of Joc locally on the sports talk radio here and then read this article. The fans are melting down over this team, the only want Webb, Rodon and Bart from the current team.
They had a great season last year but I think the results have the front office, ownership and fan base complicity in the last off-season. Any normal person could see that their roster was performing over their heads by a wide margin. They need to augment with a better core and missed out on some helpful pieces. Their farm isn’t good and their roster is a mess- I have to believe they are bringing a giant checkbook to the party this winter… it’s the only way this team will be relevant in the next 3-5 years.
tedtheodorelogan
Some of us fans live in reality and agree with you. Optimistic fools with their heads in the sand still think Farhan is doing a good job. Other than Webb, Rodon, Bart, and maybe Slater, Flores, and Joc as bench players, nobody on this team really deserves to be back next year. Brebia and Doval are the only bullpen pieces who deserve another year.
foppert
Bravo. Thank heavens you are here. Stay rational.

I thought SF was a good team for Yermin but the team needs to commit to him as their primary DH and as the backup catcher.
Pederson and Yermin would look nice in the Giants ’23 lineup but if the Giants aren’t going to commit to keeping Yermin in the bigs they should trade or release him.
Yermin would look good on the Marlins as their primary DH, and the Marlins would do well in signing Rodon to a long term deal too,
Rodon and Alcantara would be strong, and the Marlins could fill out their offense by trading some of their young controllable SPs.
If I’m the Marlins I’d be looking to add Yermin and Rodon this off season.
Ernie Riles
I want to like Yermin but not that impressed so far. Cannot play the field anywhere and his bat not strong enough for full time DH role. Doesn’t bring much value at all.
bwmiller
I’m a Sox fan so my being a fan of Yermin stems a lot from his time in Chicago but I like Yermin mostly because of what I see in his swing and how I believe that what has limited him most to this point is mostly a lack of confidence in his own ability and in a team remaining committed to him.
He is best off as a teams primary DH and as far as what I have seen across the league this year he definitely has the bat to be a team’s primary DH because I peg Yermin for a .270/.350/.425 type of player
Ernie Riles
Mercedes will be 30 next year and his numbers aren’t close to that in MLB. In the Minors he has achieved those kind of stats. But rare for career minor leaguers to break through after 30. I don’t see it happening and wouldn’t be surprised if he’s DFA’d sooner than later.
bwmiller
It’s not so much his numbers as it is his swing that I like, he looks like Mike Trout to me from the right hand side, same short swing, and Trout is the best hitter in baseball when he is at full strength, if you watch Mercedes ABs and then you watch Trout you will see it, so to me, thirty is young, five to six good seasons in Yermin if he can find a team that commits to him as their everyday DH and play him at catcher or in the field once a week, you know it’s important for players to have that assurance that they are going to get their at bats, and it’s nice to play the field once in a while.
I think if Yermin gets that assurance and gets the regular at bats that he can hit in the bigs and post the numbers a team is looking for from it’s everyday DH. He has a .370 OBP vs lefties this season, not too shabby.
bwmiller
My mistake, he has a .370 OBP vs righties but is only hitting righties at .105 BAA, he is seeing the ball well vs. righties if he’s taking that many walks, the hits will come.
He has an overly aggressive approach against lefties which explains the strikeouts but he’s hitting nearly .300 against left handed pitching so again he’s seeing the ball well, it’s really a matter of refining his approach and getting the reps.
Ernie Riles
Yermin dropped from SFG 4o man on 9/8
bwmiller
Yeah I saw that, I had just posted in another thread how I thought that the best moves this off season would be signing Rodon long term and signing Yermin as their backup catcher and DH but it doesn’t look like they are willing to commit to Yermin, which in a way is saying that they aren’t going to resign Rodon, because Yermin and Rodon both came over from the White Sox and they should have a bond in a way coming from the White Sox, Rodon is going to get a good contract, the White Sox would do well to resign him and Yermin.

I’ve always been a Joc Pederson fan. Good for him !
Benjamin101677
I like Pederson but I think if he is smart he will look some place with a clear picture of winning. The giants don’t appear to have the ability on paper to keep up with the Dodgers or Padres for the division. Than for the wild card teams you figure the 2023 season shows Braves; Mets; and Phillies not in any particular order to be wild card contenders and way ahead of the giants.
I am not a giants fan but I was very disappointed that after there season last year they did nothing to better the team. Weren’t even involved in rumors. Than this past trade deadline they didn’t do anything to try and better the team for 2023. On paper 2023 the giants have a lot of holes to fill
guynamedchris
Rodón replaces Gausman, Alex Cobb replaces Johnny Cueto, Joc Pederson replaces Alex Dickerson. I don’t know how you think those moves didn’t improve the roster. There was absolutely no replacing Buster at catcher, and we all should know that, and it was absolutely the time to see what Bart could do.
You could certainly say they didn’t do enough, but you can’t say they did nothing to better the team.
Benjamin101677
My opinion they didn’t do enough for a team that was in the same division as the dodgers. They had to have full attendance revenue at least the second half that they could have spent. The management tried to get magic in a bottle again for 2022 without spending or having a direction.
If for the sake of argument the giants were not a flunk in 2021 than they had a very short window to win with. They didn’t try and get Freddie freeman; been a huge bat for the team. They didn’t go after any top tier players for 2022. Than at the deadline the giants choose to hold it together instead of getting some help for 2023 and beyond.
Now we sit in September they won’t get a play off spot; they have a average farm system at best and have some key pieces becoming fee agents. The window closed on this current group of players.
Now for the next couple years for sure the giants are going be a below .500 team as they figure things out. 2023 forward instead of having a catcher spot to fill like in 2022 they have a catcher still open; first base spot open; third base spot;’ some holes in the pitching staff.
Been a very mismanaged 12 months in San Francisco
guynamedchris
After last season, they had expiring contracts at SS, an OF, a 1B, and four rotation spots, and of course Buster retired. Most of the guys they signed were not part of the problem. Resigning Crawford obviously has not worked out this year, although I don’t know how the Giants don’t offer him a contract after 2021. And they would have been crazy not to offer Belt a QO. Probably would have been better for both Belt and the Giants if he had declined, because he definitely would have gotten a multi-year deal somewhere, and the Giants could have explored other options at 1B… but Belt did accept the QO, so here we are.
My point is, I’m not worried at all about Zaidi’s ability to fill the holes in the roster. Every year so far, he’s signed multiple players who have exceeded anyone else’s expectations. As for catcher… dude, Bart is the catcher.
Jean Matrac
It’s easy to talk in vague generalities, though I did appreciate the specific you mentioned, Freeman. And Freeman would have helped, but that’s very short term. It’s reasonable to think the Dodgers might not be in the best position having to pay him $27M a year for the 3 years of his age 35, 36, and 37 seasons.
The same applies to guys like Bryant, and Gausman. Those deals could turn bad. Especially with Gausman since no team knows him better than the Giants.
I really wanted FZ to sign Seiya Suzuki. but when I saw the huge overpay by the Cubs, I can understand why FZ passed. Suzuki’s $8M salary is worth the 110 OPS+ he posted this year, but he needs to up that production to be worth the $77M they’ll pay over the next 4 years.
Nobody is more depressed about this season than I am. And, yeah, I wanted FZ to do more, but in each and every case, I can understand why he didn’t. Plus, sometimes you try and sign a guy, and he just wants to play for another team. The control of who gets signed is more limited than fans seem to understand.
Jean Matrac
Yeah, Bart is coming around. Over his last 33 games he’s slashed .300/.333/.510 with 6 HRs and an OPS of .843.
Yanks2
Kind of reminds me of Logan Morrison/Colby Rasmus

Has it felt to anyone else like Pederson has been getting a critical free ride for about half the season? He got off to a great start, but has been really streaky the last two months – that is, when he was healthy. I’d rather let him walk and spend the $$$$ on Judge.
getrealgone2
Because people like him and he’s a “zany” personality. Braves fans were clamoring for him to come back this year. He had a couple of key hits in the post season but overall wasn’t very good.
gmenfan
“Streaky” is a polite way to put it. Some might say “hot garbage” since June.
Redwolves3
Before Pedersen considers an extension he better find out exactly what Zaidi’s offseason plans are for improving the Giants. If Zaidi guarantees he will upgrade with real impactful big time players (full-time position / starting & relief pitching) … then listen to Zaidi’s terms/conditions of an extension. If Zaidi intends to continue his dumpster diving pattern then go to a team who will compete for post season and championships.

Joc is far from enough. We need starting pitching, bullpen, hitting and defense. Nothing promising in the minors. We need a team.

IMO: I fear the Giants will be repeating the same situation as the have with Brandon Belt. Joc Pederson is having a come back season vs a break out season. I don’t think he will develop anymore. He’s already gained weight and lost his once stellar ability to defend.
Jean Matrac
At no time in his career was Pederson a stellar defender.
