Diamondbacks catcher/outfielder Daulton Varsho has impressed so much in the outfield this season that his days behind the plate could be drawing to a close, writes Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. Varsho tells Piecoro that he’s even surprised himself with how well he’s taken to the outfield.
A former top-100 prospect, the 26-year-old former top prospect has drawn immaculate grades for his outfield defense in 2022, tallying 14 Defensive Runs Saved and, according to Statcast, 13 Outs Above Average and 12 Runs Above Average. Those are cumulative totals, so it’s worth noting that Varsho has also spent 175 innings behind the plate this year; had he been a full-time outfielder, those defensive marks would’ve likely been even more eye-catching.
Varsho, who says it’s a personal goal of his to win a Gold Glove, added that he’s not content with his current level of outfield play, citing a few near-catches he missed (on what would’ve been highlight-reel efforts). Varsho labeled himself a perfectionist and spoke of small, incremental gains he could still make in his defensive game — “…[I]f I can add an extra inch by not having to look at the wall and understanding what I can do to get better…” — as part of his hopeful evolution.
Of course, Varsho is far more than just a strong glove in the outfield. He’s built on a solid showing at the plate last summer and turned in a .243/.311/.457 batting line this season, swatting 23 home runs, 20 doubles and three triples while chipping in eight stolen bases (albeit in 14 attempts). It’s a solid, well-round skill set that could leave him as a fixture in center or right field, depending on how the remainder of the Diamondbacks’ young outfield pans out.
Corbin Carroll, regarded as one of the sport’s top prospects — if not the top prospect — prior to his promotion earlier this month, gives Arizona a potential high-impact talent to pair with Varsho in the long term. He’s followed up a combined .307/.425/.611 batting line in the minors this year with a .281/.324/.469 showing through his first eight big league games and now has 24 home runs and 31 steals between the minors and big leagues combined.
Add in the likes of Alek Thomas, himself a top-100 prospect prior to this season’s debut, and 25-year-old Jake McCarthy, who has surpassed all expectations with a strong debut campaign of his own, and the outfield group in Phoenix looks particularly promising. The 22-year-old Thomas has cooled after a solid start and is batting .249/.295/.373 on the season but has turned in plus defensive marks in center. McCarthy, meanwhile, is batting .288/.348/.455 with seven homers, 14 doubles, two triples and a 15-for-16 showing in stolen bases.
It’s a talented, albeit entirely left-handed, group of outfielders around which to build. That there are four players for three spots might make it tempting to continue deploying Varsho behind the dish at times, but his elite play in the outfield would be lost in that scenario. Manager Torey Lovullo told Piecoro that there are no plans for Varsho to start behind the plate for the remainder of the season, further pointing to a long-term move away from the position.
It’s a bit early to label the quartet of lefty-hitting outfielders a true “surplus.” Thomas’ offense has been below average, and it’s fair to wonder whether McCarthy can sustain production that’s been bolstered by a .347 average on balls in play — particularly when he’s making hard contact at a below-average clip. Statcast pegs his “expected” batting average and slugging percentage at .259 and .367 — both well shy of his current marks. Carroll is a top-five prospect in baseball, but he also just turned 22 in late August, so it’s not a given that he’ll immediately break out into stardom.
Still, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic wonders about the possibility of the Diamondbacks utilizing this group of outfielders to bolster the rotation over the winter. There are plenty of teams with outfield needs who’d love to acquire a controllable long-term player to step right onto the 2023 roster. Varsho is controlled through 2026, McCarthy through 2027 and both Thomas and Carroll through at least 2028. Speculating a bit, the Marlins are known to still be looking for their center fielder of the future and have plenty of pitching to dangle in talks with the D-backs. Arizona and Miami previously lined up on a Zac Gallen-for-Jazz Chisholm swap that has benefited both clubs, though the Marlins’ front office has turned over a good bit since that time.
Trading from that quartet of outfielders would thin out the Diamondbacks’ outfield depth, quite likely in a significant way, but they do have some other options on the 40-man roster, including the right-handed-hitting Stone Garrett, who’s out to a blistering MLB debut himself after a nice showing in Triple-A. The free-agent market would also present several affordable, short-term options to plug into the outfield mix, and finding a useful complementary outfielder on the open market is quite a bit easier than finding the type of potentially impact arm that a trade of someone like Thomas could bring.
However general manager Mike Hazen and his staff choose to proceed this winter, the play of the team’s young outfielders will give them plenty of options. And with a lot clicking elsewhere on the roster — Arizona is 26-19 since the All-Star break, a .578 winning percentage — the D-backs could be a shrewd offseason move or two away from reasserting themselves in the National League West more quickly than most would anticipate.

I am really impressed with Varsho. Going from catching to the outfield is a big jump. He seems to have more the catcher build but is doing quite well in the outfield. I’m not even a Diamondbacks fan but a baseball fan over 30 years and I’ve noticed this guy.
SliderWithCheese
Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber both did it easily. Catcher is simple. You just squat there. Look at Molina.

It’s hard to call Schwarber and OF…

It helps to have a father who was a Major League Outfielder.
Though props to Daulton playing CF while Catching. Craig Biggio went from C to 2B to CF to LF back to 2B, though at a much older age.

Varsho bounced around between the outfield, catcher, and infield throughout college, so it’s not like he’s just learning the position.

Varsho’s “catcher build” is actually more like a “Mike Trout build”. Incidentally, Varsho trains with Trout in the off-season.
Yep it is
Had the D-Backs bullpen saved half of what they lost they would be a wild card. Hazen needs a Bona Fide closer

Varsho should move back to C. Kelly is not the future for ARI, but Carroll, McCarthy, and Thomas are.
Rsox
I wouldn’t rule the D’Backs out of making a run at Contreras in free agency. With 1B,2B,and the OF set there aren’t many spots for Az to upgrade. SS is another position they may look to upgrade. A nice Christmas in Arizona could be Diamondbacks fans finding Willson Contreras and Dansby Swanson under the tree
C Yards Jeff
Is Kelly turning in to that guy who’s ceiling may be as a “highly valued” back up?
Contreras, yes! Keep Varsho in the outfield.
rangersfan77
Not to mention Druw Jones is in the pipeline and will likely develop quickly….probably a couple of years…… if Dbacks get some pitching, their future looks bright!
sufferforsnakes
Sure they’re all LH hitters, but my belief is that major league players should be able to hit pitchers from both sides, which 3 of these guys have shown.
Now, about that bullpen……….

Ian Kennedy is an 80-grade choke artist
vaderzim
So is Mark Melancon.
DarkSide830
Well yeah but I know Kennedy’s tendencies from firsthand experience.
MLB Top 100 Commenter
DarkSide:
I disagree. Kennedy is not a choke artist, he just is no longer any good. If you look at stats like hard hit balls and pitches earlier in the year, Kennedy was due to get hit hard.

DarkSide, Vader and Manny
Hindsight is always 20/20, as you judge Melancon and Kennedy.
How is your crystal ball? This year’s Mark Melancon is Kenley Jansen. Would you sign or resign Jansen for next year?
Melancon led the league with 39 saves last year. Jansen is currently the saves leader with 32.. Melancon has had a terrible follow up year. Will Jansen repeat his strong season next year, or be a bust like Melancon?
Kennedy had the 11th most saves last year. Jorge Lopez of Minn. is currently 11th and will finish with about the same number of saves Kennedy had last year. Will Lopez repeat his strong year or be a bust next year? Would you sign or resign him? What does your crystal ball say?
DarkSide830
Like I said, I’ve seen this before. He was shaky at best down the stretch for the Phillies last season.
scottaz
OK, but if you were desperately looking for a closer in the last off-season, and were able to sign two closers—the one with the most saves in MLB the past season and the other with the 11th most saves…wouldn’t you feel pretty good about those signings?

stretch
Actually, you’re the one dreaming if you think AZ would have to throw in a lower level prospect with Thomas to get a starter who has 9 big league starts.
BTW see my post below. The Dbacks need a closer not a starter.
Why would the Dbacks go after a promising starter with 9 games under his belt and trade away an Elite CF, when the Dbacks already have Tommy Henry, Ryne Nelson, Brandon Pfaadt, Blake Walston, Drey Jameson, and probably 4 other higher upside young starters than Edward Cabrera?
sufferforsnakes
They more than just a closer. The rest of the pen has been underwhelming, too, in my opinion.
I would be curious to know how many games the pen has lost this season. Feels like quite a few.

Snakes have been better recently, only at 5 games below .500 as of right now. Hopefully they don’t blow up their system to try to go all in next year. Make sure these guys develop, Snakes don’t want another 2022 Version of Carson Kelly on their hands.

History has shown that winning teams are not generally built through the outfield. At the very least, teams where the outfield is the strongest part of the team usually do not make the playoffs. Just look at Trout’s Angels. Sure there are good teams with strong outfields, they also usually have a strong infield, rotation, or bullpen also. Of the 4, I would probably rate the outfield as the LEAST necessary for a playoff team.
User 3663041837
Wouldn’t be surprised if they trade one of those young outfielders for pitching.
Jung Like My Daddy
That’d be too logical and too “how teams usually handle these situations in the past”.
Trade from a source of strength to improve other parts of the roster.
Marlins come to mind. They could use some long term OF answers and have pitching available.
desertdawg
The d’backs have some strong arms in AA right now. Plus a young short stop. Don’t really see the need to trade a outfielder right now. What they may do is just keep what they have and build through the farm system.
scottaz
desertdog
Another reason why the Dbacks might consider trading one of these 4 elite CF, is that there are 3 more equally talented CF in the pipeline.
The closest is another left-handed CF hitting over .300 in AAA right now, Dominic Fletcher. Next closest is right-handed hitting, former #1 CF Prospect Kristian Robinson who has been sidelined by legal problems, but is still young and should be ready for promotion by mid-season next year. And then there is this year’s #1 pick (#2 overall) Druw Jones another right-handed hitting CF who figures to move rapidly through the minors.
Since all 4 current OF are left-handed hitting, making room for an elite right-handed CF alternative is an attractive prospect.
scottaz
Dbacks real weakness is the bullpen, specifically a closer. So if they trade one of these elite CF, it will be for a young, controllable Closer.
Examples of potential targets would be a package of players starting with:
Emmanuel Clase of Cleve.
Jordan Romano of Tor.
Scott Barlow of KC
Closers are even more of a volatile bust possibility than Prospects, so it’s a mistake to overvalue them. Dbacks know this from present experience. Melancon was the Top Closer in the major leagues last year with 39 Saves and a 2.23 ERA, this year his ERA is 5.20 to go with 17 Saves. So, Clase, Romano and Barlow are extremely high risk flyers, whereas Alek Thomas is much more of a repeatable elite defensive CF with improving offensive skills.
hiflew
Except there are so many spots in the outfield. Why keep 4 when you only have 3 spots. It does not good to have 4 elite outfielders playing 120 games each, when you could have 3 of them play 150 games each and pick up someone to help elsewhere.
Bullpens might be overvalued and very volatile, but they are still required Having a great outfield and no bullpen leads to a lot of losses.
Rsox
Zac Gallen, Merril Kelly, and Madison Bumgarner are pretty much set so far for next season. Ryne Nelson, Tommy Henry and Tyler Gilbert will be in the mix and i would expect at least a similar addition like Zach Davies.
Brandon Pfaat, Blake Walston, Drey Jameson, Bryce Jarvis, and Slade Cecconi should get looks next year as well. So the pitching is coming along
scottaz
Rsox
You are right, the starting pitching does not need to be strengthened by trading an elite CF. But the bullpen/Closer situation may merit that kind of move.

Agree, Giants severely overperformed last year and regressed down this year to a .500 ballclub.

Kelly hasn’t hit, yet the worst manager in baseball keeps him in the leadoff spot vs. lefties. With five outfielders who can all hit, only Tony L would say, ya, we’re not putting Varsho behind the dish anymore because that would actually maximize our offensive production.
The man constantly sits his best bats to play what he thinks are better fielders, but when his staff is giving up lasers all over the yard, it doesn’t matter if Andrew Jones is in center, no one is catching them. Being a D’backs fan is frustrating.
scottaz
bobsugar
I sense you are frustrated with Lovullo, but you can’t seriously be suggesting that a left-handed hitting rookie lead-off against a left-handed starting pitcher?!?! I wouldn’t put any rookie in that position. And traditional wisdom says right-handed hitters are best against left-handed pitchers. So name a better right-handed hitter to lead off…right, the Dbacks don’t have any good right-handed lead off hitter types on the roster. So, I think Kelly is Lovullo’s best option. He’s certainly not an ideal lead off hitter, but he is the best they’ve got.
bobsugar84
I didn’t mean it like that. I should have been a bit more clear. Against righties Varsho SHOULD catch in order to get more of the outfielders playing time.
Against lefties, I do think Carson should start, I just don’t think he should bat leadoff. And I wouldn’t put one of those rooks in to play catalyst. Heck against lefties, Thomas and Varsho probably shouldn’t even be in there! But to not put Varsho behind the dish anymore at all, strongly limits them from an offensive standpoint against the majority of pitchers they will see (right-handers).
bobsugar84
And you’re right they don’t have an ideal bat to put there against lefties but check out Carson’s splits vs lefties (or righties for that matter) and you’ll see how ugly it is. Plus, he is slow on the base paths when he does get on. Marte or even Rojas are better options. Not great options, but better. At least they run well and get on base!

Yankees might need an OF when Farhan signs Aaron Judge

I see the Jays as a good match with their 3 catcher situation and a need for a LH bat ideally who can play CF. Given the Diamondbacks don’t have much behind the plate in prospects or ML talent it could be a good match.
desertdawg
I would not deal any of these outfielders, they all have the ability to play centerfield and win a gold glove they are that strong on defense and have enough offense. They have a shortstop in AA that will probably be the next non-pitcher to break into the lineup starting next year or year after next. They have many pitchers in AA right now that have ML quality arms. Their biggest need is going to be a setup and closer pitcher next year. Future is starting to show in AZ, been a fan since the inception, can’t remember a stronger AZ farm organization. Trade wise watch out for Marte becoming available to build up late inning pitching.

Varsho is about 5/5, not a lot of 5/5 catchers not named Francisco Meija, DBACKS have traded Paul Goldschmidt, Jazz Chisholm and Dansby Swanson so be careful

You and others who continually post this ancient history garbage need to remember something really important. Who did the Dbacks get in return for Jazz Chisholm? The 2022 NL Cy Young Candidate (should be the winner) Zac Gallen!
You make it sound like the Dbacks continually get fleeced while dumping All-Stars. That is not true. I bet when you post on the Nationals website, you constantly say the Nats traded Juan Soto, implying that they got fleeced. It’s an absurd post, and I hope you stop making absurd posts.
