The Braves announced Wednesday that they’ve selected the contract of righty Silvino Bracho from Triple-A Gwinnett. Atlanta created roster space by optioning lefty Kyle Muller to Gwinnett and by recalling righty Huascar Ynoa and placing him directly on the 60-day injured list. Ynoa had Tommy John surgery earlier this summer.
It’ll be Bracho’s second stint of the season with the Braves. The former D-backs right-hander opened the year in the Red Sox organization but was traded to Atlanta for cash back in June just hours after Boston had designated him for assignment. Bracho tossed a scoreless inning with Atlanta before being designated for assignment a second time and successfully passed through outright waivers, at which point he accepted an assignment to Triple-A and remained with the organization.
Despite not getting much of a look in Boston or Atlanta this season, Bracho has had a strong season in Triple-A. Through 57 1/3 innings, he’s pitched to a sharp 2.67 ERA with an excellent 30.4% strikeout rate against a tiny 4.3% walk rate. During his lone inning with the Braves earlier this summer, Bracho’s heater sat at 94.1 mph, which is a hair above his career 93.4 mph mark.
From 2015-20, Bracho was an up-and-down member of Arizona’s relief corps, showing promise on multiple occasions but never quite displaying the consistency required to stick on the big league staff. He looked to have turned a corner in 2018 when he logged 31 innings of 3.19 ERA ball with an above-average 26.4% strikeout rate, but Bracho tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow during Spring Training 2019 and underwent Tommy John surgery.
The Braves can technically control Bracho for another three years if they choose to keep him on the 40-man roster, but it’s likelier that this will be a short-term addition that’ll give Bracho another chance or two to square off against big league hitters. In the likely event that he’s removed from the 40-man roster, he’ll be able to become a free agent this offseason — fresh off a health and successful showing in Triple-A.

Can he start? I really don’t want Odorizzi pitching any more games that matter.
GabrielJames
Nobody outside of Jake and his family want him pitching any more games that matter, haha.
Benjamin101677
Options are limited as to starters and this late in the season don’t want a bullpen game. Think the hope is he gets through 5 innings but I am sure he will have a very short leash on him.
Hopefully Atlanta scores in the first relax jake some and put pressure on Mets

The real question is why hasn’t Muller been starting over Odorizzi already?
Classic case of the Braves trading for something so feeling obligated to use it even though they have better options.
Benjamin101677
Mueller hasn’t failed all that well lately in triple a. Odorizzi was brought inn a innings eater when I think the cost of pitching was too much at the trade deadline
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
At this point in time, I’ve learned not to question the Braves FO. They seem to be on target.
mj-2
What are you talking about? He has a 3.41 era in AAA this year.
GabrielJames
Fresh arm to save a little wear and tear on the pitching staff before the playoffs. Probably only going to see him in Odorizzi starts when the Braves are down 8-0 after two innings.

I’d rather see Rangel, Tarnok, Woods, or Wilson get a spot start instead of running Jake out there again.
Balzenuf
agree
bravesiowafan
@fred id even go with indigo diaz
Benjamin101677
You don’t want to put a rookie into a must win spot. Could be bad for team
And bad for rookies career
richardc
Who is Wilson?? Woods isn’t a starter, and little to no chance Rangel sees an Atlanta mound thus season, regardless of his role..
Wait, (edit) You mean Brooks Wilson who hasn’t pitched all season!?! Lol…This makes more sense now..You just went up and down the 40 man naming pitchers..lol haha…Which is funny, but also shows how you’d rather have ANYONE else pitching..haha
Now, Tarnok, that’s someone I can get behind. Let’s allow him a couple of short starts or two, as to no inflate his innings total for the year, but to get him some excellent experience moving forward for next season…
BTW, off topic, but it is a shame that Kyle Wright is not getting any Cy Young love at all..Last I checked, he wasn’t even being considered as an option..
Then again, the Braves do already have Max Fried and Spencer Strider that are getting some Cy Young love, so maybe the voters think 3 is too many…lol
Plus, there are actually quite a few NL pitchers having EXCELLENT seasons, and with a handful or so having better advanced stats than Wright that’s honestly why..lol Still, he deserves a most improved player award or something..Dude has been a steadying force for this team, and it’s been awesome seeing all his hard work pay off, after soo many fans wanted him traded and wrote him off..
NashvilleJeff
Yep, Wright’s the best # 3 in the league. Braves showed great patience w/him as he worked to refine his repertoire in Gwinnett last year. Charlie Morton’s work w/Wright on Zoom after his starts last season was a big reason he improved. Throwing his pitches harder—-especially his cb and sinker—– after his first few starts this year helped add a “finishing touch” to his stuff. Change has really ticked up in usage and quality too.
Benjamin101677
Braves are just preparing to have someone behind Odorizzi should things go bad.
With Strider going down it made the Braves staff be thin. So Odorizzi gets what I think if he fails last chance of year to start.
It’s possible Mets series could have a double header be taxing to the club and also barring a sweep by either side the division could still be up for grabs next week.
I think mlb really messed up with no tie breaker game.
FredMcGriff for the HOF
I agree Ben. Manfred is slowing destroying MLB.
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
@FredMcGriff for the HOF, I agree the only bigger boob in MLB is… well ah…, No I’m afraid it is Manfred!
Sunday Lasagna
Potential double header Sunday taxing bullpens………No bullpens necessary. Just go retro. Fried, Wright, Morton, Bassitt, deGrom and Scherzer all throwing complete games.
dlw0906
Wampum now that would be exciting.
If ever there was a year and division chase needed the tie breaker game its 2022. This has been the Thrilla In Manilla of MLB. Neither team giving a quarter just slugging it out till the final out of the regular season.
Benjamin101677
Wampunwalloper; did you not see Scherzer break down in the playoffs last year from being over worked??
Most of the pitchers are both sides you want out of the game by the 6-7th inning.
Also not sure you know but Atlanta has only had 1 complete game all year and that was this week by Bryce Elder.
A double hitter favors the Braves they have a deeper liner and a deeper back end of the bullpen with 3-4 pitchers who could close. Yet; a double hitter Sunday and than both teams with 3 games left would be asking for some pitcher to have major arms issues. I don’t expect either they Braves nor the Mets to sweep the other team so this race for division will most likely go into Monday and Tuesday

Silvino Bracho – what a cool “The Sopranos”-esque name.
Benjamin101677
Could be a good move this guy pitched in majors below is fighting for a job 2023 somewhere should be very focused
TradeAcuna
Odorizzi is a type of guy we all want to hate but watch him pitch a big game for the Braves at some point this postseason.
NashvilleJeff
Watch him not even make the Braves playoff roster is more likely.
TradeAcuna
The Braves are way too complacent to keep him out.
TradeAcuna
just like they are with keeping Acuna in the leadoff spot.
NashvilleJeff
Heh heh. Bet Acuna’s 2 homer game the other day was a tough pill for you to swallow, lol.
