Anthony Rizzo has been dealing with back problems for much of the season, and the Yankees first baseman received an epidural on Thursday that will sideline him for the next few games. The plan is to have Rizzo in the lineup on Monday when the Yankees open a homestand against the Twins, manager Aaron Boone told reporters (including Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News). “This is something that should give him a lot of relief the rest of the way this season,” Boone said, also noting that Rizzo received a clean MRI on his back earlier in August.
The lingering back problems are a likely cause of Rizzo’s slump in August, as the first baseman has hit only .200/.282/.371 in his last 78 plate appearances. Rizzo still has a healthy 136 wRC+ for the season even despite these recent struggles, but the Yankees surely need him back at full production for both the playoffs and what has become a surprisingly competitive AL East race with the surging Rays.
More from around the American League…
- The Guardians didn’t have interest in Jesus Aguilar before the first baseman signed with the Orioles, Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. Aguilar spent his first three MLB seasons with Cleveland in 2014-16, playing in only 35 big league games before being claimed by the Brewers in February 2017. While he has enjoyed some success in his career, Aguilar has struggled in 2022, with only a .232/.282/.382 slash line over 463 plate appearances. While the Guards are lacking in offense and Aguilar makes some sense as a first base/DH platoon partner with Josh Naylor, there’s no guarantee that Aguilar would’ve suddenly turned things around in Cleveland.
- Emilio Pagan drew some “mild interest” in trade talks before the deadline, The Athletic’s Aaron Gleeman reports. Acquired as part of a notable four-player swap with the Padres before the season, Pagan’s first Twins season has difficult, with the reliever posting a 4.94 ERA over 51 innings. Though Pagan has a very good 29.8% strikeout rate, he has been homer-prone, his 9.3% walk rate is well below average, and opposing batters are making tons of hard contact. Pagan is arbitration-eligible this winter and might be a non-tender candidate, except the Twins feel they might still be able to deal the right-hander rather than let him go for nothing in a non-tender.
- Rangers prospect Sam Huff has yet to receive a true extended look in the majors, with 10 games in 2020 and 30 games this season. While Texas might call Huff up at some point before 2022 is over, the team will continue giving Huff regular work behind the plate at Triple-A while Jonah Heim continues as the regular catcher for the big league team, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News writes. Heim still needs some seasoning in his own right, with interim manager Tony Beasley noting that Heim “needs to feel [an incresed workload] a little bit. That’s part of getting through the season, something that all everyday catchers have to feel.” Heim has enjoyed a quality season on the whole, but his production has dropped off since the All-Star break, quite possibly because of his career-high number of MLB plate appearances and games played.
puhl
Twins should have taken what they could get for Pagan.

I assume the article should say Cleveland “did” have interest?
The linked “article” for that section has nothing about Aguilar.
I would think they would be interested in him at league minimum.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Hopefully Rizzo responds well to the shot. Beni is also undergoing an MRI for his wrist. I expect them both to miss a few games each. Time for the youngsters to step up!
Yankee Clipper
Florial is being called up as well as Weber. Hopefully they DFA Banda after last night. Cashman should realize his cost-saving moves are not working, when year after year, they fail.
According to multiple reports, Yankees are hitting under .200 over the past 22 games, and they haven’t had offense this poor since 1968, which was the end of a dynasty. This is supposed to be mid-contention window – that’s embarrassing and there is no excuse for this performance or these repeated roster failures.
Yankees keep talking about the future – well, the future is now. They’ve failed in player acquisition, player development, and player management. Although I understand Judge saying they can’t worry about the standings, I disagree. It’s exactly that, “don’t worry, just go out there and get your hits and it’ll be fine” attitude that has them right where they are.
Pauly O’Neill said it best – there’s no urgency. The 90’s Yanks desired to win every single game, every single play. This team, you have Aaron Hicks celebrating a blooper over the 2B’s head.
This team is Cashman’s prime construct – handpicked players, handpicked $325M ace, and handpicked manager. They can’t even win a pennant. If this year plays out as it appears it will, changes are desperately needed. There are many other GMs who, having the same autonomy, would’ve won at least one pennant.

@Yankee; “offense this poor since 1968”? Woah. Telling. Thanks for that intel.
Agree to somewhat disagree about the make up of club? I thought Cashman put together a playoff contender. It’s the injuries that have tripped them up, in the field and at the plate, with Rizzo being one of several examples. Yanks have a very old squad. They’re “limping to the finish line” because if it.
If Steinbrenner decides to go decidedly younger next year, will he stay loyal to longtime loyal employee Cashman? I bet “yes”.
Yankee Clipper
Jeff: Yes, I agree with you, Cashman is very, very good at knowing how to get the club to the playoffs. My point is that despite years of opportunities for change, the team has remained stagnant. Yes, injuries have also played a significant part, but they have every year and he’s failed to plan on that, ie, trading away a SP for an injured, unplayable CFer while simultaneously trading away viable pitching depth in Waldichuck and JPSears.
I’m beginning to think that many other GMs, with a starting point of a young, AL championship series contending team (2017), and a virtually unlimited budget, could’ve (should’ve) at least been a pennant winner by this point.
Cashman has missed so many opportunities to improve the team, such as: Machado; Harper; T Turner; Bassitt; Story; Mad Max (twice); Cole (when younger); Rodon; Castillo, etc…
And he’s retained or extended players that actively tanked the Yankees in crucial games over and over: Sanchez; Torres; Hicks; Gonzales; Stanton (his money should’ve gone to Harper/Machado); IKF (should be UTL); Donaldson; Gallo; Chapman; Locastro; etc.
I do appreciate your input, Jeff, and I could be wrong, but it’s just how I’ve seen Cashman’s operating agenda during the contention window. Thanks, man, I hope you’re doing well.

@Yankee; unabashed Os fan here giddy over our unexpected playoff run. Because of this; much interest in following their competition. I’m definitely focused on this year.
Thanks for the “contention window” view/summary on the Yanks. Hmmm. Some shaky decision making, or lack thereof, indeed. Interesting. Maybe Steinbrenner does move on from Cashman!?
And, me? Things are good. Thank you for asking. Best wishes. Cheers!
Yankee Clipper
Perhaps, but I think Cashman is there to stay. Hey, you guys should be stoked. It’s been a long time for your franchise rebuild, which has been steeped in tradition and fielding competitive teams in the past.
Rutchmann looks great, Henderson began with a HR, and has made some nice defensive plays already, and Bradish looks legit. There’s a really nice complement of new guys to Santander, Mullins, & Hays.
CubsWin108
Yankees clipper confirmed time travler?!?!
Yankee Clipper
Yes, and I hate to ruin the surprise, but it’s another 108 years until the Cubbies win anything again…. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. On the bright side, least your moniker can stay the same…

Good luck with Rizzo. His back problems were well known( Except in NY apparently), And it was the reason why the Cubs didn’t give him an extension but keep believing in medical unicorns.
Yankee Clipper
I don’t doubt that. Yankees will probably give him a 5-year extension.
solaris602
Those back issues for Rizzo have been ongoing, and we all know they don’t just go away. This may give NYY pause if they’ve been considering an extension

I miss Pagan from his time in San Diego. Any team who picks him up will be getting a good 7th and 8th inning arm with a lot of strikeouts, before passing the baton to the closer.

I miss Ducky Buckin Fent. I keep hoping to see him comment on a Yankee post but it’s been crickets all year. I can only assume his busy with his business and hunting/fishing.
Mickey777
I really miss his comments and insight as well. I’m wondering if the name calling and negativity got him down. I must admit it has gotten to me. Never ever any need to be as insulting as some of the posters on this site are. Hope Ducky comes back real soon his positive energy is sorely missed.

Don’t understand the love affair with Odor in the lineup everyday.
Jack Buckley
Yankees are must see TV, the team is collapsing and the Yankee announcers are hysterical, too funny
njbirdsfan
Um, Huff is 24. At some point, play the guy or just trade him while there’s still value. I sometimes wonder if some teams realize they can actually just move on instead of letting it get to the point of the entire league finding out their can’t miss prospect is a miss.
Dalton1017
He has hit .287 in the majors. Rangers just have wanted him to get regular AB’s
