5:56pm: New York officially announced Wiessert’s selection, as well as the previously-reported placement of Nestor Cortes on the 15-day IL and the reinstatement of Giancarlo Stanton. In order to create a spot on the 40-man roster, New York transferred center fielder Harrison Bader from the 10-day to the 60-day IL. Bader has already been on the IL since June 27, so the move is procedural and doesn’t affect his return window. Bader, who’s dealing with plantar fasciitis in his right foot, hasn’t yet begun a minor league rehab assignment.
11:57am: The Yankees will select the contract of right-hander Greg Weissert prior to tomorrow’s game with the Athletics, according to Eric Hubbs of Barstool Sports (Twitter link). A corresponding move will need to be made to officially add Weissert to the 40-man roster, and the New York Post’s Joel Sherman reports that the Yankees will be placing another pitcher on the injured list.
Weissert’s first MLB appearance will be his debut in the Show. An 18th-round pick out of Fordham in the 2016 draft, Weissert posted solid but unspectacular numbers in his first pro seasons before returning with a flourish after the canceled 2020 minor league season. The right-hander has been getting better as he has gotten closer to the majors, with a 1.47 ERA over 36 2/3 innings of Double-A ball and a 1.85 ERA in 82 2/3 Triple-A frames.
This season has seen Weissert deliver a 36.8% strikeout rate in 46 innings of Triple-A ball, which is more than enough to counter a more average 10.4% walk rate. Batters have simply not been able to do much against Weissert this year, with only 22 total hits. Over his last 23 games and 23 1/3 innings, Weissert also hasn’t allowed a single run, either earned or unearned.
The bullpen went from being a major strength to more of a question mark for the Yankees in recent weeks, as Chad Green and Michael King were both lost to season-ending injuries and the likes of Clay Holmes, Miguel Castro, Albert Abreu, and — just yesterday — trade deadline acquisition Scott Effross were also lost to the injured list. Weissert will provide some reinforcement, while Holmes, Castro, and Zach Britton are all on the way back, though it remains to be seen which new pitcher (as per Sherman’s report) has now also been sidelined.

They’re polishing his plaque for Monument park as we speak.

right next to Oswaldo Cabrera’s no. 95.

Interesting addition. Weissert not listed among the Yankees’s top 30 prospects. Shows you how useless they are. Wonder who’s going on the IL? Go Greg!!!
Ronk325
Weissert’s exclusion from the Yankees top 30 has more to do with him being a 27 year old reliever in AAA than his level of talent. With that said, he’s pitched very well the last two years and has definitely earned a call up
Mickey777
Ronk325,
True, but 27 year olds can make major contributions and be true prospects as well. My point was how unreliable the ranking of prospects really is. Fun to look at and they make money for the people who put them together, but they are unreliable at best.
Ronk325
Yeah I get what you’re saying, although prospect evaluation has gotten a lot better in recent years.
Sideline Redwine
Look at a top 100 list from a few years ago…almost every player has followed suit according to the ranking; sure, there are some who do not pan out, just as in every sport, but I think those rankings are pretty solid. 2018 for example: seven of the top ten are legit stars or have had solid seasons, two are regular contributors in the bigs, and the only other is expected to make it next year.

@Ronk325
Agreed! Always look forward to your responses. Stay cool.
LordD99
He’s really taken off the last couple months after the Yankees tweaked his slider.
Mickey777
Top ten prospects in all of the majors, is very far away from not being even in the top 30 of 1 team. 30 Major League teams each with a top 30. That means the rating services don’t consider him in the top 900!
tstats
Not exactly a better top thirty could mean one guys number thirty is better than someone’s 25

I suspect it will be Lucas Luetge going on the IL as he hasn’t pitched since Aug. 18.

Bright Side
The only shocking thing about this story is that it took this long to promote him. Cashman’s stubbornness is legendary.

“Weissert’s first MLB appearance will be his debut in the Show.”…..straight out of the Department of Redundancy Department.
LordD99
The Yankees keep manufacturing these arms, but the injuries (and trades!) are making it more challenging!
oneiblnd
So we traded. A LH starter for a guy who just got designated to the 60-day. Explain to me how this was a good trade? Everyone of these trades has been a bust.
Mickey777
Oneiblnd,
Hard to defend the Monty/Bader trade, but love what Benny has done once he got comfortable. Trevino and Effross will contribute I hope.
Yankee Clipper
Although I agree with both assessments herein, I do believe it’s compounded…Monty/Bader is problematic enough. Nevertheless, the pitching sell-off to replace him with Montas certainly has deleterious effects on both this season and the future for the Yankees, imo.
And, in some strange juxtaposition, they refuse to bring up young players that can really contribute if given a legit chance (Florial, for example) in lieu of keeping long-time deadweight, like Hicks, on the roster, when Florial (and many others) will be exposed to Rule V or out of options after this year.
It makes me wonder if they understand the premise of a championship window….

Not a Yanks fan but hoping Wiessert does well.

I’m not hip to the arcana of MLB rules, so I’d appreciate some help from those who are.
Was he already on the 60-day IL when the Cardinals put him on the IL on June 27? If so, 60 days would be up on August 26, tomorrow, if all seven days of the week are counted in these things. If a new 60-day IL stint starts today, that would last until October 24th. I’m not understanding how putting him on the 60-day IL today doesn’t affect his return window.
lukesdad
Placing him on the 60 day injury list opens up a spot on the 40 man. It is retroactive to when he last played in game. He does not need to be out another 60 days. I believe this move was procedural so that Weissert could be added.
Poster formerly known as . . .
Thanks, lukesdad. But I’m still confused. Since he last played on June 26, he’ll have been out for 60 days tomorrow. Are they planning on taking Weissert off the roster on the following day and sending him back down? I don’t understand how they can otherwise keep Bader on the 60-day to keep Weissert’s roster spot open without starting another 60-day clock for Bader. I thought players couldn’t come back until the entire span of either 15 days or 60 days was completed. Was I mistaken about that?
These are probably dumb questions, but that’s me.
28rings
the 60 day IL is for a MINIMUM of 60 days… once they accrue that 60 day minimum, you can keep the player on there as long as you want until the end of the season… they come back off after the World Series and have to be added back to the 40 man roster before the Rule V Draft
AHH-Rox
If you move somebody from the 10-day IL to the 60-day IL, the 60 days starts from when the player initially went on the 10-day IL.
Which as the article says was June 27 for Bader.
Poster formerly known as . . .
Okay, probably another dumb question, but — 10 days was up in early July. Did they keep putting him the 10-day until finally putting him on the 60-day?
bseventeen
The 10 day IL (or 60 day IL) is just the minimum time the player has to be off the active roster. If the player is still not healthy the team does not have to put him on another 60 list, he simply stays there until he is ready to be activated.
Poster formerly known as . . .
Got it. Thanks, sir.
lukesdad
A player doesn’t count against the 40 man roster when placed on the 60 day IL. Once Bader, Severino or others on the 60 day are ready to contribute and are activated someone has to be removed from the 40 man and exposed to waivers.
28rings
the IL stints are MINIMUMS, not MAXIMUMS. If you go on the 10, you can’t come back after only 8 or 9 days. Conversely if you need 15 days to heal, as long as you’ve passed the initial 10 day stint you can come back up. the reason they wait as long as possible is just in case a guy is able to come back in 59 days or less they don’t want to put them on the 60 day IL
BmoreBallistics
Starts his mlb career off with a hbp, balk, hbp total of 2 in that sequence. He has stud numbers in aaa… best slider in minors according to baseball America… hope tonight was getting jitters out of the way. If he can’t handle oak.. imagine yanks stadium. They may want to trade him before his value really drops
LordD99
First-game jitters. Pretty common and pretty understandable.
28rings
now that he’s on the 40, they can’t trade him until after the season is over
alumofuf
Pretty bad first game appearance. Welcome to the show Weissert. Now Monty pitches tomorrow. Good luck Monty!
