7:06PM: The Yankees officially placed Chapman on the 15-day IL, retroactive to August 24.
6:14PM: The Yankees will place left-hander Aroldis Chapman on the 15-day injured list due to a leg infection, manager Aaron Boone told the YES Network’s Jack Curry (Twitter links) and other reporters.
Chapman last pitched on August 19, and Boone said part of that layoff has been due to the reliever’s battle with an infection that developed after Chapman got a leg tattoo. Boone stated that he believes Chapman will pitch again this season, but the lefty will now be out until at least the second week in September, even accounting for a few days of backdating on his IL placement.
The unusual injury adds to what has been a tough season for Chapman, who already missed over five weeks due to left Achilles tendinitis. By the time Chapman returned to the active roster, Clay Holmes had taken over as New York’s closer, leaving Chapman relegated to lower-leverage roles rather than even a solid set-up job. Since beginning his season with 10 1/3 scoreless innings, Chapman has struggled to a 7.08 ERA over his last 20 1/3 innings of work.
Even with Chapman far less than his usual effective self, his IL placement is another hit to a bullpen that has suddenly been crushed by injuries over the last couple of months. Holmes may be back from his own IL stint within a few days’ time, but Holmes and Chapman are joined by Scott Effross, Miguel Castro, Zack Britton, and Albert Abreu on the injured list, while Michael King and Chad Green have already been ruled out for the rest of the season. Wandy Peralta and Lucas Luetge are the only remaining left-handers in New York’s relief corps now that Chapman is out.
The Yankees entered Saturday’s action with a comfortable 8.5-game lead in the AL East, as an ongoing five-game winning streak has eased some concerns after a mediocre stretch of play since the All-Star break. Getting some of those injured relievers back before the playoffs will further bolster New York’s chances in October, but in Chapman’s case, the question must be asked whether the Yankees could conceivably leave him off a playoff roster altogether.
While Chapman is a seasoned playoff performer with a 2016 World Series ring to show from his time with the Cubs, he’ll need to return in good health and then deliver some consistent outings in September to clinch his spot for the postseason. This is also the last season of Chapman’s three-year, $48MM contract, so a platform for free agency is also undoubtedly on Chapman’s mind.
Meh
It is interesting for a 34 year old veteran who is struggling oin a contract year… to act so irresponsible. He may have mentally just checked out and wants to take his millions and call it a career
Sounds like Chapman has been getting pointers from Sale.
Anyone remember Sale’s infamous “Belly Button Ring Infection” of 2018?
Altuve ended this guys career in the 2019 ALCS. He’s been finished ever since. But Buzzers….. blah blah blah
I doubt he thought he was taking a risk when he got a tattoo. Are you so judgemental when anyone gets a skin infection? Since they technically, with the benefits of hindsight, likely could have acted differently to prevent infection? These things happen, relax
Seems questionable.
Leg Infections sound fun
Leg infections,,, where ? Under the foot?
Reportedly from a tattoo.
A tattoo with his wife’s name and pic on it?
According to Aaron Boone, he has an infection in his leg stemming from a tattoo he recently received. The NY media is going to have a field day with this one.
You mean the tabloids that prioritize clickbait over actual news.. Mike Lupica, starf@%ker supreme, piped another column in which he whined and cried that Chapman wasn’t pitching against the Mets in the tabloid-hyped “Subway Series”.
I had no idea that Lupica was still around. Thought he’d retired years ago.
I was just going to say the same thing about Lupica. I remember him being really obnoxious on the ESPN show years ago. Haven’t heard his name is a long time. To be fair, the NY media is highly obnoxious in general, but still not a good look for Chapman. Probably a benefit for the Yanks though, as his pitching has been pretty bad.
Lupica has a column on the MLB site occasionally. Not a fan.
I remember him being really obnoxious on the ESPN show years ago.
=================================
I remember when he got sober. He then went on a couple of rants about drinking in the stadium. I applaud anyone who decides to stop drinking. But that doesn’t mean the rest of the world has to follow suit.
Past that, the NY media are pikers compared to the RS media in terms of be obnoxious.
Rumors are that he was recently sponsored by Neosporin and got their tattoo as part of his obligation.
This is just another reason why tattoos are stupid.
Everyone likes stupid things
Don’t ask Tatis for advice on how to treat a skin infection.
Everyone knows that simply rubbing some Robitussin on cures at all.
Vicks cures all and brown sugar treats all open wounds
You must be from the south.
He doesn’t know where he’s from!
Put some Windex.
No silly that HGH was for ringworm. Shocked Tatis shoulder didn’t heal from the injections or gummies?
Darn it! Gee dang it.
Limiting those innings. Smart. LOL.
Limiting those innings.
Million dollar athletes getting tattoo infections and ringworm lol
You can’t make this s*&t up.
Don’t understand how you don’t wait until the offseason.
and more so that he was on the IL past month. Its like thats Mets player who was on the IL then broke his ankle stepping in a hole while horse back riding or something of that nature.
It was got hurt chasing boars on his farm
C’mon Chappy isn’t Yoenis Cespedes!
But you should see the tattoo it’s awesome.
It’s probably Rajai Davis’s name in cursive to commemorate Chapman’s greatest postseason moment
Can’t wait until the season is over so I don’t have to see that domestic abuser in pinstripes anymore. He can take that clown Domingo with him too.
There’s no evidence that Chapman is a domestic abuser. He was suspended for locking himself in his garage and shooting his gun like an idiot. German, on the other hand, slapped his girlfriend in view of an MLB official. He apologized publicly:
“It’s definitely a big mistake he made and he understands that, and at the same time it’s, ‘What are you going to do with that mistake?'” Stanton said. “So you’re going to improve and look to improve to make everyone around you better and improve yourself. You can show that, and he looks determined to do so. Now it’s just giving him the chance to show that.”
“Once you can get up and stand in front of the team and address how you’re feeling and how you’d like things to go, then that’s when the dynamic changes from silence. Moving forward, we’re all here. That’s what a team is for, and in the clubhouse we all have difficult things that go on, some a lot worse than others, but it’s our job to support in the right way when given the opportunity.”

Permanent unforgiveness isn’t my thing, as long as the offender admits guilt and apologizes.
“If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities,
O Lord, who could stand?”
Not me.
So you think shooting up your garage in rage is better?
Better than assaulting a woman? Every time. You don’t?
I prefer domicile abuse to domestic abuse, all day, every day.
No I don’t prefer a crazy person randomly shooting a gun that can kill a women, child or anyone near by.
We disagree then. I prefer a stupid rage confined to the inside of a garage that ends up hurting no one to a physical assault.
You really think bullets stay inside a garage?
His did.
You’re judging the result, not the action.
No, I’m judging two specific types of bad behavior: one in which a woman is definitely assaulted by a bully; another in which a reckless person in a fit of rage fires a gun inside a building, not intending to hurt anybody.
You, on the other hand, and the Mets fan above, are judging the second action by a hypothetical potential result and apparently ignoring the actual result of the first action.
That being said, it’s late. Good night.
One last postscript:
In my world, intent also matters. Under U.S. law, it matters too.
Buenas noches.
People drive drunk not intending for anything to go wrong. The car is their weapon of choice. And it is a weapon.
He’s judging the reality, not the fantasy. Fact: no one got hurt.
His intent was to not hurt anyone. Fact: no one got hurt.
@Fink Ployed- everyone one this site probably wants to assault you. Could you just let it go already? Since it’s already been handled. Smh
Until now, I’ve avoided muting anyone. But I’ve decided that remarks like yours (“everyone one [sic] this site probably wants to assault you”) are what ruins the experience of discussing baseball on this site, and there’s no good reason to put up with it. From now on, I’m muting people like you, and you’re the first.
Not me! Fink can be obnoxious, and sometimes wrong, like most of us, but he is well informed and argues his perspective well! As long as we have freedom in Jesus and the US constitution, for free speech, I stand behind him!
Depends on calibur and garage, but it’s not hard to believe. How many guns have you shot?
Thank you, sir.
@Fink Ployed- Stop taking my comments so personal, and stop being so sensitive. I was just kidding no reason to mute, unless you really want to. All up to you. Sorry man.
“People drive drunk not intending for anything to go wrong. The car is their weapon of choice.”
It’s not a weapon of choice unless the driver is choosing to make it a weapon.
Drunk driving is reckless, stupid, inconsiderate, selfish and dangerous. But if someone is driving drunk and unintentionally hits someone, that’s not the same as deliberately plowing into pedestrians while sober, as some psychos and terrorists have done, even if the resulting carnage is comparable.
Likewise, there’s a difference between firing a gun inside a garage, which also is reckless, stupid, inconsiderate, selfish and dangerous, and using a gun to deliberately shoot someone in a premeditated murder.
I hope you can see the difference.
None of the actions we’re discussing here are good, but they’re not identical.
I thought better of it and unmuted you. I realized it was only hurting me. I remembered a story that I needed to take to heart:
‘Once upon a time there was a Greek philosopher who told one of his disciples to give money to anyone who insulted him, for three years. At the end of this period of testing the master said to him, “Now you may go to Athens to learn wisdom.” Entering Athens the disciple met a wise man who was sitting by the city gate insulting all the passers-by. He did the same to the disciple who immediately burst out laughing. “Why do you laugh when I insult you?” demanded the wise man. “Because for three years I have been giving money to those who insulted me, and now you are doing it for nothing.” “Come into the city. It belongs to you,” replied the wise man. Abba John, who was in the habit of recounting this story would add: “That is the gateway to God.”’
Thanks for making me aware of how far I need to go — and for free! You’re a generous man, All Rise99.
@Fink Ployed- thank you. I see Samuel muting everyone, the worlds biggest troll on here. I can’t believe his hatred towards the Yankees, and his disloyalty towards the Royals, all together. I do agree with the majority of your comments in regards to the Yankees, please keep them coming.
Real talk: I once contracted MRSA which is a type of staph bacteria from a gym. It’s freaking nasty and invaded my entire outer body; I looked like a burn victim up close. It’s very contagious so I had to quarantine from my live-in gf at the time. A full cycle of antibiotics took care of it right away.
I’m glad you were able to get rid of it. Sounds awful.
Thanks! I’m a pretty healthy dude (knock on wood) but it was a strange experience for sure.
Meh.
How do you get a leg infection when you are sitting on the bench?
They paid him $48 million and he got an infection from tattoo? Good lord, what’s going to happen to Cole, is a body part just going to drop off?
Probably an infected ingrown hair/nail from his daily facials and manicures.
Tatis has some ointment for that.
Hahaha
Domingo German no-hitter through 5.
Mike Brosseau’s portrait is going to look great on Chapman.
A platform year of not being able to get the ball over the plate, when he does, getting smacked around, and oft-injured. The Yankees mistake was bringing him back for the big contract. He’s be OK, not special, and that follows many relievers who get signed for big money…they can’t sustain success. Only a few in recent history have shown consistency…Mo, Hoffman and Wagner. Tough job to retain dominance.
Time to say good riddance
OT: I’m liking the outfield of Beni, Judge and Cabrera.
Couldn’t wait til the season ended to get a tattoo?
If there isn’t anything I know from tatted folks (some of my friends are), it’s usually done impulsively after experiencing “inspiration”.
Maybe a coupon was about to expire.
It is interesting for a 34 year old veteran who is struggling oin a contract year… to act so irresponsible. He may have mentally just checked out and wants to take his millions and call it a career
Did he get a tattoo with a used needle?
He beat a woman and fired a weapon at her. Manfred said it was ok and gave him a super short suspension.
Years later he is still making awful decisions. Atleast he didn’t commit the horrible act of exposing cheating in baseball that was also excused and now people like Alex Corra a 2 time cheat are celebrated. Cheating pays in sports and politics!
“He beat a woman and fired a weapon at her.”
What show was that, “NCIS”?
Manfred is awful13 hours ago
He beat a woman and fired a weapon at her.
================================
No on both accounts. However, if you can support what you said, please feel free to post that support. Otherwise, you’re a liar.
I believe there has been a rise in tattoo complications lately. Guess Chapman was one of them.
I’m baffled at Boone keeping Marinaccio out there when he obviously had no command from his first batter.
You can always stop at, “I’m baffled at Boone…”
Pretty much sums up his tenure for me.
He’s frustrating. On the one hand, he has the 10th-best regular season managing record in baseball history. On the other hand, his postseason record is an underwhelming .500. He sometimes seems to overthink things and get in his own way. Other times, he fails to adjust to what’s happening in front of him. Marinaccio clearly didn’t have it tonight.
Don’t go giving him all the credit now for that 10th best record in regular season…. If you were giving the teams that the front office gives him year in and year out… it’s def possible.
To FB: He is a good manager, but may be overrated. You are a tough customer. Like you., I do worship the feet of Craig Counsel. He is a good manger. I do not see him as elite as most brewer fans do!
Which begs the question: if the Yankees have another early exit from the playoffs and the Marlins fire Mattingly would the Yankees possibly make a change and replace Boone with Mattingly?
@Rsox It all depends if Mattingly wants the job. He was passed over the first time when they hired Girardi. Boone’s job isn’t secure regardless of his contract status. I’m also not sure whether Mattingly will get to pick his own coaches since it appears the front office is making most personnel decisions.
@Yankee Clipper- not a Boone guy at all. I’d take Bam Bam at this point. Lol. Not from the Flintstones either!
It’s not often that LeMahieu throws a game away, but there’s a first time for everything.
Yankees were back to being hitless wonders anyway. Wretched game after a stellar effort by German.
Strikes an eerily similar chord to last season… the inconsistency is so detrimental to the club, particularly when they’ve secured a great performance from the SP staff. Can’t squander those opportunities and expect to get anywhere in the postseason.
Even last game they had virtually no offense, if not for the Judge blast.
The injuries to this bp and poor trades at deadline by cashman so far is there downfall. Not to mention yanks have one of the lowest base running IQS.
I don’t know what goes on in the Yankees club house, but I think one of the problems that team has is lack of definitive leadership.
Pelvic Inflammation?
Doctors will continue to flush the sand out of his pelvic region.
Hold on!
You mean this individual got a tattoo during the season?
The Yankees should shut him down for the rest of the season and keep him off the roster!
What a Idiot!
My dad beat me ’cause mine said “Mother”
But my mother naturally liked it and beat my brother
‘Cause his tattoo was of a lady in the nude
And my mother thought that was extremely rude
Should have used Odorono!
Be reasonable and give Chapman a break. He’s 34 and hit the age where almost every player’s career ends
Hoyt Wilhelm pitched when he was 49. Jesse Orosco pitched when he was 46. John Franco pitched when he was 44. Mariano Rivera pitched when he was 43. Dennis Eckersley pitched when he was 43. Trevor Hoffman pitched when he was 42. Mike Timlin pitched when he was 42. Kent Tekulve pitched when he was 42. LaTroy Hawkins pitched when he was 42. Roberto Hernandez pitched when he was 42. Rich Gossage pitched when he was 42. Dan Plesac pitched when he was 41. Jose Mesa pitched when he was 41. Mike Stanton pitched when he was 40. Lee Smith pitched when he was 39. David Weathers pitched when he was 39. Billy Wagner pitched when he was 38.
Getting into the starters, Hoyt Wilhelm pitched when he was 49. Jamie Moyer pitched when he was 49. Phil Niekro pitched when he was 48. Nolan Ryan pitched when he was 46. Randy Johnson pitched when he was 46. Tommy John pitched when he was 46. Charlie Hough pitched when he was 46. Bartolo Colon pitched when he was 45. And the list goes on.
And back in the day, the all-time oldest, Satchel Paige, pitched when he was 59.
How many of these guys excelledWhen old! Longevity does not mean much unless you are productive! Nice list, as usual, your work amazes me!
Well, you know about Mo Rivera of course, and most of these guys were effective well past the age of 34. And these are just pitchers. If you look at the all-time highest WAR position players, there were plenty who were productive beyond 34. Look at Pujols, with an .864 OPS at 42.
As usual, a quality defense of your opinion! We agree to disagree! Thank You!
34 is when a lot of backend starters transition to relievers, it’s not impossible for Chapman to still be decent it just probably won’t be in New York following the conclusion of the Yankees season
Yeah, he’s still hitting 101 MPH on the radar gun, so he should be able to pitch somewhere.
Unbold prediction Chapman will never pitch another significant inning for the Yankees!!!
I doubt that very much, Mick.
You may be right Fink! But he’s a free agent at the end of the year and they probably have to make room for Holmes, Severino, and Britton this year. They must be annoyed/disappointed/angry with his performance and behavior lately.
I suppose your prediction could come true if he’s out long enough with this infection.
Every inning is a significant inning for the Yankees
So visible tattoos are cool but long hair or beards are not? I cannot believe there’s not wording in these MLB contracts that if you miss time due to a new tattoo infection or get injured doing something not baseball related you get paid nothing during that time on the injured list.
MLB’s Collective Bargaining Agreement denotes a number of prohibited activities:
“5.(b) The Player and the Club recognize and agree that the Player’s
participation in certain other sports may impair or destroy his ability
and skill as a baseball player. Accordingly, the Player agrees that he
will not engage in professional boxing or wrestling; and that, except
with the written consent of the Club, he will not engage in skiing, auto racing, motorcycle racing, sky diving, or in any game or exhibition of football, soccer, professional league basketball, ice hockey or other sport involving a substantial risk of personal injury.”
Thank You! Why is this not enforced more. I remember Madison Baumgarner getting hurt moto biking. I think the woke Giants still paid him millions. Go play improperly, you should go broke!
Bc teams still want to attract top free agents. And you know wealthy folks want to enjoy their fancy toys and activities. It’s not political. Agreed that there should be some enforcement exercised.
