1:23PM: The Yankees officially announced that Banda was signed to a Major League contract. To create roster space, right-hander Luis Gil (who underwent Tommy John surgery in May) was recalled from the minors and moved to the 60-day injured list.
1:01PM: The Yankees have agreed to a deal with left-hander Anthony Banda. ESPN’s Marly Rivera was among the reporters to note earlier today that Banda was present in the Yankees’ clubhouse.
With Aroldis Chapman going on the 15-day injured list yesterday, New York quickly filled that void with another left-handed reliever. Banda joins Wandy Peralta and Lucas Luetge as the southpaw options in an injury-plagued bullpen, though Chapman and Zack Britton are expected to be back at some point in September.
The Yankees will be the ninth different organization of Banda’s career, and he has been action at the MLB level with five of those teams. That includes a combined 26 innings with the Pirates and Blue Jays this season, with a 5.88 ERA to show for Banda’s 2022 resume. Advanced metrics paint a much more favorable picture of Banda’s performance than his ERA, as a gigantic .446 BABIP might be to blame for many of Banda’s struggles.
Banda was a notable prospect early in his career before he was waylaid by injuries, and the second act of his career has seen the left-hander now convert to full-time relief pitching. He has a 4.98 ERA over 59 2/3 innings since the start of the 2021 season, though a 3.90 SIERA in that same span is perhaps a better reflection, given Banda’s lack of batted-ball luck.
Toronto acquired Banda from Pittsburgh in early July, and Banda than chose free agency rather than accept an outright assignment to Triple-A in early August. That led to a new minors deal with the Mariners, but he made only four appearances with Seattle’s Triple-A affiliate before enacting an opt-out clause earlier this week.

How will Yankee fans handle the Mets being better than them for the next decade?
VonPurpleHayes
I mean can we see how the playoffs play out before we crown someone a winner? Geez.
Baseball dude
Sure, but the Yankees are fortunate to have established a big lead early in the season. They aren’t set up as a solid post season team.
YankeesBleacherCreature
It’s a good thing postseason games will be played.
thecoffinnail
Talk to me when the Mets have 27 championships. Who cares if they are better for the next 10 years? By then Cohen will have gone broke trying to buy a championship the “Dodger way” without success and then the Mets will go right back to being the NL East’s door mat. Careful with the ego though. How far back are the Braves now?
User 401527550
Listen to you brag about all those championships before you were born and telling others to watch their ego.
SalaryCapMyth
@thecoffinnail. Did YOU really accuse the Dodgers of buying their championships? Pretty sure they are no more or less guilty of that than the Yankees. In any event you are just being ignorant if you don’t acknowledge player development has more to do with it. Sure they tend to sign their own players to large contracts but most of them are their developments.
Darryl Rose
Agreed for the most part.
1. Dodgers do a great job of development even though they have amongst the worst place in the draft order.
2. If they out spend wveryone else they are making a more significant commitment to winning then anyone.
So good for them.
SalaryCapMyth
The Dodgers wouldn’t have to outspend everyone to be a winning club. Tampa Bay proves that. Anyone want to mention the connection between these two teams?
CaptainJudge99
@TheFAKEMetsFan22- They will? Who says so Stevie Cohen’s pockets? You got a crystal ball, or something like it in your possession? Smh

Are we talking about the same Mets who just got swept in Yankee Stadium?
User 401527550
Bragging about a two game sweep to a team that two game swept you earlier is pretty funny.
Poster formerly known as . . .
As opposed to bragging about being better than a team against whom your team has a 2-2 record this year, with each team scoring 13 runs in the four games?
Rsox
Sounds like when Arod/JLo were trying to buy the Mets and guaranteed a championship withing their first 5 seasons.
Make it to the playoffs this year and then talk

The Lolmets just got swept

… And the Yankees got swept at Citi Field!!
Poster formerly known as . . .
The original poster in this thread said the Mets were better. How can a fan of one team say his team is better than another team when the teams split the season series and scored the same number of runs?
Flanster
I agree with that

Will deGrom and Max pitch that long? I’d be concerned more about the Braves.

Better at…what? Cheesy, lame things like a huge apple popping up whenever a HR is hit? Steve Cohen and all his filthy lucre will never cure the fact that the Mutts are now, and always will be the Sideshow. The Big Tent will always be at 161st and River.

He has to be a step up from Chapman. Let Chapman finish out the year on the IL.

Banda throws hard. Now, if he can only find the plate…

Banda Panda

Sunday AM: If you can make it to Oakland by 1:00 pm we’ve got a deal.
Sunday PM: Thanks for the memories
JerryBird
I don’t recall much about this guy. I had to look him up. Can’t say I’d put much faith in him, or is there something I missed? Everybody throws hard anymore, just need to find someone who can get outs.
“Advanced metrics paint a much more favorable picture of Banda’s performance than his ERA”. This is why advanced metrics were used, to justify this desperate acquisition. I hope he works out. I’m not much of a Yankee fan, but I do respect what the franchise has done in the annals of MLB history. Good luck on this one.
StudWinfield
Almost for sure he is just filling a roster spot (Chapman IL) till Holmes is activated by Tuesday. He was probably closer to OAK than the AAA team currently playing in Nebraska

Disgusting watch the NYY losing againg A,s , Hard to swalow. more 9 inning 2 on top. No relif pitcher at all

One hit? ONE GOD DAMN HIT??

Banda has a solid arm just walks people. Curious to see how he does in pinstripes.

Definitely surprised Yankees signed Banda, a Zaidi dumpster dive castoff.

Since being sent to St. Louis, Jordan Montgomery is 4-0 with a 1.76 ERA, 2.21 FIP and 0.82 WHIP. But some Yankee fans said they preferred Schmidt anyway. In his two starts this year, Clarke has lasted a total of 7.1 innings and yielded 4 earned runs and a .321 opponent average for a 4.91 ERA, and he gave up the 4 ER to one of the worst offenses in baseball in a huge pitcher’s park.
Gio Urshela is credited with less WAR value than Donaldson, but he has a higher BA and OPS, the same number of RBI and one less run, and he’s making only $6,550,000, with another year of arbitration in 2023.
Donaldson is being paid $23M this year, $21M next year, and in 2024 the Yankees owe him a $6M buyout if they want to ditch him — when he’s 38 years old.
Of course Yankee fans were happy to get rid of Sanchez in that trade, so how’s Gary doing? Defensively, not bad. He’s credited with 2.6 Framing Runs Above Average, which ranks him 25th, just below Yadi and Zunino, and just above Maldonado. He ranks 22nd in Fielding Runs Above Average, tied with Will Smith and above Yadi and Maldonado.
Offensively, he’s hitting for a low average and his 95 wRC+ is slightly below average, but he’s 10th in RBI among catchers and 14th in Runs with 12 HR, all of which is much better than Higgy, whose wRC+ is 30 points lower.
B-Ref credits the combination of Sanchez and Urshela with 2.4 bWAR. They credit the combination of Donaldson and Higgy with 2.4 bWAR. Now consider how much Donaldson is costing and how long the Yankees are on the hook.
But Cashman also got back a catcher in that trade, Rortvedt, who was activated and sent to Triple-A at the beginning of August. He’s said to be a defense-first backstop and his stats appear to confirm that, although he has some pop. Maybe another Higgy-type?
And then there’s IKF. DRS likes his defense, but OAA doesn’t. I’ve defended him in the past, but after a season of Gleyber at short, the bar was low. I like that he doesn’t strike out a lot, but his 81 wRC+ is well below average. I’m more than ready to see Peraza at short.
All told, I’m not sure the trade for Donaldson, IKF and Rortvedt was a smart move, especially with Donaldson’s paychecks in mind. And the Monty trade for a centerfielder in a boot looks worse by the day.
Yankee Clipper
Fink: Your post reads like a Ducky Fent response to the Yankees moves. Ducky predicted, consistently, that these moves were subpar. He specifically wrote that if a catcher was going to be replaced, it needed to be Higgy, not Sanchez, and Sanchez needed a playin with a Trevino-type. He also cited IKF’s sub-100 WRC+ as tolerable to Yankees Nation only for a short duration, after which we would tire of it, quickly. Ducky repeatedly said the Yankees primary concern should be their offense this year. More offense…
He was right. You are right. I still think (despite Donaldson’s stellar defense) that his $25M was better spent elsewhere. I also believe IKF as our FT SS was not an answer. IKF should be in Marwin’s role.
Word from sources on social media is that Cashman is going to be renewed regardless of the postseason outcome, which was easy to see, because he’s ticked all Hal’s important boxes: playoff roster, close to CBT (back under after this season), and will remain under CBT at any cost, if directed.
But, that likely means the Booner is back as well, because somehow it seems he may manage to finagle his way into securing a spot as the longest-tenured Yankees manager in the history of the franchise.
CaptainJudge99
@Yankee Clipper- Is Ducky Fent alright? Please let me know and thanks.
Yankee Clipper
I honestly don’t know. My reference was from when he was posting on here in the offseason. I don’t have another way to contact him. I truly hope he’s okay and he’s just been really busy during the building season.
Poster formerly known as . . .
I thought Sanchez was undervalued by a lot of Yankee fans. I thought they didn’t give Gary enough credit for how he handled the pitching staff and they put too much emphasis on negligible stuff like passed balls. And now he’s a decent defender anyway, for the Twins.
I hope Ducky’s okay. Maybe he just got tired of posting for one reason or another.
Bright Side
Montgomery got smacked around by the Braves Saturday night. If not for Jansen doing his best Clay Holmes impersonation, the Cardinals would have dropped the first two games of the series.
Poster formerly known as . . .
And he still has a 1.76 ERA with the Cardinals including that game. How’s Schmidt doing as a starter? Not so good. And where’s Harrison Bader? In a walking boot.
whyhayzee
I think the Yankees might actually be figuring this thing out. They are finally throwing different starters out there. Maybe it’s because of injuries but if they thought they were getting to the postseason with a burned out shell of a rotation, they had to make an adjustment. Same with the bullpen. They’re snagging people off the wires and throwing them into games to save their reliable guys from also burning out like the rotation. But it’s hard to see who they can rely on in the postseason. I don’t think they have a lock down closer any more. And Cole is still going out and throwing 100+ pitches every start. It didn’t work last year but maybe he’ll be OK. I don’t know if anyone else in the rotation is reliable against a good lineup. I think they do have to worry about Tampa catching them, but it probably won’t happen. That would be devastating to their psyche. But stranger things have happened.

Is his driver’s license a Banda id?

Once again, Cashman is reminded why you shouldn’t trade for A’s pitchers.
