Aug. 10: The Tigers have announced Carpenter’s selection to reporters, including Woodbery, with righty Beau Brieske being transferred to the 60-day IL in a corresponding move. He will be ineligible to return until 60 days from his initial IL placement, which was due to forearm soreness on July 21. He could technically return in late September, though with the Tigers well out of contention, it seems possible that his season may be finished.
Aug. 9: The Tigers are bringing up corner outfield prospect Kerry Carpenter to make his major league debut, the team informed reporters (including Evan Woodbery of MLive.com). Daz Cameron is being optioned to Triple-A Toledo in a corresponding move. The club will need to clear a spot on the 40-man roster before tomorrow’s game to formally select Carpenter’s contract.
Carpenter, 25 next month, entered pro ball as a 19th-round draft choice back in 2019. The Virginia Tech product wasn’t regarded as a draft prospect of much note and lost his first full professional season to the pandemic cancelation of the minor leagues. He spent last year with Double-A Erie, hitting at a roughly league average level. Few would’ve anticipated he was on the verge of a breakout, but Carpenter has torn the cover off the ball in 2022.
The left-handed hitter started this season back in Erie. He played there through late June, blasting 22 home runs in 63 games. Carpenter’s strikeout and walk rates weren’t great, but his power output was so overwhelming the Tigers bumped him up to Toledo. He’s played 33 games with the Mud Hens and hit even better there than he had in Erie. Carpenter is hitting .342/.433/.667 through 134 Triple-A plate appearances, connecting on eight homers and 11 doubles with matching strikeout and walk rates (12.7% apiece).
Carpenter doesn’t offer much defensive value, so he’ll have to hit at an above-average level to be productive. Baseball America credited him with plus power in ranking him the #12 prospect in the Detroit system midseason, writing that he made some swing changes last offseason that appear to have paid off. He’d have been eligible for the Rule 5 draft if not added to the 40-man roster at the start of the offseason. As they turn their attention to 2023, the Tigers will get their first look at a player they hope can carve out a regular corner outfield role in the coming years.
It’s about time!
I couldn’t believe it when Daz was called up over him. Al is not only not a very sharp GM; he’s not a very smart human. Very slow to make needed changes if he makes them at all. Carpenter should have been brought up 6 weeks ago when the Tigers still had an outside chance for the playoffs. I’m not saying he would’ve made a big difference, but it would’ve been worth a try.
Anyway, Good for Kerry. I have a feeling he will be a good mlb hitter.
6 weeks ago, he was still in Erie and hadn’t even tasted AAA pitching. Glad he’s finally here. Can’t wait to see his debut.
Every day this year, I looked at the Erie box scores on MiLB, so I could keep asking, “When are they going to bring up Kerry Carpenter up to Toledo?” Then, looking at the Toledo box scores, asking, “When are they going to bring Kerry Carpenter up to the majors?”
Now what am I going to do? Watch more Tigers games? Talk about being careful what you wish for ….
Same here. Also watching that Nieporte for Erie. He’s blasted 27 so far.
Just another Phillies prospect let go of too soon. Great to see him having eventually landed on his feet.
Yeah, if Trader Dave Dombrowski can’t trade a prospect, he has zero use for them. Hopefully, Nieporte follows Carpenter’s path to the majors.
I honestly think prospects are way overrated. Keep being you Trader Dave.
He is a 28 year old still in AA. I don’t think he is going anywhere
You might ask, “When are they going to send Kerry Carpenter back to the minors?” 🙂
They’ll be saying that in two weeks
I think he led the minors in homers across all leagues. Hard to tell for me, but I’m thinking so. MiLB only tracks homers by leagues. They don’t combine them.
Let him play every game the rest of the season and see what these got. Tigers have nothing to lose and may end up with a diamond in the rough. Believe it will be Daz who is DFA’d off the 40 man roster tomorrow
It doesn’t look like they’ve transferred Faedo to the 60-day yet and since he’s done for the season, that’s how I’m thinking we’ll create the spot.
The Tigers might refrain from transferring Faedo to the 60-day IL, because Faedo would be deemed a major-leaguer then, earning more money and accruing service time. My money is on Short or Davis getting DFA’d.
Gruß,
BSHH
That’s a good point BSHH. Davis will hopefully be cut over short.
Pineda to 60 day
Faedo is a major leaguer. Moving him to the 60 rather than the 15 day doesn’t change that.
Faedo accrues service time while on the IL either way.
I thought Faedo was on the minor league IR. So it would make a difference to put him on 60 day
They have a few older retread pitchers at Toledo that will get the DFA. It won’t be Cameron. Avila is very loyal to the player he drafts or receives back in trades. AKA Zac Short.

They have cleared out most of the retread pitchers. It has to Zac Short. Maybe they need him to p,any ss in Toledo & don’t want to lose him? Can’t think of any other reason he is still on 40 man. If they bring Norris up to pitch on Friday, another spot will need to be cleared. Maybe Sanchez the catcher, they expect Rodgers back at some time this year
Maybe they’ll cut Schoop a little early.
Finally.
Bout dang time Al!
Though w Meadows Haase and Carpenter, they are cornering the “really shouldn’t be playing corner OF but Miggy can do whatever he wants and clog up DH until 24” market…
Seeing 12 innings of shut out ball with N.Y. an Seattle, we’ll all be glad to see shifting end. Detroit has amassed more left handed hitters than ever before. It’ll be interesting to see how it all plays out next year. MLB is the wild card, will they mess with the baseballs again ? The humidors ? Who knows, but losing the shift will make baseball more fun, more runners.
I agree with you that banning the shift will open up the offenses. But I do not like having rules where fielders need to be standing at. If a team wants to put 7 fielders in right field, let them. It should be up to the batters to adjust, and be better hitters.
I was trying to add him in my 16 team espn league and he’s not even add to player field lol
Chris Carpenter’s son.
Really wish they would’ve optioned Baddoo instead of Cameron. Baddoo has been horrendous at the plate and in the field this year. Nothing but strikeouts and terrible throws. Can’t even hit the cut off man.
I agree. But Baddoo will likely go back down when Meadows returns.
Absolutely nothing to lose, to see what he’s got….
Oh, how we love them Hens!
About time….if he flames out so be it…but he has lit it up in the minors this year, give him the rest of the year to see if he can produce at the big league level before the start of next year
About time, Avila is slow on the up take besides making bad trades, time to start eliminating some even that they stick out there every day and Avila can go too, aka 7 year and a very baddd rebuild, cut him away as GM. Get Epstein.

Al Avila was just fired. Maybe he wasn’t supposed to call up Kerry Carpenter.
Oh good. Another DH.
At least if he hits and if his defense doesn’t cost runs. Maybe he’ll be an unexpected good from this season.
