The Tigers and Phillies announced a minor league trade, with left-hander Ricardo Sanchez heading to Detroit in exchange for cash considerations. Because Sanchez has played the entire season on a minor league contract without spending any time on Philadelphia’s big league roster or big league injured list, he was eligible to be dealt after the August 2 trade deadline.
[Related: How to Acquire Players after the Trade Deadline]
Sanchez has been assigned to Triple-A, but given how injuries have ravaged the Tigers’ pitching staff to an almost absurd extent, it might not be long before Sanchez gets his second crack in the big leagues. Sanchez made his MLB debut in 2020, throwing 5 1/3 innings over three games with the Cardinals. The southpaw remained in the St. Louis organization until this past March, when he was released and then quickly pivoted to a new minors deal with Philadelphia.
Injuries kept Sanchez off the mound entirely in 2021, but he returned to post a 4.79 ERA over 92 innings with the Phillies’ Triple-A affiliate. Never a big strikeout pitcher during his eight seasons in the pros, Sanchez is inducing grounders roughly half the time, but a .337 BABIP hasn’t helped Sanchez keep runs off the board.
Originally signed as an international free agent by the Angels in 2013, Sanchez will now head to his sixth different Major League organization. Sanchez is only 25, so it’s perhaps inaccurate to say that the Tigers only view him as a shorter-term option, but Detroit is likely just looking for all of the depth it can find given the team’s lack of healthy arms.

just cash? ugh.

Dave Cash was my neighbor in a Philly suburb back in the late 70s when I was a kid. He donated a baseball signed by the team (Mike Schmidt/Steve Carlton, etc) to my sister’s elementary school and I spent my allowance buying 10 cent tickets — and won! This was back in the day when baseball players lived in middle class neighborhoods.

I used to run into Frank Viola, his sister and his family back when I was growing up in Longwood FL. I remember the whole family had relocated there because back in the day the Twins used to have their spring training at Tinker Field in Orlando.
Frank and the entire family were perhaps the most normal friendliest group of people I’ve ever met. They restored my faith in humanity. I couldn’t believe how humble and normal he was.
I used to bag his groceries and would answer atin if questions about all the hitters he would face and every other facet of the game. He was never in a rush to talk to me. A few years later he signed with the Mets, but I guarantee if you would ask him about his time at Publix he would remember.
His family were the salt of the earth. I always rooted for Frankie “Sweet Music” Viola
He actually lived in a middle class neighborhood in Florida.
P. S. ANYBODY miss Chris Berman doing MLB highlights on ESPN? I have a collection of all of his nicknames for different players. His enthusiasm doing the highlights used to pump up me and my buddies.

I dont miss Bermans nicknames. But he did generate interest during a great time for mlbs resurgence, with more young fans, baseball card speculation.

So next they’re gonna acquire Mortimer Smith, right?

I am wondering if this guy can double as a hitting coach?? I can’t even watch this team at the plate. It is a joke watching strikes go past, swinging and missing at pitches off the plate and then the fact they have no ability to drive in runs or hit home runs. Hinch I like but firing both Coolbaugh and Hessman needs to be done and I wouldn’t even wait until the season is over. They ruined Torkelson and are in the process of ruining Greene and don’t even tell me about Baez. and Schoop is a damn disaster. Worst HR and BA percentage in MLB and yet they are still employed.
stymeedone
The team did solid under these same coaches last year, but that the only player that has recovered from their bad start is Haase, shows their inability to correct when things aren’t going well. They will be gone the day the season ends.

I would love to see Roger Clemens come out of retirement to play alongside his son. Crazier things have happened in baseball lore. He could donate his salary to charity minus meals, travel and lodging expenses. Detroit could make some money and get enough publicity to put some fannies in stands Would that reset his hall of fame voting clock for an additional 10 years? I wonder if Charlie Finley had ever thought about doing something similar to that.

Minnie Minosa played in 5 decades. The Griffey were the only father son the play together on the same team.

Finally! The acquisition to propel the Tigers to the division!

Probably just minor league depth because the Tigers have raided the cupboards in Toledo.

The worst three teams in MLB have good bullpens: DET, WSN, OAK. Odd.

Not sure WSH has that good of a BP.

The Nats entire team is racked with injury but with their worst record in MLB, I would expect a pen like the Reds have. The Nats pen is decent.

Now the Tigers are literally buying other team’s minor leaguer’s with nearly 5.00 ERA’s to supplement their depleted. pitching. Ugh
