The Pirates announced that they have selected the contract of left-hander Cam Vieaux. Righty Yohan Ramirez was optioned to make room on the active roster. To open a spot on the 40-man, catcher Jose Godoy was designated for assignment.
This will be the second time that Vieaux, 28, has been selected to the Pirates’ roster. They first called him up in June, letting him make five appearances. The first four went pretty well, with the southpaw only allowing a single earned run in that time. In his fifth outing, however, the Bucs sent him in to pitch the top of the eighth in a game they were losing to the Brewers 9-1. Despite Vieaux getting hit around badly, there was no help forthcoming to get out of the inning. The lefty ended up tossing 56 pitches in that one frame, allowing six hits, three walks and eight runs, seven of them earned. As a result, he has a 14.40 ERA through five innings this year.
As a reward for eating that inning, Vieaux was optioned to the minors and designated for assignment in the following days. He cleared waivers and was outrighted, sticking in the Pirates’ system. In 42 Triple-A innings this year, he has an even 3.00 ERA, with a 23.3% strikeout rate, 8.8% walk rate and 43.1% ground ball rate.
As for Godoy, 27, he’s surely racked up his share of frequent flyer miles this year. He began 2022 in the Mariners organization but was claimed off waivers by the Giants in March, who promptly lost him to the Twins on another waiver claim. He stuck with Minnesota until August, at which point he went to Pittsburgh on yet another trip to the waiver wire. He’s spent most of his time in the minors this year, getting into 44 Triple-A games and hitting .201/.272/.299 in that time.
Since the trade deadline has passed, the Pirates will have no choice but to put Godoy on outright waivers or release waivers in the coming days. If Godoy doesn’t get claimed for a fourth time this year, he can reject an outright assignment and elect free agency, by virtue of having been previously outrighted in his career. This leaves the Pirates with Jason Delay and Tyler Heineman as the only catchers on their 40-man roster.

Good day Godoy.

Glad that Vieaux is getting another look.
Mendoza Line 215
I hope that they give Vieux and extended look to see if he can pitch.
Maybe Stout cannot.
Who is the Pirates emergency catcher?
You guessed it- Josh Van Meter!
I do hope that they finally give Davis a chance if they lose another catcher.

I still can’t understand Shelton’s actions—or lack thereof—in Vieaux’s last game here against the Brewers. He was essentially a sacrificial lamb and made to withstand an onslaught without anyone getting up in the pen
The next inning, he brings in his boy, VanMeter
We talk a great deal about playing the kids and the hopes management doesn’t muck it up
This was a classic example of destroying a rookie pitcher
Defied all logic
Hope he bounces back this time
Mendoza Line 215
Vieaux was not destroyed as he has come back up.
The inflated era may have helped them keep him once he was dfa’ed.
Shelton has a penchant for pitching Van Meter, and Vieux said that he appreciated not being pulled mid inning for a position player.
tiredolddude
But Mendoza, what would you expect him to say? Can’t say I’ve ever seen a manager allow that for a pitcher at any level, that’s all
Mendoza Line 215
I take him at his word and it makes sense to me.
What does not make sense is Shelton’s penchant for pitching Van Meter in the first place. They have enough pitchers that they could have brought someone else in for Vieux and not subject him to the onslaught.Shelton does not seem to always know when to pull pitchers. It is generally fairly obvious.
TheMan 3
Is there another 3rd baseman in the minors that could take Padlo’s place on the parent club?
Another failed dumpster dive conducted by our cheapest management
Van Meter hasn’t played in the last 3 games, he’s taking up a roster sport that a prospect could be using
Mendoza Line 215
Padlo helps them out at first and third as a warm body and is the equivalent in my mind of Yu Chang.
The Pirates are bad enough that they need this type of player for short periods to fill in the gaps.
At least they have not been relying on lifetime AAA pitchers this year as depth.
But the year is not over.
TheMan 3
What kind of player is that?
One that doesn’t hit with any consistency? He’s still looking for his first hit as a Buc.
Mendoza Line 215
Not sure who you are talking about but if it is Padlo you will be happy to learn that he got his first hit as a Buc today.
BC did not cover first base and catcher this year which is on him. That is the reason why they occasionally needed someone like Padlo, and probably the reason that they are keeping VM since Shelton evidently thinks that he can play anywhere.
Padlo will not be around very long as they have Chavis to back up Hayes and your and Shelton’s favorite player Van Meter to back up Chavis at first.

Where is Oviedo, suwinsky and Castillo???
Mendoza Line 215
Castillo is hitting 269 and needs the time in AAA.
Suwinski is striking out over 40% of the time in AAA as he had been doing in the ML.
Oviedo should be up soon.
Where is Bae?
At this point bring Martin up and show him what the ML is like.
TheMan 3
Bae and Martin would interfere with Van Meter’s MVP season
Mendoza Line 215
It is truly amazing to me as it is to you as to how he has lasted this long unless they think that he can play anywhere.

Godoy had the worst swing I’ve ever seen in any baseball game at any level. Against the Orioles on August 7th. He almost falls over on a curve ball and stumbles up the third base line (as a left handed hitter) and he thinks he fouled it off but it pops up to 3rd baseman. If you have the MLB app it’s minute 37:55 of the game on August 7th. It’s worth the time searching to find it. It should’ve gone viral and he should’ve been released immediately.
Mendoza Line 215
What I saw amazing is why did BC get him in the first place when he had just brought up Taylor Davis to give a Pirate minor leaguer a chance.I could understand if Godoy was a young player with promise but he certainly was not. This is just one of many second half moves or lack thereof that have befuddled me about BC.
