A couple updates on some recent DFAs to kick off the morning…
- Infielder Kevin Padlo cleared outright waivers and was assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis, the Pirates announced Monday. He has neither a prior outright assignment nor three years of Major League service time, so he won’t have the option of rejecting the assignment. The 26-year-old corner infielder was hitless in 11 plate appearances with the Bucs this year and carries a dismal .109/.163/.152 slash in the Majors on the whole — although that’s come in a tiny sample of just 49 plate appearances. Padlo is a .251/.336/.484 hitter at the Triple-A level (836 plate appearances) and ranked among the top 25 prospects of the Rockies, Rays and Mariners over the past five offseasons, per Baseball America.
- Twins infielder Tim Beckham went unclaimed on waivers and was assigned outright to Triple-A, per the team’s transactions log at MLB.com. Beckham went just 2-for-25 in his limited time with Minnesota but has posted a comical .413/.483/.579 slash with five homers and six doubles in 143 trips to the plate with Triple-A St. Paul so far in 2022. Beckham, who carries a .247/.299/.426 slash in 1776 Major League plate appearances with four different teams, has played all four infield positions in the minors this season and also logged four games in left field with the big league club. He has more than five years of big league service, which would allow him to reject this assignment and look for another opportunity if he desires.

Now DFA van meter, gamel,Underwood and Newman and fire shelton
TheMan 3
Gamel at least will drive in runs with runners in scoring position, and Newman at times leads off the first with a hit. Especially against left handed pitchers. Cruz can’t hit lefties
Come to think about it, Hayes has been an offensive disappointment
But I completely agree about Van Meter while sending Madris to the minors in favor of keeping Van Meter is a head scratching decision
In addition, Crowe can’t be trusted anymore to preserve a lead
6 blown save opportunities and 7 losses in relief, why not try DeJong?
Aren’t rosters being expanded on the 1st?
Buuba ho tep
Yes rosters expand September first….but who knows who or when they will call up…head scratcher on recent moves.
Time play nothing but rookies the rest of the way….one month to prove their abilities
pirateking24
Don’t forget Crowe.
Skeptical
Newman, really? Of the Pirate starters, he has the highest batting average (.276). In the last thirty games, he is batting .285. For the season, has a 0.7 WAR, third best OBP among players on Pirates active roster (Gamel is second) and sixth best SLG. All of his numbers are trending upward since returning from the IL. What did he do to you?
Underwood? DFA him from this staff? He has a better ERA than the bulk of the staff.
I would be hesitant to DFA any pitcher as long as Shelton is manager. I think he misuses the pitchers. Look at Beede, not a great pitcher by any stretch of the imagination, but a serviceable relief pitcher. So, how does Shelton use him? Starter, where he gets shelled repeatedly. Maybe since Shelton was a hitting coach at one time, he hates pitchers.
I agree that Van Meter should go, but at least Shelton is trotting him out every day lately.
TheMan 3
Beede shouldn’t be starting and Crowe shouldn’t be pitching in late innings
Shelton misuses his pitching staff while his lineups are completely out of step with the talent on the team
Reynolds, the team’s biggest power threat should be batting 3rd, Hayes who strikes out far too much, should bat 5th. Against righties Cruz bats first, against lefties Newman bats 1st
Buuba ho tep
Yes Newman..he’s taking at bats from rookies who need to be analyzed the lady month..this includes Gamel
TheMan 3
Which rookie is Newman taking ABs from?
Skeptical
Maybe the Angels should DFA Ohtani as he is taking ABs from rookies who need evaluated. Sorry, but your argument is not much of a logical argument.
Buuba ho tep
Branch Rickey said , we lose games with you, we can lose games without you, before he traded Ralph kiner. So what does Newman do for the pirates? If he was of any value, I think a contender would have traded for him.
TheMan 3
Using your logic why didn’t they trade Reynolds and Hayes?
The Pirates are losing with them in the lineups
Buuba ho tep
Because Reynolds and Hayes are building blocks.. Newman is well ..hello Jerry
bucsfan0004
Ok, so some Yinzer on here doesn’t like Newman. Get over it. He’s the best fielder on the team, which you need when you have a pitching staff that is beyond awful, and he gives quality at bats vs lefty pitchers. If he was on a good team, he’d be platooning and buried at the bottom of the lineup.

Beckham was the first pick of the 2008 draft. By the Rays, who are very good evaluators of talent. Showed early promise, had a few streaks, solid season in 2017, but net net, you would have expected a lot more from a top pick.
LordD99
The Rays historically are great at pro scouting, meaning identifying talent in other organizations. I’ve been less impressed by their drafting. Not saying they’re bad, but that really hasn’t been their core strength.
Mikenmn
Fair point. That draft was interesting
Tim Beckham, Pedro Alvarez, Hosmer, Brian Matusz, Posey, Kyle Skipworth, Yonder Alonso, Gordon Beckham, Aaron Crow and Jason Castro
TheMan 3
The Rays historically have a great track record on both drafts and player development
Moonlight Grahamcracker
Agreed 100%. Look at their drafts from 2008-present, lots of misses on 1st round picks. Remember in 2011 when they received all this hype for having 10 1st round picks, they whiffed big time on all of them but Snell.
Old York
Padlo seems like he should be a AA-All-Star. That slash line in AAA is not great.
ohyeadam
Tale of two cities for Beckham. Obviously better than AAA but can’t keep it together in the majors
refereemn77
The classic “Quad A” type of player.
joew
Pirates need to call up Mason Martin soon. He’s rebounded nicely except for not going for power.
If I had to to guess the coaches and him worked on changing his approach instead of selling out for power and now it is working. In august he is drawing walks and just getting on base with a .312 avg and 827 OPS. BUT no home runs during that time which was/is his bread and butter. I think that will come though.

Van meter is DH in tonight’s game…what an idiot Shelton is..he needs fired
