The Phillies announced Thursday that they’ve claimed outfielder Bradley Zimmer off waivers from the Blue Jays. He’ll take the active roster spot of center fielder Brandon Marsh, who’s headed to the 10-day injured list due to a sprained left ankle. Bryce Harper was transferred to the 60-day injured list to open a spot on the 40-man roster.
Zimmer, a former first-round pick and top prospect in Cleveland, was traded to the Jays on Opening Day and held a roster spot throughout the season due to his glovework and baserunning prowess. He’s posted a disastrous .105/.209/.237 batting line on the season, but that’s come in a minuscule sample of 87 plate appearances spread across 77 games.
Zimmer has never been a great hitter in the Majors, but he came into the 2022 season as a .225/.310/.347 hitter, so it’s fair to wonder whether he might’ve fared a bit better at the plate had he been given more than five to six plate appearances per week. At the time of his DFA, Zimmer had played in 22 games and received just 14 plate appearances over a span of more than six weeks.
At least in the short term, the Phils could have more at-bats to give Zimmer. He’ll give them a plus defender to slot in between lumbering sluggers Kyle Schwarber and Nick Castellanos in the outfield, providing some needed range to help offset the defensive deficiencies the Phillies face in the corners.
Marsh, acquired in a deadline deal sending top catching prospect Logan O’Hoppe to the Angels, hit .250/.294/.313 in 34 plate appearances with the Phillies before sustaining his current injury on a play at the center field wall. Like Zimmer, he’s a plus defender in center, though Marsh is also a recent second-round pick and top prospect whom the Phils hope can be their everyday option in center for the foreseeable future. It seems likely that once Marsh returns, Zimmer could again be squeezed off the roster, although with rosters expanding to 28 in September, perhaps the Phils will hang onto Zimmer to give them a second plus glove in the outfield as a late-game replacement.
Harper’s move to the 60-day injured list is procedural and does not reset his timeline for a return. The “60-day” term on the 60-day IL is retroactive to whenever a player was first placed on the IL, and Harper has been aiming for a September return anyway. In other words, it’s a technicality that is not reflective of any snags in his rehab or any setbacks. He’s been working to mend a broken thumb sustained when he was plunked by an errant Blake Snell fastball. Harper also has a tear in the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, which has limited him to DH work due to an inability to throw from right field. That’ll likely remain his role once he returns next month.
Injuries piling up at the wrong time.
Zimmer can’t hit, plain and simple. He doesn’t slug and his career OBP is right around .300. He’s not going to be much help.
That said, much like the ChiSox signing Andrus, when you are in a pennant race I guess teams prefer to have a veteran than a rookie up the middle.
They needed a plus defender in CF while Marsh is out. Schwarber will DH starting this Friday. They did not get him to hit. Vierling will play left and spell Castellanos in right a few times
They just need able bodies to catch balls. Marsh can’t hit either.
With the defense they are getting from the OF corners I’m surprised they didn’t pick up Billy Hamilton hoping his speed would let him play a huge CF. What they were thinking relying on those 2 for defense shows the Phillies are stuck in the old way of roster construction. They should have been all over Joey Gallo at the deadline. He was a natural fit for this team.
@thecoffinnail Just to clarify here: The Phillies never planned to have Schwarber and Castellanos play the outfield at the same time. They were hosed with injuries. Harper was supposed to play RF with one of Schwarber/Castellanos DHing. Harper’s injuries forced him to DH. At the deadline they traded for a legit CF and for the first time in a long while the Phillies OF situation looked real solid, but unfortunately Marsh got hurt. Along with the already injured Harper and Schwarber, the OF depth took a nosedive. Not to mention that the best ML option also got injured around the same time. Essentially, they lost 4 OFs to injury. Not an excuse. Just a fact. They’re still skating by.
I think signing anyone and thinking you’re going to need to DH them like 50% of the time goes against what every good gm preaches against. It crushes your roster flexibility and you should assume someone on your team is going to get injured and have to DH a majority of the time especially if you sign someone a bit older ala George Springer. DH spot needs to be a spot you rest guys not occupied by a fat loaf who can’t field
They were thinking that Harper is injured.
Fascinating that both Zimmer and Clint Frazier, the top outfiedling prospects in Cleveland’s system a few years ago, both failed in their big league careers.
It’s pretty common. Most big prospects fail.
So both Marsh and Moniak are now on the IL? At least the trade has been fair

Rather self-indulgent comment, painter.

Is Matt migrating over here from the FanGraphs chats?
They were part of two separate trades
True but you can basically swap them 1 for 1 because Syndergaard for Moniak will never be fair
Zimmer is a 5th outfielder. A good pinch runner and defensive replacement late in the game. He’ll be DFA’d again when Marsh comes back.
Any port in a storm I guess. Phillies fans will LOVE Zimmer as long as you can keep him away from the plate. As a CLE fan who endured his years there and watched him get even worse in TOR, PHI will be best served to DH for him and not the pitcher for best results.
Maybe not get DFA’d…rosters expand in Sept.
there had to be SOMEONE in the minors who is better then Bradley… like just give someone a chance
I guess this is until Harper is back but still…EW WHY?!
I would guess this is more of a CF glove thing. Moniak/Haseley are no longer an option, Either the free and clear Zimmer, who you wouldn’t hesitate to release at the end of his stint, or sitting Simon Muzziotti on the ML bench and not getting enough playing time. This is a 13th man on the bench scenario. Not thrilled with him, but hopefully meaningless in the long run.
Muzziotti got injured last weekend and is done for the season.
They’d happily be using Muzziotti, but he’s out for the season due to injury.
ffs dude can’t catch a break.
Vierling is fine enough there. I’d rather see Guthrie promoted.
first oscar mercado (briefly) now zimmer? why do they like these cleveland castoffs?
DDs crew has good judgement but I’m not on board with this sign.
Thank God he’s gone from Toronto!
I just can’t believe it took them as long as it did to DFA him. Zimmer couldn’t hit water if he fell out of a boat.
I think it was just a lack of center field options. Springer was ailing, as he often is and Lourdes and Teo aren’t great defensive options. Picking Merrifield and Bradley Jr. made him expendable. Of course neither has really been that much better than Zimmer but what can you do.
Everyone brags about the Indians aka Woks farm system and scouting, but Zimmer and Clint Fraizer were #1 picks in consecutive years.
Zimmer’s problem with the Indians was injuries. Let’s see what, he does with some AB’s and a little regular playing time. time..
I think Johan Rojas might be the CF one day but he’s a way off. The Phillies farm is hard to read.
Justin Crawford has entered the chat……
I think they will give Zimmer some opportunities for sure and I also don’t think he’ll be an immediate cast-off. Two of the three players meeting this statcast criteria are now Phillies. The other is Byron Buxton.

Jimmy Kerrigan of the Kane County Cougars is a better option. baseball.pointstreak.com/player.html?playerid=1583…
and yet, Zimmer is in the lineup tonight..The Mets are shaking in their booties
