Updates on a couple of players that were recently designated for assignment…
- The Braves announced that outfielder Travis Demeritte has been outrighted to Triple-A Gwinnett. The 27-year-old had been designated for assignment earlier in the week. Originally drafted by the Rangers, Demeritte was traded to Atlanta in 2016 and then traded to Detroit in 2019. He made his MLB debut with the Tigers before coming back to the Braves on a waiver claim last year. Atlanta passed him through waivers in February of last year, keeping him in the minors all season, but then selecting him to the 40-man roster in November to prevent him reaching minor league free agency. He’s played 26 big league games this year, hitting .213/.260/.337, while hitting .207/.291/.357 in 38 Triple-A games. Because he had been previously outrighted in his career, Demeritte has the right to reject this assignment, though it’s not yet clear whether he’s decided to exercise that right or not.
- Outfielder Steele Walker, who was designated for assignment by the Giants earlier this week, cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Sacramento, tweets Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. Walker, 26, was originally drafted by the White Sox but was flipped to the Rangers for Nomar Mazara in 2019. Texas selected him to the roster in June but gave him the DFA treatment a couple of weeks ago. The Giants claimed him and quickly DFA’d him again, with Walker clearing waivers this time. He only got into five MLB games while with the Rangers, spending most of the season in Triple-A. In 55 games between the Round Rock Express and Sacramento River Cats, he’s hit .268/.345/.431, striking out just 17% of the time. Since this is his first career outright and he has less than three years of MLB service time, he is ineligible to reject the assignment. He’ll stick with the River Cats and serve as depth for the Giants, but without occupying a spot on the club’s 40-man roster.

Duvall Gone? Check.
Ozuna Gone? Check?
LF will be a very interesting offseason watch for the Braves.

I would not complain if they go for Nimmo
LosBravos2021
Yeah he’s a great player, but I don’t think the Braves would offer him something enticing. He hasn’t had his big payday yet, and he’s a Boras client. If they go after max money, Braves will get outbid by a lot of teams.
TradeAcuna
I don’t believe the bidding for Nimmo will go beyond what the Braves are comfortable with given his injury history + his numbers are not earth-shattering. Of course I’m not suggesting I want the Braves overpay either. Like Grissom, the Braves need a guy who is patient hitting on top. Sadly, the Braves will probably stick with Acuna on top regardless.
Jean Matrac
I think you’re underestimating the CF market. There’s a shortage, and Nimmo is probably the best of what’s out there. I agree with @LosBravos. Don’t see the braves outbidding some of the other teams that have interest.
TradeAcuna
I believe fans overestimate the market just like they always overestimate trade value. Neither of us know what the market will be for Nimmo nor what he will be commanding. Regardless, unless they move Grissom to left, this team needs an outfielder, badly.
Jean Matrac
First of all, need is irrelevant. I see it all the time, that team X will sign player X because they have a need. There are too many other factors that override need.
Trade value and market value are two completely different things. I agree, fans do overestimate trade value, but I think they underestimate the market value, especially when that involves a premier position that’s short of a lot of talent, with multiple teams looking to upgrade.
So it isn’t really that hard to anticipate what the market for CF will be. When you have big market teams, with big budgets, like the NYYs, who apparently aren’t content with Hicks, and the Dodgers, who might non-tender Bellinger, both looking to upgrade CF, as well as the Mets wanting to retain Nimmo, you know he’s going to get paid. Probably more than the Braves are willing to spend.

Yeah Ronald leading off games this year is hitting .324 with a .383 OBP and a 883 OPS. Leading off innings he’s hitting .291, .376 OBP and an .846 OPS. That guy is a horrible lead off hitter, huh? It’s amazing with all the info online you just say things without looking up stats to at least kinda sound like you know what you’re talking about.
TradeAcuna
Yes, Acuna is putrid from the lead-off spot…just terrible.
BTW, show me when I said he was “horrible”?
Acuna is better off hitting in the middle of the lineup because of his run producing potential. I think the Braves can do better from the leadoff spot – someone who doesn’t strike out often and hacks away for homeruns. The current lineup is fine the way it is, but I brought up the lead-off spot because I mentioned Nimmo as a target, whom I believe if he does become a Brave, I would like to have him hitting first. Doubt the Braves will do that though even if they sign Nimmo.

No chance the Braves target Nimmo. They don’t employ Boras clients. The last two in the organization were dealt this season—-Touki and Langeliers.

The only talent a Steele Walker can give is keeping the elderly somewhat mobile.

Steele Walker > PVC Walker > Aluminum Walker

Some poor deluded fan was outraged that Zaidi DFA’d Walker., thereby crushing his hope, and uprooting his family. That fan thought FZ should be fired for playing with people’s lives.
Turns out Walker is staying where he was in Sacramento, not having his soul crushed, and not uprooting anybody. False alarm I guess.

Steele Walker….I sincerely believe that the Rangers asked for this guy in the Mazara trade because his name sounded like a guy who might ride his horse to the ballpark. The Rangers fanbase laps that up. The Rangers fans still believe Eli White is a future all star.
