As is the case at every trade deadline, there’s a flurry of activity on deadline day. The most high-profile of the moves are the trades themselves, but the aftermath of that activity often results in a shuffle of minor moves of their own. Plenty of clubs have had to fill or create roster spots depending on the deals they’ve made in the last 24 hours. We’ll round up 40-man roster transactions not previously covered on the MLBTR pages here:
AL East
- Yankees: Reinstated catcher Ben Rortvedt from 60-day injured list
- Blue Jays: Designated left-hander Anthony Banda for assignment; lost left-hander Andrew Vasquez on waivers to Phillies
AL Central
- Tigers: Reinstated right-hander Matt Manning from 60-day injured list
- White Sox: Claimed right-hander Tobias Myers off waivers from Giants
AL West
- Angels: Selected the contract of infielder Jose Rojas; designated infielder David MacKinnon for assignment
- Mariners: Designated first baseman Jack Larsen for assignment; released left-hander Tommy Milone
- Astros: Transferred catcher Jason Castro to 60-day injured list
NL East
- Nationals: Designated left-hander Josh Rogers for assignment; transferred left-hander Evan Lee to 60-day injured list. Selected the contract of first baseman Joey Meneses
- Marlins: Reinstated right-hander Anthony Bender from 60-day injured list
- Phillies: Claimed left-hander Andrew Vasquez off waivers from Blue Jays
NL Central
- Cubs: Claimed right-hander Kervin Castro off waivers from Giants
- Brewers: Designated right-hander Luke Barker for assignment
NL West
Giants: Lost right-hander Tobias Myers on waivers to White Sox; lost right-hander Kervin Castro on waivers to Cubs
Holy Cow!
Kervin, woo.

Yeah surprised when Giants put him on waivers. Just last season they were talking about him making the rotation this year. But the walks kill him.

Wouldn’t mind seeing the Pirates claiming David MacKinnon and designating Yoshi.

What an absolute crapper of a deadline for the White Sox. Division within reach, hovering around 500 and they barely do anything to try and boost the team. Minimal activity at best. Guess they really are determined to be mired in mediocrity. Time for Reinsdorf to sell, then we get Tony out of there and maybe a new group will actually give a damn.

Tony will be the manager until he’s 85

The White Sox have a heart issue. While I think they should have moved someone.. maybe that would have wake up this team, explain what acquisition would have helped? Would they have helped with Anderson making three errors tonight? (Sorry official scorer, they were errors). Would they help with Anderson’s (and others in this lineup) inability to drive runners in from third with less than two outs? Would it help keep Moncada (and others) healthy? Would it help Giolito be the pitcher that superfans think he is? Would it help with the godawful baserunning on this club? Hahn was smart to stand pat (well got a reliever anyway). Put it on the shoulders of these guys who are under peforming-to put it nicely (the term Frank Thomas used tonight in the pre-game show by the way), and see the manager and coaches hold players accountable, regardless of hurt feelings (essentially Ozzie’s words). I think Hahn sees that if the team is motivated, it should be able to win this division, and put it on their shoulders. Weather the storm until the off season and fix a lot of this then, and you do not have to burn through what little talent is in their minor league system to do it. Thats what is frustrating about this club. If these guys consistently played at the level they show occasionally they should win this division hands down, but they do not and that (at least partially) falls on the guy (LaRussa) who was a great manager…. 10 years ago.

Mike Ford placed on 10-day injured list by the Braves retroactive to 7/31.

That stove was getting so hot there for a while I thought it was going to cause a flue fire!

Cool to see Joey finally get a shot.

Sad day for a lot of players the next couple of days. Some very good players may be sent down or DFA because of the trades. The Brewers still need to move about 3 more pitchers off the Roaster quickly!

Hopefully Meneses takes full advantage of this chance.
Good Luck Joey!

@Anthony Franco,
Wouldn’t mind seeing this type of article on daily basis.

Hey Tigers fans. Tough year for you guys. So many bad breaks. Considering your record, is it a surprise to see Manning back and in a starters role? Too soon? I mean it’s a shoulder. Shut him down and, if anything, have him throw simulated games for the remainder of season?

I guess MacKinnon was DFA when his look alike Syndegaard was dealt. I wouldn’t mind having him in AAA with the Stros. Seemed like an okay player who plays hard.
