The Yankees were known to be targeting Pablo Lopez prior to the trade deadline, and reports suggested that Gleyber Torres was involved in the talks between New York and Miami. One trade proposed by the Marlins would’ve seen Lopez and Miguel Rojas head to the Bronx in exchange for Torres and infield prospect Oswald Peraza, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports, but the Yankees rejected the offer.
Anthony Volpe is considered one of the top prospects in all of baseball, so while Peraza is a top-100 staple in his own right, he could’ve been more of an expendable piece in trade talks. New York was still resistant to moving Peraza, and while the club was reportedly open to moving him in a possible Frankie Montas trade, the Yankees ended up landing Montas from the Athletics for another trade package that didn’t involve Peraza. The inclusion of longtime Miami staple Rojas is an interesting wrinkle, as presumably the Marlins offered Rojas as a replacement for Torres in the Yankees’ infield mix, and perhaps sought to give the veteran a chance at winning a ring with a contender. It makes for an interesting deadline what-if, and any of these players could potentially be part of different trade talks should the two teams rekindle negotiations this winter.
Some rumblings from the Marlins and Rays, as we check in on both Sunshine State teams…
- After some fielding drills and batting practice on Wednesday, Wander Franco told reporters (including Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times) that “I feel super good right now and [am] getting better,” in regards to his injured right hand. Soreness in that hand led Franco to be taken off his rehab assignment earlier this week, and the Rays will continue to monitor Franco’s injury before deciding when to restart his minor league work. Speaking with Topkin and company today, Rays manager Kevin Cash said Saturday would be the earliest date for Franco to resume his rehab assignment. Franco has played in only 58 games this season due to a quad strain and then hamate-bone surgery, and his return would be a big boost to a Rays club that is trying to secure a wild card berth.
- In other Rays injury updates from Topkin, Josh Fleming and Matt Wisler each started minor league rehab assignments within the last two days, while J.P. Feyereisen will throw a live batting practice session before the team decides on his rehab assignment. This is a good development for Feyereisen, who had a brief setback due to shoulder soreness earlier this month. Shane Baz also told Topkin and other reporters that he’ll start a throwing program on Monday, but it remains to be seen if Baz can get fully ramped up in time to return to big league game action before the season is over. An elbow sprain sent Baz to the 15-day IL and then the 60-day IL retroactive to July 14, so it will still be a few weeks before he is even eligible to be activated.
- Garrett Cooper is two games into a minor league rehab assignment and could be back on the Marlins’ active roster as soon as Friday. Manager Don Mattingly told reporters that Cooper was slated to play three games as part of his recovery from a stint on the seven-day concussion IL, and Cooper is no longer experiencing any symptoms. Cooper’s IL placement was retroactive to August 17, and it doesn’t look like he’ll miss much more time beyond the seven-day minimum.

If this story is true the Yankees were wise to pass on López, Wendle and Rojas. Peraza and Torres was way too much to give up in a package. Trading Monty has turned into a disaster though. It might cost Mr. Cashman his job next season.
BuffaloBrad716312
I don’t think there is a world where Cashman leaves without it being on his own accord. That may be a mutual thing, but there are very few president of baseball ops out there that could and would take over this job.
Neon Cop
Where is Jorge Soler?
MarlinsFanBase
Injured.
Neon Cop
For how long, though? Haven’t seen any updates.
MarlinsFanBase
Honestly not sure. The Marlins seem to be so focused on playing their young players that it’s like Soler is a forgotten man.
CaptainJudge99
I wouldn’t be shocked to see Gleyber, Hicks, Gomez, and Andujar traded next season for López. Not expecting Taillon back next year.
DodgerNation
Y’all Yankee fans are just making things up now that trade makes absolutely no sense for the Marlins. Where do they get any value from that??
pinstripes17
Lopez isn’t good, if the Marlins are smart they’ll sell high.
Stark
Lopez is slightly better and cheaper than Montas. The only area Montas has over him is a small edge in K%. Lopez is more of a ground ball pitcher too and would have been a better fit. Instead we have what we have in Montas and lost Monty.
CaptainJudge99
@pinstripes17- López isn’t good, really? Where do you come up with this stuff? It’s frightening.
MarlinsFanBase
Wow, @pinstripes17 lost all credibility 3 words into his comment.
CaptainJudge99
@DodgerNation- Y’all Dodger fans must have a lot of fun living out there in La La Land. Last time I checked the Marlins had pitching, and no hitting. The Yankees definitely have prospects that can hit, so López could definitely be attainable. That doesn’t sound made up at all. I just wouldn’t give up Torres and Peraza for López, that’s all y’all.
Salvi
“Florida Notes” Then it goes on to talk about the Yankees for 2 paragraphs.
Doug S
It was part of a Marlins trade, uh duh!
TheREALMetsFan22
I don’t mean to be like this.but in my opinion the marlins will maybe have 2 season in the next 25 that they are better than the Mets.
pinstripes17
Nobody cares about the Lolmets
theruns
Owner with the biggest d*ck in the room, a legit 100+ win team, and a top 10 farm system.
You might want to start caring.

And the Marlins may still win more championships in that time.

The Marlins next championship will be in 127 years, when they are playing games on the moon in space suits.
MarlinsFanBase
Funny thing, in 1998 after the Marlins traded Piazza to the Mets, Mets fans guaranteed that the Mets would win their next championship before the Marlins ever got another one.
Ahem….that statement didn’t age well. I’ll remember this one now.
thecoffinnail
I highly doubt that. If you haven’t been paying attention to the Marlins the last 30 years or so, they have always been a team to give a bright young executive a shot (who is in the GM chair now?) and seems to have a knack for developing top MLB superstars. The Mets well they are MLB’s laughable losers to the Cubs loveable losers. Their top prospects usually becoming middle of the road players at best. Good thing they still had DeGrom when that super rotation of Noah, Wheeler and “The Dark Knight” took turns on the IL. I remember when the Yankees had the owner with the biggest d**k in the room. They won exactly 1 championship since moneyball and analytics began. That is exactly what is going to happen when you add the top 2 free agents to a team that already makes the playoffs. Except for the Dodgers that is. $300m payrolls and they can only win when half of MLB players chose to have a year off.
Sideline Redwine
If the Rays can get J.P. back…that’d be huge! I thought he was done for the year. Need help in the pen, those guys are gonna run outta gas.
Mickey777
Did the Yankees realize what a good prospect Oswaldo Cabrera was? I wonder. I’ve read a few places lately, that Volpe is more of a second baseman than a SS. If that is accurate I guess they need Peraza to play short. With Volpe, Peraza, Cabrera, LeMahieu, Torres, Donaldson, and IKF it appears the Yankees have a plethora of infield candidates going forward seems like at least one of them would be traded before the start of the season. Donaldson would be the hardest to trade you a lot. Torres this year has reestablished his trade value some what, perhaps he’s the one to go?
thecoffinnail
When people say plethora it’s doesn’t make them look smart. It shows they prefer to waste everyone’s time using 3 syllable words when 1 or 2 (a lot, lots, plenty, many, ton(s) are just a few) would work just fine.
machurucuto
Peraza is far better than Volpe. Period.
Poster formerly known as . . .
How do you reckon he’s far better?
thecoffinnail
I would assume the fact Volpe has lost 200 pts off his OPS going from High A to AA has something to do with it. Maybe the fact they had identical stats in AA with AA being the best judge of a prospects true talent. Maybe it’s because Volpe handles SS a little worse than Torres. Until Volpe can unlock that super stick he swung last year he won’t remain the Yankees top prospect for much longer. Peraza is a polished defender with a solid bat for SS at AAA. He isn’t the shiny new kid but then again Torres was the best prospect in baseball.

Montas BMI = 32.7
Anything over 25 increases chances of injury with no increase in performance. Too many baseball players are “overweight” by BMI standards and that’s one of the biggest reasons there are so many injuries. It’s been studied and shown, but baseball stays in the dark ages.

Are we doing this again
mlb1225
“Baseball stays in the dark ages” yet you’re using the least accurate weight-to-height ratio. Ichiro Suzuki has a 24.5 BMI, which borders normal weight and overweight. Juan Soto is ‘obese’ yet hasn’t had a long injury list stint. Byron Buxton has the same BMI as Ichiro, yet has played more than 100 games once in his career. Baseball players and most athletes for that matter are naturally overweight or obese per BMI because muscle natrually weighs more than fat.

Pete Alonso BMI = 30.6
Julio Rodriguez BMI = 28.5
Paul Goldschmidt BMI = 27.5
No increase in performance, you say.
Where did you come across this theory?
CaptainJudge99
@machurucuto- That comment is definitely false. Volpe will likely be better then Peraza. Peraza will likely be a better shortstop defensively then Volpe. As @Mickey777- said Volpe will likely move to 2nd base, with Peraza playing shortstop. Smh
machurucuto
Volpe will be just another name in the long list of Yankees super prospects who didn’t blossom as expected… Estevan Florial, Deivi Garcia, Greg Bird, Justus Sheffield, Jesus Montero, Joba Chamberlain, Chance Adams….
CaptainJudge99
@machurucuto- hey you definitely could be right. I hope your wrong, and nobody likes the list guy. You got way too much time on your hands.

Care to list the other ML teams list of “super prospects” who didn’t make it?….yeh, thought so!

The overall availability of Lopez and the ask will depend a great deal on how the rest of the pitching staff looks going into next year. Here’s what we are currently keeping an eye on.
Obviously Alcantara is an Ace. Just needs to keep getting better and stay healthy.
Edward Cabrera has been looking good and dominant as he’s improved. He needs to continue to progress and stay healthy.
Jesus Luzardo has progressed a lot since the Marlins acquired him. He needs to continue with the progress, stay consistent, and stay healthy.
Trevor Rogers needs to get past the “sophomore slump” and get back to being consistent and progressing.
Braxton Garrett hopefully comes back healthy and isn’t out long. Needs to continue his progress as he’s improved a lot this year.
Sixto Sanchez = who knows when he’ll be healthy again.
Max Meyer is out next year.
Our other pitching prospects in MiLB will come up sometime next year, but will not start the season on the big club unless they look beyond ready.
If the Marlins can have a 5-man rotation on Opening Day without Lopez, then Lopez gets moved much easier in the offseason for a bat.

And don’t forget the bullpen!

Someone needs to tell Kim Ng. Everyone else on the planet know that the Marlins need a Closer. The Marlins front office led by Ng seems to be the only people on the planet to not realize that Marlins need one. Even Jeter thought Castellanos would cure that problem with blowing nearly every size lead on the last couple of innings.
Kim Ng, this offseason, no excuses. The Marlins need a Closer! You’re the only one that seems to not know this yet…for the last two years.

Big White Sox fan, I now live in Phoenix, Dodgers are on all the time. Dodgers are so much better than everyone else it’s almost not fair, highest payroll, best farm system, ridiculous
