4:57pm: Talks are not expected to result in a deal, Feinsand tweets. Lopez will remain a Marlin.
4:36pm: The Yankees are in talks with the Marlins on Lopez, reports Jon Heyman of the New York Post. The Dodgers, however, have dropped out of the bidding, per Feinsand.
Aug. 2, 4:12pm: The Dodgers “might” be making a late push to land Lopez, tweets Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, who adds that the asking price on the Miami right-hander remains quite high.
Aug. 1: Reports from earlier this week suggested the Marlins were “no longer dismissing calls” (in the words of Barry Jackson and Craig Mish of the Miami Herald) about Pablo Lopez’s availability, and thus it isn’t surprising that the aggressive Dodgers have reached out. Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports that Lopez is among the many players the Dodgers have discussed as tomorrow’s trade deadline looms.
The Twins and Cardinals have also been linked to Lopez in trade rumors, and given Lopez’s value as both an immediate rotation boost and a longer-term answer, it’s probably safe to guess that just about every contender has checked in with Miami general manager Kim Ng. Of course, since Lopez is controlled via arbitration through the 2024 season, he has a ton of value to the Marlins as well, particularly since Miami has enough talent on the roster that they’re surely aiming for a return to contention in 2023.
That means that if the Marlins did move Lopez, it would very likely be for players who are ready to contribute in the big leagues right away, as opposed to just intriguing prospects. Since the asking price for Lopez is sure to be huge, not many teams could necessarily meet the Marlins’ demands….but the Dodgers could certainly be one of those clubs, given their deep farm system.
It was a little over five years ago that Lopez was dealt as part of a four-player package from the Mariners to the Marlins in exchange for David Phelps, a deal that ended up being a significant win for Miami. After posting decent numbers over 31 starts in 2018-19, Lopez has quietly been one of the more effective starters in baseball, posting a 3.33 ERA, 48.1% grounder rate, 25.7% strikeout rate, and 6.9% walk rate over 278 2/3 innings since the start of the 2020 season.
A rotator cuff strain sidelined Lopez for most of the second half of the 2021 season, but he has rebounded with another strong performance this year. An above-average strikeout pitcher, Lopez has posted the best whiff rate of his career, while also getting a lot of grounders and soft contact (even if his low barrel-rate numbers suggest that batters can really capitalize on the relatively few occasions they do connect).
Clayton Kershaw is only signed through the 2022 season, as the long-time Dodgers ace seems to be taking a season-by-season approach to the remainder of his career. Beyond Kershaw, Tyler Anderson and Andrew Heaney are scheduled for free agency this winter, so trading for Lopez would give Los Angeles another controllable arm to go along with Julio Urias (arb-controlled through 2023), Dustin May (2025), and Tony Gonsolin (2026).
Bk11235 2
If they are trading for soto they have 0 chance for getting lopez. Definitely don’t have enough capital
Manfred’s playing with the balls
You haven’t seen the Dodgers farm then. They have tons of prospects. They’re stacked with guys ready to break into the top 100 and 6 guys already in the top 100.
Bk11235 2
Never the less soto gonna cost their top 4 prospects and lux. Who can they send the marlins that’s ready to contribute now?
Bryzzo2016
The Dodgers farm system is STACKED! They could easily get Soto AND Lopez without including any substantial ML talent.
Bk11235 2
Gavin lux gonna go in the nats trade along with all the prospects. Lopez gonna be very expensive as well
Manfred’s playing with the balls
If they sent Pepiot, Miller, Cartaya, Miguel Vargas and Lux to Washington
They could send Miami Dustin May, Andy Pages, Maddux Bruns and Michael Busch.
And both of those packages would be huge overpays that no team would probably top.
Then LA would still have guys like Gavin Stone, Ramos, Outman, Amaya, Landon Knack, And lotto tickets like Leonard, Vivas, Nastrini
Plus they’re stacked in catchers.
LA has the best development system in MiLB. It’s a prospect factory
Fire Krall

The Dodgers will not trade for Soto.

I’ve earned $17,370 merely 21 days simply working small tasks from a laptop.Immediately once cdx I lost my last career, I was so perturbed but finally I’ve found this best project and with this I’m able to achieve thousands simply from home. s12 Anyone certainly can avail this job & may earn more greenbacks on-line heading following page…….. http://worktop24.pages.dev

Friedman makes a last minute call to his buddy, Zaidi, and gets Rodon.
dodgerfan83
Just for reference, outman is our 17th prospect. We definitely have the depth
formerlyz
You overestimate the Marlins ability to get any value in any trades
Captain Judge99
Dodgers are out now. Yankees are in now. Stay tuned.
dodgersfan445
In Friedman we trust
Neon Cop
Wouldn’t be surprised if Cooper is a part of this also…
Cubensis of Saturn
I doubt it. His bat is good but LA doesn’t have the space for him unless they move Lux and cut Muncy
nando390
So does this mean they might be out on soto?

Hopefully…

why are dodgers even allowed to get anyone they’re so loaded they don’t “need” to buy any more players baseball is such a joke

Poor baby

Yeah baseball is a joke even though it has more parity than all the sports with a salary cap.

“They’re gonna choke like always” trashtalk and “they don’t need any help” crying always comes from the same ppl. You contradict yourselves

Every team drafts. Every team has a development system. The Dodgers always have prospects because they do these things well.
Every team has the opportunity to draft and develop well. If they don’t, that’s on them.
Mjm117
Cartaya, Vargas, and Outman for Pablo should get it done.
nando390
Lmao. Don’t ever apply to be GM
Nevrfolow
it really wansnt that bad that it warranted a response like that. could probably drop vargas and call it a deal.. relax…
bum4ever
Cartaya alone is more valuable than Lopez according to baseballtradevalues.
myaccount2
Given his control, I’d think they would be seeking a third prospect with a bit higher of a ceiling than Outman. I’d counter with Cartaya, Pages (they need an OF), and Vargas if it’s just a 3-player package. They have no reason to settle.
Cubensis of Saturn
That’s too much in my opinion. LA would be better off saving the kids for another deal and running Dustin May out there. He has 2 more rehab starts scheduled before they call him up.
Two top 100 prospects and 2 fliers from the lower levels would still probably be the best deal miami could get. Especially including Cartaya, the kid is mashing homers looks like the real deal behind the plate. I wish the angels would take some of the dodgers catchers of their hands

For Pablo Picasso, maybe…..
Otherwise…..uh, no.
BlueSkies_LA
Yeah, but can Picasso still pitch?
thickiedon
This is who the Cardinals should’ve targeted
Talleywhacker
Yup, but instead Mo will end up with a Rich Hill or Eovaldi or worse, empty handed
Manfred’s playing with the balls
I wonder what the asking price is on Pablo?
LA could just May and probably get similar if not better results. He looked like an ace the other day in AAA rehab start. Struck 6 of 12 batters and hit 99 MPH on the gun
StreakingBlue
It’s too much to rely on someone just off of Tommy John surgery.
Manfred’s playing with the balls
Relying on Pablo isn’t much better IMO. Kersh, Gonsolin, Urias, and Anderson all look like better pitchers. Heaney, White and May would be depth in the playoffs and insurance against Walker Buehler not coming back. The argument for Pablo is basically against using Heaney, White, May and Buehler at the back of the rotation. Most teams probably roll the dice with those 4 or Pepiot to fill the 5th spot.
BlueSkies_LA
Heaney is a glorified long man now. He’ll be fortunate to finish five in any of this starts even assuming he doesn’t get hurt again.
Manfred’s playing with the balls
All 5th starters are glorified long men. The guy has the best stats of any long man I can recall.
When you have May, Heaney, Buehler, White and Pepiot, that gives you the option of piggy backing these guys and insurance in case a couple go down with another injury.
You’re missing the point
sportznut1000
So i decided to pull up the old article from when the marlins traded phelps to the mariners. Here was the info mlbtraderumors shared about pablo lopez. Brayan hernandez was the headliner by the way
Lopez is a 21-year-old starter that has spent the year in Class-A Advanced. While his 5.02 ERA through 100 innings doesn’t look appealing, he’s posted an excellent 89-to-13 K/BB ratio with a 49 percent ground-ball rate, creating some optimism that he’s been hit with some poor luck. (A .341 BABIP lends further credence to that notion.) MLB.com placed him 22nd in Seattle’s system and gave him three average offerings (fastball, curveball, changeup) but no plus pitch. He was 31st on BA’s offseason rankings, and their report notes that he has a 2014 Tommy John surgery in his history but is a “supreme strike-thrower” with impressive ground-ball tendencies.
formerlyz
I’ve always compared him to Anibal Sanchez. His changeup has become one of the best in the National League, and he added a couple of mohs on his fastball as well
JerseyShoreScore
Pablo Lopez makes sense for several teams, but not the Dodgers.
Lopez has had injury issues and seems to be fading a bit in July.
Not sure he even has the stamina to be of any help in October.
If all their pitchers are healthy in October, Lopez is likely in the bullpen or off the playoff roster. He does not start a playoff game over Urias, Kershaw, Buehler, Mary, or Gonsolin. Even Heaney and Anderson have pitched better than Lopez on a per start basis. So, the prospect capital that you would have to invest to get Lopez seems like a bad utilization of finite resources for Friedman.
Cubensis of Saturn
I feel the same way. It seems like overkill with all the pitching that the Dodgers have.
Mystery13
Jays should trade Espinal, Jansen, groshans and more for Looez, Wendel and Bass
charlesk
Aren’t you forgetting Walker Buehler?
Kewldood69
The Dodgers system is 1990’s Pamala Anderson.
FarhanFan22
Add Phoebe Cates from fast times plus Scarface era Michelle Pfeiffer and you’re getting close.
SocoComfort
Boob Jobs are performance enhancers lol.
EvelKnievelVsGodzilla
If this happens, Marlins better get a good bat, and not Bellinger.
stretch123
They would want one of Lux, Pages or Busch
holecamels35
Why trade a bunch of prospects when you can get similar production from guys like Tyler Anderson and Tony Gonsolin? Not to mention whoever else they call upon like May. Dodgers player development is out of this world amazing.
sox4ever
Bet they land Lopez and Tanner Scott
Don’s Ghost
Pablo Lopez doesn’t move the needle. Has never played in high stakes, never been under the real bright lights, and just got SHELLACKED by a WS contender and road block for the Dodgers.
Marlins would be lucky to get a top 10 for him. Pep for Pablo or keep your Fish.
alanofla
This is at least the second article on this site which fails to mention WALKER BUEHLER. See, MLBTR, I put his name in caps so he becomes less forgettable to you guys. Just because Buehler’s on the IL does not mean he isn’t a part of the team.
BlueSkies_LA
You know, it’s a time zone thing.
Shrutefarm
Urias, Kershaw, **Buehler, Anderson, Heaney, Gonsolin, May. They are all expected to be available to start playoff games for LA.
Lopez would be nice to have to help eat innings and limit fatigue to the rest of the staff. But, I don’t know if the Dodgers should give up more than 1 top 10 and 1 top 30 prospect to get him. They are fine without him.
**if recovered from current injury.
BlueSkies_LA
Agreed. It’s difficult to see the reason for the interest in Lopez. He isn’t obviously better than anyone the Dodgers have already, and he’s an unlikely postseason starter. He’s worth one high-level prospect and somebody else from a lower shelf, at most. But I still don’t know why they would want to pull that trigger.
BeforeMcCourt
If they spend significantly for Lopez, imo, it means their current injured pitchers are unlikely to be big weapons for the team in Oct, in the team’s eyes, at the moment
formerlyz
If the Marlins are trading Lopez right now, which they shouldnt be, it better be for a lot, but I have significantly less than zero faith in them to get any value in any trade
Jack Buckley
The Dodgers are like an all star team with a 295 million dollar payroll, they’ll get Soto
PadreB2011
This comment aged WELL! Let’s Go Padres!!!
DodgerDan
Lopez and Cooper! Let gt it.
Alkie
Pablo Lopez, career away from MIA: 4.77 ERA
Career against winning teams: 4.67 ERA
Good luck, Dodgers. Please make this trade.
Alkie
LOLyanks, even better.
sportznut1000
The bottom of the article listed all the dodgers starters years left on their contracts and they left off walker buehrle. He is on the IL, he will be back
Source: i am a giants fan. I know
stretch123
Lopez and Cooper for Michael Busch, Andy Pages, Landon Knack and James Outman.
Don’t think LA would want to include Lux.
Pedro 4 Delino
Oh please no. The dodgers need to promote some kids next year and let some under performers walk. Busch and Outman are 2 I think are MLB ready and Pages and Knack aren’t far behind.
Moneyballer
This is the guy I wanted Minnesota to land.
Chemo850
I really don’t understand this from the Dodgers perspective. Even as a Marlins fan, I wouldn’t trade Dustin May straight up for Lopez if I’m the Dodgers. Lopez just wouldnt move the needle much for them. I think folks are also missing the fact that Lopez will be on an innings limit. He’s already quickly approaching a career high in innings, so this is unknown territory for him and I doubt either team will allow to to go much further than his previous high.
Cap & Crunch
Stand pat LAD !!!
Whew 35 mins left, no news is good news for me !
For those who follow Lad’s minor league system you know they have had a great year on the farm. Lotta good developments and players clearing their bars and moving up the rung
We don’t need this deal unless it falls off a truck
Old York
I don’t think this is the guy the Yankees should pursue unless Miami is asking for very little, which I doubt. Yankees should have been on Soto, given the little the Padres gave up.
Wowwwwww
Unrelated if jed Hoyer can’t trade contrearas and Happ then he should be fire immediately
MarlinsFanBase
Pablo Lopez stays. Good.
formerlyz
Very happy they didnt move Lopez, but even more annoyed and frustrated that the only move they made was the Pop/Bass deal…how are there not 3 or 4 more bullpen guys off this roster? How is Jesus Aguilar still here? How is Jacob Stallins still here? How is Joey Wendle still here? Clown show
