Aug. 19: The Dodgers have released Wolters, per the transactions log at MLB.com.
Aug. 15: The Dodgers announced Monday that catcher Austin Barnes has been reinstated from the family medical emergency list. Fellow backstop Tony Wolters was designated for assignment in order to open a spot on the roster for Barnes’ return.
Wolters, 30, was added to the roster as the corresponding move when Barnes initially stepped away from the team for family reasons thus past Friday. He appeared in a pair of games over the weekend but went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in his very brief time as a member of the Dodgers. He’ll now be placed on outright waivers or released in the next week.
A familiar face for the Dodgers and their fans thanks to a lengthy stint as the primary catcher for the Rockies, Wolters has appeared in just 16 big league games since leaving Colorado following the 2020 season (14 with the Cubs last year, plus these two with L.A.). He caught 391 games with the Rox from 2016-20, hitting .238/.323/.319 with strong defensive marks for most of his time calling Coors Field home.
Wolters was batting .216/.311/.270 in 193 plate appearances with the Dodgers’ Triple-A affiliate at the time of his selection to the big league roster. In all, he’s a .235/.321/.314 hitter in parts of seven Major League seasons (1266 plate appearances).
Well that was short lived
As expected. He was just covering for Barnes.
Los Karens making moves.
Weird comment. Wouldn’t the Padres be more “Karenesque”? The Pads complain a lot. The dodgers rarely complain, they just act like they’ve won more WS then they actually have.
And he will be picked up again after he clears waivers. As for you.. you are a fool
Good field, no hit. He did decent work with Rockies.
He didn’t actually. The Rockies (and most specifically their regular TV announcing team) just thought he did. Why he was on their roster for 3 years or whatever it was, was one of the strangest things that strange franchise ever did. Dude went entire years without a single home run while playing half his games at Coors Field, and his defense is vastly overrated (good framing sometimes, decent throwing, terrible blocking and pitch calling).
Those of us that show sophistication and respect for the game still call them the Trolley Dodgers.
Why not Robins, Superbas, Grooms, Bridegrooms, Grays or Atlantics?
Because a lot of people would think that goes overboard. Personallly, I’m for it but not everyone is like us.
As nicknames go, it’s hard to beat the “Athletic Club.”
Such creativity and vision.
Both Austin Barnes and Tony Wolters can also play 2B. They’re not Craig Biggio but it’s noteworthy.
I wonder how many people forget or don’t know that Biggio was the Astros starting Catcher for his first 3+ seasons in the league (even won a Silver Slugger as a Catcher in 1989). Same for Todd Zeile. We generally just associate them at the positions we are most familiar watching them play (Biggio 2B, Zeile 3B)
I remember when Brian Downing was the White Sox catcher, Cliff Johnson was the Astros catcher and when Dale Murphy was the Braves catcher. The Brewers had BJ Surhoff; the Tigers had Brandon Inge; Cleveland had Carlos Santana. Gene Tenace and Earl Williams played 1B on rest days. I know I’m missing some.
@RSox – Blake Swihart used to be a catcher too, before his ‘successful’ transfer to the OF. Let’s not forget that!
Still waiting on that “successful transfer”…
wolters Dodger legacy will be catching a flaccid game that ended a 12 game win streak and going 0 for 3 w 3 k’s.
What’s the MLB minimum wage now? Even a 4 game prorated salary is a nice little check for a few hours work.
And he’s been a professional about meaning he’ll get another MiLB chance for sure if he wants it and, likely, a handful of MLB games at some point.
Or he can retire knowing he’s done something the rest of used to fantasize about
I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him back at Oklahoma City early next week.
Your fired.
“You’re” grammar is fired
His grandpa is looking for work, too.
I doubt that.
Thanks!
