The Dodgers have claimed infielder Rylan Bannon off waivers from the Orioles, per announcements from both clubs. It had not been publicly reported that Bannon had been designated for assignment, but the O’s evidently tried to pass him through waivers with the Dodgers intercepting them. Los Angeles had a vacancy on its 40-man roster, meaning no corresponding move will be required.
Bannon, 26, will now return to the organization where he began his professional career, as he was drafted by the Dodgers in 2017. He was one of the five players that went to the Orioles in the 2018 deadline deal that sent Manny Machado to Los Angeles.
In 2019, his first full season with the O’s, he split his time between Double-A and Triple-A, hitting a combined .266/.345/.421 for a wRC+ of 120. He also added some versatility to his defensive game, with the primary third baseman also seeing some time at second base. Based on that strong season, he was added to Baltimore’s 40-man roster prior to the 2020 Rule 5 draft.
After the minor leagues were canceled in 2020, Bannon had a tepid showing in 2021, slashing .176/.297/.370 in 84 Triple-A games. He’s had a better showing here in 2022, though, hitting .229/.347/.407 for a wRC+ of 105 in 78 Triple-A games. He also made his MLB debut, though he got just 15 plate appearances over a four-game stretch in May.
The Dodgers recently placed Justin Turner on the injured list due to an abdominal strain. That leaves Max Muncy as the primary option at the hot corner, though he’s been battling elbow issues all season. By claiming Bannon, they’ve given themselves a little extra depth at third, bringing in a versatile player that they have a previous relationship with.
back to the Dodgers, Machado deal a busy
bust
Yeah the 2 WAR that we gave up for 2 months of Manny was so irreplaceable… Kremer alone will outperform that by next year at this rate.
Total bust..
Back to where it all began
He passed through the other 29 teams? That’s funny.
So did Evan Phillips.
He was Rancho’s best hitter before he was traded in 2018, a team that had Gavin Lux and Connor Wong
I remember seeing him play against the Inland Empire 66ers. I thought the same thing. Was shocked when they traded him.
He needs to find his new Epicenter in the Bigs
At least we got Dean Kremer!
Love the Jahmai Jones ink as well
When Bannon was claimed off of waivers from the Orioles, does he have to be put on 40 man roster?
Yes
Yes, he needed to be added to the 40-man since he was claimed on waivers as he was on Baltimore’s 40 man roster before being DFA’d. Had he cleared waivers, he could have been signed to a minors deal with no 40-man requirements but given his service time, he’d be Rule V eligible this winter had that happened.
He was optioned to OKC but is on the 40 man
Even though not a single prospect in the Machado trade panned out, I still wouldn’t have done it. 2018 was supposed to be a weird year for the Dodgers and then Matt Kemp & some guy named Max Muncy decided to play like All-Stars.
Kremer is still looking okay.
A stopgap until Rios comes back, though when that happens is still a bit of a mystery.
The rare lose-lose trade
how did LA lose the trade? They got an NL pennant out of Machado and lost to a 108-win team in the World Series. They also gave up none one who would ever start for them.
Dodgers had to deal with Machado’s unprofessional attitude that wasn’t a great fit for the team. Not a bad loss for the team, but wasn’t a good fit.
He gave the Dodgers +2.5 bWAR and 13 home runs in only 66 games. Machado may not have led them to a World Series ring, but helped them secure the NL Pennant even after losing their two-time All-Star shortstop. Teams who make big trades and don’t win the World Series because of those trades doesn’t mean they lost the trade.
Agreed. They got to the World Series. You always want to position your team for a chance to win it all, as the playoffs is a crapshoot. Dodgers came off an emotional 7-game NLCS series win against the Brewers, while the Red Sox easily beat the Astros. I’m sure that was a factor but Sox looked like the better team.
Unlike the previous year, the Sox were actually the better team. It’s hard to forget seeing Machado strike out to end the series, though. Unfortunately I was there.
Dodgers we’re just not mashers like the Red Sox we’re that series. Red Sox we’re just destined to win that series as Dodgers lost the first two games in Boston after they couldn’t really hit.
Gotta love seeing the Mighty Dodgers claiming Orioles leavings, even if they had him previously.
Where is the eye-roll emoji when you really need it?
‘Orioles leavings’. Have you seen the Orioles farm system?
A winning MAJOR league team no less.
Evan Phillips, the best non-closer RP in baseball was DFA’s by the Orioles last year
The Dodgers can claim having this “best non-closing RP” thing until Blake Treinen…. Oh wait, nevermind!
They can claim getting a good reliever for nothing right? You have to agree there correct?
This whole ‘Machado trade is a bust’ thing is laughable. OMG, we lost Rylan Bannon, lol.
